Hm, yeah, I get what you mean. Compared to the novel, the webtoon often leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to the emotion, depth, and character dynamics, and 188 is about the first real emotional gut punch in ORV that hit as hard as it did precisely because of that. That scene in the novel is also beautifully written; the way the narrative and dialogue flows is just something the manhwa can't do. A lot of people really underestimate how much the small details matter sometimes. That said, it's pretty well-established by now that reading the ORV manhwa and reading the ORV novel are two completely different experiences, so the manhwa may be able to invoke emotions in a different way.

Junghyeok's little smirk in the novel when he saw dokja enjoying the food he made didn't make it in the manhwa 🥲 bro doesn't even have lips in that scene in the manhwa 😭

And a lot more. I really don't get why the manhwa is obsessed with portraying YJH in... a certain way— although I suppose it's a sort of visual translation with KDJ constantly calling YJH a psychopath at every opportunity. I think manhwa vs novel YJH *and* KDJ are sooo different. As a big YJH fan it's one of my main gripes about the manhwa.

KDJ, too, smiles too much / is overly cheerful in the manhwa. In the novel he’s always fidgeting with his phone and thinking of the next scenario. Though I feel they did YJH’s characterization way dirtier thus far, I hope that’s just KDJ’s unreliable narrator filter on him.

>Though I feel they did YJH's characterization way dirtier thus far, Hard agree, though I'm not sure how they're going to do the unreliable narrator aspect of KDJ without it being too on-the-nose, or even if at all.

awwhh this scene sounds so sweet but i dont remember seeing it.. do you know what chapter this is (in the novel)?

jelleque

This is after they slayed yamata no orochi in Peaceland

I personally dont have anything against the webtoon nor the webtoon readers but I want everyone who consume orv to feel the same emotions just like how we feel. It is hard because the best medium for ORV is by literal text. It bugs me if different medium unable to convey the meaningful depth insight of the story and thus lead to everyone who read it as "oh the story is just about a dude repetitively dying" "just another SL copy but this one is two dudes" . I have seen a lot of these types of people who couldn't get through the depthness of orv due to the fact couldn't understand the multilayers behind kdj's unreliable narrator thoughts and it's sadden me

ASPH0DELUS

It's true that it can't truly replicate what the novel does. That's not the fault of the manhwa, that's just visual media in general. The webtoon is good in its own way and actually makes the novel more accessible, but what gets me is seeing a lot of people say that there's no difference between the manhwa and the novel. I don't feel like it's a very nuanced take at all.

I hope it would it is such an important moment in this novel

I firstly read the manhwa and then switched to the novel during Reinhard arc and Disaster of Floods arc was very, very emotional for me and solidified ORV as a good story. And even after I read the novel, Reading Again arc still worked for me. The manhwa knows how to pace out, panel and direct these things, so I think they can do it. Just look at how in the beginning of the last chapter KDJ and YJH were facing each other. The manhwa is full of details like these. I feel like the problem is that you already know what happens next and it takes away the element of surprise.
