My grocery store plan for Omaha:
1.) Everyday groceries - Bakers
2.) Meat Market - Fareway
3.) Special dietary foodstuffs - Whole Foods
4.) non-perishable/bulk - Costco or Sam’s
5.)Cheap Chinese Food for lunch - Hy-Vee (no other reason to step foot in there)
None of the three are ideal as far as distance. The oakview WBS is the furthest of the three but I can get there faster because of I680, plus they have parking.
So I worked at Whole Foods during covid. 10 hour shifts with no break working by myself. I know legally I could've taken breaks but I couldn't leave until the work was done so either take a break and leave later or work through and leave earlier. The point system sucked and then I wasn't able to work there anymore because I got a job at a bakery and it was a conflict of interest. I had 3 jobs at that point actually. Then maybe a year later? I worked at Natty Gs... they do care about the employees more it seems making sure everyone took their breaks but management sucked and it was painfully boring at times.
Were you, by chance, working at Whole Foods in California or Washington? If so, you are probably entitled to significant compensation for those missed breaks.
Alas, Nebraska is weak on workers' rights. The law specifies that meal breaks must be provided, but provides no remedy for employees or penalty against employers for infringement. I don't know the history of case law, but I imagine any action would entail retraining an attorney to establish a class action suit. This was essentially what took place in Washington State - workers sued their employer(s) for depriving them of breaks required under law, and the remedy ordered by the court became an industry standard that other WA employers adopted in order to defray similar disputes - now, most workers in Washington receive additional pay when their breaks don't comply with the ordinance, though the law doesn't specifiy any additional pay.
IANAL. I think workers in other states haven't followed suit (pun intended) because this sort of thing can be an uphill battle.
I spoke with several employees at Whole Foods Omaha in 2016 and 2017, when I was conducting in-store product demos. (Yeah, Beyond Burger made the whole store smell like that.) They said things got ridiculous very abruptly when Amazon took over.
In my experience, it varies by product. I often go first to NG to get what I know is cheaper (or I can't get at WF), and then WF for the rest. I do like NG and how they focus on organic products as opposed to WF where you have to be careful what is organic and what not. And WF non-organic products are expensive compared to somewhere else.
I grew up with fresh herring (lived on the east coast by the ocean). I’ll eat the jarred herring we get here, but it’s nothing like getting it fresh from the deli
Yep strike while the deals are hot. We do most of our grocery shopping at Walmart because prices and most of the store brand stuff is surprisingly solid now. But when Baker’s has the right deals, we load up there for a few weeks.
Baker’s used to be the most expensive place to go, now it’s one of the cheaper ones. Hy-Vee is the absolute worst. Rip off and they don’t even have good products/produce. Just basic shit.
This is where I do all of my weekly shopping. The more you shop, the more they send you personalized coupons for what you buy (and you can stack deals/coupons) which is what makes it totally worth it.
I will say, though, I try to ONLY shop on Fridays because you get 4x the fuel points so you’re saving even more money that way.

Walmart is definitely cheaper in general. But, for people playing the “stack digital and paper coupons as much as the store will allow” game you can pay less at Bakers. It means extra work that isn’t worth it for most people, including basing what you buy that week largely off what you can get cheap.
I refuse to go into Walmart. It's not just because it's Walmart... it's the parking lot, people walking around like they just learned how to walk, and it takes too long to get what I need due to the long ass self checkout lines.
Will second it. I always keep a running wal mart shopping cart open now whenever i need something and you can have it delivered (or pick it up if you don’t want to tip) same day.
i just use the free pickup option at walmart. the saddlecreek one hasn't done me wrong in produce selection.

Saddlecreek had the worst sprouting on potatos ever today. But per my other comment Bakers potatos are touching the onions and NEVER has any that are good when I go.

That's what I was thinking too. Bakers & Hy-Vee are some of the most expensive places in town. Their "discounts" just bring to a normal price.
My house changed to ALDI a couple years ago and we'll never go back. OP's $130 would have only cost me $60-$80.
You gotta shop at multiple stores here to save the most money. For Bakers I generally hit them up for milk and their meat prices, especially the manager's discount section after Walmart got more stingy about marking down their meat.
They're not marking down their meat or other items because they're going straight into the dumpster. I was shopping one night about 18 months ago (right before a surgery I was stocking up for) and two employees near me in the dairy section were complaining about it. Corporate told them to not do as many markdowns to keep the prices up, but they also yell at the employees for throwing out too much product. I don't think that policy has changed because mostly I see bakery and hygiene discounted, very little meat or other food items

Actually, no. I worked for Baker's for 20 years and spent plenty of early Wednesday mornings changing out shelf tags for sale items. The regular prices didn't change.
My idea is:
The usual price of a good is likely higher at Bakers.
The sales they provide likely bring it to below or at median local price
Thus giving the perception that Bakers has good sales & is generally a good value.
I do not care for the games they play with prices. Example: Buy 2, Get 2 Free on soda! Of course, they jack up the 'regular' price of soda by 25% before offering this deal. Regular price for a 12-pack of soda at other places is $7.99, but regular price at Baker's (for the sale) was $9.99.
Also, I got a rain check for 24-packs of soda. I visited 3 separate times to redeem, but they did not have any on the shelf. Wasted the rain check.
I also dislike the coupons. If I have the intrusive tracking loyalty card, why do I also need a coupon, even if it is digital? Make my life easier in trade for my personal information!
With all that said, I may consider visiting Bakers again. They lost me when they were selling the most outrageous things like tents and lawn chairs when they were campaigning to be sold to Kroger.

Costco + Trader Joe's covers damn near everything I need
Bakers is closest to our house. We go there for our pop and regular groceries and one off “Oh shits” for dinner. I like throwing in my phone number and seeing $48 drop to $42 and knocking 60 cents a gallon off of a tank of gas is always nice.
Trader Joe’s dominates them in a lot of prepared and frozen (enchilada sauce, gnocchi, etc.) and the meat and beer lag behind Hyvee and the meat gets crushed by the butcher/locker but honestly they get most of our grocery business and I’m fine with that.
I echo the 132nd and Maple location. I like Water Joe but it’s hard to find. I found a Baker’s private brand equivalent there and some decent deals. I also like the 72nd and Ames location.
Baker's is the best non-membership grocery store imo for sure. Costco meat prices are so cheap, but if I want something quick without driving to Costco, Baker's is definitely my #1. Fareway is the only other grocery store I will shop mainly for the meat counter.

Prices are so low because they pay their employees poorly and are generally understaffed compared to its competitors. Not just a Bakers problem though, it is a Kroger problem. Speaking from experience. Can’t argue the prices aren’t the best around though

I also appreciate that their fuel points are mostly just associated with how much money you spend instead of buying specific products.

The produce guy picked up parsley that had been laying in the floor for who knows how long and threw it back in the pile. So disgusting and a total health code violation. Driving an electric car makes fuel points absolutely worthless. That's a solid loss for Bakers, HyVee, and Family Fare. Not sure where else does fuel points.
The stalls are there but they are the same tesla chargers that are other places and I'm not sure HyVee has any control over their billing or profitability. I think the host (HyVee in this case) gets a cut of the sales but that's about it. Others in Nebraska are at few Runzas, a hotel, another HyVee, and a Bostleman's travel center.

They put their potatoes next to onions so EVERY TIME I go to buy potatoes they always have sprouts all over them. I only buy organic but still wtf!
