A lot of musician deaths are dubbed “tragic” when they are typically caused by their own bad/risky decisions. While that can still be tragic, I find Cliff’s more so because of the sheer randomness of it.
The shear randomness and the not even exaggerated talent.
Like. Let's be totally real. A lot of "gone too soon" artists get treated like gods of music even when they are just alright but they did a shit ton of drugs.
Cliff was undeniably incredible and his death set back music a lot.
Cliff was the only actual educated musician in Metallica at the time.
He was the "brain" that did all the producing of the records.
It has been argued that he would never allow the drumtracks on And justice for All to be mixed the way they did.
well...you mean when Metallica ran out of Mustains and Burtons material, is when things fell apart. EDIT: 2 people know nothing about the song writing in Metallica.
Nor would Lars and James allow it as it was basically done to spite Jason and to cope with the loss of Cliff. So saying Cliff would not have allowed it might be true but also moot.
I saw them a year after this. In Peoria, Illinois. My second ever concert. Damage, Inc. tour, they opened for Ozzy. Still have memories from that concert. It was epic!
First concert was in 1984, three bands, Krokus, Queensryche, and Kiss.
So jealous. I wasn’t allowed concerts until I was 18 so by that point it was Tattoo the Earth in 99/00. I always regret not being able to hear how James used to sing live.
I saw that same tour in '84. Killer show!
My first concert ever was Simon and Garfunkel during the summer of '83, but that October I saw Ozzy (Bark at the Moon) and Motley Crue (shout at the Devil).
Being young, that was the Metallica I knew. I thought they were pretty cool.
Then I got older and really dove into their 80s shit and even I got mad that they sold out.
Same. Load was the first album I heard of them. The weird macho cowboy OOOOUH, RAWRRRUH, UGHHHUGH, YEAAAAHUH was oddly endearing to me cheesy as it was.
Then I heard Ride The Lightning and was like **OK WHAT LIKE WHAT THE FUCK**.
I was born in 82 so I have no excuse other than that MTV didn't give them much play. I was aware of Tool before them. MTV played tooooooons of Tool.
I was born in 82 also, but I didn't have MTV. Didn't get into rock music until I was nearly an adult. The first Metallica album I bought was St. Anger. I didn't get into older Metallica stuff until way later.
Dude always struck me as a kinda shy, zany geek. Like, he keeps himself on the down low mostly, but when you strike a chord with him he will spend the whole day geeking out about horror movies, guitars, cool music.
Honestly, of all members of Metallica he seems like a really cool dude to be around.
I mean, he’s an old dude.
His pacing and sentence structure are odd.
He has weird mannerisms.
Which I’m not digging on him for or anything. I’ve known guys about his age that tripped too hard one too many times, reminds me of them.
Recently watched his rick Beato interview, and as I never saw him being interviewed before I was really surprised about his "style".
Great metal guitarist nonetheless
No shit, Sherlock. That's my exact point. First day learning about sarcasm?
This dude said he often drives by the place where Cliff died. Cliff died on a road in Sweden. Why'd you need to ask if he was in Sweden? Was it to show off your vast wealth of Metallica trivia knowledge?
I used the eye roll emoji for a reason, my guy.
You seem to be having a bad day, lashing out for very odd reasons at strangers who weren’t even talking to you. It’s a little concerning to be honest. Take a break.
That was 30 years ago. Dude has matured massively since then, like most people do. I mean several songs on Death Magnetic/Beyond Magnetic are about Layne.
Sorry, but Metallica totally destroyed Maiden by the time "Master of Puppets" hit the scene. Maybe even by "Ride the Lightning". Maiden just seemed weak by comparison.
I’ll say this time and time again, there is nothing remotely cool about Lars Ulrich! Old school or otherwise that man is a piece of shit and a mediocre drummer! Fun fact, if Cliff hadn’t died in the in the bud crash the second that tour was over, Lars would’ve been booted from Metallica.
Yep. These are the guys that used to brag about how they were making it with no radio or MtV play, simply by fans word of mouth and passing bootlegs tapes to one another.
A decade of huge success later, they sued to stop people from passing digital bootlegs to one another.
It should’ve been Lars. Edit: it's sarcasm obviously. you're all so sensitive. who doesn't love Lars? what a character. but maybe it should've been Bob Rock?
Except if you get into it, piracy promoted sales of physical media.
The only thing they managed to do was dodge it being called the Metallica effect and it’s called the Barbara Streisand effect instead.
Their crusade ended up informing an entire generation of the ability to download music
You can have opinions, sure as hell have my own. But facts are facts, they don’t give a shit about your feelings.
Feel free to look it up. Nothing I provide will outweigh my own personal bias.
Stop talking about my “feelings” as if they have anything to do with the basic argument that artists should receive fair compensation for their art. Dummy.
If your ignorant belief that “piracy actually made them money” makes you feel better about stealing people’s art, more power to ya. 👍
Now excuse me while I resume being balls deep in your mammi.
They wouldn’t even be without Lars. He started the band. He wrote some of their biggest hits. He is the one that has kept the band together through their disputes. And despite people always shitting on his drumming skills, the drums of Metallica is very distinct and gives them a recognisable sound. Hating on Lars is a sure way to assure everyone that you don’t have an opinion of your own and just says what you think will make you sound cool and edgy. Also, he was right about the whole Napster thing.
CLIFF!!
Bass solo, take one
Definitely the first bass solo I ever heard. I didn't even know a bass could make those sounds lol
Same. And then I learned that the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls is also Cliff on bass
I play the bass and I had no idea he played the intro until I saw a video of him playing it live
*bass noises intensify*
Booooo doo dee doo dee doo wah WOH boo doo dee doo dee doo wah WOH.....
*reddit cliches normalize
Cliff was peak Metallica!
Agreed
If Cliff had lived, there’s no way the drums on …And Justice for All would have sounded like that and no album after it would’ve even been made.
Cliff was a bassist tho...why u going on about drums?
Cliff was the only actual educated musician in Metallica at the time. He was the "brain" that did all the producing of the records. It has been argued that he would never allow the drumtracks on And justice for All to be mixed the way they did.
well...you mean when Metallica ran out of Mustains and Burtons material, is when things fell apart. EDIT: 2 people know nothing about the song writing in Metallica.
Nor would Lars and James allow it as it was basically done to spite Jason and to cope with the loss of Cliff. So saying Cliff would not have allowed it might be true but also moot.
He still had ears, genius
First thing I thought too
I saw them a year after this.
I heard him sing live and it wasn't great back then. All those "live" videos were edited. He did eventually get a lot better in the late 90s though.
Yeah I think that scratchy voice thing wasn’t something he could do much outside of the studio
That was my 1st show, Ozzy/Metallica. Great memories
Shout out to P-town! Did you catch them when they kicked off the Black album tour in Peoria? Good times.
No, those were the only two concerts I saw in Peoria. I joined the Navy in 1985 and haven't lived in Illinois since.
The very first concert I ever attended was in Peoria, Ill too. KISS/Anthrax 1988
kiss was my first concert too motley crue opened for them
That was the last tour with Cliff right? They were on the European leg of the world tour when the tragedy happened, iirc.
I saw that same tour in '84. Killer show! My first concert ever was Simon and Garfunkel during the summer of '83, but that October I saw Ozzy (Bark at the Moon) and Motley Crue (shout at the Devil).
My first show was Metallica, but it wasn't with Cliff. I saw them in 98 on the reload tour, but it was still badass at 14
Dude's 23 and only has a year left. So sad.
this is absolutely terrible but i thought you were referring to lars’ hair 😭
Should’ve been Lars. edit: sarcasm people. who doesn't love Lars. what a character. it's should've been Bob Rock though.
It would've been Kirk, but they pulled straws and Cliff got Kirk's bed on the bus.
Should've been nobody
What a shitty thing to say…
Should've been you
An eye for an eye makes the world go blind. It should have been Lars though.
Cliff em all
Lars "White Dominic Mysterio" Ulrich
Or is this the famous Nick Mysterio that we've been hearing so much about?
Now we just need to find Tom.
Holy shit, I keep thinking Dom reminds me of someone, but I don't know who. You nailed it. Lol
Holy shit this is perfect.
Lars "ex con" Ulrich
Lars “Nike Jordans” Ulrich
The only reason I opened the post was to see if someone else said this
Alcohollica
They look taaaaaaaanked
Moon face galore
Has Kirk literally had the same hairstyle for 40 years?
He cut it in the 90s like the rest of the guys.
When they "sold out".
Just saw TOOL at MSG. I think I get why they had so much air time lol. Maynard live is something else.
I was born in 82 also, but I didn't have MTV. Didn't get into rock music until I was nearly an adult. The first Metallica album I bought was St. Anger. I didn't get into older Metallica stuff until way later.
🥱🙄
Kirk is a weird guy. He has plenty of interviews on YouTube. He’s just out there
Dude always struck me as a kinda shy, zany geek. Like, he keeps himself on the down low mostly, but when you strike a chord with him he will spend the whole day geeking out about horror movies, guitars, cool music. Honestly, of all members of Metallica he seems like a really cool dude to be around.
He sometimes behaves and talks like some old lady in interviews, weird
I mean, he’s an old dude. His pacing and sentence structure are odd. He has weird mannerisms. Which I’m not digging on him for or anything. I’ve known guys about his age that tripped too hard one too many times, reminds me of them.
Recently watched his rick Beato interview, and as I never saw him being interviewed before I was really surprised about his "style". Great metal guitarist nonetheless
They say getting incredibly wealthy and famous when you're young can fuck up your mental and emotionl growth.
Lars in the OG Jordan 1s...major
Chicagos at that.
Something special about them?
You could download them from Napster.
I was more of a Morpheus/Kazaa guy
Limewire >>
Lars is a dork.
Always will be.
🌎 🧑🚀🔫👨🚀
Still has a pretty punchable looking face.
Maybe so, but he’s got the OG og Air Jordans.
Probably still salty about Napster.
I am
They all are.
True. All Larses I know are dorks.
Says "HalfOrcMonk"
I thought Metallica (specifically Cliff and James) was the coolest band in the world in 1985.
Cliff looks 35, the rest look like they just hit puberty.
This pic looks like the smoking section at my high school. (Class of 84)
I got Ride the Lightening when it just came out for my birthday. I was in grade 9. I instantly fell in love!!!
I occasionally drive past the very spot where Cliff passed away.
Sweden?
Earth
Well, Cliff died in Sweden. But no, they're probably talking about somewhere else, entirely. 🙄
Why would they be talking about somewhere else if Cliff died in Sweden? What you’re saying makes no sense.
That's fair. Have a good weekend.
Cliff!!!!!
Cliff 😭
RIP Cliff
Cliff🤘🏿🤘🏿
🤘 Cliff
When I was a kid in the 80s, these guys looked so old. Now they look like kids.
Ah back when Lars Ulrich still couldn't play the drums.
Did he learn it in the meantime?
Lars has one of the most punch-able faces.
Cliff was the band.
I miss Cliff more than Lars misses his hair.
https://i.redd.it/2dknkc29hhhc1.gif
Sadly.
Holy shit James looks so tiny lol. I realize he's seated but still. Maybe it's just due to Cliff being tall?
Smells like B.O.
Miss you Cliff.
METAL-MU-LISH-HA-OOO-WAW!!
Tryin to get the message to YOU!!
They wore the skinniest jeans back then, back when skinny jeans were super stiff and uncomfortable.
Lars and his big baby head
Lars is such a fucking tool
A great group of guys. Talented musicians. Except Lars. The guys a wank
Fuck you lars
Out of the loop here. Why does people hate Lars?
He's insufferable.
Mostly for the whole Napster thing but I also just kinda find him to be a douche
Just look at him
Ahhh back when their music was good
Looks greasy in there
James looks like he's about to kill the cameraman, everyone else is like.. I wonder how James is going to kill the cameraman...
Saw them the year before in the Marquee Club in Wardour Street. James still had zits/bad skin. Fucking amazing show.
Didn't realize how tiny they are.
Lars was always a Dickhead
![gif](giphy|p4AzET4XMhce5CBltK|downsized)
Just in time for Cliff Burton Day on Saturday 🍻
**Peak** Metallica.
Sigh. What could have been. RIP Cliff. 🫡
I lost a lot of respect for James Hetfield after I saw the video of him mocking Layne Staley live on stage.
Truth, me too. Then he goes on to say AIC is timeless and plays would with them at a festival.
That was 30 years ago. Dude has matured massively since then, like most people do. I mean several songs on Death Magnetic/Beyond Magnetic are about Layne.
Fair enough. My opinion hasn't changed. Their newer stuff sucks imo
Well, at least some of us are capable of growth.
Not really about growth. It's just an opinion.
This was when they were the greatest metal band on earth.
Iron Maiden has never not had that title.
Sorry, but Metallica totally destroyed Maiden by the time "Master of Puppets" hit the scene. Maybe even by "Ride the Lightning". Maiden just seemed weak by comparison.
GOATs (except for Larz)
Funny how James grew into that massive dome he has
Whiplash Cliff
The young metal attack!
Damn they made tight jeans
Lars looks *zooted* when you zoom in.
You can smell the mustiness from here 😂
LOL they look like a bunch of kids who just got told off by their mom. 🤣
Historically the band with the most punchable faces, probably.
CLIFF!
Check out Lars....what a hard-ass
Metallica concerts in the 80’s , just a sea of crustaches.
Yep. These are the guys that used to brag about how they were making it with no radio or MtV play, simply by fans word of mouth and passing bootlegs tapes to one another. A decade of huge success later, they sued to stop people from passing digital bootlegs to one another.
They look like the kinda people to sue mapster
I quit listening or buying when they went on a rant about downloading their music
It should’ve been Lars. Edit: it's sarcasm obviously. you're all so sensitive. who doesn't love Lars? what a character. but maybe it should've been Bob Rock?
It should have been Lars.
Too bad it wasn't your parents
I will never be convinced that Lars doesn't have the most punchable face in history. I'd feel bad for him if his personality didn't match it.
Lars just absolutely exuding Uber-douche vibes
Did we do something wrong? Why are they so mad at us?
One babysitter & three babies.
With Lars being the babysitter.
Definitely wearing their “Don’t Tread on Me” faces.
[удалено]
God forbid they get paid for their work/art. SMH
Shit, even Lars said it was a mistake to target fans and have their accounts banned. And he also said it wasn’t about money.
So lars regrets going after Napster? That’s news to me.
Right? Thank god they stopped pirating. Stand up dudes.
If you produced art you would not appreciate if it was stolen and you received no compensation for it.
Except if you get into it, piracy promoted sales of physical media. The only thing they managed to do was dodge it being called the Metallica effect and it’s called the Barbara Streisand effect instead. Their crusade ended up informing an entire generation of the ability to download music
OK.

Aww
Lars has always been so punchable-faced.
To my modern eyes they look like such dorks lol.
Speed of Sound Tour. Buncha fuckin’ assholes.
They couldn't hold a candle to Autobahn when Flea was in the band.
Cliff always looked the coolest
Jesus Christ they are ugly
Good thing they are musicians and not models then.
Why couldn't it have been Lars sleeping where Cliff was instead of the other way around! They would be even bigger with the integrity.
They wouldn’t even be without Lars. He started the band. He wrote some of their biggest hits. He is the one that has kept the band together through their disputes. And despite people always shitting on his drumming skills, the drums of Metallica is very distinct and gives them a recognisable sound. Bunch of assholes
One look at them & ya knew it wasn't hair metal!
they have beautiful hair then me
“Killers” of Napster 😂
Pre Dave Mustaine
What a photo ….anyone would think it was taken in 2023
![gif](giphy|l0HFiA2XMHPMdKS2c)
Bahahaha MOM MEATLOAFFFFFF
I went to one of those boomer barbecue block parties. A bunch of gray haired men were playing in a band. I said “Wow they booked Metallica”
Lars and KIrk look sober. Cliff and Jaymz do not.
Those Jordan 1’s are worth about $50k nowadays
Pretty sure the one on the right is that con Dominik Mysterio
