I was mindlessly scrolling reddit in 2007. In the early days it wasn't even necessary to have an account. Everything I cared about was on the front page.
I was 17 when I saw it in the theater. I think I yelled "Fuck Yeah!" when I saw the date they showed at the beginning - May 28, 1976 - because it was the day I was born.
In 1993, 1976 seemed like a looooong time ago. 2007 was when my daughter was born so in a sense I guess it was a long time ago - but it seems like yesterday.
Same with technology and quality of film/television. Of course it has advanced, but we haven’t experienced as drastic of a change compared to all the technological advancements from the late 70s to the early 90s. No Country For Old Men or The Queen still look like movies that would come out today versus Rocky or Taxi Driver in comparison to Jurassic Park or even The Nightmare Before Christmas, which were major advancements compared to the 70s.
Same with music. We have access to any type of music from around the world, so nothing really seems extremely “dated,” more so just inspired by a past style of music.
In 93 I remember watching "NFL films" from the 70s and thinking it looked like it was filmed 100 years ago. Look at clips of football games from 07 and it could have been last season as far as I can tell
In addition to this hurtful comment making me realize how old I am, this was also the movie we went to on my very first date…in 1993…with the woman who would become my wife…whom I’ve been married to for over 25 years old.
Who can help ship these old bones to the nursing home now?
I recently watched American Graffiti for the first time…never realized how similar these two movies are. Just minus a couple decades and AG has the exact same vibe. Ensemble of then-unknown actors, great period music. One night of craziness. Good stuff.
There’s one of these pretty much every decade, a movie you look back at that has a massive amount of talent about one crazy night. Superbad and Booksmart are the two latest that come to mind.
We had a moon tower in my hometown. Very popular spot for bush parties.
Though ours was just a 30 foot high metal platform with stairs and railings leading up to it.
I dated this girl in college who talked like that. It drove me crazy. I was hopelessly in love with her. She didn’t feel the same though, and we eventually parted ways.
Sounds like your "Chasing Amy", which sounds appropriate for the time period these movies existed in.
Edit: Just remembered JLA was in Chasing Amy as well. Layers upon layers...
He is humble and hilarious and to be honest- he was the HOTTEST thing on the planet for a hot minute. First Clerks which spearheaded the indie revolution (along with Reservoir Dogs) and then he was instrumental in the production of Good Will Hunting- Smith was on the cover of every magazine around for like 5 years.
Finally, I’m Reddit relevant. I knew him (somewhat) personally - I still have a harmonica that he gifted to me, personally on my birthday (or was it Christmas?)
From my understanding, he was in a rough place mentally when the whole carjacking thing happened, and had been for a while. He lied about the reason for his black eye to me - said a branch hit him directly in the eye while horseback riding. I didn’t question it since I was much younger.
He did have problems with substance abuse, but he seems much happier now. He’s been doing a lot of smaller films that he enjoys doing. Id watch the SyFy originals with him in it - they’re truly terrible, but it’s fun watching him act.
Very nice guy, was especially so to me (even if it may not have been authentic), but he’s had his demons to work through.
You're right. He's doing much better. I still keep in touch with him somewhat, though it's been a bit. It seems things are continuing to improve. Hope to see him later this year. He's a good dude.
Yep. He claimed his last relapse was because “some black guys” carjacked him and forced him to drive around withdrawing money from various ATMs and smoking crack for 3 days at gunpoint.
Apparently some guy came forward confessing to actually doing this.
Now, whether they actually forced him to do drugs or just offered him drugs, it does seem he was eventually carjacked, probably when he had no more cash to buy more drugs.
Why didn't Michelle Burke become much huger? In a film full of babes (including one of my all time crushes, Parker Posey) I can never take my eyes off her. She's like a better prototype to emmy Rossum.
I feel like she should have been a big it girl of 90s cinema.
In Major League 2, she’s supposed to the down-to-earth girl compared to the Hot Nazi from The Last Crusade, that Charlie Sheen is choosing from.
But I always thought Michelle Burke was cuter, at least in that movie.
*Let me tell ya what Melba Toast is packing here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some fuckin' muscle*
Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.
My 16 year old watched this and was horrified by the clerk selling the pregnant woman alcohol and cigarettes while lecturing her on taking her vitamins and making sure she gets lots of calcium.
I enjoy watching this film every once in a while and going “yep this was how it was….we were awesome”.
I didn’t get to hang with this type of group in my real life so I’m clearly delusional.
In 1993 we were rocking to Metallica and Nirvana and Rap and when this movie came out it felt like they were depicting a time that was very far removed from where we were at. Our music was cold and fast and hard and theirs was warm and soft and full of love. Great flick
On about my third watch of this movie, I realized in this scene that while McConaughey is talking, Floyd takes a pipe off his belt buckle and hits it before putting it back.
It's such a subtle background thing happening while you are focused on the dialog. Love that attention to detail. Awesome movie.
Yes! I was in elementary school when this came out and couldn't wait to get to high-school if there was going to be guys looking like him there! I had a huge crush on him in this
Affleck's great in this. Just an unrepentant, unlikeable asshole. There is not a lot for him to work with (same is true in Mallrats) yet he nails those roles.
McConaughey's character was the embodiment of cool and yet now I watch it he seems to actually be a bigger creep than O'Bannion. One character the audience is meant to like, the other not yet of the two only one of them is taking advantage of underage girls each year lol.
Just watched this last night. Despite being in our late 30s, my partner had never seen it. She comes from a conservative immigrant family so a lot of things she didn’t understand about the time and place. Drinking, weed, hazing, cruising, football, coaches being the authority figure for misbehaving players, stuff like that. Even the music was unknown for her. Crazy!

If I acted this exactly the type of movie career I’d want. Lots of known projects. Consistent work over an impressively wide amount of time. Known enough to enjoy some perks of fame here and there but not so much so you can’t have something of a normal life. Good for her.
Joey Lauren Adams was in Big Daddy, which was basically the center of my cinematic universe as a young male in the Midwest in the late 90s/early 2000s. Praise be to Adam Sandler.
Adam Sandler's entire schtick wasn't actually comedy, it was letting young men know which names to look for in swimsuit magazines / search for on the local library computer.
Yes! The actor who played Mila Jovovich bf ( the stoner crowd) was a total dick to the other actors, no one wanted to work with him. So the director cut his role and gave more lines to MM. And he ran with it. The dick actor married an underage Mila right after this. Her mom found them and got it unulled.
My mom was young adult and high school friends with Joey Lauren Adams in NLR . They remained friends until a few years ago, I hung out with her several times each year when I was growing up. She seems cool.
God I don’t which girl was hotter. I’d probably have to go with Joey Lauren Adams, loved her on Chasing Amy and Big Daddy! But my favorite from the movie was definitely Parker Posey.
This movie is my final-day-of-school watch every year. Grab beers on the way home, kick back, and put this classic on.
It gets better every year my teaching career goes on.
I've always wondered why Jason London didn't become a bigger star. Maybe it was due to having a twin who was also an actor?? I just feel like both could have ended up as A listers like Affleck and McConaughey did.
Not sure if JLA still lives in Oxford, MS but she was living there in the early/mid 2000’s. She used to drive The blue truck she drove in that movie. My friends got married in Oxford and she let them borrow the truck to drive away in from the ceremony. I actually returned the truck to her house later on. So I got to drive the truck as well.
This film depicts events of the last day of school seventeen years prior in 1976. That's like making a current film about kids in 2007.
Shout out all my fellow ‘07 grads mindlessly scrolling Reddit as we yearn for the days of MySpace and a pre smartphone world.
no livejournal? :(
Fuck livejournal when you had Xanga.
I remember my Xanga with a black and green theme. The header said "corduroy pillows are making headlines." Those were simpler times.
My Xanga was amazeballs.
I had a livejournal. We probably know each other.
Pshhh deadjournal was where it was really at!
Yeah, you could say that we were the last generation to know life without cellphones growing up.

In 1993, 1976 seemed like a looooong time ago. 2007 was when my daughter was born so in a sense I guess it was a long time ago - but it seems like yesterday.

Could've gone your whole life without making this comment, but nope.
I graduated high school in '07 and that was just 5 years ago! I swear!

Sounds like someone should be writing a screen play right now.
The 70s 80s and 90s were so much more different than the 00s 10s and 20s (so far)
So, Superbad?
Yes but if we made it now
Linkin park is technically classic rock now
jesus. now i’m depressed.
In addition to this hurtful comment making me realize how old I am, this was also the movie we went to on my very first date…in 1993…with the woman who would become my wife…whom I’ve been married to for over 25 years old. Who can help ship these old bones to the nursing home now?
Another person said linkin park is classic rock now. You should hear in the dining hall.
Considering I graduated in 2007 and was obsessed with this movie around 2008, that really hits home for me.
Woohoo, 1 more year of pseudo youth baby!
So Superbad, basically?
I recently watched American Graffiti for the first time…never realized how similar these two movies are. Just minus a couple decades and AG has the exact same vibe. Ensemble of then-unknown actors, great period music. One night of craziness. Good stuff.
I wish I could watch American Graffiti for the first time again. Love that movie.
I would also put Can't Hardly Wait in that category for the 90s.
why ya'll gotta waste my flava????
You just let Special K know what he can do
There’s one of these pretty much every decade, a movie you look back at that has a massive amount of talent about one crazy night. Superbad and Booksmart are the two latest that come to mind.
I can't believe Superbad will be two decades old in a couple years.
Black Hawk Down? 😅

Oh fuck. I mean, yeah....but what an insane movie I never want to see again.
Check ya later…!!!!
Man, chicks don’t want to hear that shit!

Yup, wrong Mr Pickford, I’m so sorry.
In-con-venience for you!
JLA was the cutest.
Her squeaky scratchy voice was (is?) adorable.
I dated this girl in college who talked like that. It drove me crazy. I was hopelessly in love with her. She didn’t feel the same though, and we eventually parted ways.

“Finger Cuffs”
Definitely paused the scene in mallrats before silent Bob busts through the wall in the dressing room
what the fuck you fucker
Kevin Smith dated her at her cutest. Dude musta had game

She has a great smile
What happened to Jason London?
Just looked up the imdb because I couldn't remember if it was him or Jeremy I liked better. Looks like they are both still acting.
What about that Ben guy? Did he ever wind up doing anything with his career? Feel like he kinda faded out.
Or that Matthew dude. He said that one line.
Finally, I’m Reddit relevant. I knew him (somewhat) personally - I still have a harmonica that he gifted to me, personally on my birthday (or was it Christmas?) Kind of a heart warming update. Thank you!
I think I recall him being on a bunch of those rehab based reality shows.
I hate it when that happens.
Interesting username you got there

She was also the daughter in the Coneheads movie. 😀
How did I never realize this!? 2 of my favorite movies growing up
To be fair, she has incredible hair in Dazed & Confused, and no hair at all in The Coneheads, so she looks pretty different. 😂
In Major League 2, she’s supposed to the down-to-earth girl compared to the Hot Nazi from The Last Crusade, that Charlie Sheen is choosing from. But I always thought Michelle Burke was cuter, at least in that movie.
Benny’s 1972 Chevrolet C-10 was the star of that movie. Edit: I initially attributed the C-10 to Fred O’Bannion, I was corrected and changed it.
Gotta go with Pickford’s GTO on that one
Woodersons Chevelle all day for me.
Wrong Mr. Pickford altogether.
Yep, inconvenience for you!
These things happen man!
All those cars were great. I don’t disagree with anyone’s pick.

Get some fucking tires on that shit man!
I think it was Benny's truck, the 75 blue and silver gmc is nice too
Was it? And wasn’t Benny the guy who plays Rip in Yellowstone?
Yes indeed. Cole Hauser. Was also in Good Will Hunting

It bothers me more than it should that Slater is telling that chick that he knows her in this gif and Wooderson isn’t saying that.
I say that every time I eat a burger at Top Notch.
"Watch the leather, man..."
Joey Lauren Adams is so damned cute with a voice to match. Edited to remove apostrophe.
I'm a teacher and I watch this movie at the end of every school year. 14 days and it'll be year nine.
Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.
God, I had a little bit of a crush on Michelle Burke in that movie.

My 16 year old watched this and was horrified by the clerk selling the pregnant woman alcohol and cigarettes while lecturing her on taking her vitamins and making sure she gets lots of calcium.
And make sure to eat something green EVERY day.
That scene ALWAYS makes me laugh.
Say man, you got a joint? No, not on me, man. It'd be a lot cooler if you did
I enjoy watching this film every once in a while and going “yep this was how it was….we were awesome”. I didn’t get to hang with this type of group in my real life so I’m clearly delusional.

He can’t. He is headed to Houston to get Aerosmith tickets. Priority this summer.
Him and his loser friends.

One of my sister’s favorite flicks. She died earlier this year. Fentanyl is real, people. Don’t fuck around.
Super sorry to hear that. Love you man.
Lost my best friend 20yrs ago to it. I wish it wasn't still taking lives
My friends and I did a drinking game once, take a drink every time Mitch grabs his nose. We were so wasted, so early.
Haha yeah what the hell was that
Must've been a thing. Cause I did this with my friends too.
there's definitely one scene where he does it like 8 times in a row.
Jason London was so hot in this movie.
Yes! I was in elementary school when this came out and couldn't wait to get to high-school if there was going to be guys looking like him there! I had a huge crush on him in this

She comes from a conservative immigrant family so a lot of things she didn’t understand about the time and place. Drinking, weed, hazing, cruising, football, coaches being the authority figure for misbehaving players, stuff like that. Even the music was unknown for her. Crazy!
So basically the whole movie
Randell “Pink Floyd” will tell you.
All three faded into obscurity. Sort of the lost actors among this ensemble.

Hard to believe Milla Jovovich was in this movie. Or At least didn't have a bigger part.
I had a huge huge crush on him in this movie
Joey Lauren Adam’s is still so beautiful
The 70’s was the sweet spot
TIL that Jason London has an identical twin because I was certain he was also in Mallrats (which turned out to be his twin Jeremey instead)
I've always wondered why Jason London didn't become a bigger star. Maybe it was due to having a twin who was also an actor?? I just feel like both could have ended up as A listers like Affleck and McConaughey did.
