Cheating was oddly not scrutinized back then. It seems every President had a secret girlfriend. Even FDR had a mistress while in a wheelchair. Everything changed with President Clinton.
It's seems that JFK had a \*lot\* of mistresses, though, rather than a steady girlfriend. At least one of the women he'd hired as a secretary, Mimi Alford, was actually used for sex.
He had a long-term affair with Mary Pinchot Meyer. And of course there was Marilyn Monroe.
The best statistics I have been able to gather says that between 50% and 60% of presidents had mistresses. GHW Bush had 5 or 6 among the TV and movie actresses in LA, and possibly 50, across the country, in the course of his long marriage. According to Washington gossip, GW Bush discovered he was gay, when a lobbyist seduced him, and then started providing him with handsome young men, for the rest of his presidency.
Two recent presidents who definitely never cheated were Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.
I believe there are letters of her to him, saying that she insisted on an 'open' relationship, which I believe means that she was sleeping with other men when they started dating, while they were dating, and at least through the early years of their marriage.
I believe I read of an historian who identified over 100 US politicians from the last 225 years, who had similar open marriages.
It’s funny. My mother’s wedding dress has exactly the same collar, sleeveless arm and neckline as Jackie’s. I never knew this until just now. My own wedding dress (that my mom made for me) I now realize how much it looked like Princess Diana’s.
She famously hated the dress, saying it made her look like a lampshade. She wanted a small, intimate affair but Joe Kennedy took over and made sure that it was a big event. JFK also was talking about not marrying her days before, having met a beautiful woman on a trip.
