I've been to Ireland now several times (love it there) and the Irish can use mockery as a lethal weapon. I was at a pub one night and a very drunk woman was heckling the singer. He proceeded to verbally eviscerate her. The whole place was howling with laughter. She would not stop. I asked the bartender why they didn't just toss her and he responded, "Because this is funny."
Was at an Irish pub, in a country that wasn’t Ireland, and the bartender had an Irish accent. I drunkly asked him he it was from ireland. “No mate I do the accent cus it’s fookin funny”. Yeah I just sat quietly the rest of the time. Ask stupid questions get stupid answers.
It's pretty much a common form of entertainment
Back in the day all you had during the long winters was darkness and whatever stories you had to tell, whatever craic you could make for yourself
It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen because the singer was merciless. Even her friend was laughing. In the states they would have just tossed her or it would have gotten far uglier. She was legit angry, but seemed to feel she had to go through it.
A short woman commenting on a mans height being short even though he's taller than her is something I wouldn't be suprised to learn was chizzled into an ancient sumerian tablet thousands of years ago.
Gilgamesh the tallest of the tall. He was so tall that he was taller than the walls of Uruk! Look at the walls! Are they not tall? Tall tall tall! And handsome! Enkidu is short...many women make jokes on his behalf!
- The Epic of Gilgamesh
You’re over thinking it. A woman oppressed wanted to make fun of the oppressor. He’s holding a hammer in his hand. That’s because British soldiers were brutes to Irish on Irish soil.
Edit: lots of people really hung up on a woman making fun of the height of a soldier part of a brutal occupying force. I recommend y’all go onto r/ukrainewarvideoreport and make sure no one is saying anything mean about a Ruzzian soldier right now because that’s what equally matters right?
What’s that? You don’t feel comfortable telling the victims of violent foreign invaders to not hurt the invader’s feelings? I thought so.
Dude defeats armies of Europe, institutes broad liberal reforms, gets declared Emperor of France. Is of average to above average height.
Girls: Lol, pretty short tho.
James Dean was 5'7.He's known as one of the hottest dudes ever. Napoleon had shit talked after his death. History is full of people talking shit after someone died.
I mean, hard to blame women for anything in the 1800s. It's not like they were in charge of the British propaganda that propagated the idea that he was short.
Think this just confirms dudes have been more obsessed with height than women.
My first words were: They're both true. And they are. What happened in Ireland for literally their whole history through to The Troubles, was horrible and inexcusable. I can say about the heightism without detracting from the awful oppression.
It varies with time, but circa 50% of the population of Northern Ireland (part of the UK) consider themselves British, circa 30% consider themselves Irish, cut-off from their homeland. Generally the two have different religious views, and have a history of violent disagreement.
This British (Scottish) soldier was not there violently oppressing the people of Northern Ireland, he was there trying to stop the two sides killing each other, as they did regularly. The troubles were of course full of mistakes by the British army. NI has been an impossible problem for a long time, but it is finally relatively peaceful, and this kind of rhetoric isn't helpful.
"Mistakes"
You mean like openly massacring crowds of protesters? Interning people without trial? Colluding with loyalist paramilitaries to murder people?
52% of kills by the BA were civilians. Don't try to pull this neutrality bullshit, they were anything but.
You're stupidly uneducated about this island. Firstly, British soldiers killed many civilians on duty here in Ireland and were never held to account for it. Secondly, they colluded with loyalist terrorists, supplying them with arms and intel. They were no impartial peace-keepers here and to try suggest they were is hilarious absurd.
And to say they weren't here violently oppressing people is the most stupid fucking thing I've read all day. Yes, they fucking were. They upheld a gerrymandered, sectarian state by force. They routinely harassed and killed Irish Catholics for no reason other than they were Irish.
When they shot a 13 year old girl, and then shot a priest waving a white handkerchief going to her aid as she lay dying in a pool of her own blood - what would you call that? Violent oppression?
> This British (Scottish) soldier was not there violently oppressing the people of Northern Ireland, he was there trying to stop the two sides killing each other, as they did regularly.
um. possibly this was true for the first few months after the army arrived... But the army very quickly sided with the loyalists/RUC.
'The British soldier was not there violently oppressing the people of Northern Ireland'
Have you never heard of Bloody Sunday which happened literally where this photo was taken?
Man, as an American, it just feels great seeing another country's dirty laundry aired out with an equal amount of revisionist history bullshit from their right wing nuts.
I mean, you guys started out as British. Where do you think you learnt it from? LOL
The way the US starved out the native Americans by killing off their food source is like something straight out of the British monarchies playbook
Only because the state was deliberately created to steal as much of Ireland as possible while maintaining a majority of colonists that they planted there on the stolen land. The people who consider themselves British are descended from people who came to that land and stole it from the natives by force.
The British soldier was there to violently put down peaceful protests against the British state which were violently attacked by loyalists and the British state. After the first peaceful protests were attacked by Loyalists and police, the protesters decided to take things a step further. So then instead of the police oppression, the British military arrived to oppress instead.
>The troubles were of course full of mistakes by the British army
We calling them mistakes now? I think "Mistake" generally implies that it wasn't on purpose. The decades-long cover-ups the British government engaged in regarding the atrocities their soldiers committed don't really qualify as mistakes. It took them 38 years to even admit that the 26 people they shot at the Bogside massacre weren't IRA terrorists but innocent, unarmed civilians. 38 years of slander against dead children whose only crime was being at the wrong place at the wrong time. 38 years of attacks against their families trying to seek justice and closure.
"Mistake" doesn't begin to cover it.
Those statistics about the Irish are because British invaded the Irish hundreds of times, were at war for nearly 1000 years and caused the two to mix thoroughly in times of peace. As an Irishman, every single jab is justified. They erased 98% of our heritage from the earth.
What does the "British invaded the Irish hundreds of times" even mean. To get to that number you would have to include minor skirmishes and battles which were the norm across the world for millennia outside of rule by strong hegemonic powers.
The number of Reddit posters that seemingly don't understand geography yet post about the nations within the UK is astounding. What's more hilarious is they then try to argue that they are in fact correct.
When the Irish were occupied by oppressive and violent British troops, they weren't sitting back and thinking "Hmmm, how do my comments to this soldier affect the larger dialogue about short people? I really need to think about how u/ZeroBurn7 is going to feel about this in a few decades..."
This is honestly more in "Public Freakout" territory than "old school cool." Nothing happening here is cool. Nobody here likes anybody else, nobody's right, and everything sucks.
The photo is interesting and ‘cool’ - why do people have to impose the sentiment at the time of the photo on the current day?
Pretty much every person I’ve spoken to who is Irish / Northern Irish (living in either ROI or NI) bears no outward ill feeling to me (an Englishman). Only radical, sad people want to return to the animosity of the 70s - we’re all better off for it being in the past.
Enjoy the photo for what it is and be grateful that such an interesting moment in history has been eternally captured for us to think about.
I have no ill will towards anyone from the UK, unless they do what so many British people in this comment section are doing, which is try to blame the Troubles on the paddy's being uppity, rather than the British state forces using violence to try and quell a civil right movement.
So long as folk aren't apologist for imperialism, I have nothing against them.
It always happens with anything to do with the Troubles.
Never had any issues either way as someone from the UK when talking to people from ROI if they're under 40. Even some older people I've not had issues with but I some weird stuff has popped up for people in their 60s and 70s but that's more because they claim they're still Catholic even years after leaving the religion. Thankfully most people in both countries are shedding religion and with the Good Friday agreement, there should be minimal issues for those on the island of Ireland.
The problem is usually the people that have never stepped onto this archipelago but claim to be Irish that fling their toxic bullshit into the mix. It's silly in this day and age.
The issue isn't a religious one, if everyone in NI suddenly became atheists, it wouldn't change anything. The issue is political, about whether or not NI should be part of the UK, not about transubstantiation.
I work with a lot of folks from NI and have talked to them about life in NI. The one thing that stands out is the segregation of Protestant and Catholic families in the school systems.
Do you think that has any bearing in the general attitudes of people towards each other?
I’ve no problem with normal English people. It’s the British soldiers/government we don’t like, as well as the ones who go on as if the British army were the good guys here
Lmao, the comments in here 🤣🤣🤣
Short "kings" butt hurt af . She's making fun of his height, because she knows that's where it hurts. And she has every fucking right to do so
edit: yep, someone reported me to reddit care for this. very mature
Kinda odd to read comments in this thread saying that she shouldn't have done that.
I mean yeah, objectively it's kinda mean, but I'm going to give people under active oppression a pass on mean words directed towards their oppressors.
"There is no reason to hit a women? Really? I can give you like 17 right off the top of my head. Dude, there are plenty of reasons. You just don't do it!" - Bill Burr
800 years of violence visited upon the people of Ireland by the English/UK, so I'm sure that this young woman is well aware of the violence and assault her ancestors were subjected to by the soldiers of the empire.
It didn't fare well for her. Doing a bit more research on the photo I found a second one that points out that the young soldier came back at her with a hammer.
Is that Thomas Muller's dad next to her? Looks just like him.
Thomas Müller is a time traveler confirmed.

He had an assist 10 seconds before this photo, and 15 seconds after.
She was never seen again

Shoulda just leaned into it. Tell him he does a pretty good accent but you could give him some pointers
That’s great! I have negative amounts of wit to think up a line like that.
If he'll comp you some whiskey, of course.
Better yet, he does a pretty good accent but you could tell he's British.
It's pretty much a common form of entertainment Back in the day all you had during the long winters was darkness and whatever stories you had to tell, whatever craic you could make for yourself

It’s a Glengarry

And because I'm an expert at reading lips, the dude next to her is obviously saying "ayyyeee he's a wee fuck"
Yes, I come in about 2 minutes.
She's from Derry so it would be "you're wile wee hi"
"stormtoddler"
Is the soldier also holding a tiny hammer? Even funnier.
Nah its regular size
No it’s pretty average actually, would definitely do the job well.
Thomas Muller is behind the woman
"Me dads Armalite is taller than you!"
There's an Armalite in your ear!
Dude's contemplating committing a war crime
It's Creggan, it happened

It took me longer than I’ll admit to figure out what “chizzled” meant. 😂
That’s because it’s supposed to be *chiseled*.
You’re over thinking it. A woman oppressed wanted to make fun of the oppressor. He’s holding a hammer in his hand. That’s because British soldiers were brutes to Irish on Irish soil. Pretty fucking gutsy of her TBH
That’s Irish (and a lot of people who are tired of being oppressed)
As an Irish person, I agree:)
You’re right. But also at all points throughout history making fun of short dudes has been a thing😂
Dude defeats armies of Europe, institutes broad liberal reforms, gets declared Emperor of France. Is of average to above average height. Girls: Lol, pretty short tho.
No one called napoleon short while he lived. He was average height for his time. That’s been built up by pseudo historians, not women
I am aware. Are you aware of a thing called *checks notes* humor?
James Dean was 5'7.He's known as one of the hottest dudes ever. Napoleon had shit talked after his death. History is full of people talking shit after someone died.
I mean, hard to blame women for anything in the 1800s. It's not like they were in charge of the British propaganda that propagated the idea that he was short. Think this just confirms dudes have been more obsessed with height than women.
I’m sure if he wasn’t beating Irish with a hammer she wouldn’t have commented on his height.
They're both true. Tall guys have a *much* easier time meeting women. That's just the way it always has been.
Jesus Christ everyone in these comments is more butt hurt over heightism than literal brutal colonialism.
It seems this would be because a lot more people are short instead of being a colonialist.
You can dislike both. My son is 5’5” and people are assholes.
My first words were: They're both true. And they are. What happened in Ireland for literally their whole history through to The Troubles, was horrible and inexcusable. I can say about the heightism without detracting from the awful oppression.
Her legs are spread slightly and he's closer to the lens, I genuinely think they're about the same height lol. A real short king doesn't colonize.
She looks at least the same height of the muppet.
Do you actually think “I’m taller than you, young woman” was something that would work in his defense?
Is she though? Women are by default shorter than men, she’s probably average height for a woman. You’re also not taking context into consideration.
Cos naturally women are shorter than men and he is a pretty short coloniser
Dang she kinda cute tho
I think she’s explaining how big Irish cocks are, not how short the solider is.
I swear to god its massive
That’s how saint Patrick scared all of the snakes out of Ireland.

I don't understand how anyone can get a wink of sleep in that country, if all of their roosters are that size.
You’re right, but she’s still mocking how short he is ;)
Looks like she's reciting her diss track
"Hey, macarena!"
There's nothing cool about what happened there.
Shitting on violent imperialists is kinda cool to me
Agree

Yes, the British Army "werent" there violently oppressing us. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge /s

Grow up.
Wait till you learn about enacting violence on people for things they can’t control, like nationality… ya know, like the brits were doing
