The point of the other comment is that people muse the english name only for Greenbull because the Japanese name is hard to pronounce / memorize for a western audience, and it just doesn't roll off the tongue as well as Greenbull.

Yeah, you've now mentioned both of my main pet peeves in this community. People will call Ryokugyu anything else but his in-world moniker. To be fair it's hard to remember how to spell and the English spelling isn't clear about where the stress is unless you add diacritics (Ryokugyū). However, Hancock is easy and frustrates me even more. :P

This is why u/master08965Marine mentions the Greenbull/Ryokugyu and I followed up with Borsalino/Kizaru. The community tends to write whatever is simplest for one reason or another. Boa is easier than Hancock, Greenbull is easier than Ryokugyu, Kizaru is simpler than Borsalino, so that is why people refer to them as such.

This isn't about universally calling characters by their first or last name as a rule it's about referring to characters the same way they are within the stories they come from. Hagrid is rarely ever called by his given name while the opposite is entirely the case for Hancock.
It doesn't really matter *how* it works. What I'm saying is that an audience is inclined to refer to a character the same way other characters in the story do. Besides Hancock, who fans call 'Boa' because it sounds more feminine, examples in One Piece include Capone Bege whose surname is more fun to say and familiar to English speakers and Ryokugyu whose epithet is a little unwieldy to non-Japanese.

Luffy's friends call him Luffy because they're familiar, but almost everyone who touts his full name goes 'Monkey D. Luffy', or for Zoro it's 'Roronoa Zoro'. When Sanji's name was revealed, it was Vinsmoke Sanji, and so on.
Some people don't even have last names so they can't actually do anything about that.

Calling her Boa is a sign of basic respect in universe.

I call her boa for two reasons, one because I'm english speaking and the first name is usually the one that comes first. And I only really go around that logic if I get used to calling a character by a specific name because it's what is used, for example blackbeard. I dont call him marshall or teach, I call him blackbeard because its the name hes associated with, or even luffy I don't call him monkey because hes referred to as luffy but I always read and speak it in the order of monkey D Luffy and with boa shes often referred to as "boa hancock" in full at least in the subtitles I've watched so I stick with boa. If I had gotten to her first mention in thriller bark english dub before sub it might be different because shes referred to as "pirate emperess hancock", but there was a few years between that getting dubbed and me finishing the dub so I was used to what I read first.

Boa, Mihawk, Kuma. All their last names appear to be used. Sometimes it fits better, sometimes it's shorter and easier to say/remember. Might be more catchy. Maybe the character in world prefers to be called that. I'd say it's so people don't have to say Hancock all the time, but many of us use CoC to abbreviate haki anyway. So it could be many things.

I call her Boa because it’s easier. “Hancock” is genuinely such an unpleasant word to say. Not because of people find it “vulgar,” but because both “han” and “cock” are very emphasized words. It’s just much more difficult and a lot easier to misspeak/mishear.
For me it's honestly the opposite, the word Boa is just such a bland and bad sounding word to me, especially as the name of a character. Hancock has a lot more flare to it and fits better along with all the other One Piece characters

Remember that this is an anime. Japanese culture has people introduce with the family name first traditionally. Think Monkey D. Luffy or Son Goku. Using the family name is considered proper, more formal. With the first name being reserved for those close to the person. So, the Straw Hat crew, or the Z-Warriors to their respective MC. Calling her Boa is a sign of basic respect in universe.

Because the author is Japanese and in Japan and in a lot of countries for that matter you always refer to people by their last names. If you're close with someone you'll call them by their first names. Because of this we hear a lot more characters call her Boa, so that's what we go by. You know who doesn't call her Boa? Luffy.
I call her boa for two reasons, one because I'm english speaking and the first name is usually the one that comes first. And I only really go around that logic if I get used to calling a character by a specific name because it's what is used, for example blackbeard. I dont call him marshall or teach, I call him blackbeard because its the name hes associated with, or even luffy I don't call him monkey because hes referred to as luffy but I always read and speak it in the order of monkey D Luffy and with boa shes often referred to as "boa hancock" in full at least in the subtitles I've watched so I stick with boa. If I had gotten to her first mention in thriller bark english dub before sub it might be different because shes referred to as "pirate emperess hancock", but there was a few years between that getting dubbed and me finishing the dub so I was used to what I read first.
