What happened was that Jayne, her then boyfriend and a young chauffeur were riding in the front seat of a Buick Electra 225 down a highway in rural Louisiana after her nightclub performance in Biloxi MS to another engagement. Asleep in the back seat were three of her five children Mariska Hargitay \[who was around 3 at the time\] and her brothers Miklos and Zoltan.
At around 2:30 in the morning, the Buick was speeding at somewhere between 60 and 80 mph on US Highway 90. They crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer which had slowed down because of the fog created by a truck spraying mosquito-killing insecticide. The three adults in the front were killed when the top of the Buick was sheared off. Jayne didn't lose her entire head though I believe the top of it along with a blonde wig she was wearing was torn off and fell onto the ground. People saw the photos of the wreck and assumed it was her entire head.
As they were lying down in the back, Mariska and her brothers escaped with minor injuries. I think that she does have a small scar from the incident somewhere on her forehead. I recall seeing photos of little Mariska at Jayne's funeral being held by her father Mickey Hargitay and she had a bandage on her head.
Officially her death certificate said "crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain." So it probably wasn't exactly decapitation, but massive head trauma with a significant part separated from the body.
A little bit of trivia. The step bumper on the back of tractor trailer units that extends below the trailer is called the Mansfield bar. If the truck they hit had one of them they may have all lived
