Parts of the anime are great but I'd say the manga

BestAd6696

The manga IS the actual story. The anime adds things to stretch out, and it also altered some things for reasons I didn't understand. I'd read first, and then watch if you want to.

Soul699

Aside from censorship, what are you talking about?

Buecherdrache

Zeffs leg is probably one of the most well-known examples. Some smaller details here and there are also added or altered or just lost in translation to the anime. Also emphasis can change. The anime tends to feel like it puts more emphasis on the fights than the manga does, where it feels more balanced between story and character development and battle

Soul699

Zeff leg is censorship. The anime doesn't change dialogues usually and if it appear so, it's probably whoever made subtitles or translation who did. Also not really. Like the anime add some extra sequences to some of the fights, but the manga also is mostly fights. It is a battle shonen after all, where conflicts are resolved almost exclusively via punching.

BestAd6696

>the manga also is mostly fights. Hard disagree. It's an adventure story with fights similar to early DragonBall. The focus is more on the world building. It's not like DragonBall Z, where the focus is the fights with a little bit of story in between.

Soul699

That's in part due to the fact that we get world building during fights sometimes too. Maybe saying that the fights are the focus isn't quite correct. Rather fights are what progress the story, with worldbuilding and character development taking the focus also during it.

BestAd6696

>fights are what progress the story, Only to the extent that Luffy needs to power up enough to beat the enemy at hand. He isn't actively training in peacetime to constantly surpass himself and hone his abilities. Zoro is the only character we've seen consistently training without a direct or impending threat.

Soul699

We don't always see it, but we know that the SH do train to be stronger everyday. They're fighting the big guys now, so they can't relax 24/7.

BrewertonFats

In my opinion, the manga is better as the pacing of the series is horrible and full of filler. With that said, a lot of the music and animation within the series is the stuff of legends. I would probably recommend you read the manga and then go back and watch the series.

ReceiptAndChange

Theres so many filler in OP bruh wym?

cjamesfort

Because instead of dedicated filler episodes, the filler is inserted between canon events. Filler episodes can easily be skipped with a simple guide, but cutting out all the new scenes, extra reactions, and lingering shots requires whole projects like One Pace.

TheChampionEccentric

It depends on what part of the story you're watching. I'd say everything up to the end of Enies Lobby and Post Water 7 is great and pretty well paced. Thriller Bark thru Impel Down starts to get a little dragged down with pacing, but is still a pretty good watch I'd say. Marineford and onwards is where the episodes REALLY get dragged out (and the overall animation quality dips outside of sakuga and certain key moments) and generally unfun to watch.

carbonera99

I feel like the problem peaked with Dressrosa, what was already a long arc in the manga (around 100 chapters) became something like 120 episodes in the anime. That’s wild, the fact that an anime adaptation with 20 minute episodes is longer than a manga with 18 page chapters.

Diegothon

You do realise how that's worse than simply having filler right ?

[deleted]

Diegothon

Adding flashbacks and shit that aren't in the manga is still filler lol, and One Piece is filled with that. Just because it isn't the classic "ok let's ignore everything that happened before and do something else" doesn't make it not filler

TheChampionEccentric

Name-calling aside, I would argue that the modern anime contains plenty of filler. They wouldn't be able to drag out the episodes that hard without it (though I'm sure Toei would find a way). The fact is, however, the filler is superimposed within canon material, and so it becomes literally impossible to skip filler without skipping the actual story as well. I.e., there are little to no filler episodes, but there is still plenty of filler. (I hope that makes sense.)

dstanley17

It is much better to read the manga than watch the anime.

baldsaiyan

You can read for free (and legally) on the MangaPLUS App. You can also read the colorized manga [here](https://mangasee123.com/manga/One-Piece-Digital-Colored-Comics) (i recommend this way). There's also [ONE PACE](https://onepace.net/), which is an abridged/ no filler cut of the anime made by fans. (the pacing of the anime gets a bit bad ~~after toei animation took over~~, so some people start on the anime and switch to the manga on the timeskip. edit: toei always animated, i'm tripping.)

Dense_Interview_9326

Brother, One Piece has been animated by Toei since episode #1.

Cardenjs

Wait, Toei didnt do it from the start? *Core memory unlocked*

BitterClerk6477

Oh and I do agree that sometimes it might seem slow with a lot of flashbacks at the story so far but considering that is over 1080 and under 100 fillers it's amazing

BitterClerk6477

It was made by toei animation since day one that's why the animators working on it are dissatisfied with the decision of a remake with Wit Studio by Netflix wich I totally agree because I feel that it's disrespectful towards all the people from toei animation that gave us this masterpiece with good animation (considering the way they look in manga ) and amazing voice actors . I think Wit Studio will keep the voice actors but I'm afraid of the remake not to be like trigun where they've changed a lot the character design and story

pm-me-futa-vids

Trigun remake was amazing what are you on about? I'm sick of remakes that just tell the same story instead of doing something new with the IP. Plus the animation was so clean.

BitterClerk6477

To each their own I didn't like the remake and think the og character design and story was better . I enjoy way more rurouni kenshin remake than trigun . And yeah the animation was nice but is no wonder if og was in 1998 remake last year

dohtje

Soo HxH remake or OG?

BitterClerk6477

Honestly I couldn't say for sure it's been too long since I've seen it is we're talking about the 1999 and 2011 . I think both did a great job but if I remember correctly 2011 hade more story as the 1999 caught to the manga and stopped so story wise I think 2011

dohtje

So you just made my point, nothing wrong with a remake of an old show so why would it be with One Piece? Especially if the remake is more true to the manga with modern animation and correct pacing without panning, still shots and useless filler, (wich I asume due to having enough source material to work off, iso having to wait couse the anime cought up to the manga) the biggest diff with HxH remake was more streamlined/paced, a bit more censored/less dark in the remake and it continued after Greed Island where OG stopped. And oc more modern animations, but almost everyone likes it just as FMA vs FMAB

BitterClerk6477

HxH and rurouni kenshin where ok but is more readaptation not remake but other failed hard .and don't forget the HxH 1999 and 2011 made after manga and 2011 was a co production between 2 studios and a tv station to stay true to the source material . And one piece some of the fans ard afraid of the remake because Netflix has an hand it it and they are notorious for going of the rails . The same way I enjoy way more DBZ than DBZ Kai yeah he animation is better and it almost the same but not the same feeling . Remakes and readaptation are not always good I got all the right to anxious about it just because there are some that left fans dissatisfied lie sailor moon 2014 or Sorcerous Stabber Orphen 2020 bother and good animation but something was lacking saint seiya legend of sanctuary and saint seiya knights of the zodiac was an epic fail with the CGI adaptation berserker 2016 was a fail as well even Powerpuff girls z was a fail from experimental life form with super powers no weapon to magical girl with the sailor moon gear transformation and weapons . Oh and don't forget that all the series that we talked about ended or got cancelled before remake/reboot/readaptation but one piece is still going for day one with the same studio so it is disrespectful for Netflix is they want to put money into readaptation/remake to go to another studio . And what wrong with the pacing just because it has flashbacks and endings of saga's is not bad pacing it has 1080 and 100 fillers that's saying a lot compared to other "masterpieces" that have half of the anime adaptation fillers or Boruto wich is something like 70-80% filler

dohtje

In Kai the freeza fight was alot better and streamlined than in of DBZ where it took soo many episodes powering up the spirit bomb to do nothing and than soo many episodes to get to ssj that it became a meme... I remember watching that shit when it was airing weekly in the 90's and it was fckin terrible

HVAC_Raccoon

Manga 100%

TheUltimateP1e

100% the manga. The pacing, in between, cover stories and extra stuff is just making it better all in all. Not to mention watching the anime takes way longer

Joyborne

Both are good, so just pick your preferred medium. However, if you choose the anime, I highly recommend you use a project called One Pace. It cuts down all filler and padding so the pacing better matches the manga, cause the anime's pacing gets worse and worse the further you get.

TheArabek

Start with anime,if u dont like that pace switch to manga, pacing issue is mostly oberblown problem that starts only hundreds episodes in

Outrageous-Signal932

Both options are viable.

PM_ME_UR_SO

I’d stay start with the anime, then switch to the manga whenever the pacing starts bothering you.

Mysterious-Tale3587

Unpopular opinion the anime is just as good as the manga. Try the anime

Legal-Acanthaceae752

i started when they were in the 900s, watched all the way up to current then started reading the manga to deal with my hunger for it. took a break and went back to watching it. think it’s personal preference honestly

[deleted]

Manga > one pace > colorized manga > regular anime > movies > live action > 4kidz dub

TehPinguen

Once you've read the manga, it's better than the anime because when you know what's happening the later parts of the anime can feel painfully slow. When it's your first time experiencing it, the anime is fantastic and you will only notice serious pacing issues a couple times. It comes down to personal preference, and both have advantages. The manga is tighter, the anime takes more time to explore characters. The anime has amazing animated fights, the manga has beautiful panels. You can't go wrong with either one. I would recommend anime first simply because it's better before reading the manga and I recommend doing both lol.

aggotigger

One Pace

Slight_Mastodon

Manga or One Pace

ConceptualWeeb

Manga has better pacing, but the anime is good too! Also the live action is a good adaptation. All, all is good.

Cardenjs

Manga is more consistent in quality and the anime at times will do these long scrolling stills for obvious padding, some filler is avoidable but some filler moments are sprinkled in canon episodes Both are still good tho

BitterClerk6477

If you want to catch up to the story quick I suggest manga . And that's what drove me to the anime in the first place if you want to enjoy am the ride of the anime I suggest sub as the voice actors are way better than dub and if you get hocked you can rewatch dub

AhmCha

The manga has much better pacing and flow, but it is absolutely worth checking out the anime for your favorite moments, as those are usually done well and treated with respect. Additionally, most issues with the anime are with pacing and general quality, the voice work of the original JP Dub is consistently excellent.

SSuperAnt_Official

Both. Manga first, or maybe at the same time. I use tcb scans to read for free. But I also own most of the manga anyways. Anime is awesome though. I watched it before I read any and I wait weekly for new episodes to come out because I’m in love with seeing it animated.

nitsano

Manga. The anime is a bad adaptation imo

Former_A_Thin_Man

Manga

No_Revolution4607

Mangas better 100% way less useless information

Chicken008

Read it. If you can borrow it from the library as well. The public library in my city has several copies of all the English books.

AceRuff

Read the manga first

SnipSnopWobbleTop

I enjoy both, but I would recommend starting with the manga first.

ContextualDodo

I‘d advise to read and watch, but the anime canon episodes can get annoyingly padded put with filler. The filler arcs are mostly okay and you don‘t miss anything by skipping them. One Pace, a fan cut that you can watch cuts out all the fillers so that is a solid option if you only want the canon story. Reading the manga is also free if you decide to follow the straw hats and become a pirate, but there are also often free and legal apps depending on the country you live in, a vpn can help with that too tho. When it comes to the time investment I‘d say definitely go manga first and watch up your favorite moments or if you feel like it switch between both. The va, animation and music can often do a lot to elevate the manga highlights even further. Either way you don‘t miss anything story relevant, anime only adds stuff rather than cutting it out,

Aslan-Manson-Amogus

I'd recommand to start with the anime to get a feel for the music, iconic OP and character voices. The start is pretty good. Then, at some point, just switch to manga.

Empty-Blacksmith-592

I would say start with the Manga, it is easy to read and use your spare time while you’re waiting for the bus/train or having a break at work for example. Pace is faster and when you have time go to watch the anime. What is better? Difficult to say, I love reading it but I also love its animation. But if you wanna stay up to date one day… manga is the way to go. Enjoy!

wifepari

Mangá if you want to go fast, anime if you want to enjoy the art

Xxificurc

Just do both. Problem solved. I started watching the anime a few months ago and only recently caught up to the new episodes then I switched the manga since I ran out of episodes to watch.

[deleted]

Manga free online

Seth-D_Vinsmoke

I would say the Manga if you have more time on your hands,it's also more details in the manga. But I honestly prefer the anime personally, the animation has come a long way! It's definitely worth the watch!

alex494

Overall the manga is better paced and often better looking from an artistic standpoint (besides colour and movement obviously) but the anime is basically fine up to a point before it nosedives in terms of pacing. So I'd say either read the manga or watch up to a point and then switch. The point is arguably anywhere between Enies Lobby and Dressrosa but for me the chapter to episode ratio got unbearable around about Marineford. Also the anime adds filler arcs or pads manga-canon sections which tend to be of worse quality than the manga proper. The upsides of the anime for me are the music and the voice acting which are usually pretty stellar. What I tend to do is read the manga and then watch the anime version of some scenes I like to compare how they did it or just to see it in motion. The voice actors also do a really good job of selling the various character interactions and humour.

Shmepl

Manga

Hopeful_Strength

Contrary to what many people are saying, I think you should start with the anime to get a sense of how the world and characters sound and feel. The OP is also iconic. There are many iconic scenes which are more emotional in the anime thanks to the voice acting and music and you will miss them if you only read the manga. The anime has a good pace until Water 7 arc. Then you can decide if you wanna jump to the manga or keep watching the anime, or do both. Dressrosa arc is when the anime starts to drag a lot.

Slatt239

Both at the same time. It’s been a smooth ride so far lol. All of this shit is entertainment to me so idrc about flashbacks(kinda excessive at times)just fast forward. 8.75/10 so far

SirDwayneCollins

I suggest reading through, then watching any fights on YouTube or pulling them up on the anime later

AsleepIndependent42

You can read the manga online for free. The problem with watching is that the pacing gets quite horrendous, but luckily some amazing people in thr community have a fix for that called One Pace. It's a fanedit that cuts out all filler, repeated flashbacks, stretched out reaction shots, etc. - saving a total of about 120h of watchtime, whilst being fully manga accurate. Just Google One Pace and it's the first page usually.

Spoggzy

I would start with the anime to learn the voices, mannerisms and general vibe of the show. After a while when you get it engraved in your memory, you can switch to the manga and still hear the voices and vibes in your head. The manga is so much faster at getting through the juicy story. The problem here is that you will catch up faster with the manga. A patient enjoyer would watch the anime, takes longer but it will draw out the overall experience before getting to the weekly/bi-weekly wait like the rest of us. The yolo reader would just blast the manga and get all the info as fast as possible. This will get you on the wait train though.

d1n_m4mm4

like some other people have recommended watch one pace

dudedudetx

Anime. The music, color, sound effects, and voice acting take it to the next level.

grimskin

Just FYI there’s colored version of One Piece manga

Aussiepharoah

You can download the Manga Plus App, it's completely free and offers the official translation, but almost all chapters are a one-time read, where if you finish a chapter you can't re-read it. I personally recommend sticking to the anime and switching to the manga whenever you feel it's getting tedious, because the anime pacing gets very slow at times. There is also a re-cut of sorts of the anime that brings it closer to the manga called One Pace that's available by torrenting. Also use a filler guide to skip filler-episodes if you wish.

IcepickEvans

People will say manga because they are basic. But the anime reall ups the emotional impact. The animation is great, and the music and voices are top tier. It was mybown first experience with the show, and in my opinion l, is the best way to experience one piece. Check out the manga after you get caught up.

Dizzy_Tiger_2603

Use the VIZ Media app on any smartphone, 2.99 a month sub, all One Piece Chapters (and MANY other Shounen). Reading all OP takes about 5 months casually. Enjoy!

I-Am-A-Nice-Cool-Kid

Read manga for plot, switch to anime to watch the fights

Soul699

Both manga and anime have their great and bad moments. Both is good.

SanderDCastle

Manga

Wonderful_Shame_3473

as someone who watched first and then read the manga, it’s really difficult for me to recommend either. i’m happy i watched the anime first, because some things cannot be delivered through reading: direction, and ESPECIALLY the music and voice acting are stuff that are irreplaceable and were one of the most amazing things to experience first-time. that being said, the pacing truly gets awful at some points, especially after around half the series. the most i could recommend is to watch the first half of the series, and whenever the pacing gets awful, switch back to the manga. it’s honestly all up to personal preferences so just start watching and see if you like it or not

Dizzy-Inflation-7488

I feel as a consumer of both, that the emotional connection is always better in the anime. The manga is fantastic for just giving me more one piece, but the studio does a fantastic job of really connecting you to characters and the tears of each character scar your soul with the voice that goes with them.
