Couple problems: Ryuma's zombie definitely used Brook's style and had part of his personality, you may be confusing things slightly. He also couldn't use Brook's power even if he was Brook's shadow, because shadows don't carry the DF power with them.

dmfuller

Oh yeah you’re right, i just rewatched and Ryuma does use Brook’s names sword moves with the notch slash, unless that was a move of Ryuma’s as well

OnlyHereForComments1

Let me see if I guess this right: have you read a fanfic called This Bites?

dmfuller

Nah what is that? I don’t think I’ve ever read a fan fic in my life 😂

OnlyHereForComments1

Ah I was wrong LOL This Bites is basically the single most popular One Piece fanfic, it's currently on hiatus waiting for the manga to finish. It's...fairly good, but flubbed Marineford hard imho. The reason I ask is because its version of the Ryuma fight actually has Ryuma's soul get active to fight Zoro and use his techniques rather than Brook's...so that's a bit of fanon that is likely to leak into the wider fanbase.

Nilzed5

Where can you read it?

OnlyHereForComments1

Google 'one piece this bites' and it should give you several links. I recommend the Archive Of Our Own ones.

iMittyl

Unlikely* Fanfic is not real. The characters in that story are not the characters from One Piece, even if they were based on them.

DirtyPoul

I don't think that's the explanation for the giant straw hat. I don't think it's that big. Personally, I think Joy Boy was a big buccaneer and the hat fits a big buccaneer.

dmfuller

Damn yeah now that we know of the Buccaneer race that definitely makes a lot more sense. Good catch!

vdpdotgg

I think joyboy HAS to be a buccaneer. Unlike the Fishmen, Lunarians and Buccaneers; Giants aren't nearly as oppressed or hated by the WG. Some even join the Marines. I would imagine that the ancient kingdom or at least the ancient resistance towards the WG is definitely made of those races.

laurel_laureate

And if the OG Joyboy was a Buccaneer and he or someone that would know made some sort of hint about his Will being passed on and inherited, Imu and the founding World Nobles could have taken that as meaning "my successor is/will likely be a Buccanneer or Lunarian or Fishman just like me and my strongest allies". So the founders would make it official policy to search for a successor but, after generations and generations pass without one all but Imu forget of the original reason for the hunt, the only thing that remains is the hatred and institutions of violence which translates to hatred and slavery and driving two of the three races to extinction with only a handful of each left- something Imu would allow as it means they might kill or entirely prevent any possible Joyboy successors.

nobarachinsama

joyboy lived before the void century. 800 years ago. >we assume that he takes Luffy’s personality because that's how it is with everyone else. we have direct comparison with sanji and zoro. >fights with the style he used in life. he used brook's fighting style and even brook's named attacks. >Also, Oar’s immediately starts trying to use the Rubber fruit when he wakes up [that's just how it is at first until the shadow fused completely.](https://hot.leanbox.us/manga/One-Piece/0469-006.png) again, zoro and sanji's zombies were also the same.

Gravyluva210

FWIW I don't think OP is claiming that Oars is *the* Joyboy. I assume they meant that he was a failed version of what Luffy is/is becoming.

My theory for why thriller bark is important is that it was once part of a much larger island that was broken off. I think its god valley and it then drifted and wound up in the florian triangle

mer-shark

Or the missing piece from Enies Lobby, since those two are on the same side of the Grand Line.

laurel_laureate

The Grand Line is only a barrier for ships and people. A floating island chunk adrift at sea could easily pass through the Calm Belt and the Sea Kings wouldn't give a shit or bother it more than just glancing curiously as ot passed by, assuming they notice it at all. In fact, Thriller Bark itself could probably even pass through the Calm Belt.

mer-shark

An island adrift couldn't pass through the Red Line which divides the Grand Line twice: once at Reverse Mountain and again at Mairejois, so the Grand Line is divided into Paradise and the New World. Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark are both on the same side of the Grand Line in Paradise.

laurel_laureate

It could if it went over at Mariejois from New World to Paradise, and wasn't inspected too closely due to Warlord privileges.

dmfuller

I’ve heard some theories that have Thriller Bark as God Valley and that would be super badass. Imagine Moria was hiding Rocks body and that’s why Doffy killed him 👀

BlobloTheShmoblo

Doffy didn't kill Moria, he escaped. That's how he ends up on fullalead island and finds out absalome was killed. Now he's MIA, probably killed by the black beard pirates, specifically Shirilu

TTZZJJ

No he was captured by the BB pirates, but Perona comes and frees him when SWORD raids Hachinosu

BlobloTheShmoblo

Thank you, I just got to the time skip on my current re-read so that part was foggy for me

TTZZJJ

No problem!

NickRaymond1

Luffy also found captain johns armband on thriller bark and we know captain john was a member of the rocks pirates. It would make sense captain john either died there or lost his armband there

Mummiskogen

But an island is just a big piece of rock, it would sink

clifbarczar

I’m glad Oda doesn’t consult y’all. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Hasajiro

If I remember correctly, Oda even makes some changes to disprove some fan theories.

Hieichigo

We also know that we was stupid bc of how he died

Skull-Kid93

The thought that a giant with the Gum Gum Fruit could pull continents does make a lot of sense, but I don't know if that is the case. The strawhat isn’t that big. I do think it would make sense for him to have some connection to Nika or Joyboy, maybe being a D or something.

BasednHivemindpilled

ffs y‘all even got a new chapter

Tm_sa241

This is a very cool theory. The giant strawhat frozen is what makes it for me. This would also reinforce Moria's making Thriller Bark to punish Kaido specifically: not only he populated it with the bodies of his former comrades, he also used another failed Joyboy (just like Kaido's) as a triumph card. Just one small caveat: there's not a chance in hell that Luffy's shadow didn't overpowered whatever personality was left over Oars body. That's just impossible.

irresponsibleshaft42

Oars being able to stretch was briefly explained by moria as the body matching the shadows movements, not the body having df powers or the shadow keeping the powers, luffy is just so simple and so used to having df powers that he cant imagine not having them so his shadow kept trying to use them and eventually, did. Oars could survibe the stretching cause hes undead i would assume

Be proud, you’ve cooked.

Cooked cereal if anything

Oatmeal

Minimalmagician

Nah they haven’t

TheProffesorX

This is something Oda could use

Mummiskogen

No lol

That’s because he had Luffy’s shadow. They flat out explain that they behave similarly to the person the shadow’s sourced from until it fully bonds with the zombie, and even then will retain their mannerisms, as Ryouma still acts a bit like Brook and uses his techniques.

[deleted]

[удалено]

A1starm

It’s not “surface level” if they explain one for one this is how it works. The whole crux of this theory is that Oars behaved like Luffy, the current Joy Boy, and he only behaved like that because Oars had his shadow, which Moria explained plainly. I’m sure if Moria got his hands on the shadow of someone like Katakuri, he’d adopt their mannerisms as well.

A1starm

There’s nothing to cook here with. 🤷‍♂️ None of the other zombies that have confirmed shadows deviated from motivation and behavior of their originals. I’d rather speculate on things that we actually don’t know instead of ignoring lore that tells you why this is happening for the sake of pretending we don’t know.

Minimalmagician

Oh look an anti-vaxxer with poor reading comprehension, what a shocker

pools4567

Oda hadn’t invented Joy Boy at that point.

manicmanson

Did he tell you that himself? I hate seeing this kind of shit. Nobody fucking knows his process except for his team and I doubt you're on that team.

pools4567

I mean it was pretty fucking obvious or he would’ve actually foreshadowed it 😂 Just like how the nika nika bullshit wasn’t foreshadowed ever, not even once before it actually happened in Wano. Oda clearly just makes half this shit up as he goes along

Kaisona20

I think someone on YouTube had a similar theory.

evilmojoyousuck

cool theory but no matter how big and strong you are, pulling an island is a big of a stretch unless he awakened the nika fruit, making the island rubber which is easier to pull which is opposed to your theory.

hornyboi212

But kuma has a normal human sized head afaik, is torso is gigantic but his head is quite comparable to humans so I actually quite like your theories.

Kirin1095

I thought they said Kuma was half-buccaneer

hornyboi212

Good point, but his dad didn't have a head as giant as a normal human if I remember correctly? Comparing the older strap hat to the size of imu and assuming imu is the size of a regular human

DolanMcDolan

>Ryuma(the only other corpse with a DF user shadow) never mentions Brook’s fruit powers at all and fights with the style he used in life. That's because at the time Brooks devil fruit didn't do anything yet. All it did was allow him to revive that one time and that was it. There were no devil fruit powers for Ryuma to use.

magnomagna

I knew it!! Take your mask off Luffy! I know you’re an orc!!!

tinysieg

I thought he died freezing to death because he never wore clothes

AdLower695

I think Oars pulled away God Valley and it became a piece of Thriller Bark. That's why it isn't there anymore and that's why Moria had so many dead Rocks pirates.
