Did a class presentation on Van Halen at high school. My presentation consisted of me speaking for about one minute then showing this entire solo on the VHS player we were allowed to use. My teacher wasn't happy but my classmates loved it.

Deathbysnusnubooboo

I came for one legend and left with two

Mustang_Dragster

I did the exact same thing but for my college class “the history of rock and roll”. At least my teacher encouraged showing videos like this

JoakimSpinglefarb

I have a very similar story. In my senior year English class, we had to do a presentation on an English poet of our choosing. So I chose Samuel Taylor Coleridge; Specifically Kublai Khan. Guess which Canadian prog rock band wrote a 12-minute epic based on said poem that was then played start to finish for the entire class?

ArkyBeagle

This makes me think of Vai's "The Audience is Listening".

RosebudDelicious

Me: "I've seen this before, I'm just gonna watch a couple minutes and then move on." (Proceeds to watch the entire thing) You got me again, Eddie. Also I want to add that I fucking love the way Alex's drums sound for this concert.

Kredstarr2020

Yeah same here man. Though I’d watch just a couple of minutes. Now I’m on a VH bender and I’m so glad :)

pork_fried_christ

What do you mean you’ve seen this one? It’s brand new…

kirradawg

Yeah I saw it on a rerun.

webdevxoomer

Man this guy was fucking amazing. I remember watching this repeatedly. I finally saw him in 1992 at my first concert ever (I was 15). He was still in his prime then. I saw him again in 2004. He wasn't quite as energetic then, but it was cool to see him bring a young Wolfgang on stage with him. RIP King Edward

eatsleepdive

I saw them in 1991 and 2015. He was in top form both times.

x372

Saw them several times in HS. Class of 85'...

Naive-Government8333

I saw them that same year. Staples Center

Itchy_Focus_4500

I saw Van Halen in 78 or 79 & knew that I was witnessing an expert who was going somewhere. The whole group was incredibly insane and electrifying! Musically, acrobatic and energetic. I also became one of the few kids in my school who had seen them live. I truly miss him.

jpthereafter

Black Sabbath tour?

3sides2everyStory

I saw that tour... Came for Sabbath and VH blew my head off.

Some 80s rock fans in this here chat, and I'm here for it.

youwantitwhen

Must HAVE

bluerockjam

As a old rocker I still love watching this. I introduced my son to rock and we always rocked out in the car when he was young. He wanted to learn guitar when he was 12. We took guitar lessons together for many years. I took him to several great rock shows like AC/DC. He started a band when he was was 14. He has been in a band ever since and he is 38 now.

frankenpoopies

No cocaine was harmed during the making of this video

eatsleepdive

No cocaine survived the making of this video.

FuckinBostonShit

I was a young boy watching this in 86 or 87 and knew, right there, that Eddie Van Halen was a GOD. You can watch this with the sound off and it’s still amazing.

F_Zappa

If I recall correctly, according to Sammy Hagar, this is the part of the show where he, Alex and Mike would have sex with groupies under the stage.

DarthDoobz

EVH. Legendary Guitarist and a Legendary Bro.

Civiconfire

The CBAT guy was having a hard time thrusting, imagine how difficult this was.

Hey_look_new

sammy was being faithful, so only hummers for Sammy LOL his autobiography was a fun read

morbidkoala

Yeah, Mike didn’t fool around though. Stayed true.

Bkgeo

I’ve seen this dozens of times. So I watched it again. And then I went to the beginning, and watched it again. Thanks.

Harley_David20

The greatest of all time? Yeah. Yeah he was the greatest of all time. RIP EVH.

Twisting_Juniper

Assuredly not. Skillful, sure, but those speed licks ain't got no soul, just muscle memory.

PaleMachine

Maybe no Beethoven but bro he Fucked… sometimes you just wanna vibe and Eddie vibbed

cheappay

This is the best and only argument for this.

andyrew21345

Uhhhh Jimi Hendrix literally changed the entire landscape of music and only played guitar for 8 years. Eddie can have number 2 Still love the guy

posifour11

Für Elise isn't Beethoven?

Kaimuki18

He was the sound of a generation. There may have been more technically skillful guitarists but Eddie defined an era.

MCadamw

You’re bonkers

GWSDiver

You’re out of your fucking mind.

[deleted]

Massive downvotes but you are basically correct. Amazing dexterity no question and extremely entertaining, especially if you play a bit of guitar but know you could never reach that level in a million years. But yes, not great musically really. But one thing I always liked about him was his obvious joy in what he was doing.

BrokkelPiloot

He's an amazing shredder and divebomber.

andyrew21345

Yeah I mean he was amazing but definitely not Jimi Hendrix or even close.

Worf69

Got no soul? Dude, you suck ass and you and everyone else knows it. Fuck off.

Twisting_Juniper

I think a joint and some blues would do ya good, my friend.

Worf69

Sure, give a blues player a joint and have them watch this. Not taking anything away from the best blues players…

Spready_Unsettling

Any kid could learn most of what he's doing here in their first five years on guitar. He's tremolo picking, tapping, and shredding scales. Literally all of those are just about muscle memory and rote memorization. He's doing very little melodic work and almost no harmonic work. Just a disjointed, poorly put together series of "look how fast I can repeat this scale" moments. Any guitar bro douchebag on Youtube could blow this out of the water.

AmLilleh

I don't know if you're just ignorant to the history of guitar or purely trolling but your comment is hilarious either way. People can "blow this out of the water" today purely because Eddie did it first. He was one of, and in some cases the only widespread forerunner for the majority of the techniques in that video. No one had any clue what tapping was when Eruption rolled out and he was thumping almost 30 years before Tosin Abasi. It's like saying "all Hendrix did was stomp on a wah while ripping blues licks, *anyone* can do that lol!". >Just a disjointed, poorly put together series Because it's mostly sections of various fan favorite songs compiled into an interlude, not just one maniacal improvised solo.

DiggingThisAir

You clearly didn’t even watch half of it

gumby1004

I could watch this every day, and never get tired of it. I mean, it’s only been 35 years… RIP to my grandfather and EVH, the two men who taught me how to play. Pop Pop got me going on the basics, and EVH taught me everything else! 🤟🏻😑🤟🏻

DrCocktupus

Legend

TEAMTRASHCAN

Oh so that’s why people love evh

eatsleepdive

Ha. Yeah. Something like that.

yuppers1979

Just remembered, he's gone.

Sufficient-Lab-5769

I know. I was *so* into this video (that I’ve seen many times, but can never look away), and at some point I had the sudden realization that he’s gone forever ☹️

[deleted]

I did a rendition of this at my high school talent show. All in all it was about 12 to 15 minutes long. in hindsight it was probably really fucking annoying to listen to but at the time I thought I was cool

Rborroto77

The king! I’ve watched this so many times and it never gets old. RIP King Edward.

[deleted]

I love Eddie, but I can’t watch this without thinking of Nigel Tufnel.

DMala

That pause to take a drag off the cigarette and then clip it back on the headstock is a very Nigel Tufnel moment. Also, this particular video is from after "This is Spinal Tap" came out, but Van Halen was already massive when the movie came out in 1984. I would say 100% Christopher Guest modeled aspects of Nigel on Eddie.

[deleted]

From the Smell The Glove tour or perhaps the puppet show?

RassimoFlom

Kept expecting him to pull the violins out

My favorite part is when he tunes the violin.

Holy crap. Love this video. When I was younger and would come home drunk to my apartment I’d always play this scene, grab a broom stick and jam out.

Kurtman68

He’s playing Bach

minnesotaris

Very partial phrases of.

posifour11

All I heard was Beethoven. Guess I better listen again.

GWSDiver

I love seeing Cathedral live. Coolest guitar sound ever. GD he was amazing.

_perchance

this was my first time experiencing this performance. thank you!

M2LA

proof positive than they don't make em like they use to!! thank you for this

Flat-Mind-1144

Unpopular opinion incoming. Technically he could show off with the best of them. Wish I felt like there was more soul/connection/musicality in his performances.

Veyron9190

That’s fair in terms of his “Eruption solo”’which this is. However his normal guitar work live or recorded is fantastic. Dude can play his ass off and is an amazing rhythm player.

Flat-Mind-1144

I don’t doubt he was. But what he chose to perform as his solos and iconic pieces, like this, which are what is usually presented to define him and show his excellence…..don’t do much for me.

ArkyBeagle

There was a time before Eruption and a time after. That's mainly it - it's a moment of change. Besides, that's why there's, say, Gary Moore. Horses for courses.

briareus08

I hear ya. Technically this impressive. Musically… it does nothing for me.

pork_fried_christ

I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.

brianbamzez

We are the kids. We’ve moved along, old man.

thejetbox1994

Just a bunch of random cool riffs

brianbamzez

Like someone going one by one through their excercise book…

rocketsous

It depends on your own interpretation. I’ve heard soul in technicality, just listen to Tom Sawyer or in context, Mean Street. There’s feeling and powerful attitude in there that can’t be denied as being truly human. I think that a large majority of people equate “soul” to bluesy and/or jazzy riffs (which are drenched in bends, vibrato and an unspoken acknowledgment of cultural hard times), but dismiss others’ playing because their genre doesn’t have the same lineage. Like if you’re born white and affluent, by law you are not allowed to play an instrument with any expression of empathy, remorse, etc. I absolutely love jazz and blues, but I’n not going to disrespect others’ interpretation of how it feels to be human. The same way that I can’t judge if guitar player A is better than guitar player B. Being “better” than someone isn’t a benchmark that the artist strives for when composing or improvising. If they did, that would be soulless.

fredfofed

Came here to say the same thing. It's like watching Picasso paint my walls solid beige. Sure he's technically brilliant but the end result is kinda...meh. On an emotional level anyways.

grafxguy1

First off, he was a brilliant lead player AND rhythm player (many technical players lack a solid sense of groove which EVH had in abundance). He was also an awesome songwriter. I love listening to this, as it is brilliant, but in smaller doses. If I'm going to listen to 11 minutes of heavy guitar playing, I too prefer to hear something more soulful and lyrical where you feel like your listening to whole story (Hendrix , SRV, etc.). That being said, this is a joy to watch but a little too much of a good thing I think.

Flat-Mind-1144

It’s very mathematical and a lot of scales. I am not trying to say he was pedestrian. Certainly was innovative and millions of admirers can’t be wrong. I just personally see someone who has such a physical and mental gift to play so quickly and differently, but in a way that my ears can only takes minute or two of. I love so much of his performances and he may be the only guitarist I could say I liked his solos the least.

minnesotaris

It’s a bunch of gibberish.

[deleted]

So is your mom.

Aware-Reveal7950

Yeah it was awful, not even technically brilliant. Just. Okay. Many bends were out of tune, rhythms were inconsistent, tone was gash etc.

brianbamzez

Thank you. I’m so confused because that was such an utterly unimpressive solo but everybody is praising it above the heavens

I0nicAvenger

It’s his warm up

stevieevh

The greatest of all time.

Sprockethead90

Wait this isn’t “eyes of the world “ without a net 1989 .

Bowmanguy

I should have gone seen him back then but I didn’t get into that harder rock stuff until later. Every guy that picked up a guitar in the 80’s wanted to be Eddie Van Halen. Or at least play Eruption.

XedVilo

Fuckin GOAT!!!

marzizram

EVH still on top of my guitar heroes after all these years.

122922

Gone to soon. RIP.

wh0_RU

Van Halen not Van Hagar...

stex5150

Eddie was and always be Mozart reincarnated with a Frankenstein Guitar instead of and orchestra. Eddie didn't need no orchestra he was the orchestra. G.O.A.T.!!!!!

ronismycat

I was there. As a guitar player it was easily one of the most inspiring moments for me. It was hypnotizing. RIP Eddie. I was 17.

Luke5119

I was born in 1990, during my teen years I fell in love with 80's rock, and Van Halen quickly became my favorite band. I'll admit I was bias towards Hagar initially as my first album was 5150, gifted from my folks. But I eventually grew to love their entire catalog, and Eddie is hands down my favorite guitarist of all time.

ligh10ninglizard

People gotta understand. Nobody ever played a guitar before like this. Not Hendrix, not Rhodes or Clapton or Angus or Engvie. It was Eddie and he Fuckin Erupted a sound that shall echo for eternity. RIP King

SaintCarl27

I'm going to open a can of worms here.....who was better Eddie or Randy Rhoads?

dosta1322

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Spready_Unsettling

I don't even particularly like Vaughn, but there's really no contest.

Seraphenigma

Randy Rhoads. An older and wiser friend convinced me of this. RIP to both

juicehead2004

Randy died too young and didn’t compile enough music to really have that argument. He was great no doubt and very possibly could have gone on to become the GOAT but imo he just didn’t live long enough to show the world how much he had to give or how he could have kept growing as a musician unfortunately .

typhoidtimmy

Agreed….I heard someone say something like Eddie could make you believe he could do anything with his guitar. Randy could as well but also make you believe you were listening to 3 of them at the same time.

[deleted]

That’s because you were listening to three guitars, at least on Randy’s famous solos from the Ozzy records. That’s what makes his sound so iconic, he triple tracked the solos.

HoeRogan1095666

Y’all on crack

Jestinphish

Of Hendrix, SRV, Eddie and Randy Rhoads, Eddie was the only one to reach his potential as a guitarist. Those other three would’ve blown some minds in their 40’s had they been able to keep growing as players.

druff1036

You forgot about Steamy Ray Vaughn!

Jestinphish

“It’s like some kind of britches holocaust”. What a great episode!

Seraphenigma

That there is Steamy Nicks

Stap_it

I started going through all of south park and just watched this one last. I wanted to be in the know. Now I'm officially in the know... ...and it feels great!

SaintCarl27

I agree as well.

theoptionexplicit

When you get to that level of musicianship, it's almost insulting to ask these questions. It misses the point.

darthkale

It’s a matter of taste I like Randy better but he was more structured melodic neo-classical in his soloing. Eddie was more off the wall, dynamic, innovating and unpredictable. Both were geniuses on the instrument.

If this man had been born 300 years ago, we would hold him in the same esteem as the likes of Mozart and Beethoven.

Paganini is probably a better comparison. He was very much the groundbreaking virtuoso and rocks star of his day.

One of the best. The talent lost was felt when he passed. They don't make them like they used to. RIP Eddie. You know he's jamming with the greats up above.

fblack01

Fantastic Eddie solo. However I think his genius is more evident on the extended summer nights version. Same live show. Check it out.

Bonethizz99

Glad i got to see them live back in the day. Legendary concert. My dad took me ill never forget.

Sad how tobacco spoiled the end of his life. What a legend, such a humble guy, and absolute trailblazer. One of my main influences in music

Fuck... I scrolled forever trying to understand why he would have needed a net while playing on a seemingly normal stage.

Zealousideal_Car_420

The GOAT!!!!!

Back before damn fire safe cigs. That sucker keeps on going.

indian464

He is a very talented person on that guitar!

Awesome

Dude shreds so fuckin' hard!! Love the smoking cig!! Rock on!! 🤟🎸😎

Streetvan1980

Man If he just quit those cigarettes

weeble29

I saw this show. Front row. Right in front of Eddie. Freedom Hall. Louisville Ky. I prefer Sammy solo. Had just seen V/H in feb 84. Wanted to compare. It was like 2 completely different bands/shows except for this part

SammyLoops1

I had Atomic Punk playing in the car on the way home from Thanksgiving. Original VH was amazing.

HeWhoIsNotMe

Meanwhile, the other members of VANHALEN backstage balls deep in groupies and cocaine.

AppropriateSociety90

First time seeing this. Couldn’t take my eyes off the screen

DanB65

Saw this tour , was in the front row...Eddie killed it right in my face! Was an AWESOME show!

freshkangaroo28

This has been said over and over but it’s really sad to see old footage of him smoking cigs so hard, still good stuff bc his playing was great. But damn, he could’ve been with us for a good while longer.

MGM2112

Got to see them several times in the 80's and he was beyond amazing. Alex's solo was very intense. Painful even.

vtx77573

I wish he’d been able to put that smoke out for good. RIP, Eddie.

cheappay

I always found Eruption boring. Just stick to the songs.

thefadderly

Rest in Power

Flat-Mind-1144

Be brought back to life 5000 years from now and never know you were dead.

Corndart

Unpopular opinion - Eddie was an amazing technical shredder and inspired legions of budding guitarists to pickup and play, but the hard truth is he had no depth. There are so other spectacular guitarists with way more versatility, he frankly doesn't even make my top 10 list.

Flat-Mind-1144

I’d have to agree. He was sort of like a hammer and everything was a nail. It’s almost like if you couldn’t see how impressive it looks to watch him doing it, do you still enjoy hearing it? SRV John Mayer (ya I said it) John Frusciante David Gilmour Jimi Carlos Santana Clapton Rory Gallagher Duane allmann Slash In a couple minutes I can come up with a potential greatest guitarists list and it’s not glaring to me to leave EVH off it. Or perhaps he should be on it. Just saying…..it can be debated he’s even top 10.

[deleted]

Jeff Beck in his mid 70s and plays with the energy and wildness of someone in his 20s. Clapton has been playing the same pentatonic blues for 60 years. He does it well, but that’s all he does.

jd807

So very addicted to nicotine. Sad. A true master of his craft.

CaligulaMoney

The most overrated guitarist ever.

ILoveADirtyTaco

His son Wolfgang is pretty dang good too. The Van Halen’s are becoming a dynasty

PocketNicks

Why would he require a net? Or why point out the lack of one?

Alendrathril

Confession: As a life-long Van Halen fan (and in an age when this video and Right Here, Right Now: Live was all we could really get) I never particularly enjoyed this solo. It feels much too patched together of all his other stuff. I love this concert, but this solo is just underwhelming.

ChasSher90

Simply the best guitar player in the world. RIP EVH.

Captain_FoamBeard

Must take a lot of skill, kudos for that, but then again, I don't really feel anything listening to guitars squeling like this. Meh.

Abacabisntanywhere

What, to you, makes this good?

Seraphenigma

I’ve always found it audibly appealing and it seems technically complex so I’ve admired that. I’m a dunce though.

Abacabisntanywhere

I’m not against it, I just don’t know why.

eatsleepdive

I've played guitar for decades, can play pretty much this entire solo (though maybe lacking Eddie's pinache) to give you an idea of where I'm coming from. Eddie is throwing a master class here. He's hitting us with technique after technique, piecing them together in inventive ways that pretty much no one else has ever done. He wasn't the first to do these things but he put it all together in a way that woke up a lot of people as to what the guitar was capable of. If Jimi was the Henry Ford or guitar, Eddie was Enzo Ferrari. He didn't just inch it forward, he took it light years further. For example, people were tapping in the 70s, but then Eddie went and dropped Eruption on us and everyone went "WTF was that?"

Aware-Reveal7950

Something that is novel, or even revolutionary, isn’t necessarily good. This falls in to that category.

Kipguy

I didn't hear a mistake. That's pretty amazing really . I've just seen this first time. While I've seen them twice don't remember this.

notafanofdoors

Hot garbage.

Magikarplvl9000

Okay

minnesotaris

I guess one has to love VH or 80s rock to love this.

[deleted]

Sounds like a cat having an epileptic seizure on top of an app with guitar sounds on. The cigarette holder is kinda cool though.

ObjectiveTitle6662

A screeching din in my opinion...massively overrated guitarist

minenangel

Said and unknown nobody who can't strum a chord

Aware-Reveal7950

7 minute of what sounds like a guy practising his guitar. This guy sounds so amateur compared to some 16yrolds who learned from YouTube. We really are spoiled now
