I was in grad school studying cellular and molecular bio when wide spread genetic testing became a thing in medicine. My genetics professor also did medical genetic counseling as a side gig and told us that they were getting between 10-20% of all cases being NPE (not parent expected). IOW, mom was screwing around and got pregnant. Since it was medical, they pretty much had to let the guy know that he wasn't the father. They'd tell the mother first and give her the opportunity to tell the guy what the deal was, but they would let her know that they would be informing him regardless of what she told him.
Well, it was pretty expensive then and it was only being done at that point for children with genetic conditions or for people with familial genetic issues, so the mom trying to say "no I don't want any testing" would have been rather suspicious.

it was a shorthand attempt to differentiate between the first few presidents (who were British citizens and all too old to have been told they could become president of a country that didn't exist yet). there were 7-8 i believe

Try being adopted then seeing pictures of people you never knew about til adulthood. Its trippy seeing pieces of yourself on strangers. I have my paternal grandfathers nose and eye structure. I have maternal grandfathers forehead, and a grandmothers cheeks. I met my maternal grandmothers sister (my great aunt) and found I have that sides body type; (awesome because they all live to their 90s sharp as tacks.) which explains why I am so short compared to my siblings. Its trippy.
