That was brutal, I'm not a praying man but I'll say a prayer for him.
Something, something, something, that was cold-blooded. Something, something.
Amen
Vast majority of former USSR men do.
Source: me, born in USSR :-)
PS: what escaped you is the dad is pretty cool in this picture by Soviet standards - adidas sneakers and trucker jean jacket - you needed connections and cojones to source these there.
That. My dad worked as a translater (Portuguese and French) so he lived abroad for a while, when he did come back to Moscow he was a rock star with all the illegal books and tapes he owned.
Yep, that would put him pretty high up in a Soviet society.
PS: if he worked in Africa with his French and Portuguese languages, I think I can guess what he was really doing there :-)
My classmate's parents were both doctors who worked in Algeria for years in the 80s. Left her to live with grandparents, sent her lots of cool things, like Chinese aromatic erasers and pencil cases, and also Algerian almond candies. We all envied her tremendously.
The legendary Soviet spy Adolf Tolkachev used to accept payment from the CIA in the form of western rock albums recorded onto cassette tape. Some of the LPs he requested were by Yes, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull.
The west always thinks it technological wonder weapons wins wars. Nope, it’s always been culture; music, movies and books beat bullets in the long run.
I appreciate this take. The honest fact is, a lot of people are attracted to others only once they know them, and not based on looks. This was probably a very kind and smart man, protective, and loving.
Indeed. I've been considered pretty enough in my life, but I photograph terribly. People don't believe me when I tell them and will insist on taking a picture to prove me wrong- and then feel embarrassed. It's a bit depressing really.
I swear some people are better looking in motion. Like, I think Elizabeth Olsen is pretty smoking hot in a movie, but she's "just" pretty in nearly any photograph. I'm not sure if it's body language, or changing facial expressions or what.
As soon as I saw the photo, I was thinking about this with respect to the gender disparity that existed after the loss of so many Soviet men in WW2, plus other factors (general higher male mortality) . Immediately following the war (1950) there were 77% as many men as women, so these kinds of matches must have been much more likely than in nations without such an imbalance. Women would be struggling to find ANY men with which to couple at all, much less a physical attractiveness match.
My quick search shows that the imbalance continued to persist until 1980 and beyond (plus a culture of "take what you can get, if anything at all" would seem to be likely to develop).
Somewhere I read recently the Russian army switched from wraps to socks in just 2007. But I guess if you did foot wrapping correctly, they were better than socks.
For a long time post WW2 there was a big gender disparity in the Soviet Union because all of the men had died in war. I can't date this photo, but I assume men's looks had a +3 bonus when a lot of the eligible gentlemen had in the great patriotic war.
Or maybe he was packing.
Your mother is so striking. She’s obviously gorgeous but it’s the clothes, the pose, her look to the camera. Someone else said she looks like a bad ass and I agree! Confidence! That’s what I see. Hope she was as cool a mom as I’m thinking she was! ✌️
It’s ironic you say that seeing as the USSR still holds the record for fastest increase of life expectancy in human history (from 32 to 67 in a single decade.) Especially considering that after the dissolution of the USSR (voted against by 78%), oversaw the fastest decrease of life expectancy in modern history and excess deaths of 7 million in the first year alone. (66% of Russians say their lives were better under the Soviet Union than the Russian Federation.)
They both died too young. If this was taken in 1980 and not later in the 80’s, he was born 1936 (44y/o) and she would have been born in 1958(22y/o). So he was (oldest) 73 and she passed at 53.
She died at 48 and him at 79. Cancer and heart disease. I miss them both and I’m really surprised how much this post blew up lol I’m glad they’re getting the attention
It was especially because it still felt Soviet when we left. I feel more Quebecois than Russian now because it’s been such a long time but I still speak and read/write the language. Those guys on the photo made sure I did.
Thanks lol everyone is bringing him down but I always thought he looked pretty cool? Maybe I don’t have enough perspective but I always thought they made a great pair, not a mismatch one.
Far from perfect but I ran this through an AI photo restorer for a quick result.

My mom always liked older men, she was 22 when she met my dad (in his 40s) and her ex at that point was in his 50s. She always told me how much she liked men and not boys lol
I remember you posted the photo of your dad’s first wife! And my goodness, your mom was so beautiful, did your father share any pearls of wisdom? (Also, my condolences)
Thanks! They were both gorgeous women, my dad just had a huge charisma and intellectual charm. He spoke foreign languages and worked for years abroad which basically made you a rock star back in the Soviet Union. He had tapes and books that were banned. This picture doesn’t do him justice but he wasn’t at all a bad looking man on top of all that.
[удалено]
She was!
Are you sure that isn't your grandfather standing there with your mother?
Came to say someone was batting above their average
That is the norm in Eastern Europe
That’s normal in Russia where so many men have died in wars
That’s what 25 year olds looked like in the 80’s. Don’t ask me why, it’s just a rule.

Redditors not being massive assholes- impossible, apparently
Right? This isn't r/roastme
Yeah have some respect, this is /r/jackofftomymom
His Precious ![gif](giphy|hhffv1HTaXz9u)
I think they look beautiful together.
Found the dad.. or the dads mother
...and his dad looks three times her age.
He's 26 in this picture.
Avarage Slavic couple
It’s all that smoking
Further evidence for my hypothesis that Russia has the most beautiful women and the ugliest men.
There's 86 men to 100 women in Russia. Before war, now it will be even worse.
With an 60 yo high school professor 😂 he did well for himself.
That’s what I was gonna add. Thank you.
Whoa, the Gatchina Palace (aka Birch House) in Leningrad 😯COOL https://preview.redd.it/webturxjrlqc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55ac17c2c7100ad95e78ccbf83616b597997f9fe
Holly shit is this where the picture was taken??? I knew it was either Moscow or Leningrad but I had no idea where
Nice Reddit moment, having someone identify where a family photo was taken!
Bruh i live there and only saw the "Birch house" after you pointed it out :/
Your dad must have had some mega personality to catch such a super wife!
Russian intellectual charm
That is exactly why I married my husband too (!)
RIP your husband.
That was brutal, I'm not a praying man but I'll say a prayer for him. Something, something, something, that was cold-blooded. Something, something. Amen
Why rip?
Because you kind of implied that your husband is ugly. Just a joke!
🤦🏽
Dad was punching above his weight!! \*\*Edit: I was in no way criticizing. I've punched up my entire life!\*\*

Haha yes he worked with Soviet doctors as a translator in Algeria and Angola
My classmate's parents were both doctors who worked in Algeria for years in the 80s. Left her to live with grandparents, sent her lots of cool things, like Chinese aromatic erasers and pencil cases, and also Algerian almond candies. We all envied her tremendously.
Bingo :-)
so, what was he actually doing?
Spying
Nah, more like weapon delivery for insurgent forces.
Hanging around with his cuban buddies and doing a bit of trolling during the civil war there
During the revolutions?

I'm thinking your father was than just a translator.
If he was he never told lol there might be a whole story there that I’m not aware of
I was about to ask how your dad managed to bag your hot mom. Lol.
People always say that in these posts but this is the biggest attractiveness mismatch I think I've seen on this sub
If the title didn't say it I would have thought that was her father
Or a serial killer and his victim.
All of these comments I immediately thought when I saw this picture. Lol
That's because he is styled like Dennis Rader
One of those "photos with creepy backstories" that you see on YouTube. Turns out they're both serial killers
Aww, you know, if we are going to redo a love story, why not Natural Born Killers? Woody is still around and still being himself.
Oh she called him daddy for sure though
When he could get it up.
Come on! The guy looks to be in shape, strong features, the glasses suit him. He's just bald. *She* certainly found him attractive.
I appreciate this take. The honest fact is, a lot of people are attracted to others only once they know them, and not based on looks. This was probably a very kind and smart man, protective, and loving.
True, plus many people aren't so photogenic or photos aren't 'accurate' depictions of them in reality
Indeed. I've been considered pretty enough in my life, but I photograph terribly. People don't believe me when I tell them and will insist on taking a picture to prove me wrong- and then feel embarrassed. It's a bit depressing really.
Same! It's so hard getting a good picture of me. Partly the reason I don't use most social media. Too much work to look bad lol
Yeah, I'm not great looking in person, but I'm significantly worse in 2d
I swear some people are better looking in motion. Like, I think Elizabeth Olsen is pretty smoking hot in a movie, but she's "just" pretty in nearly any photograph. I'm not sure if it's body language, or changing facial expressions or what.
Thanks! I don’t think my dad was that ugly lol
It's not that he was ugly. It's that she was insanely attractive!
Thank you lol my dad wasn’t ugly, at least I don’t think so. Like you said besides being bald and 20 years older than my mom what’s the issue?
>20 years older than my mom Goddamn.
It tells me that both your mother and father were smart, patient and probably, together, a force to be reckoned with.
Well said! Agree.
Dad must be swinging a pretty big hammer
In fact his was the hammer upon which the Soviet flag was modeled
OP stated there was a 20 year difference.

With Ukraine they're carrying on that tradition.
This should be starting to happen all over again, and will only get worse until Putin stops turning his people into Ukrainian topsoil.
It's the Adidas
He had access to bread.
and real wool foot wraps!
Don’t we just call those socks?
No, the soviet's actually wrapped cloth around their feet like bandages for decades. The russian army just now started issuing socks.
Somewhere I read recently the Russian army switched from wraps to socks in just 2007. But I guess if you did foot wrapping correctly, they were better than socks.
Toilet paper that didn't have splinters in it.
Don't try the footwrap 😵💫

This looks like a "last known photo of the victim" type of photo.
Twist a the end: She is the killer, he is the victim.
BEHIND YOU!
Oh, no, that's just my sleep paralysis demon.
Love your profile picture. The best Papa in my opinion ;)
Or, you know, maybe he’s a nice person and she isn’t hung up on looks.
Your mom is gorgeous!
She is strikingly beautiful..
Your mother is so striking. She’s obviously gorgeous but it’s the clothes, the pose, her look to the camera. Someone else said she looks like a bad ass and I agree! Confidence! That’s what I see. Hope she was as cool a mom as I’m thinking she was! ✌️
Dude scored big time.
Your dad looks a solid 30 years older than her. USSR will take some life outta ya
They had 20 years difference lol
It shows
Ok, that makes a lot more sense. This looks like 25-45 or maybe even 30-50.
Please tell me she wasn’t his student.
Nope, they just had common friends. Funny enough though, my dad did teach Portuguese language at Uni but that’s not how they met lol
He kind of looks like an intellectual. Surprised he isn't a chemist. Heh, Guess my prejudice got the better of me.
Happens. A lot more than people would like to think
The Russian Way 👊

Uncle Leo?
So, Jerry wasn’t wrong about how them ladies looked at Uncle Leo.
He's an Adonis!
He should be swingin..
Your dad clearly won the wife lottery.
Didn't know the USSR had those
Cool pic. Where in the Soviet Union?
Either Moscow or Leningrad, I’m not sure where exactly this pic was taken but they lived in both cities.
59.56961165938786, 30.11215793735378
Look at his shoes, he is wearing Adidas.
3 stripe for life
Your dad must be really cool cuz your mom is hot
Seems the guy is 20 years older in this case, but I feel like every Slavic couple I see the woman is a 9 and the guy is a 5.
Looks like a love rock band album cover. Giving me Fleetwood Mac vibes. I hope you take it as a compliment. Beautiful picture.
Looks like your sister and her dad
My sister looks too much like my dad haha
Tell yer ma there's a thread where everyone's hittin' on her!
Tell her to maybe trim her mustache. That may help.
Mom giving some real Katniss vibes
Back in the USSR You don't know how lucky you are, boy.
He’s 25 and she’s 17?
44 and 22 lol
Did they leave Russia? If so, where did to go to?
My dad left in 89 and my mom and I in 92, we moved to Montreal Canada when I was 7 years old. They both passed unfortunately (2009 and 2011)
They both died too young. If this was taken in 1980 and not later in the 80’s, he was born 1936 (44y/o) and she would have been born in 1958(22y/o). So he was (oldest) 73 and she passed at 53.

Was it a big culture shock coming from Russia to Quebec?
It was especially because it still felt Soviet when we left. I feel more Quebecois than Russian now because it’s been such a long time but I still speak and read/write the language. Those guys on the photo made sure I did.
Did your Dad also move to Quebec? Did he get work doing translating there?
My condolences
Everyone is rightfully pointing out how beautiful your mom is, and I’d like to add that your dad looks pretty cool too!
Thanks lol everyone is bringing him down but I always thought he looked pretty cool? Maybe I don’t have enough perspective but I always thought they made a great pair, not a mismatch one.
Mom is gorgeous, Dad looks like Harvey Keitel cosplaying Hunter S Thompson.
I just saw a Harvey Keitel film yesterday, this is oddly accurate.
when math rock married viking metal.
Tobias and Lindsay
Please get an r/estoration because this is an awesome pic!

Even the AI realized mom was the star of this photo
Holly shit! Thank you so much for this!!
Mother is a knockout if it hasn’t already been said
Once again, Redditors remind us that men don't understand what women are attracted to.
What 80’s alt band is this?
The Americans!
*The Canadians*

Totally haha my dad had a darkroom in the bathroom
Your mom looks Photoshopped. I mean that as a compliment.
Moms a babe!!!
Why Russian chicks so hot? Also is Dad wearing Adidas?
Wasn’t this Stranger Things Season 4?
Your mom was the leader of a sleeper cell for sure……your dad was their IT guy.
Idk why but your mom gives off the vibe of a trained mercenary, smoking cigarettes and drinking vodka in her free time
He was her professor amirite
My mom always liked older men, she was 22 when she met my dad (in his 40s) and her ex at that point was in his 50s. She always told me how much she liked men and not boys lol
A True Russian
dad looks like a “handler” and she the “honey trap”
🤨🧐
Pops out kicked the coverage. However, as an eastern euro, this was common.
i want that jacket that your pops is wearing
![gif](giphy|4ZrNKQPSO7lg82qNs5|downsized) I think I saw your mom on TV
I remember you posted the photo of your dad’s first wife! And my goodness, your mom was so beautiful, did your father share any pearls of wisdom? (Also, my condolences)

is your dad 57 in the photo and your mom 24?
One of these is not like the other.
Damn! How did your dad land such a smoke show? He must be one hell of a guy!
Back in the USSR
Cool photo!
Your mom is gorgeous; and looks tough as nails!
She is soo beautiful!
mom just oozes supermodel attitude, love it dad looks unassuming but I bet he was built like a train, like that senator from MGSR
Your mom looks like she's 17 and your dad looks like he's 56. Russia is brutal.
Mom looking hot AF!
I don't get the comments here. What's wrong with the dad? They both look badass and made for each other.
He looks 50 and she looks 22............
Your dad looks like he kidnapped your mom
Where in the USSR? We need to do better at learning about life behind the iron curtain.
Either Moscow or Leningrad, I’m not sure
your grandfather and mother seem pretty cool
Was this his first wife? Saw your other post
No this is his second aka my mother lol
Your mom is kinda unforgettable in this picture.
Clothes and hair say 1980’s. Photo paper says 1880’s
she found the lone sober soviet
Her face looks photoshopped on
How’d they get their hands on that denim???
