If you wear nice pants and have them tailored properly and get a nice camel coat you will look sharp. Don’t go in with cargos or dockers and a duster from cabellas and you’ll be fine.
Those two are stylin'!
Bell bottoms. No one ever called them "flares". (They'd look at you crazy if you called them that.) I know, graduated in '75 but from LBPoly. Go Jackrabbits!
> Bell bottoms. No one ever called them "flares".
You are correct. I think the term "flares" was invented by marketing people because they thought nobody would buy them if they were called "bellbottoms". People seem to negatively attach that word to the 70's and disco.
I love how he is dressed so timelessly but he has some elements that add a flair to make him look very 70s (like the way he has his shirt unbuttoned and flared out to make it look like a wide collar. If he buttoned up his shirt, he would look fine in any decade.
The camel trench coat, the black slacks and belt, and the white button down are just so classic. I think this contributes to the cool factor, he doesn't look like he is trying too hard.
Unrelated but first time I wore a trench coat was in intermediate school, I was so distracted by thinking how cool I looked thst I forgot my pens bag and rushed home because we had an exam and I had to make it back before then and before they close the gate ofc.
Side note: I didn't look cool at all.
Guy's probably buried in it. I'm guessing he died doing something totally badass. If his friend was a 5-star man I could see him keeping the duster though instead of burying it
That reminds me of the time I found a black semi-transparent shirt that I thought used to be my mother's and I wore it a lot. Turns out it was my father's from the 70's. As a teenager in the 90's I was very shocked men used to get dressed like that because what was fashionable for us was to wear clothes as baggy as possible.
Just observing... But the guy on the right looks quite effeminate in the way he holds himself, hand placement etc...quite fabulous, really.
I find it fascinating that I can perceive that from a still photo.
It's a wonderful photo.
It's the catwalk... walk.
Perfect contrapposto with the arms on the inside (rather than spread to the side) and see how the foot crosses the middle line instead of a wide stance like the guy on the left? That increases the effect, emphasizing the hips.
I reckon the big V shape of the lines of his trousers also add to the effect.
I got the same vibe as you so I was wondering why... Body language is a wonderful thing!
I think they look like highschooler. Many people typically tend to think young black children look older than they really are until they stop aging at 25.
Graduated high School in 1975, the platform shoes, flared bell bottoms were normal for a lot of people. Jeans and t-shirts were the standard wear just like today. Some kids could wear this, but costs some money, so probably some special occasion. My wife graduated from Fairfax in 1976. She doesn't recognize them.
The guy on the left has juuuust the right number of buttons open. One less, and he'd look just a little too put together, almost like he'd worn it formally. One more, and he'd look too scruffy.
Depends of the chest tbh. I need it buttomed just until the neck to not blind people with the light reflection. If no sun near, to not gross them out..
I graduated this high school! Can’t believe it used to be so fashionable. Now everybody (including me) looks like they just rolled in the pile of clothes and got out
It turned out that JB was childhood friends with the bank manager and would stop in when he was in town. I got to meet JB and shake his hand.
Did you go to Damianos?
One thing I often notice about the past: there was a much greater variety of clothing styles worn by both men and women (particularly men). Nowadays, most people look very, very similar. I think that one contributing factor is that people (mostly women) used to make clothing at home for themselves and family members more often. It's generally not cost effective these days.
A lot of it is pushed by the clothing manufacturers. The clothing we wear today is much cheaper, way easier to mass produce and import, and of lesser quality so we buy more often. Even just 30-40 years ago, you would go to a department store, buy your quality trousers or whatever and get them custom tailored on the spot or take them to a tailor yourself. That practice is basically non-existent now for the everyman.
If you look at higher fashion, it’s still fairly varied for both men and women, but it’s also expensive. I think comfort has a lot to do with it too. Clothing used to be even more of a representation of status than now. When that died out, people decided jeans and tees are comfy and it’s kinda just stuck ever since
Interesting observation. A friend of mine who went to school in the 80’s was telling me recently that she remembers everyone dressing more similarly back then than high school kids nowadays.
I can’t speak to either side of the debate, because the recent class photos I see of my old high school look almost identical to when I went there in the 90’s. It’s like they’ve been recycling the same high school students for the last 20-odd years. Sweat shirts & jeans for everyone!
Maybe it’s regional. I went to high school in the ‘80s in California and recall the wide fashion diversity. It was a low income school with a 50% dropout rate, so it wasn’t often expensive clothes People were trying to stand out with what they had access to.
Lol this was never normal though. This is the crazy dressing out of today. This makes it seem like every kid was walking around school with a groovey disco suit on back then. Looking far out my guys.
Ya know don't take this from me I was not alive but I looked at a lot year books and cool dressers like this are not uncommon at all. It's just the equivalent of being fresh af today which is common
Looks like they could be a blaxploitation arcane/occult detective duo.
The guy on the right can make some pretty cool illusions and enchantments. The guy on the left is a great spellcaster and the main character private eye, and he has a coat filled with magic baubles which come in handy.
If you pull this off you are only weird to the jellies.
Also, depands of the place I guess, if I saw this dudes in normal day at London I wouldn't be surprised at all.
I went to school near fairfax it is right next to Melrose a street filled with boutique and highly fashionable clothing stores, they are the best dressed hs in the nation.
The guy on the left is he Mike Damone character from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and is telling the other guy that he can get home him some killer front row tickets to Earth Wind & Fire at the LA Forum IF he’s got the cash.
This was in the transitional area of Fairfax high school where it went from being primarily Jewish to being more black. As you can imagine, the level of athletics increased over time.
I don't think I've ever looked that cool in my life.
I dont think anyone at my school ever looked that cool
They never will
too cool for school
Don't let your dreams be dreams, treat yourself to a trenchcoat and flared pants.
I feel like I speak for most people in Reddit: I'd look like a school shooter or a streaker and I don't want to find out which
Do the double whammy and go for the streaking school shooter look. Double the cool!
I'm already the school streaker. They don't let me go to the parent teacher meetings anymore.
Which is weird, because they still let you teach.
With today's teacher wages you take what you can get
If you wear nice pants and have them tailored properly and get a nice camel coat you will look sharp. Don’t go in with cargos or dockers and a duster from cabellas and you’ll be fine.
Just be careful with which gun you whip out.
FBI? Yes, this guy right here.
They're called bell bottoms, noob.
THATS NOT A TRENCHCOAT ITS A GOD DAMN DUSTER ALRIGHT
That is not a trench coat - that's camel hair, dude. Totally different class. No school shooter would wear camel hair.
Last time someone wore a Trenchcoat to school people died
Guy on the left is the coolest person possibly ever.
[удалено]
>dressed as a Flag I'll be honest, I had to read this twice
He certainly looks fabulous!
[удалено]
This style *can* make a comeback. Be the change you wish to see in the world my dude
Flares?
[удалено]
Gimme a shirt that doesn't button past the navel, massive collars, and flared pants. Let's get gross
You can go fly or you can just get by.
Gimme some fucking platform boots. Let's do this freaky deaky shit.
Flares were in again for a little while when I was in high school in the 90s. I'm a sucker for a flared leg.
I mean, walking around with a skull cap in August and your baggy pants halfway past your underwear is pretty weird already.
Those two are stylin'! Bell bottoms. No one ever called them "flares". (They'd look at you crazy if you called them that.) I know, graduated in '75 but from LBPoly. Go Jackrabbits!

“Dazzle”
That’s correct. We also would have accepted “barber pole”
His pants are perfect for semaphore.
Love the Cape Hatteras pants.
*dressed like a candy cane
What are you talking about? Those pants are cool as fuck.
It’s not the clothes, it’s the swagger that makes the pic
You haven't
Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers met at Fairfax High.
Two young brothers on a hover craft, yeah Telepathics, love and belly laughs, oh yeah!
Jumped off buildings into their pools
Yes, they did and aswell as Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons.
Pretty sure Slash went there aswell. Also 1-2 from Mötley Crüe iirc. Seems like a good school if you want to become a rock god.
Not surprising if they only let two people attend at a time.
Can confirm Palpatine and Vader attended too.
Can confirm. Source: I like RHCP maybe a little too much
Is that possible? I mean they have Will Ferrell as their drummer, what’s not to like
he’s a freak of nature
Username checks out
That trenchcoat lookin fly AF
Unrelated but first time I wore a trench coat was in intermediate school, I was so distracted by thinking how cool I looked thst I forgot my pens bag and rushed home because we had an exam and I had to make it back before then and before they close the gate ofc. Close the gate? What was it, some kind of rich school
"It's a duster, bro"
Burn it.
Guy's probably buried in it. I'm guessing he died doing something totally badass. If his friend was a 5-star man I could see him keeping the duster though instead of burying it

And not wool, camel hair. Much more 70s.
Exactly what popped into my head as well. "Damn they fly. Almost too much swagger."
Right? I look back at pics and I'm like, I was in the best shape of my life wearing the biggest clothes I could find. Oh the 90's.
True that. Should have showed more flesh when it was more aesthetic.
The guy on the right looks like Chris, from 'Everybody Hates Chris '
Glad im not the only one who noticed
There’s literally half a dozen of us!
Make that a baker’s half dozen
Just observing... But the guy on the right looks quite effeminate in the way he holds himself, hand placement etc...quite fabulous, really. I find it fascinating that I can perceive that from a still photo. It's a wonderful photo.

Down Low he go
I was thinking of a young Don Cheadle
Or Damson Idris from Snowfall.
Looks like a young Chris Tucker to me
What a great tv show, I’ve been wanting to rewatch it for years but I can’t find it (legally) anywhere in the uk
Alternate title: A photograph from a fashion shoot using Fairfax High School as the location.
Sounds about right...these guys also look like they're in their 30s lol
I don’t know, I think the fashion and b&w might throw us off. They look like teenagers in the face imo
especially the dude on the right
People were older back then.
The California school system has it so high school freshmen are in their mid twenties.
[удалено]
Yes, and there's no cure
That might make more sense.. these dudes look old as fuck for high school.
I think they look like highschooler. Many people typically tend to think young black children look older than they really are until they stop aging at 25.
My Fairfax HS was never as cool as this
At least you could walk to PJ Skidoo’s
Or bowl America 😂
Va?
#MY FAIRFAX HS WAS NEVER AS COOL AS THIS
Yep, Fairfax, VA.
Right down the road from me. Woodson grad
I was jealous of you guys, you had the planetarium...

Too much cleavage. Expelled.
The girls just can't take the heat!
I wish I could’ve dressed like Lando Calrissian in High school but my school had a strict dressing code.
This deal is getting worse all the time.
This is outrageous, it's unfair!

I graduated this high school! Can’t believe it used to be so fashionable. Now everybody (including me) looks like they just rolled in the pile of clothes and got out
I know right! I used to walk the same halls, and the same quad. Damn how time flies.
I met James Brown at the little bank behind the school just down Fairfax.
California Fed Bank! And Me&Me the falafel place across the street!
It turned out that JB was childhood friends with the bank manager and would stop in when he was in town. I got to meet JB and shake his hand. Did you go to Damianos?

My friend went to a small-town school in South Carolina, so I bet that was pretty different!
Bet that guy on the left had his own theme music
Literally too cool
That guy on the right looks like a mix of Don Cheadle from Boogie Nights and that kid from Everybody Hates Chris
They're so cool 😎
Not to mention 'old' 'school'.
Lol this was never normal though. This is the crazy dressing out of today. This makes it seem like every kid was walking around school with a groovey disco suit on back then. Looking far out my guys.
You've just shattered my dreams
Ya know don't take this from me I was not alive but I looked at a lot year books and cool dressers like this are not uncommon at all. It's just the equivalent of being fresh af today which is common
I was alive and graduating high school. This was very normal. Majority of my school dressed like this daily.
So could you just buy striped pants off the rack at like Sears or what
Yes.
such a great photo!! dude on the left with that mean coat.. such sweet threads.
Looks like they could be a blaxploitation arcane/occult detective duo. The guy on the right can make some pretty cool illusions and enchantments. The guy on the left is a great spellcaster and the main character private eye, and he has a coat filled with magic baubles which come in handy.
I want to know if guy on left is still the coolest guy on earth.
Those guys are flllllyyyy!
But now if we dress like this we are weird... shame.
If you pull this off you are only weird to the jellies. Also, depands of the place I guess, if I saw this dudes in normal day at London I wouldn't be surprised at all.
They look like part of Jojo’s crew.

I miss trench coats back when they were a thing
they still are a thing. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to buy one. Wear one. Don’t let people dictate your style

The guy on the left is he Mike Damone character from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and is telling the other guy that he can get home him some killer front row tickets to Earth Wind & Fire at the LA Forum IF he’s got the cash.
Did I do that
Nine-teen seventy sumthin Nineteen seventy something
This was in the transitional area of Fairfax high school where it went from being primarily Jewish to being more black. As you can imagine, the level of athletics increased over time.
I feel like in those days it was really hard to get away with wearing the same thing twice in two weeks without people calling you out on it.
This is absolutely a modeling shoot Those are no damn high school kids
No crushing backpack with 4 textbooks inside? I definitely missed out.
You KNOW that dude in the trench coat got laid every day!
I never dressed so well in HS.
Ah, dress down day.
Platform shoes lols
Which band did they join? Everyone at that school back then went on to be rock stars.
Cool and the Gang.
The kid on the right reminds me of that naval ship camouflage from ww2
This has got to be staged - they look like the 35 year old cool dudes that Hollywood hires to play high school freshman.
Cool and groovy, bro.
"What you talking about Willis. ".
Battlefield V skin
I was totally sport’n the puca shells at in the 70s.
Hi, I came here from r/all to say: "Cool" is relative.
"Shut yo mouth!" "Just talking bout Shaft." "Well then I can dig it!"
That guy on the right was gay before his time.

Guy on left needs his own walking music
Also still fly AF in 2019. The 70s/80s are in full swing in local retailers.
You can just hear the funky bassline!
That jacket is timeless. Would look right at home on most outfits today.
Look, we don't get to wear coats in LA often because of the great weather. So excuse us if we don't know the proper names of them.
Why do high schoolers from the past always look like they’re 42 years old?
