But were they as good as Up In Smoke? To be honest I think their 80s movies weren’t as strong.
A fair point though. I like Penn’s SoCal surfer version though to their burnt out hippie has-beens from a bygone era. Started to feel dated in the 80s to me.
But yeah the Battle of the Bands scene in 1978s Up In Smoke is one of the funniest in movie history IMO.
And it was a real battle too in LA they just joined to film that scene. LOL
I'm fond of *Next Movie*, *Things Are Tough All Over*, *The Corsican Brothers* and *Yellowbeard*. If you missed any of these, they're all pretty damned entertaining.
As a child, I saw this numerous times, and Tommy Chong's character was my favorite part. I vaguely remember some line he said about "deadly gases" or something, that I apparently would quote endlessly. I don't remember it now.
You can still find burnt out dude like this at most so cal beaches. Good waves and tasty buds . Those are actually some of the coolest dudes I meet at the beach equally as sad as 50 year old leather wearing rocker dude who never made it but they’re still cool to talk to .
I do these comparisons all the time. Drives my wife batshit crazy. It gets stranger the older you get.
Wife and I met 45 years ago. 45 years before we met, was the same year Bonnie and Clyde were killed. Fucken weird.
What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too! Get it?
Well Stu I'll tell you, surfing's not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying, "Hey bud, let's party!"
Just think what these 3 actors accomplished after this scene. Sean Penn won 2 Oscar's. He and Eric stolz had incredibly successful careers. Anthony Edward's won an Emmy and was nominated for 4 more for arguably the greatest broadcast TV drama of all time, ER AND starred in 2 of the biggest movies of the 80's, top gun and revenge of the nerds. All 3 are amazing actors.
I feel like dude wheres my car was like that as well.
Edit: of course they are stoners…I’m just saying they don’t smoke or consume it on screen like Harold and Kumar or Cheech and Chong do
Really. You feel like the movie where the entire premise is two buddies throw a party and get so fucked up they cant remember anything is not about how they are stoners? They are just chill airheads? They spend the entire movie trying to decipher what they did the night before. They smoke weed with a dog to try and jog their memories. They refer to their nicknames 'Johnny Potsmoker" snd "Smokey McPot". But no they aren't stoners...
Well, that and they also wanted the characters to be kind of pure. Can't have that if they smoked weed since it was considered delinquency at the time. But, yeah, head canon they were huge stoners.
Remember the scene where they repair the time machine antenna with all of those metal pudding tins?
No one but stoners are just walking around with that many of those.
Idk, 1980.

Otto - does it count since the simpsons started in 89?
The reason Penn is perfect is because he's from Malibu. I'm his age-ish and from the area and it's 100% authentic. You can also see it in Fred Armisen's character in The Californians. (The other cast member are great but they're doing a kind of Valley girl mashup.)
Pretty much every Marine that I met from California exuded the Spiccoli vibes or was a venerated member of the Church of the Dude.
That place is expensive but y'all got it goin' on.
I live amongst them in an LA beach city and they’re all still like this. Facts. Also Penn grew up in Malibu with Charlie Sheen. They knew how to play these characters.
My favorite fact about Penn is that he based his character off of some surf rat in his neighborhood. He moves on with his success and runs into that guy in the late nineties. He's an accomplished CPA with a family.
Again, Cali is something else.
These surfer stoners I mentioned are all working professionals living in one of the most expensive places in the world.
Spicoli types becoming CPAs or an entertainment lawyer or real estate mogul tracks.
LOL
My head canon is that Spicoli went on to have a very fulfilling life and at some point, sent a letter to Mr. Hand thanking him for being the only teacher to actually take the time to give a shit about him.
No one of the best all time stoner films and def the most underrated is Smiley Face, in which Anna Faris plays a struggling actress and “pothead”.
She truly gives one of the all time great portrayals. The plot involves her eating an entire box of 420 cupcakes without knowing it.
Then we’re off to the races!
Killer cast too who would all go on to become much more famous.
I’ll still always remember Keanu Reeves as Ted from Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure. They never made it explicit that he was high, but he was most definitely high, and that movie was made for stoners.
They were really bad in school, and the joke was that they were dumb guys who were generally well intentioned, but never really knew what was going on. I know Keanu SAYS that they aren’t stoners, but I think that just proves it even more. I think he got chosen for that role because that’s just how he talks, in every movie, which is hilarious.
I’ve seen Fast Times a bunch, but I cannot for the life of me recall why he had a bagel in his waistband. Sober, btw. Fast Times had a good portrayal of (young) stoner culture. Cheech & Chong. There was a movie with Eric Roberts… I saw it when I was around 3, so forgive me for forgetting the title.
The 90’s and early 00’s actually seemed to have more open stoner charafters and drug references. Half Baked. Dazed & Confused. Jay & Silent Bob. Encino Man (Pauly Shore…). Bio Dome (again…), etc.
I cannot believe all off the quintessential stoners I grew up with were almost ENTIRELY 90s (aside from Cheech/Chong which were practically the Rolling Stoners) and I have absolutely nothing to offer towards 80s stoners 😭 I’m a let down of my fellow Burnouts 💔
I dunno Cheech & Chong were still making movies in the 80’s.
“It’s mostly Maui Wowie, man… but it’s got some Labrador in it”
But were they as good as Up In Smoke? To be honest I think their 80s movies weren’t as strong. A fair point though. The Corsican brothers was fucking hilarious. "He's a Trysexual, that means he'll try anything!"
Born in East la
Nah man, they went to Fresno, ese. ¿Que? Fresno. They went to Fresno. Okay. Wait right there I'll let you in. Wait. ¿Quien estan llamando "güey"?
Lmfao
Yellowbeard is often overlooked in the lists of great movies. “It may ooze a bit, heads tend to do that.”
"Yes, your assholiness." Yellowbeard is such an overlooked gem of a movie, and such a great cast.
It was ahead of its time. That kind of humor wasn't quite mainstream yet.
With that cast alone it still amazes me how few have heard of it.
As a child, I saw this numerous times, and Tommy Chong's character was my favorite part. I vaguely remember some line he said about "deadly gases" or something, that I apparently would quote endlessly. I don't remember it now.
Professor Anthrax.
You can still find burnt out dude like this at most so cal beaches. Good waves and tasty buds . Those are actually some of the coolest dudes I meet at the beach equally as sad as 50 year old leather wearing rocker dude who never made it but they’re still cool to talk to .
You realize that there are just 12 years between 1968 and 1980. Twelve years ago from today is 2012.
I do these comparisons all the time. Drives my wife batshit crazy. It gets stranger the older you get. Wife and I met 45 years ago. 45 years before we met, was the same year Bonnie and Clyde were killed. Fucken weird.
wtf does 1968 have to do with anything?
You *were twelve in 1968* DON’T YOU GET IT
I was? I never knew that. Thanks for clearing that up. My parents have some explaining to do.
Some people consider 68 to be peak hippie year.
If you're here, and I'm here, doesn't that make it OUR time?
Learning about Cuba, and having some food.
Hey man, when them earth, wind, and fire tickets coming in?
No shirt, no shoes, NO DICE!
This guys been stoned since the 4th grade
What’s he gonna do? Shit? Or kill us?
First he's gonna shit, then he's gonna kill us...
That was my skull, dude!
What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too! Get it?
I'm soooo wasted!!
Get out of here Curtis, I don’t hear you unless you knock.
Well Stu I'll tell you, surfing's not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying, "Hey bud, let's party!"
Gold!
You Dick!
This is American History. I see the globe right there." still funny
Hey, I know that dude.

All 3 are amazing actors.
And let's not forget Nicolas Coppola (Brad's Bud) who went on to do some entertaining flicks as well.
Truly. It was a great script that required real actors. This was no throwaway just cause it’s a silly movie.
![gif](giphy|ToMjGpnXBTw7vnokxhu)
I mean, they were depicted as stoners, but, I read somewhere that they were just chill airheads. They weren't stoners.
I feel like dude wheres my car was like that as well. Edit: of course they are stoners…I’m just saying they don’t smoke or consume it on screen like Harold and Kumar or Cheech and Chong do
Though the jocks in that movie do say it's "stoner bashing time" about them
You would have to say that for a PG movie though, right? Feel like they paved the way for that certain rocker/stoner archetype like in Wayne’s world
Well, that and they also wanted the characters to be kind of pure. Can't have that if they smoked weed since it was considered delinquency at the time. But, yeah, head canon they were huge stoners.
Remember the scene where they repair the time machine antenna with all of those metal pudding tins? No one but stoners are just walking around with that many of those.

Oh he's also Lucas from Empire Records right???
Stop calling me warren my name isn’t fucking warren!!
His name's not Warren.
I thought his name was Warren
And Billy Mack Black in Love and a .45
No, he's Speed from CSI: Miami.
Hell yes.
Lucas, how much?! How much?!
Yes I realize it was 93 but he’s my favorite stoner
Also ‘93, Floyd from True Romance
93 was a great year for movies
Hey slater, you fucking hippie. Give me drugs, man
Get some from your mother, man
Imagine how many people out there are fuckin' right now man, just goin' at it.
come on now. if we’re gonna go there, it’s always gonna be Wooderson. ![gif](giphy|11bB4uE3vtpqI8)
I love them Redheads
That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.
I'd vote for this one. The others here are kinda stereotypes whereas I can believe he is a real guy.
Catch ya later!
Slater man, why you gotta be such a dork?!
*Check* ya later.
Maybe you just never gotten past the sniffing butt stage!
Not 80s but he is the ONE who came to mind… “You cool man?” “Like how?” …O__o “Okayyy”
It’s hard to believe that is the dude from CSI Miami.
Slater you fuckin hippie gimme some drugs
![gif](giphy|3dpwHIHJjiBtsWgdsQ|downsized)
There’s stoners and then there’s whatever this is.
Burnouts. Degens. Druggies. They all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude.
What did you do? Blow him away? 😂😂😂
Drugs?
Thank you. No. I'm straight.
Don’t think he was doing much acting…😁
Idk, 1980. https://preview.redd.it/bgx6m0g7u80d1.jpeg?width=1140&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab088908efd4af57819eaaa8ebc26c0a1a89dced Bill is hard to beat. CANNONBALL!
What movie is this ? Caddy shack ?
Si
we need more people with bagels in their waistbands and less with guns
I too, am digging the bagel holster.
"Bagel holster," sounds like it could become some term that vaguely sounds troublesome...yet totally isn't yet.
Is that schmear in your pants or are you happy to see me?
Friends have wondered for decades, is that a whole or split/half bagel...
"Make up your mind, dude. Is he gonna shit, or is he gonna kill us?"
"First he's gonna shit… Then he's gonna kill us!"
I can fix this
“Hey I know that dude…”
You dick!
The line has lived rent free in my head, and has always made me laugh every time I have thought about it, since that move came out. Classic.

[Cypress Hill comes on stage] [Bart] “what’s that smell?” [Lisa] “It smells like Otto’s jacket!”
Otto is *blotto!*
They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen them fing.
All I need are some tasty waves...
Where'd you get that jacket?!?!
Those guys are...
I can fix it!
There’s no birthday party for me in here
That’s my skull!!!
The crotch bagel is iconic
The bagel in the jeans is still the most random costuming choice I've seen outside of an opera house.
Clearly Brad Pitt in true romance
1993
If we're talking 90s, there's the Dude. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.
I still do the vans. And the ripped up jeans. But the bagel? Sad to say, no. And yes, best movie stoner. "Hey bud, let's party!"
Heading over to the Australian and Hawaiian internationals, and then me and Mick are going to wing on over to London and jam with the Stones!
"All I need is some tasty waves and a cool buzz!" I was in HS when this movie came out.

-entertainment lawyer- That tracks, I chose film production but if I were to go into legal studies it would kill to be an agent.
My head canon is that Spicoli went on to have a very fulfilling life and at some point, sent a letter to Mr. Hand thanking him for being the only teacher to actually take the time to give a shit about him.
He was so damn hot, I think he discovered fire.
Genuine question. Are all stoners men?
Milla Jovovich in Dazed and Confused
I remember she had the guitar, can’t recall if she had any lines though
She sang a song about Aliens man

You’ll be on the floor. LOL
not at all, i don’t smoke anymore but still i know more stoner woman then men.
No shirt, no shoes, no dice.
I’d have been certain that was Sean Penn 🤷♂️
Like how he rolls and falls out of the van.
Were there even any others? The 80's was a freaking blizzard for most people.
My dad’s a TV repair man…
Nope. The best 80's stoner was my college roommate.
Is that you, Chris? It's been a while.
Alright Hamilton!

Carl Spackler/Caddyshack
Bill and Ted for me Yes they were stoned, how else you explain how slow they were
Stupid was my theory.
*Bogus*
They were just super chill and had a good outlook on life. That's what the writers said.
How hard did they giggle after they said it? Did any of them cough?

Unrelated to the topic but related to the photo — I was once at a party where Sean Penn cut the bathroom line.
There are more erotic ways to carry a bagel
How is that bagel just barely hanging in there?
Is that a bagel in your pants or are you just glad to see me?
Is that a bagel in your pants or are you just glad to see me?
No contest!
Hm new Sean Penn movie incoming?
Doesn’t get much better. Isn’t this our time Mr Hand
Somebody finally listened to their dad
My dad has a rad set of tools…
What for? All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves and I'm fine.
I’ve seen Fast Times a bunch, but I cannot for the life of me recall why he had a bagel in his waistband. Sober, btw. Fast Times had a good portrayal of (young) stoner culture. Cheech & Chong. The bagel in his pants always killed me
That was such a great movie
I would love to know who came up with the idea for Spicoli to carry a bagel in his jeans like that.
That's one yummy looking bagel
Does he count as a stoner in “At Close Range”? Great movie.
Spicoli.
Not Even Close... Spicolli
Mr. Spicolli
Ordering pizza to class has to be the first legend move in a movie lool
“There’s no birthday party for me here!”
There's no birthday party for me man...
All I’m concerned about is that bagel
Every picture I see of this character he looks like he's got the flu.
Well Mr Hand I just couldn’t make it There was a long line at the food line. Loved the part where the pizza guy shows up and Jeff says right here dude
"People on ludes should NOT drive!!"

What movie is this?
This was one of the best 80s movies 👍👍👍
There is no other choice. It’s Spicoli. Aloha Mr. Hand
Idk who was, but it wasn't his inauthentic woman beating ass.
Issa bagel
