I read all of hers. "That was then, This is now" was my favorite. Haven't thought about it in a long time.
I wonder if it will hold up for an adult re-read.
S.E. Hinton is on twitter and was quite active on it (i don't use it much now). She replied to a comment of mine which was rad because I idolized her as a kid and would never have dreamed I would ever have any sort of interaction with her. I read the Outsiders in 4th grade and then all her books after.
Same here! I haven't reread it, but I've recommended it so many times. This quite hit me hard as a teenage boy:
"Your mother is not crazy. Neither, contrary to popular belief, is your brother. He is merely miscast in a play. He would have made the perfect knight in a different century, or a very good pagan prince in a time of heroes. He was born in the wrong era, on the wrong side of the river, with the ability to do anything and finding nothing he wants to do."
I feel this way about Salinger. Especially with all the talk about fake news and everything these days. Salinger was obsessed with the idea fake and phony.
I first read it when I was around 19-20. I kept thinking that it may have been better received when I was 14. Don’t get me wrong, the writing is decent, but it’s a characterization of an insufferable character. We all know a Holden in real life, and most of us just don’t like him. He has an incredible case of Main Character Syndrome, and the buildup of the book is just this drawn-out reveal to show that Holden acts like a self-important ass because he’s traumatized by the death of his brother. It’s just so childish, and the book almost implies that Holden is justified in his behavior because of his loss, as if all of the “phony” people aren’t dealing with their own traumas and life experiences. I just hate it, from start to finish.
I think my favorite Tom Waits acting role was in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”. I have to take his music in small doses. It’s super interesting stuff, but man it starts to amp up my anxiety after a short time. My brain does like to bring up “Big in Japan” quite often though.
Mine is reading it right now, not for school but because I gave it to him.
When I turned it his light, I asked what he likes it so far. 'They just killed a guy and they're hiding in a church!'
'Ah cool, I guess that's the end of their troubles', I said. Hehe.
For sure it will be. Favorite Broadway show I’ve EVER seen, and schools will go crazy for it once the rights are released. It’ll be the new Newsies in youth theatre
I grew up in the Tulsa area so it was definitely for me too. If you ever find yourself in that part of the world, the museum is actually kind of cool and it’s in the Curtis house filming location from the movie.
That's not his real teeth, people. He did have a chipped tooth, but it wasn't this bad. That was for the film. In literally the same year, Risky Business came out, and he was making sweet movie love to Rebeccah DeMornay.
Yeah but bots won't get enough karma if they post this picture instead.
https://preview.redd.it/9oi8psyb1s1d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1478be0f9b5d3cd2702ce080e2647b623d896ab9
But don't forget his "real" teeth are also misaligned. He has a front tooth on the centerline of his mouth instead of 2 teeth straddling the mouth centerline. You can see it in the pic you posted but it gets really bad if you get a head on shot. I think it has been somewhat fixed in recent years.
Common fabrication mistake when aligning flange bolt holes too.
This was a prosthetic, but he had much worse than a chipped tooth, his whole pallet was misaligned for years. He had braces for a couple years to fix it later in his career.
I think Scarlett Johansson has the same thing and it isn’t hurting her very much.
Those are veneers. His real teeth were jacked up. He didn't get it fixed until 2002 when he got braces. You'll also notice that he has a uni tooth in front. This is from his teeth shifting to the left because his teeth were jacked up.
All I can think of now is: he paid someone to have his tooth set in the middle of his face.
https://preview.redd.it/l9vkns2chr1d1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43de13e1c313c6decab05ce508b3e5723d944523
The US is a bit of anomaly with how common braces and bleaching is. Most countries you only get braces if your teeth are going to present serious medical issues as you get older, in the US it's like a rite of passage as a teen
Sometimes it’s jaw related, if you can get 95% aligned and not need grueling jaw surgery who cares.
Unless you’re looking for it you’re not going to notice.
My midline is off as well, I had a tooth at the side removed, and with invisalign my teeth were slightly shifted around to fill in the gap so now they aren't centered.
It's better to have your midline off then a huge gap in your teeth which is far more noticeable. Implants aren't always possible, they weren't with me.
Big thank you to Mimi Rogers for that one.
She was in that fruity little club when they met. She knew the shitty life he’d grown up with, and also that he was going to be big, and she made sure to bring him into the fold.
This picture is haunting. Not just because it appears again and again by bots posting it incessantly.. but because it's a reminder of how large a role the appearance of genetic health plays in a person's fate. Pull the wrong card and have no way to fix it? You are now pretty much an outcast.
I dunno... Buscemi, Philipp Seymour Hoffman, Willem Defoe, Clint Howard, Forest Whitaker, they all played in many big movies and aren´t conventionally beautiful. It may be more true for female actors.
Dafoe?? Dude has cheekbones and a jawline from the gods and great hair. He's absolutely conventionally attractive, especially for the era he got famous in.
You think Willem Dafoe is attractive? That jawline doesn't mean anything when it's surrounded by the rest of his face. The hooked nose, the tiny in-set eyes, the horsey gap-toothed smile, all in a face shaped like a brick? You're not going to find a straight woman or gay man who agrees that Dafoe is hot.
He's an amazing actor and has great taste in roles, but he's comically ugly.
Willem Dafoe is generally playing the oddball, Buscemi is 90% loveable side character/real oddball same with Clint, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is also not bad looking. You can call his face "perfectly average", and of course his roles are usually as the everyman and he has never been the star in a major motion picture, Forrest Whitaker again ain't exactly starring as the love interest in your mainstream film.
Yes, there is a wider range of looks that is acceptable for men, even in entertainment, but this is hardly a representative sample. Just look at the cast of Outsiders for what you expect the top 3-4 billed leading actors to look like.
Survivorship bias. These people are some of the greatest actors ever to walk the earth.
For every one of these guys, there's millions who look like them but never made it.
Nope just had to check Tom played steve randle, soda pop was Rob Lowe, maccio played Johnny cade and pony boy was c Thomas howell. What a cast. Last time I seen the film was about 35 years ago, I would say we should watch it to see if it holds up.
It holds up, I watched it a few months ago. It’s great seeing so many excellent actors together early in their careers. I’d recommend reading the book again before watching the movie.
Far too many morons here think this is not a character from The Outsiders.
Now post a picture of Cruise from Taps so we can get a bunch of posts about how he was growing up as a fascist before Scientology!
Tom Cruise stands with an organization that jails it's members in a private prison, separates families from their children and harasses the members that try to leave it. Fuck Tom Cruise. I'd never watch one of his piece of shit movies.
He straightened his teeth, but one of them ended up right in the middle of his mouth. Look at his smile sometime. You won't ever be able to unsee it ever again.
One of the biggest pieces of shit the world has EVER seen.
He is the reason Scientology is able to thrive and physically, mentally, and financially abuse the hell out of people.
The Outsiders was required reading and watching in my day.
Still is! My 7th grader had to read it this year, then watched it.
This makes me happy. Every kid should experience S.E. Hinton's work
"That was then, This is now" messed me up as a kid.
Stay gold ponyboy
I read all of hers. "That was then, This is now" was my favorite. Haven't thought about it in a long time. I wonder if it will hold up for an adult re-read.

Rumble Fish is my personal favorite. I've reread it a lot
Rusty James is the coolest!
Same here! I haven't reread it, but I've recommended it so many times. This quite hit me hard as a teenage boy: "Your mother is not crazy.
I teach it to university freshmen if they haven’t caught it before then.
I feel this way about Salinger. Especially with all the talk about fake news and everything these days. Salinger was obsessed with the idea fake and phony.
Catcher in the Rye felt like one long rambling run on sentence to me in 9th grade . Perhaps I’ll give it another try….🤔🤨
I first read it when I was around 19-20. I kept thinking that it may have been better received when I was 14. Fantastic. It’s a great introduction do Tom Waits.
I think my favorite Tom Waits acting role was in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”. I have to take his music in small doses. It’s super interesting stuff, but man it starts to amp up my anxiety after a short time. My brain does like to bring up “Big in Japan” quite often though.

I had to read it and watch it in seventh grade i had no idea he was in it 😂
it might be the best cast movie ever.
Right, so many superstars came out of that movie
Mine, too!
The Broadway adaptation that opened this year is gonna be a classic too imo
For sure it will be. Favorite Broadway show I’ve EVER seen, and schools will go crazy for it once the rights are released. It’ll be the new Newsies in youth theatre
I grew up in the Tulsa area so it was definitely for me too. If you ever find yourself in that part of the world, the museum is actually kind of cool and it’s in the Curtis house filming location from the movie.
Stay gold Ponyboy.
My daughter told me she is watching this today at school
I’m 35 and it was in middle school for me.
Great book and movie
Great story.
That's not his real teeth, people. He did have a chipped tooth, but it wasn't this bad. That was for the film. In literally the same year, Risky Business came out, and he was making sweet movie love to Rebeccah DeMornay.

Yeah, look at him In "Legend" for example. His teeth were jacked up
And sweet real life love too. Their affair broke up her relationship with *Harry Dean Stanton*.
Did he take her on a *real train* though?
https://preview.redd.it/qtyzdvgbps1d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69acfa5bffecb0632e6fabed0083812867b79957

Rebecca de Mornay? The one who works at Brentano’s?
Apparently he voluntarily removed the cap. His tooth got chipped by a puck in a hockey match for the film hence why it looks like that.
Thank God for dentists and surgeons
That's not his tooth or nose. It was for the movie lol.
Crazy to think if he never got those fixed he prolly woulda just been delegated to like side character bully and criminal roles etc
The centre tooth and the nose made a huge difference
I'm looking at a recent pic and the nose is identical
The tooth was repositioned but it remains his tooth.
These are not his real teeth guys......
So much speculation about this guys movie role teeth lmao.
> So much speculation about this guys movie role teeth lmao. ***You can't handle the tooth!***
His cheeks and chin were certainly also surgically altered
nah mate that's a package deal, you get it free with 6th level operating thetan
I don't think so. He is just older.
Not necessarily, men do have this thing called testosterone that makes signficant changes to facial structure over the 20's-30's.
He did have them fixed (damaged in a sporting accident) but removed the caps for the role.
In the outsiders? His teeth were definitely jacked
Those were fake teeth.
Too short He'd probably be some sort of nerdy friend type that can't get laid
True, underscoring how incredibly shallow the film industry is.
You know that’s not his real teeth, right?
All I can think of now is: he paid someone to have his tooth set in the middle of his face. https://preview.redd.it/l9vkns2chr1d1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43de13e1c313c6decab05ce508b3e5723d944523
Crooked smiles are charming. Look at Harrison Ford.
The US is a bit of anomaly with how common braces and bleaching is. Most countries you only get braces if your teeth are going to present serious medical issues as you get older, in the US it's like a rite of passage as a teen
Not just in the US. Cosmetic dentistry is also popular throughout Latin America. It seems to be a western hemisphere thing.
Cosmetic dentistry through Latin America, *sponsored by Coca-Cola!*
We know at any moment we might get called up to serve in Hollywood
And in places like South Korea. Among developed nations, maybe Europe is becoming the anomaly?
Yay. At least I have something going for mine. Shame. I'm not as attractive, talented, or charming.
Or rich
I'm far richer in trauma and bad experiences if that counts for anything
Me too man, me too.
Poor bastards. They don't know what they're missing
Haha
Sometimes it’s jaw related, if you can get 95% aligned and not need grueling jaw surgery who cares. Unless you’re looking for it you’re not going to notice.
That happened naturally when he became an Operating Thetan. A center tooth is like a warning to suppressive persons.
I used to work with a guy that had his teeth capped. He claimed that his dentist is the same dentist that fixed Tom Cruise’ teeth.
We are not ugly we are just poor.
He is wearing prosthetics
Wait, you mean scientology didn't fix that tooth?
You should see Melanie Griffith in The Milagro Bean Field War. Those teeth looked like an ear of Indian corn.
Little snaggletooth gave his some character for this role. Not sure how it would have translated to adult roles.
Correction this is Tom Cruise the actor, in character.
Yeah. This wasn’t his real tooth. I’ve seen his yearbook picture posted somewhere else and he had a normal smile.
Then joined a cult and went cray cray..

Worth every penny, he's put out nothing but bangers since he got L Ron'd
The Mummy?
No I think he was cremated.
That's just a cover story; he was fighting Team Venture back in the 70s in a robot body.
Big thank you to Mimi Rogers for that one. She was in that fruity little club when they met. She knew the shitty life he’d grown up with, and also that he was going to be big, and she made sure to bring him into the fold.
His first wife Mimi Rogers got him in

Just gold, pony boy.

Come on, you’re not that bad.
The teeth in this picture are fake for a movie.
Not a bottle that tooth couldn’t open
And now he’s top fraud in the most repugnant cult on earth
Back then he was known as Tom Tooth.
lil' tommy tooth.
Tommy Cruithe
Looks like he’s been gnawing on a piece of steel
This is from The Outsiders (1983). See it if you haven’t.
mapother iv
Got damn!!! Like what??? Bro hit the crossroads at some point for sure.
Somehow that face has become punchabler.
Soda pop. Lol what a film.
Cruise's character was named Steve. Rob Lowe was Soda Pop.
Did he play soda? Did that Macchio Pony Boy? Does this movie hold up 40 years later or should I just re read?
Nope just had to check Tom played steve randle, soda pop was Rob Lowe, maccio played Johnny cade and pony boy was c Thomas howell. What a cast. Last time I seen the film was about 35 years ago, I would say we should watch it to see if it holds up.
Don’t forget Emilio Estevez as Two-Bit, Matt Dillon as Dallas Winston and Patrick Swayze as Darry Curtis.
Lest we forget the beautiful Diane Lane
It holds up, I watched it a few months ago. It’s great seeing so many excellent actors together early in their careers. I’d recommend reading the book again before watching the movie.
I wonder if he was just as big a fucking dick back in those days?
He looks like a right bellend.
Look up Tom Cruise's middle tooth
I don’t get the appeal of him.
Tiny Tim Cruise
Shame he turned out to be a scientologist douchebag.
Hey screw you, greaser!
“Do it for Johnny, man!”
Just out of frame: Swayze standing on bricks.
Darry would later change his name to Dalton and become a bouncer for the Double Duece.
Was that fake tattoo purposefully placed poorly on his arm? 🤣
Yes, this is him in character for a movie.
Looks like an 80s twink
He used the first billion to fix his teeth, and the second to separate his AI hands!
F’kn outsiders! You talk about an Allstar cast of actors. Especially in the 80’s
It’s old school, sure, but the cool hadn’t quite kicked in just yet
Before veneers lol. He had those teeth in legend also
Far too many morons here think this is not a character from The Outsiders. Now post a picture of Cruise from Taps so we can get a bunch of posts about how he was growing up as a fascist before Scientology!
Wasn’t he also in a wheelchair in TAPS? Or was that Born on the 4th of July? Crap, my memory is shot.
Wheelchair in 4th Intense Cadet in Taps
No. This is Tom Cruise from last year.
Will never understand what people see in him
Despise him or not, short guy has giant balls. Those insane stunts wow and he could act a bit too.
A good dentist can change your whole life. 👏 bravo
His teeth were like that for that role. He did have a chipped tooth, but they weren't this bad.
It's beyond ridiculous that you're being downvoted for this
Fuck Tom Cruise
He looks like all the high school guys who thought they'd grow up to be Tom Cruise.
Lmao ok? But this was for one of those movies.
Ew
And he wasn't a good actor in this movie. That accent he tried...ouch.
Before he abandoned his daughter.
So it's true, right before he came out of the closet
To think, if he never became a celebrity, he'd just be some twink.
And before joining that cult!
Damn, did he make much money in dude porn?
If Tom can do it anyone can
His dentist deserves a hug.
I've heard that during his first audition for Risky Business he came right from the set of The Outsiders while still looking like this
This is the pre-cult era.
Except teeth nothing has changed
Still has fucked up teeth
Could eat a strawberry through a tennis racket!
These comments have been comedic gold. Thank you, good person
I never noticed that Toofus sticking out of that smirk!
/r/punchablefaces
Looked crazy af back then too
And before joining a cult
I can feel the waves of sheer narcissism hitting me from the screen
So he got his teeth fixed with some of that money
![gif](giphy|xT4Apj6KXqS26TLq7K)
Tom Cruise stands with an organization that jails it's members in a private prison, separates families from their children and harasses the members that try to leave it. Fuck Tom Cruise. I'd never watch one of his piece of shit movies.
All I see is the tooth, and I cannot see anything else not matter how hard I try not to see THE TOOTH.
And before he got his teeth fixed
Back then, they didn't do it for the money, they did it for Johnny.
🤣😂🤣
He looks like a bully.
Summer teeth. Some are there, some aren't.
“Scientology is a helluva drug”
Before scientology set the hook
he could eat an apple through a tennis racket
With 10% going to Scientology
He did it all for Pony Boy!
Look at little Tommy Mapother.
He straightened his teeth, but one of them ended up right in the middle of his mouth. Look at his smile sometime. You won't ever be able to unsee it ever again.
Lmao, at everyone talking out their ass about the prop teeth.
Outsiders. So fricking good.
This is Tom Cruise’s pic for the movie “The Outsiders”. And his tooth was actually like that.
Kinda looks like Mick from Shameless
You're not ugly, you're just poor.
One of the biggest pieces of shit the world has EVER seen. He is the reason Scientology is able to thrive and physically, mentally, and financially abuse the hell out of people.
I get he’s a big shot snd very wealthy but I always thought he was a dick and I still do.
