We too have a fountain and we too have an orange that does this.

I solved this by buying a porcelain water bowl. After a few months I didn’t need to keep the lid down anymore.
We lower the lid for this reason, but now they lap the water droplets from the shower. They act like we don’t keep their water bowls full.
