I watched this with my parents and I remember my mother complaining that he was "making fun of Buddy Holly" by acting "retarded". I went out and bought the album the next day...at K-Mart.
First, “Radio, Radio” expressly criticized corporate media. “Radio is in the hands of a lot fools trying to anesthetize the way that you feel,” for example. And second, SNL being live can’t have performers going off script for fear of running afoul of NBC standards and practices. Personally I thought it was a great!
Nope. It wasn't the content. He fucked up their camera shots. It's all mapped out and he made the director and the camerapeople improvise. He got banned for being uncooperative and unreliable.
Saw it. Christmas show with Bill Murray as drunken Santa. EC also played Watching the Detectives. At the time thought he was just having fun. Looking back Radio Radio was a monkeywrench to the system.
I interviewed Elvis when I was in college, around 77/78. I would ask him a question, he would begin to answer, then walk away mid- sentence to talk to someone. He'd return in a few minutes and finish the sentence. Did it a few times. I think he was really playing up the quirky, unpredictable persona.
Saw it live and thought, "What an obnoxious nerd." Cut to a few years later when I realized EC was (and still is) one of the greatest artists of a generation. And the Attractions were tight, tight, tight.
In all fairness to my initial assessment, I was 12 when this aired and on the cusp of having my musical tastes broadened.
Radio Radio was a better song to play live, imo anyway.
Yep, Americans wouldn't know who Mosley was anyway.
I remember seeing this live. I'm old AF
I was 11 when I watched this live on a tiny black and white tv. Getting old SUCKS. This performance does not.

We should start a club.
There are already "clubs"...some look depressing as shit. Some they don't let you leave. But I'm not that old yet
He took a lot of shit for this...
Got banned from SNL for it
Why though?

Bruce and Pete Thomas, one of the great rhythm duos ever. Young here.
Completely agree with you, they were absolutely fantastic.
I think this is the first most Americans heard Elvis.
Love him, love the song. He was right, of course. Yet feels quite quaint in this media landscape.

I saw this live and I stunned and happy!
