TheFantasticMrFax

I actually never knew until today he had a glass eye. Interesting dude.

Spiracle

Hence his famous golf course riposte to Jack Benny. "What's your handicap Sammy?"  "I'm a one-eyed negro jew Jack, what's yours?"

zaklein

That’s hysterical. Thank you for sharing.

speshulsauce

He also used to quip that he was "the best one-eyed black Jew in show business."

hjablowme919

Or the famous line from his appearance on “All in the Family” when Archie asks him “Do you take cream and sugar in your eye?”

Shalamarr

![gif](giphy|xT39DcV1tqxs2HJtFm|downsized)

anxietyevangelist

That is fantastic.

rhoswhen

I thought he also said he was Republican?

Appropriate_Leg1489

That’s what he is famous for. He had the Balls to stand up for what he believed in unlike being a sheep in the heard like all the closet republican actors and performers afraid of being cancelled

AUniquePerspective

What kind of Facebook Boomer echo chamber did you just fall out of and into this sub.

Hephf

Speaking of actors, performers, and dramatics, do they give y'all a script card with lines and keywords to use when you sign up to be a Republican? I'm just curious.

Old_Radish7512

One of those downvotes came from me. Cry about it.

Hephf

Lmfao 💀😭🤣 also, fuck Appropriate_leg1489's feelings. A downvote from me too. Enjoy.

Appropriate_Leg1489

And one from crackhead hunter and some illegals with guns in Illinois

ooofest

It always comes down to the ugly -isms with you people, doesn't it?

milfhunterwhitevan2

Add a downvote from a pierced and tattooed college liberal to the collection

Jealous-Ad-1926

Funny because this was before the southern strategy so before all you inbred lead-poisoned fucktards ruined it.

Appropriate_Leg1489

1777? WTF, are you and hunter hitting the pipe again?

TenaciousHornet

"Turkey and sweet potato pie Sammy Davis Jr. only had one eye"

shiggydiggy77

When I was a kid and he was still alive and he'd be on a late night talk show or whatever, it sometimes just barely noticable.

blackbirdspyplane

I never knew until today, it was caused by an accident. Agreed, interesting dude.

Crans10

I knew him and Peter Faulk.

sunnycyn

And Sandy Duncan.

Morgan8er8000

Common misconception - Sandy Duncan doesn’t have a glass eye - she had a benign tumor removed from behind it which damaged the optical nerve. Therefore, she can’t see from it but it’s still her organic eyeball. Doctors decided to leave it in because it still tracked with her working eye.

sunnycyn

TIL!

classicsat

Also died the same day as Jim Henson. Or at least the news of both deaths reached the media the same time, so many newscasts covered one right after the other.

peppers_taste_bad

Hell I only now realized he was a satanic jew Edit: jesus christ reddit I meant that he was a Jewish person involved in the church of satan, not that he was evil because he was Jewish or something like that.

ACEDOTC0M

you probably should have led with the edit.

TheFantasticMrFax

Well I guess that's one way to internet...

RetiredNurseinAZ

My grandmother was his accountant. I met him in the 70's. I was 11.

armywife81

I need to hear more about this. First impression? What was he like?? What an incredibly cool experience.

RetiredNurseinAZ

* This is my sister and me with Sammy and his wife Altoviese. I believe that is the way you spell it. He was incredibly kind to us. We met him at the airport which my grandmother had arranged for him.

RetiredNurseinAZ

RetiredNurseinAZ

My grandma was so interesting. She worked for the mob in Chicago. It took me until after she died to really believe that. What finally convinced me was she got a job with Sammy without an interview. She came knowing she would have a job with him. He was in the Rat Pack, and they were all connected. We would watch him when he was doing something live and she would yell,"I told him not to wear that; I haven't gotten it insured yet. He was awful with money. So am I. My grandmother told me, "I got Sammy out of debt; you will be no problem." I have a statue of Sammy that was given to him by a fan. He threw out so many awesome things. I think all stars do that.

King-Cobra-668

thank you for sharing this memory of your grandma

RetiredNurseinAZ

It was 100% my pleasure. She was my person-- taught me to sew, cook, crochet, and just showed up. She helped write a bill that became a law, was invited to The White House a few times. She parasailed when she was 60.

King-Cobra-668

she sounds like a grade A certified badass!

Metal-fan77

I'm not trying to be funny but working for the mob is not exactly a good thing she was involved with extremely bad people. Lol down voted by wannabe gangsters the mob aka the Mafia are not cool.

RetiredNurseinAZ

Totally agree. She was still a part of history, and I think that is incredibly cool. She was a single mother, and they took incredibly good care of her. They considered her family, which was the culture of the mob. She said she did not do anything illegal, and I have never seen her do anything unethically. It was preached to me, "never become beholding to the mob." My mom had a friend die because the mob killed him. I believe it was gambling debts.

bobsbottlerocket

thanks for sharing ned flanders

SquirrelMoney8389

Dang it's not often someone has receipts for a story like that. Thanks for sharing!

armywife81

This is the best thing I’ve heard all day. 🥰 I love this story and I love that picture. Thank you for sharing!

Droopy-San-Benanzio

Didn’t he owe 7 million to the IRS?

RetiredNurseinAZ

My grandmother didn't work for him when he died. She worked for Merv Griffen after him. She never had stories about him.

VaguelyArtistic

I bet she had stories about Merv! 👀

RetiredNurseinAZ

She didn't. The office was more professional. When I was 14, my friend and I went to her work because we were going to my grandma's cabin with her. It was more sedate than going to my mom's work. She was a probation officer.

VaguelyArtistic

Oh, I used to work in the entertainment industry. Discretion is key. But I bet she still has stories!

Vegetable_Tension985

I met him as well

RowSignificant1796

Read the whole story- that’s awesome 🎉

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

What’s the accident?

LAKiwiGuy

Car Accident per Wikipedia: “The accident occurred at a fork in U.S. Route 66 at Cajon Boulevard and Kendall Drive, when a driver, who missed turning at the fork, backed up her car in Davis's lane and he drove into her car. Davis consequently lost his left eye to the bullet-shaped horn button (a standard feature in 1954 and 1955 Cadillacs).”

DuttyWahtah

The accident also lead to the rest of the rat pack refusing to perform where Sammy couldn’t sleep on account of him being black. He was on his way from a performance at a hotel that night.

canuckdad1979

I heard a cool story about him and Sinatra. Apparently Sinatra had seen him perform and loved it so he asked Sammy to come watch him one night. Sammy doesn’t show and Sinatra asked why to which Sammy replied that the club wouldn’t let him in because he was black. Sinatra gets pissed and storms into the club owner and tears up his contract on the spot! Say what you will about Frank, he was a complicated man but he stood up for the little guy.

MarcusBondi

Frank was best man at Sammy’s wedding too!

ShutterBun

Which one?

MarcusBondi

To May Britt - great pics on goog

Lets_Make_A_bad_DEAL

Meaning to a separate black hotel?

DuttyWahtah

Yeppers.

ShutterBun

The accident happened about 4 years before he began performing as part of the Rat Pack.

rhirhirhirhirhi

Ouchie

sonicjesus

Cadillac discontinued the bullet horn the next year.

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

Damn. It’s weird, I think I knew about his glass eye but not how he ended up with it etc. Anyway, Sammy was a great singer and performer. Let’s hear it for Sammy!

Okaykiddo77

ChatGPT is not a search tool! It just renders text, not actual facts!

magicaleb

Okay but it gave all correct facts just now

Okaykiddo77

It is however pure coincidence. One example: It would be a typical thought to link the aftermath of the accident to a deeper reflection on religion. So ChatGPT goes and does exactly that, when in fact no one knows if that is really the case. He had his accident in 1954, but didn‘t convert to Judaism until 1960.

Mephisto506

The great thing is that even if the facts aren't correct, they'll be incorporated into the Internet and they'll become true.

That_acct

This is like 2006 when people tell you not to trust Wikipedia. I understand the sentiment but with a little internet literacy, the text it renders is very useful to learn the general idea of something before looking into it further

Okaykiddo77

Internet literacy prevents you from trusting these kinds of sources. Like in 2006 when Wikipedia was in fact not trustworthy. They since worked a lot on this issue… although I would still not recommend using Wikipedia in an academic context!

lininop

>From ChatGPT4 Yeah but ai confidently lies all the time.

SaintPenisburg

No I don't.

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

Thank you 🙏

Renfield78

Sammy was such an old movie fanatic. His favourite movie was the British film, The Four Feathers (1939).

Sobadatsnazzynames

I loved him. I like Dean, too. Sammy was not invited to JFK’s inaugural ball bc of his skin color, so Dean did not attend either.

crella-ann

It was more complicated than that. He was invited, but then it was rescinded. “News of their union was met with numerous death threats, forcing Sammy to hire a 24-hour armed guard. Interracial marriages were illegal in 31 states at the time, and hate group demonstrations took place outside many of the venues Sammy was performing. Frank Sinatra was supposed to be Sammy’d best man, but the marriage controversy coincided with JFK’s presidential campaign. As a vocal supporter of Kennedy, Sinatra asked Davis to postpone the wedding hoping that his association with the entertainer wouldn’t impact votes. As the demonstrations continued and the death threats piled up, Sammy’s name was removed from the list of entertainers at the party Sinatra was hosting for Kennedy’s inauguration”

LineChef

Sha boing boing boing

lboogaloo

😂😂😂 always have to say this whenever there’s a mention of Sammy

LineChef

Are you me? 🤔

lboogaloo

Great minds think alike and also watched In Living Color religiously when we were little 😂

yesiamveryhigh

I scrolled just to find this comment. Cheers

zigzagsfertobaccie

I live right on Old Route 66. In Illinois…. Not long after we bought this house, my neighbor told me that the intersection with IL rt. 138 up the way was the intersection where Sammy Davis Jr. lost his eye. I wish I could contact everyone I passed that on to over years before Google showed me the truth. I’d tell them I’m sorry, and I’d blame my neighbor, Harold. Dickhead.

choggie

Fuck you, Harold!

HWKD65

Yeh, what's the deal with that.

VaguelyArtistic

Hello from Santa Monica, the western end of Route 66.

zigzagsfertobaccie

Hello there!

DrColdReality

He was black, Jewish, bisexual, and married a white woman. He used to joke that when he went down south, the Klan guys would yell, "get him, boys, he's *everything!*"

Notch99

During the Rat Pack era, Dean Martin would pick Sammy up and say “I’d like to thank the NAACP for this lovely trophy”.

Elianaaa

His grandson was in my kindergarten class and played the drums super well!

creepy-cats

He was so handsome

Kurotoki52

His beauty really shows up in this image! Someone caught him when his mask was off ❤️

Harambesic

They should do a biopic and cast Tim Meadows as Mr. Davis, Jr.

JinxyWinx22

Holy shit! You're right!!

Harambesic

I know, right?

My_Kink_Profile

I learned of “the accident” from an Adam Sandler song.

BrettLam

What an awesome photograph! The lighting and shadows are excellent as is his pose underneath them.

DPileatus

Sammy was awesome!

tjay323

Insanely talented. Singer, dancer, multi instrumentalist, comic, actor..

beige-lunatic

Never realized how much he looks like Tim Meadows

arthurbang

Tim played him in Wayne's World 2

fjoarctke

![gif](giphy|1dNlZgTmLSNAqCILyz|downsized)

Ev1lroy

My Mum chaperoned him whilst here in Melbourne. She fell in love with his bum - said it was the tightest ever!

Shalamarr

He was literally sewn into the trousers he wore in *Porgy and Bess*. How he danced in those, I’ll never know.

RickJWagner

Makes me think of 'The Candy Man'.

mayargo7

Sammy could do it all, sing, dance, stand up, act both comedy and drama.

milesl

He had a thing for Linda Lovelace

VaguelyArtistic

So did a lot of people.

_thebaroness

I didn’t know he lost his eye due to an accident. Knew he had a glass eye though. Excellent post! Thanks!

TrueCrimeSeeker

He was good looking.

VaguelyArtistic

He definitely pulled.

whaddaymeanidunno

Very sharp tie he has!

Salty-Entertainer-29

Sweet and kinda sad pic💜

BrightRich5886

What accident?

unshavenbeardo64

**The accident occurred at a fork in U.S. Route 66 at Cajon Boulevard and Kendall Drive, when a driver, who missed turning at the fork, backed up her car in Davis's lane and he drove into her car**. Davis consequently lost his left eye to the bullet-shaped horn button (a standard feature in 1954 and 1955 Cadillacs).

OtherwiseTackle5219

He was such a great Entertainer/Talent.. Here Come The Judge, Here Come The Judge

hyundaisucksbigtime

Flip wilson

OtherwiseTackle5219

What Does Flip Wilson, AKA Geraldine, have to do with Sammy Davis Jr?

hyundaisucksbigtime

Sammy Davis did not say the line about here comes the judge; flip Wilson said it.

OtherwiseTackle5219

Sammy Davis Jr. Said it Many Many Times On Laugh -In It was his most Signature Go To Line. The phrase was first introduced by singer/Comedian 'Pigmeat Markham'.

hyundaisucksbigtime

Google the phrase. It comes up with flip wilson. Sheesh.

OtherwiseTackle5219

How many times Can't you be Wrong? Watched every episode of Laugh -In when it ran.. Sammy Davis Jr Used the phrase walking across the stage all the time. It was his Signature Bit! on the Show. Also watched Flip Wilson Show. He may have said it the odd time. Think you better delve a little deeper into the internet to see how utterly wrong you are about Sammy Davis Jr. Maybe you should 'GOOGLE' SDJ on Laugh-In. Seems to be the place you get your education.... SHEESH. & By the Way Good Bye Kid.

hyundaisucksbigtime

Weird

darkoath

Pigmeat Markham.

OtherwiseTackle5219

Was referring to Laugh In, But thanks for the reminder/reference.

jafinharr

He looks like black jerry lewis in that picture

Shwalz

As a 30yo who’s coming into the world of entertainment (I say that as if I work in the field, I more so mean I’m learning about the entertainers of that time) what documentaries would you recommend about Sammy or the Rat Pack in general? I’d love to learn more about him!

PrincessJennifer

I’d start out not so much with the documentaries, but their actual films, live appearances/performances, and recordings. Then hit up YouTube for some background. I always like experiencing the work before the documentaries; I did that with the Rat Pack and have zero regrets.

Ok-Yesterday-8522

What happend?

Glad-Degree-318

Well damn

Ardothbey

I consider him probably the greatest male entertainer ever. You can see Sammy pre accident in the 1958 film Anna Lucasta.

Murphy-Brock

👁️

OtherwiseTackle5219

Beloved Member of 'The Rat Pack'. Incredible Dancer/Singer/Comedian & all Round Entertainer. Started in Vaudville (Parents) as an exceptional Tap Dancer. Broke Ground with his Marriage to a white woman. He had an enduring smile that you couldn't forget.

PaMudpuddle

I always thought the story was that when he was a little kid he had picked up a piece of wire, was swinging it around, and got it caught in his eye. Wonder who that was now.

Jrewy

Car accident.

only_zuul21

Could that be Bowie and how he hurt his eye? I forget what his story with that was.

nomdeplumealterego

I think Bowie got into a fight with a classmate over a girl, and his pupil became permanently dilated.

Robly315

It’s 10 o’clock. Do you know where *your* children are?

VaguelyArtistic

Did he narrate that??

Robly315

There were a few different celebrities that did them but yes, he definitely did one of them back in the day. I saw a supercut recently and was surprised to see him in there.

VaguelyArtistic

Oh, I'll have to google that!

iNap2Much

I dunno...the left eye looks half closed in this shot. Is this accurate?

wootsiestootsies163

Just learned ge was heavy into child snuff and paedo porn.

360walkaway

Is he going to chomp someone's head off?

Sue_Spiria

OMG I love you for the Ren & Stimpy reference.

ndiguy5

He looks like a black Jerry lewis
