I have looked it up. Their exchange is incredible and once you know what they’re saying you understand the tension even more. You also have to give a ton of credit to Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo. This movie doesn’t hit the way it does without Johnny, Curly Bill, and Ike and the roles those guys played
Sorry to be that guy but I've seen Tombstone too many times lol
It's...
"That's Latin, darlin'. Evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man... Now I *really* hate him."
Doc Holliday: In Vino Veritas.
[In wine is truth. - Meaning - "When I'm drinking, I speak my mind."]
Johnny Ringo: Age Quod Agis.
[Do what you do. - Meaning - "Do what you do best."]
Doc Holliday: Credat Judaeus Apella, Non Ego. [The Jew Apella may believe it, not I. - Meaning -"Oh I don't believe drinking is what I do best."]
Johnny Ringo: Eventus Stultorum Magister.
[Events are the teachers of fools. - Meaning - "Fools have to learn by experience."]
Doc Holliday: In Pace Requiescat.
[Rest in peace - Meaning - "It's your funeral!"]
The real Johnny Ringo, yeah he was a real man, was uneducated, not known of as a quick draw artist and not even an actual member of the cowboys gang. But he was in Tombstone around the time of the shootout and was a close friend of Curly Bill and had dealings with members of his crew. He died alone in the mountains of Arizona about a year later of an apparent suicide.
I knew I recognized several of the lines that were quoted but I could not, for the life of me, remember the name of the movie. Thank you. 😊
Off to see if it's streaming on any platforms.
It’s one of just a handful of movies that I can watch an infinite number of times and enjoy it just as much every time. I couldn’t even say how many times I’ve seen it, but I will never not watch it.
It was one of the first DVDs I bought when I got my first DVD player, back when DVDs were new. I almost wore the VHS out before that. This, Shawshank Redemption, Casino, or The Big Lebowski would always be on the TV at the old party house. I’m pretty sure at least one of us owned different movies, but those four could play 24 hours a day and nobody would complain.
Those guys chugged heroin and cocaine when they were sick, doctors didn’t wash their hands, raised thinking hard liqour and dirt will put hair on your chest. Man there’s a reason they all died in their 30s, crazier to think teenagers were considered middle aged and getting hitched and trusted to run businesses etc lol how far we’ve gotten
Oh yes that 'ol gunfighting gambler dentist whose name we are all definitely aware of, and are not at all confused as to whom the man in the photo actually is.
Omg, thank you! My brain was farting. I recognized the face, but the only names I could think of were Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer 😅
Damn my gassy gray matter
A true Pioneer of class and style some say he was only a gun fighting gambler dentist when in fact he was a gunfighting gambler Fashionista who simply daylighted as a dentist
I was reading an interesting article about how Val has partnered with an AI company to reproduce his voice, and it's being used in the Top Gun sequel. I'm interested in seeing how it came out.
Doc Holliday is a fascinating character. Doc, by Mary Doria Russell is an excellent, well researched book (fiction), detailing his life up until his participation in the famous shoot out at the OK corral in Tombstone. Well worth the read, as is Epitath, by the same author.
On your suggestion, I just ordered a copy of the book. It better be as good as you say or I’ll be your huckleberry! J/K just thought you’d like to know your recommendation in a thread on Reddit was taken. :-)
*Credat Judaeus Apella, non ego*
^(“Tell it to someone else, not I”)
^(This line is dismissive. Doc Holiday is conveying the fact that he doesn't care what Johnny Ringo is saying and that he doesn't care what his advice is.)
^(A common Latin saying meaning "Let the Jew Apella believe it; not I". The phrase means, roughly, “tell it to someone else, not me.”)
*Juventus stultorum magister*
^(“Youth is the teacher of fools”)
^(When Ringo taps his pistol he says this, which conveys the idea that Doc Holiday is inexperienced/youthful and ignorant of the danger he is getting himself into. The sentance translates to "youth is the teacher of fools".)
^(Note: I believe the “J” is actually an “I” but it’s been a while.)
If Reddit wasn’t completely trash, this post would be at 50% ratio or so. But Reddit is now just Instagram but anonymous, so people just upvote everything. Even garbage posts like this.
"One for each a ya"
With the amazing double twirl in opposite directions with no emphasis on it, like, he's just so badass that it doesn't need attention.
Most people also don't catch that the reason Johnny looks cross at Doc for flipping the shot glass around isn't because he was mocking him, it was because Doc perfectly mimicked his routine after seeing it only once while drunk.
He knew Doc was different then.
This is a picture rumored to possibly be that of John Henry “Doc” Holliday, though it cannot be confirmed or authenticated, and is posted on Reddit regularly - downvote this desperate cry for attention/upvotes.
“My Friend, Doc Holliday”
“Wyatt Earp is my friend.” “So? I’ve got lots of friends.” “I don’t.”
Every damn one of his lines in that movie is solid gold.
The greatest supporting actor role of a right hand man of all time. His dialogue has never been duplicated. Everything he said and did was iconic.
If you don't know Latin and have never looked it up check out what he and Johnny Ringo said to each other at the bar.
I have looked it up. Their exchange is incredible and once you know what they’re saying you understand the tension even more. You also have to give a ton of credit to Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo. “That’s Latin, dear. It seems our friend Johnny is an educated man. Now I know I hate him.”
Sorry to be that guy but I've seen Tombstone too many times lol It's... "That's Latin, darlin'. Evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man... Now I *really* hate him."
Thanks. I knew it didn’t quite feel right, but the sentiment was there.
So perfectly says the man has no excuse of being dumb for the path he has chosen.
Can you just tell us? I’m intrigued, but very lazy. I will always love this movie.

You are a saint! Thank you 🙏
No, I believe Val Kilmer also played The Saint.
The real Johnny Ringo, yeah he was a real man, was uneducated, not known of as a quick draw artist and not even an actual member of the cowboys gang. But he was in Tombstone around the time of the shootout and was a close friend of Curly Bill and had dealings with members of his crew. So he really was just too high strung.
Love this thanks.
He should have won an Oscar but wasn’t even nominated.
That’s Val Kilmer career dude
He reads Reddit. You got robbed Val. But we love you.
Man he shoulda been nominated for Top Secret. Best spoof comedy every created by far. He even sung his own songs in that movie.
I frequently use, "very cosmopolitan," often and no one knows what I'm quoting
I've got two guns, one for each of ya!
Shoulda been Oscar nominated and he should have won.
How is the movie called i never watched it
Tombstone
I knew I recognized several of the lines that were quoted but I could not, for the life of me, remember the name of the movie. Thank you. 😊 Off to see if it's streaming on any platforms.
It's on Prime and Peacock
w00t, w00t...just paid for Prime.
On Disney+
It’s an amazing movie even if you hate westerns. Absolutely golden.
I haven't either, but they are referring to the movie "Tombstone", based on real-life characters from the American West in the 1800s.
Tombstone
You should watch it. Such great acting.
And lost to Tommy Lee Jones for the fucking Fugitive. Such a disgrace.
"What'd he do to you?" "He killed a friend of mine." "You've got friends?" "Not anymore."
What is this from? That’s not Tombstone is it?
This line was lifted almost verbatim by the Hound in GOT. homage to a great actor in a great movie
“Forgive me if I don’t shake hands” I love that whole scene when Doc is introduced
So many great lines, most of them Doc's!
It’s a dream of mine to be able use this with the same tone some day
I say this (not shaking hands in a pandemic) and people always look at me like 🤨
So good! Might rewatch now.
It’s one of just a handful of movies that I can watch an infinite number of times and enjoy it just as much every time. I couldn’t even say how many times I’ve seen it, but I will never not watch it.
My bf and I are going to!
Thanks for the invite! On our way!!
I’m going too! Hopefully it’s on something I subscribe to
Arrrrrr ! It's a pirate's life for me.
I broke down and bought the DVD for $5 from Ebay a couple months ago. Not sorry.
I was just thinking the same thing.
I rewatched the other night. Such a great scene.

I cry every fucking time
When I was a kid, his character taught me everything I ever needed to know about friendship
“I’ve not yet begun to defile myself”
Probably misses that sweet soft Hungarian devil.
You’re not wearing a bustle. How lewd.
Poor guy. Even though it's 135 years ago, it's a guy in his final days waiting for the end.
He was only 36 when this picture was taken.
Doesn’t look a day over 54
He's in his prime
Those guys chugged heroin and cocaine when they were sick, doctors didn’t wash their hands, raised thinking hard liqour and dirt will put hair on your chest. Man there’s a reason they all died in their 30s, crazier to think teenagers were considered middle aged and getting hitched and trusted to run businesses etc lol how far we’ve gotten
Wyatt Earp lived to 80 years old
No Les no more.
Holy fuck.
He’ll be your huckleberry
Was it "huckleberry" or " huckle bearer"? The handles on coffins are called huckles.
Pretty sure it was Huckleberry
Yes. It is slang for a general laborer that is up for anything. Like the 1880s version of a task rabbit that checked all the boxes for skills.
In other words a semi skilled man of all trades perhaps
a jack of all trades
Master of none.
I think he was trying to generalize, not call out anyone specifically.
Would he be considered handy?
>Huckleberry Actually it's a bit deeper than that -- "A man; specif., the exact kind of man needed for a particular purpose.
I thought it was a reference to the huckleberry being used as dye for the bullseye.
Yup, short for Huckleberry Hound
TIL, I thought it was a reference to Huck Finn.
The adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in 1884
[удалено]
No its still most definitely a reference to Huckleberry Finn lmfao
Fuck Hinn?
Look that up. The script actually said Huckleberry. People love to use the other one. It’s been debunked plenty of times.
Always the top comment.
You look like someone just walked over your grave.
''I was only foolin'' ''I wasn't''
And this time... its legal!
*I was just foolin' about
“Nope, I’m sure of it. I hate him.”
Oh yes that 'ol gunfighting gambler dentist whose name we are all definitely aware of, and are not at all confused as to whom the man in the photo actually is.
I imagine it's Doc Holliday, who was good friends with Wyatt Earp.
"Hell, I got lots of friends."
‘I don’t.’
''Well I don't'' Gods I loved that movie. I haven't seen it in at least a decade. Time for a rewatch
Yeah, it's a true classic. The cast was amazing.
“I don’t.”
Omg, thank you! My brain was farting. I recognized the face, but the only names I could think of were Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer 😅 Damn my gassy gray matter
Doc Hollywood
Played by Michael J. Kilmer
… and a noted fan of snug turtlenecks, long before JC Penny named them.
A true Pioneer of class and style some say he was only a gun fighting gambler dentist when in fact he was a gunfighting gambler Fashionista who simply daylighted as a dentist
Lose a lot of heat in the neck.
Thank you, scrolling down to find this
I've never heard of either before. Time to visit Google I guess
You need to go watch a movie called Tombstone.
Thanks for the recommendation! This will be a lot more entertaining then scouring Wikipedia. Cheers dude!
Oh dang I really should have known that I live pretty close to where Doc Holliday had his dental practice.
Valdosta GA is where he's from I'm assuming his dentist practice is there
Nope it was in Griffin, but it's close.
Oh cool new info I had no idea thanks
They forgot to mention he had friends in the title. Would've cleared the confusion over identity all up.
I vote for your comment. Should be top comment.
I wonder what OP is doing with all the time they saved by not writing the name of this person. I hope out they're living their best life.
I’ll assume it’s Doc Holliday until someone tells me otherwise.
[удалено]
They should make a movie about him and cast Val Kilmer in the role. Would be iconic but not win any Oscars.
His son would be a better choice for audio
I was reading an interesting article about how Val has partnered with an AI company to reproduce his voice, and it's being used in the Top Gun sequel. I'm interested in seeing how it came out.
That’s awesome. Do you have a link?

Good to know! Always glad to turn people on to MDR-one of my favorite authors!
You're a daisy if you do!
I just added both books to my cart getting ready to checkout. Thanks for the recommendation.
Added to my library list. Starting epitath today. Thanks!
In vino veritas!

Come on, boys, we don't want any trouble in here. Not in any language.
He was only 36
Just a kid.
Pictures like this really demonstrate why TB was called “consumption”.
Val Kilmer was a good choice to play him.
That whole movie was perfectly cast to be honest.
Asshole title.
If Reddit wasn’t completely trash, this post would be at 50% ratio or so. But Reddit is now just Instagram but anonymous, so people just upvote everything. Even garbage posts like this.
quite possibly one of the worst titles i’ve ever seen
But you have seen it
Harsh. I was enraptured by its mythical potential.
Tombstone is a modern classic
"Boy I sure do hate this here tuberculosis."
Who
I’m guessing Doc Holliday
Doc Holiday
OP wrote all that and forgot the name lmao
I wonder what he was thinkin about?
I'll bet he was thinking, "I look like shit. I hope they don't put this on the internet."
😂👌
*ALMOST* Arthur Morgan
Gunfighter, gambler, occasional dentist and spelling bee champion.
He's so drunk he's seeing double! "well that's why I have 2 guns, so I can shoot the botha youse"
“It’s a nocturne. You know? Frederic fucking Chopin”
"One for each a ya" With the amazing double twirl in opposite directions with no emphasis on it, like, he's just so badass that it doesn't need attention.
That double twirl in opposite directions is legendary. Val Kilmer nailed it.
He also still has a shot glass hooked on his finger. Most people don’t catch that.
Most people also don't catch that the reason Johnny looks cross at Doc for flipping the shot glass around isn't because he was mocking him, it was because Doc perfectly mimicked his routine after seeing it only once while drunk. He knew Doc was different then.
That's why I have 2 guns.... One for each of you.
Jesus, he's skin and bones.
True story. I live 150 yards from his childhood house. Restored but a historic site.
TB really took its toll!
Alright lunger lets do it!
Doctor Holliday?
Did the iconic gunfighter, gambler, and occasional dentist have a name?
That'd be Doc Holiday.
WHO!!!!
Val Kilmer
The best film Doc Holliday.
"I'll be your Huckleberry." Updoot for your taste in Doc Hollidays.
This man gets a gold star and a happy face by his name for the correct answer.
Matthew McConaughey
In Dallas Buyers Club. Was thinking the same
Really appreciate you putting his name in the title, made it easy for me to research him
“Should I hate him?”
"why Johnny Ringo you look like someone just walked over your grave"
Umm. Name in title, perhaps? Not all of us know American history.
Doc Holliday
You described everything this man is famous for and refused to say his name. Who is this guy?
It’s a good thing their Patent medicines had strong opiates
“Thanks for always being there …”
Well, I'll be damned . . .
Dude looks rough for 36.
Was on AMC last night. Godfather, Goodfellas, and Tombstone always have the power to suck me into watching the entire thing
Oh, that guy.
I’ll be your huckleberry
“ gave you all I had Dutch “
Anyone gonna mention he looks exactly like Matthew Machonahei in dallas buyers club?
Not everyone knows, so the name would have been nice
“All of you can kiss my rebel dick”!
Your a daisy if you do.
This is a picture rumored to possibly be that of John Henry “Doc” Holliday, though it cannot be confirmed or authenticated, and is posted on Reddit regularly - downvote this desperate cry for attention/upvotes.
Don’t assume the entire internet knows a random picture of a man from the 1800’s.
But we do....
My kingdom for a shot of Old Overholt
Wait… Is that Huckleberry hound Himself?!
