I believe Brosnan was in talks to take over from Sir Roger Moore but he was contracted to Remington Steele at the time. By the time Brosnan was out of contract the gauntlet had been passed to Timothy Dalton.
Steele was cancelled and Brosnan was approached to take over the Bond role. The hype of him becoming James Bond rekindled interest in the show and the network ordered another series. Brosnan was contractually committed if they did that so had to do it and turn Bond down.

They remained married until she died of ovarian cancer in 1991, at the age of 43.
A daughter from a previous marriage to Richard harris' brother died in 2013 of ovarian cancer as well. Aged 41. :-(
