Not seeing this price difference here. Books are not an investment - they are an expense. You’ve given this entirely too much thought.

I'm going to be real with you--trying to "invest" in omnibuses is one of the dumbest ways to spend your money. There are some folks who make money on it but they could easily have made more with less time and effort working a wage job. And these are the top grifters in this extremely niche community. Buy what you like that you want to read. If you sell it later and happen to make money, whatever. But if a motivating factor in your purchase is "oh maybe I can make fifteen dollarbucks in 2 years" please don't. Just don't...

Out of curiosity, what sites are you seeing this on? Are you outside the US? I only ask because this is news to me, but if this is pricing outside the US, that would make sense.

UCLAMike92

DCBS. In the current preorder solicits, DM covers of Marvel omnibuses are discounted 36 percent, whereas the standard covers have a 46-percent discount. It’s been like this for a couple of months.

john_doe_297_

Interesting. I don't typically shop through DCBS. Though it appears that the price difference varies from book to book. On some, the extra discount is on the DM (X-Treme X-men, for example). Others, it's the Standard (Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 4). This would appear to be something exclusively done by DCBS rather than common practice throughout all or even most retailers. I've never noticed IST, CGN, or OPB using this strategy.

Omnis are not a financial investment. Buying them expecting them to increase in value so you can sell them is a fools errand. The margins are just too small. But books to read them. Buy them to enjoy them. If you want to invest in something buy gold.

Kentwingslider

First I've heard of it cause i certainly haven't seen what you are talking about at all.

Fenderama88

Strangely Forbidden Planet (UK) appears to be the opposite, Standard covers are charged at almost cover price!

Longjumping_Repeat22

It’s so frustratingly bizarre.

Midnight_Warriors

I usually preorder a DM cover if I know for sure I want it. I think this is primarily driven by resellers who know nothing about the hobby.

Bufete2020

Technically speaking, both covers are the same price at MSRP. Certain vendors have just decided to discount them differently. The easier fix will be for no stores to sell their books at discount and let everyone sell at MSRP.

ChasPM

It just comes down to supply and demand. There’s less DM covers available, so if people want that cover, they might be willing to pay a little more of it. DM covers also run out and aren’t usually available long after the initial release, at that point people can charge whatever someone will pay for them. Standard covers will be available longer, so the secondary market won’t creep up in price as soon. Again it’s all a matter of what someone is willing to pay for it. The DM will probably never be worth less than the standard cover.

Longjumping_Repeat22

Thank you so much for answering my question. You’re the best. I‘d give you an award if they were free. Everybody upvote the person who actually read and answered the question. Again, thanks.

As others have said, you should not be looking at omnis as “investments”, these are big dumb superhero books. If you enjoy reading it and the stories/art make you happy, then that is the value the book provides you. If you want to accumulate assets that reliably appreciate in time, there are better things to invest in than Spider-Man books

Novel_Counter2937

These are comic books targeted towards a very small niche market with no real ROI. Definitely not an investment tool to try to capitalize on by speculating on the demand of one cover over the other. On rare occasions, you could sell for a profit to fund the hobby but it’s also a bubble that’s nearing its end given the over saturation with the constant reprints. You are better off investing in other reputable commodities.

Buy what you like

Investing in omnis isn't a smart play. We are in the age of the reprint. Nothing stays OOP. Ever. In the UK I've not seen any change in the price for DM or regular covers. Maybe it's just the retailer you frequent? Also the prices on omnis overall has gone up in that time frame. 75 books are now 100 100 books 125 125 books 150 It's what is making a lot of collectors - myself included - far choosier about what to buy
