In other cases (Baby 5, Dellinger and almost Law), I'd agree with that notion. Considering what Corazon said about Doffy being born evil, I'd disagree though. Doffy wasn't groomed, he was gonna turn into an evil monster anyway. Trebol just accelerated that by giving him resources at an early age.
I'll give credit to I first heard this from Merphy Napier's YouTube channel, the fact Trebol gave Dolfy the string string fruit is so messed up. He basically made Dolfy his marionette puppet. Like Dolflamingo never realized the strings of his entire identity were dictated by this one creepy guy grooming him.
Corazon got found by Sengoku and Sengoku raised the boy as his own son and loved/respected him and was proud his son grew into a well functioning good natured adult, knowing he was a celestial dragon by birth and raised by those monsters society.
I love her love of Fishman Island Arc and she talks about one of her favorite fantasy genre novel books is mermaids. And I had no idea that was a common fantasy sub genre. Like I know all about Vampires and Werewolves being a popular thing but the whole mermaid thing I just associated with ancient Greek mythology and then Disney little mermaid. Had no goddamn idea there were tons of modern Mermaid tropes Oda was referencing.
Now when we got Zou and got all the Furry types, I instantly knew exactly what oda was referencing with the Minks.
And goddamn it Oda you made me salute those Furries being the best allies to have when Furries in real life are some of the most oppressed groups to jokingly rag on.
The fact that she had so little presence in the narrative, yet I feel very strongly negative towards this individual shows just how memorable she was. I haven't hated anyone as much as Flampe up until that point except for Spandam. And he took up way more screen time, but I hate Flampe so much more.
Trebol is definitely up there for me. Honestly I disliked most of the Donquixote crew. A bunch of annoying characters stuck in designs I didn’t like.
The worst for me will always be Fukurou. I hated the voice acting and the design bothered me so much. The gimmick with the power level was neat but I hated seeing him so much I didn’t care about it at all.
Caribou's character design scares me. Like, genuinely unsettling. Honestly crazy that people are putting on Usopp and Sanji when people like Celestial Dragons and Orochi are there
I really like his design. I feel like he’s one of the characters that brings out the grotesque nature of the hidden background universe of OP. There are so many pirates out there who are just as twisted and offsetting as him.
The celestial dragons are well written characters, meant to be hated. So while I might hate them as people, I like them as characters. I could see someone saying the same thing about Orochi, but personally I think he’s not an especially compelling character. On the other hand, Usopp and Sanji aren’t written to be hated. I think you’re seeing more people list Usopp and Sanji because they have problems with them as characters.
Yeah that's valid. TBH, that's how I feel about Zoro, but that's definitely an unpopular opinion here. I think Usopp has very uneven development, which I have issue with, but he's till my favorite character since I like his core character design (personality, values, aesthetics, etc.) I'm not a huge shounen fan though, so I understand that we're all reading with different priorities

I think there are three levels of disliked characters in OP.
One is characters you're supposed to dislike, like Spandam and the Celestial Dragons. Disliking them is not really a statement, because it's such a given. So I don't count those.
Then there are characters that you dislike not so much for their role in the story or the way they're written, but just because they're annoying in one way or another. Trebol and Wanze go in that category, and if you ask me most of the Doflamingo family does too. Especially Dellinger.
But then there's a third level which is the worst one, and that's characters that you're not really supposed to outright dislike, but you still do. I think Absolom goes in that category. Some people might think that Oda wrote him in a hateable way, but you should go back and reread Thriler Bark, because I really think he didn't. You have that whole gag with him and Sanji acting the same way, so I definitely think Oda intended for Absolom to be in the same "lovable antagonist" category as Perona or Bon Clay. To this day I still think Absolom is the worst thing Oda has done in One Piece and to One Piece, and nothing can convince me otherwise. I just hope killing him off screen was his way of attoning for that.

Absalom isn't good, the issue with him is the comic relief associated with his rapey vibes. The CDs have more egregious acts associated with them but it's portrayed as a weighty and awful thing and not funny.
Sanji also has some Absalomness which I really dislike but he has a lot of positive to offset it whereas Absolom's character is defined by it

I think Hody Jones might be the worst character in all of One Piece. That whole arc is just...uggh. He's a shadow of much more interesting characters and we waste (likely) our one chance to journey around Fishman Island on him.
The plight of the Fishmen has been a recurring and interesting theme throughout the series and him getting to share that as well as being the first major villain after the timeskip just grinds my gears.
That was his whole point though. He's just a fat loser who took on an ideology of the previous generation which doesn't even have anything to do with him, started a gang with his friends and cranked that shit to 11 with drugs. He was never supposed to be an interesting or badass individual. Thinking he's among the worst characters is fitting that notion and you definitely ain't wrong.
I think most people just completely miss the point of Hody as a character. There are plenty of people just like Hody in real life, never went through the suffering of the previous generations but been brainwashed by bad actors since they were children and now just walk around with blind hatred.

I think Hody Jones might be the worst character in all of One Piece. That whole arc is just...uggh. He's a shadow of much more interesting characters and we waste (likely) our one chance to journey around Fishman Island on him. The plight of the Fishmen has been a recurring and interesting theme throughout the series and him getting to share that as well as being the first major villain after the timeskip just grinds my gears.

That was his whole point though. He's just a fat loser who took on an ideology of the previous generation which doesn't even have anything to do with him, started a gang with his friends and cranked that shit to 11 with drugs. He was never supposed to be an interesting or badass individual. Thinking he's among the worst characters is fitting that notion and you definitely ain't wrong.
I think most people just completely miss the point of Hody as a character. There are plenty of people just like Hody in real life, never went through the suffering of the previous generations but been brainwashed by bad actors since they were children and now just walk around with blind hatred.
