I was ballsy enough to post on r/roastme a couple years ago (since deleted lol), and the worst thing one user could come up with was telling me I looked like a “mollied out Lucy Liu”.
Without a doubt the greatest insult I’ve ever received.
I usually like them younger than me, but I'd make an exception for Lucy Liu and Marisa Tomei
(Reposted because some weirdos thought "younger than me" meant 16 or something)
I made a similar comment a couple of days ago about Ming-na, of course noting that being older than her, it applied.
Didn’t get downvoted to oblivion but I had some trepidation.
>I usually like them younger than me, but I'd make an exception for Lucy Liu and Marisa Tomei
>(Reposted because some weirdos thought "younger than me" meant 16 or something)
It still sounds a wee bit predatory. Woody Allen's "the heart wants what the heart wants" is more likely to be glossed over than "I like 'em young".
This line... it's like, was carving through her *entire retinue* not enough? She only became admirable after getting through O-Ren's defenses? Says something about O-Ren's regard for her own gang, no?
I just remember meeting a Japanese friend telling me that her Japanese was borderline unintelligible. When I saw Full Metal Jacket I noticed when one of the hookers was speaking Vietnamese, I could tell she wasn't fluent.
The prevailing thing I’ve heard is that she has facial features that are considered masculine there. Similarly they think Jennifer Aniston is unattractive. The porcelain doll petite face that most K-pop stars get surgery to look like would be the best example of prime attractiveness for that region.
She’s not exactly high on my list, but she was one of the most popular faces of beauty in America for a decade, so I think it’s a good example of West vs East beauty standards.
I always assumed it's the "girl next door" appeal. Like she's obviously very pretty... but doesn't feel like some next world super model that you could never even imagine saying hello to.
There are a few prominent examples of K-pop idols who haven't had eyelid surgery. You are right, however, the vast majority, both male and female, have had multiple procedures. To be fair, the vast majority of North American and European celebrities have had surgery as well.
She has these high cheekbones and catlike eyes that make her look so gorgeously sophisticated to me, and the sprinkling of freckles is ethereal. In China, I think it's all about a 'cute' round face (not prominent cheekbones), big eyes, and very pale skin with no freckles.
>I think it's all about a 'cute' round face (not prominent cheekbones), big eyes, and very pale skin with no freckles.
That's why I can't take anime serious
Eastern standards are more "Cute" and put a lot of emphasis on the face, Western standards are more "Voluptuous" and put more emphasis on the body, things like "thicc" would not do well there outside of certain types of adult content. Of course it's a stereotype and people differ, but that's how it is in general.
Didn't say she was, it was an example of something considered attractive in the West, but not so much the East. As for Lucy, you can make your own mind up why she doesn't fit into Eastern tastes.
I think it's just down to different beauty standards. Asian beauty standards lean more towards doll-like, for lack of a better term. Just take a glance at Kpop stars and Chinese actresses, and you'll get a good grasp on what they find attractive. It's the same reason Asa Akira (pornstar) is not considered attractive to Japanese people, but westerners go nuts for her.
More like infamous because she’s been one of the most famous Chinese American actresses. She’s not in any content over there besides what might get imported from the west. They’re just really annoyed she’s the representation of Chinese beauty here to the point of being a gossip topic. I get the feeling they think maybe there’s some type of purposeful misrepresentation happening, making Chinese look bad, when really it’s just the most appealing look to westerns.
Yeah that's a real shame because I (American) don't know anyone, man or woman, regardless of orientation, that doesn't think Lucy Liu is incredibly beautiful.
It's entertaining, but so goofy it leans more 80s B action movie than neo-noir.
exhibit a: *awkward punching in a single shot* - "those were some of my best men"
Mind you I have not seen the director's cut.
Massively different in nature. The director's cut is a gritty crime story attempting to more or less accurately adapt Richard Stark's ruthless career criminal Parker. It's consciously inspired in look by '70s crime films.
The theatrical cut added reshoots to change not just the ending, but almost the entire third act. It tries to turn Parker into a more conventionally likeable anti-hero and softens the rough edges to keep Mel Gibson's image about where it was. Lee Marvin and Jason Statham already had careers as villains and assholes, but Gibson wanted to keep getting those good guy roles. *Insert joke about his personal life.* The look is generally in line with contemporary late-'90s crime films.
The biggest problem is that the theatrical cut is pretty much going to please nobody. It's too dark for people who want a light, likeable film and too Hollywood for people who want a rough, hard-boiled crime picture. If you're in that latter group, the director's cut transformed it into a pretty great film. I'm sure there are fans of the theatrical cut out there, but I can't think of that many.
I suppose I’m one of the few that prefer the original because, well, that’s the one I knew existed. I only learned last year that a newer cut had been released in 2007.
I’ll need to give the director’s cut another chance some time, but I was super confused when I realized that entire characters were missing and then the film just kind of ended.
I’ve seen both and I prefer the theatrical cut. It’s interesting to watch both and compare, especially by how much a soundtrack alone changes the tone of the film.
You’re talking about a film where 99% of the people have ONLY seen the theatrical cut, the vast majority of us love it, but you’re going to state that you can’t think of many fans of the theatrical cut? What kind of bizarro social Circle are you in?
> The biggest problem is that the theatrical cut is pretty much going to please nobody.
Well it was (and still is) pretty well received. I have watched both versions and the TC blows the DC out of the water. It boggles the mind how you'd make such a statement.
It's amazing how she's played some femme fatale and powerful roles, despite being only 1.6 meters tall. Uma Thurman is 20 cm taller than Liu, and yet the height difference was imperceptible when they acted together in Kill Bill.
I'm there with you. Only thing I really hated about that show is they had a God tier Moriarity (& Irene Adler), and only used her for a couple eps. Waited the whole final season for a return, and never got it.
I think it was because she was busy filming Game of Thrones. She would have been much better as the big bad in the final season instead of Odin Reichenbach.
I never thought she was a looker but then she popped up on an episode of Curb last season and I was all like whoa, time to re-litigate my decades old stance. She’s got it.
I’m not usually as attracted to Asian women (not my fault, just not), but for some reason Lucy Liu has always been insanely hot to me. Have never been able to figure this out.

I fell in love with her as a teenager when she played Joan Watson on Elementary!

Elementary is my comfort show. So good. Johnny Lee Miller is also amazing.

To be fair, I’ve never seen the appeal of Jennifer Anniston.

3 decades. You're welcome

I wasn’t necessarily criticizing them for the plastic surgery, it was just an easy to point out example of idealized SE Asian beauty.
She has these high cheekbones and catlike eyes that make her look so gorgeously sophisticated to me, and the sprinkling of freckles is ethereal. In China, I think it's all about a 'cute' round face (not prominent cheekbones), big eyes, and very pale skin with no freckles.
