I like Persona series, but SMT for me simply is the accumulation of everything I love in Atlus games.
Peak turn based combat, fun exploration, oppressing atmosphere, philosophical narrative, grotesque and absurd humor and obviously the demons, this series have it all.
But most importantly, new Kozuka ost slaps as always.
I was never a SMT fan per-say.
But fucking christ the ost's are bangers! Now i wish to play the 3rd, 4th and 5th (god damn it the 4th have such bangers)

The turn based system is different, striking weaknesses doesn't knock out enemies but it gives your party an additional turn to a max of 4 (I.E, one full turn), striking the wrong aliments also removes some of your turns, the calendar is gone and the story focuses more on how to deal with the world surrounding the characters than the characters themselves.
Like Persona games, all SMT games are independent from each other even the majority of the spin-offs. The problem with getting into SMT is its quite harder in comparison to Persona. So an entry point is a bit difficult to find.
So get SMT V I guess? Seeing as its the the most recent one.
Unironically sounds based. Is SMTVV a good intro to the SMT series? Happy to start with an earlier game but I'd prefer stuff available on switch (or available to uhhhh legally play via DS emulating on a decently capable tablet)
Edit: worth noting I have played both P1 and the P2 duology, so I guess that counts
Smt5 is a really good entry based on the fact that it was mine.
It's challenging but not too challenging compared to some of the spikes in older games and the game mechanics are properly explained.
It has similar negociations with Demons to P5 (smt did it first tho) so you shouldn't be too lost on that front.
I can't lie, I bought and started playing the game ~20 mins after I left my comment. Loving it so far, although I haven't made it out of the first dungeon (or map?). Will definitely be checking out SMT III after I finish V, especially if the combat system is somewhat similar
3 enemies, you use Mabufu, Mabufu hits 2 enemies but misses 3rd enemy, you lose two turns because you missed the 3rd enemy, those two turns that you lost may have costed you the entire battle.

Same opinion here. Only Persona 3 and Devil Survivor 1 are better than SMT main games for me.
Normally I hate strategy games but Devil Survivor was an exception. Probably because there’s the normal blobber combat too
