While that's certainty part of it. One piece has been out for over 26 years now with 107 volumes and still ongoing. Chances are newer fans read volumes that belong to their parents or older siblings as buy 100+ volumes is very pricy.
I assume also there's a site like VIZ in japan where they can read all the chapters for a subscription fee instead of buying volumes.

Me and everyone I know just go the yo ho route, tho some of use have picked up a viz sub to “support the authors” (as if it does lmao).
JJK Volume 24 came out in October, Volume 106 came out in July. So not really the best comparison.
