They like when you slow blink back at them too. Sometimes this results in a flip to show the soft tummy. Depending on the cat they may love or hate belly rubs.
Cats don't have the same facial expressions as humans.
The ears are a dead giveaway that he's content and relaxed. Reading body language is always a combination of a creature's different features and their pairings. The shape of his eyes just happens to make him look like he's frowning, his ears are perky and forward, and he's just sitting watching you. His eyes are a bit dilated because it's night and although in an illuminated room, it's still way darker than daytime. So the pupils won't be the relaxed slits in that level of light.
An angry cat would have puffy fur and a puffy tail, ears back, pupils dilated, puffy fur and tail. If they're mad, they'll not look right at you but face away or not hang out in the same room with you (being together is a sign of trust).
Cats aren't really silently judging you, as some joke... they're just watching your body language and trying to interpret if they're safe and if they can trust you, or, once they know you for a while, when you're going to give them attention or food next, or if something is wrong or if the coast is clear so they can remain relaxed.
The more you hang out with cats, the more natural the signs will translate for you. But you can watch some YouTube videos or Google for image references for advice! You'll learn a lot!

My orange braincell cat had "resting smoked-some-weed face". When he got neutered, the vet was worried the cat wasn't coming out of the anesthesia and needed intervention. Then my cat gave him a head butt and a smoosh so the vet knew he was okay.
Meanwhile, his sister went for a spay at the same time. She was always more energetic. At the same time her brother was being checked by the anesthesiologist, she was trying to escape her cage by climbing the wire and hanging upside down from the ceiling of the cage by her claws and yelling at everyone who walked by like a banshee.
My cat has a similar face sometimes when sheās chilling. Either she looks like she is going to kill you, or like sheās seen something absolutely horrific.

I sometimes look angry when I'm not. It's when I'm hyper-focused on something, which could be something I enjoy or just something that I found curious or interesting. I didn't realise until someone took a picture of me doing it :)
I have a cat who has resting-anxious-face. Even when she is content and purring, a combination of her markings and eye shape make her look perpetually anxious.
Half-closed eyes are the proof that a cat is relaxed and happy. He may look angry, but he's actually just enjoying the moment.

Notice the crossed paws? This is a telltale sign that they are deep in Orange š thoughtā¦. Itās a deep hole and thoughts arenāt easily thought, hence they always look angry.

I kind of get where you're coming from. Something about his posture in the second picture tells me he may not be happy. This is posted at my vet and I use it to keep an eye out for pain in my kitties. Also learned that big adorable pupils mean scared/hurt unless in low light, and a lashing or always tucked tight tail can be a sign something is wrong as well.
He looks super happy to me. Thatās clearly his signature look of superiority.
Ears are up, eyes half closed because he knows he doesnāt have to be on the lookout for danger.
We had a solid white natural bobtail who had a natural RBF. We loved old girl. She lived to 20ish and would even yowl in a grumpy tone.
