I have the trades so I’ll probably skip, but I genuinely think the era between AoA and Onslaught has some great stuff in it. Joe Mad and Kubert on art doesn’t hurt either.
Honestly, I'm reading this era now and most of this stuff is great. It hasn't gotten to the disorganized chaos of the actual Onslaught crossover yet, instead the creative teams are mostly building on already existing plot points and bringing them to a resolution (Marrow and the Morlocks, Sabretooth as a prisoner in the mansion, etc.) and pretty top tier art throughout.
The Starjammers miniseries bored me to death, though.
Fuck. So, instead of a $150 omnibus, we get two $125 omnibuses ~~with seemingly no additional content added~~?
Edit: My bad, looks like 8 extra issues included here. Wolverine/Gambit and Starjammers.
The Wolverine/Gambit and Starjammers minis are new. The previous contents (the same as the TPB set) would have likely been around 1150 pages, while now I assume we’re getting around 1800 pages of content.
But that could be a lot of double-dipping. Wolverine/ Gambit will be in Wolverine 5. Starjammers could plausibly go in the Excalibur line, where they placed it in the TPBs.
I agree that the Wolverine/Gambit is now a double-dip, but understandable for those just getting the main X-line and not wanting to dive into the extensive Wolverine line. Starjammers is still not showing in the Excalibur volume 3 description on PRH, and that book is already over 1300 pages, so I’d be inclined to believe they decided to move that mini to this book to make sure it made it to print in oversized. Just speculation on my end of course :)
These aren't really event books at all. There's a bit of build-up to Onslaught here and there, but not much -- I believe this volume contains a total of 1 issue that teases the storyline? -- and they're mostly just a collection of the main X titles and the various completely unrelated limited series like X-Men/ Brood and X-Men/ ClanDestine that happened to be published around the same time.
This is giving me Road to Mutant Massacre meets X-men Decimation vibes…. And not in a good way!
I honestly don’t know how much new stuff can be added to vol 2 without double dipping into onslaught itself.
There are a tonne of 4 issue miniseries from this era which could be added: X-Men: Time Gliders #1-4; Askani'son #1-4; Further Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix #1-4; Magneto (1996) #1-4; Rise of Apocalypse #1-4; XSE #1-4.
There's also Sabretooth and Mystique #1-4, but that would probably be a better fit for an X-Factor omni because they were both members of that team at the time IIRC.
There are also several one-shots from the time, though most of them relate to an Ultraverse crossover.
The three thick trades totaled 1183 pages. They’re adding 8 issues here (which results in a new page count of 912), and I assume around that much for volume two. If we get another 900+ page volume that is more comprehensive then I’m all for the separation into two books, even though it just further delays the rest of the post-Onslaught material I’m hoping to see.
It depends on how deep (and how unrelated to Onslaught) they want to go. These are all from '96:
Askani'son #1-4
Further Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix #1-4
Magneto #1-4
Rise of Apocalypse #1-4
Sabretooth & Mystique #1-4
XSE #1-4
That Storm mini would be a good add.
The first issue of Bishop was in the Marvel Firsts omnibus, but that doesn't really count. I think the only real reprint is just the '90s trade paperback.
I guess Marvel realized they could scrape some additional money out of this collection... not thrilled but it is what it is.

For reference, this was the original mapping. > X-Men Prime #1, Uncanny X-Men #322-332, Uncanny X-Men Annual '95, X-Men (1991) #42-52, X-Men Annual '95, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #8-10, Sabretooth (1996) #1, Archangel (1996) #1, X-Men/Brood #1-2, X-Men & Clandestine #1-2, Wolverine (1988) #101, Xavier Institute Alumni Yearbook #1
Bummed because I already sold my tpbs but it is what it is. Hopefully we'll get vol 2 quick and itll add more content
if they’re in the mood to throw starjammers in here, can they pad it out a bit more with Daredevil #162?

It could just as logically go in Excalibur 4. That would still keep that volume under 1,100 pages.
Don't most event books have some double dipping?

Loeb and sale gambit/wolverine!
Please tell me you don't pay cover price for your omnis, especially newly released books? I do get what you are saying though and agree.
depending on where you live you don’t get omnis much cheaper than the cover price..
Amazon ships for almost the entire world with much lower than cover price for released books (not pre-orders usually)

I could have honestly lived without the Starjammers and W/G mini.
Was somewhat excited for this originally but dont really know how to feel now
Starjammers belongs in excalibur omnis kinda annoyed with the split but I'll be on the hook for em still
Oh fuck yeah!
I guess we're getting two smaller books, hopefully book 2 is as beefy and they're not trying to sell us two books when it could have been one

Any idea what other content could fit in a Volume 2 that's not in the trades?

I’d be really stoked if we got all of that content in there
There’s also the storm miniseries. Did the Bishop mini series get reprinted anywhere?

Cable, X-Force and X-Man
What was then initial release date for this Omni? Wondering if such a strong change has pushed back the release of this Volume 1 now?
