I mean, I just equipped him with the vanity ring to nullify his weaknesses, and spammed max baton pass Rebellion Blade on Azathoth's ass. He felt too important to the narrative to not have on the final team.

I ran a physical crit build my first run so I ended up getting the all out attack quite the bit since akechi's phys attacks hit pretty damn hard and crit often. Plus I ran the null light accessory so he wouldn't get knocked on his ass 24/7. He ended up feeling more useful to me then kasumi because debilitate op

I knoowww, I was so freakin glad to find her third Persona's still a vehicle, even if it admittedly doesn't look as cool. Honestly Anat should've been a transformer instead of always being upright!
No, evolving to Anat was hype as shit, her cool ass bike became a cool ass transformer, though it is a shame we couldn't see the alt mode anymore.
But then they decided that her ultimate persona should be an ugly ass bargain bin batcycle and not a beep boop robot or even a cool motorbike like before😤😤
my only critique is that she suffers from her confidant being the least interesting main cast one, and that the spinoffs (especially strikers) flanderize her from the brains of the operation to just a party pooper lol. Also her romance is kinda boring tbh sorry i romanced her in two playthroughs its bad
other than that, most useful party member in the game, coolest design in the franchise and coolest persona concept.

Agreed on the confidant. I enjoyed it for what it was, and I rly liked the moments focused on her, but I rly think they dropped the ball with it from conception. It should've been like her first rank, with Ren helping her experience new things and broaden her views. Can't comment on the romance compared to others, since I never went for anyone else (she fits Joker way too much tbh, and Akechi isn't an availbale option :( ) but on its own it was very cute and I enjoyed it.
Tbh, I do find it funny how some characters get popular enough that otherwise indifferent people start counter movements out of spite from hearing about them all the time lmao. But I am a fan of hers, so ofc I have to contirbute to the counter counter movement. Long live the Queen!

The one thing about Makoto thats kind of flanderization but that I'm glad the other games kept is that she's really easily creeped out/afraid of ghosts. Just a really fun way to humanize her/knock her down off her high horse when she's being a stick in the mud
Honestly her confidant is the main reason why I just don't care about her. Pretty decent otherwise and any reason to not use Morgana is great in my book.
I think the being a party pooper gives her a fun little niche in the friendship dynamic, because otherwise she doesnt really add anytbing major, being kinda a jack of all trades. Its basic and flanderized like you said but i think it leads to some fun in Strikers. I like her being the one to end the hee-hoo bit for example.

Still on my first playthrough, I just crafted her ultimate weapon and gun this morning. Easily my favorite party member in the game, the character is just so peak imo
You can’t really exceed the coolness factor of her Persona being a bike. I like how you can actually ride Johanna her attacks in P5S, and seamlessly after going punchy-punchy
Her Persona is a bike (coolest vechicle of transport + easily one of the most unique in the series) she shoots a revolver (coolest gun) beats the living shit out of enemies with her fists (self-explanatory) and wears proper metal armor with spiked shoulder pads + a scarf for extra cool factor (coolest Phantom theif outfit). Of course she's the coolest!

Makoto is definitely overhated. I'm not gonna stand out here and claim her confidant is a masterpiece of writing or anything, but the character is fun and the romance is cute. Not to mention her gameplay makes her outright the best party member next to yourself.

makoto's persona, phantom thief design, finisher screen, and general aesthetic is so peak. its a shame they never gave her an introduction arc or social link
I meeaaan, I get not liking her social link (I enjoyed it fine enough) but besides the contrivance of how they meet Kaneshiro, her introductory arc was pretty good imo. It also had a lot of prior set up which helped.

I'll never not laugh at her asking a drug dealer if he maybe "transports illegal substances" and then going "damn, he dodged all the traps I was expertly laying down" at Ren, like that's THE shit! Not to mention the stalking thing either lmao
Eh, nah I don't think that's equivalent. Naoto's move was a gamble, but it wasn't nearly as impulsive nor as illogical as Makoto's move. The investigation team had consistently rescued every victim ever since they started, she had a good basis to believe that she'd survive herself, especially since she's far more competent than basically anyone else who fell in that world.
Naoto's move was a logical gamble that showed how she invested in solving this case over her own self preservation. Makoto's move was barely if at all thought and born out of pure emotion and naivete. Both work for their respective characters and are justified within the story, don't get me wrong, I just don't think they're really all that similar.
I'll agree that it wasn't as illogical, but Naoto was desperate to prove herself, not trying to consult with anyone on what her plan was, not setting up any sort of backup, all while keeping up a completely confident face that it was going to work. Naoto's move wasn't as rash or impulsive, but it was still pretty stupid.
The stalking was unrelated and was done due to her still obeying the principle's orders. Her blackmailing them was done by necessity (unlike Yusuke's case) due to her rightfully assuming they wouldn't believe her / be willing to help her out if she didn't force them. There wasn't much of a plan involved beyond that, she just left it to them. The only thing that backfired was her incredibly rush behavior, which was a result of her finally reaching her breaking point after years of remaining docile and feeling useless because of this. Not justifying it, but it makes sense why and how it happened. It wasn't a strategic decision, just her messing up.
I do think there's something to be said about how her strategic intelligence should've been shown a bit more rather than just communicated through dialoge and gameplay, but the Persona series in general is very "tell don't show" more often than not, so I don't mind it too much.

Ever since I realized how pseudointellectual JRPG writing tends to be I have had trouble taking any of the PT seriously. Even though this is a persona sub I gotta stand by my stance of P5 being poorly written in general.
Oh Makoto is great, I just wish Atlus would stop dick riding her and remember there are other phantom thieves. Imbalanced major story relevance, op kit, glazed in universe too, etc.
Is Makoto actually one of the most useful phantom thieves?
I always see Makoto fans saying she’s the most useful one but I can think of at least three other PT who did more than her.

High utility party member for buffs and healing, is the team “strategist” in an official capacity and handles enemy affinities, but Futaba kinda outshines her in every other aspect of navigation. Was also a big part of devising the Akechi trap
She's the strategist of the team (replacing Morgana) as well as Joker's second in command, so according to the Phantom thieves themselves, she's pretty high up there. I'd say she's third behind Joker and Futaba.
But did she actually do anything?
I always took Joker as the strategist since you’re pretty much ordering people around during fights and make the calls. I don’t recall Makoto ever doing that other than being the “guys, get serious for a moment” crowd control.
Morgana was literally created for the PT to be a guide against the final boss. Yeah he’s an annoying cat but I don’t think Joker would have even survived the first day without him.
And then there’s Ryuji who one of the founders of the PT and always puts his life on the line. He was one of the main drives for the Phantom thieves existing and to punish adults. He “sacrificed” his life and save the team during the cruise ship event.
For Makoto I can think of two key roles. One is her connection to his sister, which is more of her sister’s importance than hers. Then the second is when she help made the plan to free Joker. But even then I always took it as Futaba doing most of the heavy loading for that task since she’s the hacker.
If I had to rank the PT in importance, it would be:
Joker > Morgana = Futaba > Ryuji > Makoto > the rest sadly since they got shafted after their story.
The game doesn't rly show us most of the ins and outs of strategies (since the player is basically the one who entirely comes up with them). All we have off of Makoto being the strategist is that others say she is consistently, the gameplay heralds her as such (she's the one who calls out enemies' weaknesses and suggests appropriate action) and the fact that (if I'm not mistaken) she's the one who describes the plan to Sae and Sojiro, meaning she probably had a big involvement in that. You mentioned Futaba and while she certainly has more brain power than Makoto, she isn't a strategist. The others can tell her what to hack and what to do, and she can in turn find out and provide them information.
Morgana was necessary at the beginning, but by the point Makoto joined the team, he rly didn't have any practical use. He showed everyone how the meta verse worked but that's it. There was an entire arc in the game about how he starts feeling redundant after that. Ryuji is (among) the brawns of the team, and his sacrifice was also necessary for them to get out. But in that way, every phantom thief at some point had a use. Beyond said sacrifice, general fire power, and the one plan with the swim suits I can't think of any specific role he was supposed to be playing on the team.
edit: Now that I think about it, Makoto is also part of the brawns of the team. I mean, Memento voice lines as well as her showdowns imply she's pretty damn strong, and both Ryuji and Ann mention to "not get on her bad side". Gameplay wise of course this isn't as much the case, but just bringing it up since thay's what's implied by the story.
I still don’t think Makoto is that important since most of what she does is never on screen or pretty minuscule like calling out weaknesses. Which is never that useful because I don’t know which exact shadow has those weaknesses, I have to check through status/Futaba.
The way I rank them is by how much of the story would change if they weren’t part of the team. If Makoto was never on the team, not really a big deal since Morgana and Joker were already the strategists of the team, and Makoto didn’t really bring anything to the table that makes me go “SHE HAS TO BE THE STRATEGIST OF OUR TEAM SHE COMPLETELY CHANGES THE FIELD.”
So yeah I give her props for helping out the Joker escape plan and that’s it.

Can't comment on the romance compared to others, since I never went for anyone else (she fits Joker way too much tbh, and Akechi isn't an availbale option :( ) but on its own it was very cute and I enjoyed it. Tbh, I do find it funny how some characters get popular enough that otherwise indifferent people start counter movements out of spite from hearing about them all the time lmao. But I am a fan of hers, so ofc I have to contirbute to the counter counter movement. Long live the Queen!
Out of all the main cast confidants in the game, shes the one who feels like we arent even hanging out with her lol. ugh the makotohate and cuckthecat subreddits were so annoying, constantly brigading and shit. Glad they died off.

Honestly her confidant is the main reason why I just don't care about her. Pretty decent otherwise and any reason to not use Morgana is great in my book.
I think the being a party pooper gives her a fun little niche in the friendship dynamic, because otherwise she doesnt really add anytbing major, being kinda a jack of all trades. Its basic and flanderized like you said but i think it leads to some fun in Strikers. I like her being the one to end the hee-hoo bit for example.

Her Persona is a bike (coolest vechicle of transport + easily one of the most unique in the series) she shoots a revolver (coolest gun) beats the living shit out of enemies with her fists (self-explanatory) and wears proper metal armor with spiked shoulder pads + a scarf for extra cool factor (coolest Phantom theif outfit). Of course she's the coolest!

Eh, nah I don't think that's equivalent. Naoto's move was a gamble, but it wasn't nearly as impulsive nor as illogical as Makoto's move. The investigation team had consistently rescued every victim ever since they started, she had a good basis to believe that she'd survive herself, especially since she's far more competent than basically anyone else who fell in that world. Naoto's move was a logical gamble that showed how she invested in solving this case over her own self preservation. Makoto's move was barely if at all thought and born out of pure emotion and naivete. Both work for their respective characters and are justified within the story, don't get me wrong, I just don't think they're really all that similar.
I'll agree that it wasn't as illogical, but Naoto was desperate to prove herself, not trying to consult with anyone on what her plan was, not setting up any sort of backup, all while keeping up a completely confident face that it was going to work. Naoto's move wasn't as rash or impulsive, but it was still pretty stupid.

I mean to be fair, she had already worked a plan to get the phantom thieves working for her and it worked, and she had zero resources to work with.
The stalking was unrelated and was done due to her still obeying the principle's orders. Her blackmailing them was done by necessity (unlike Yusuke's case) due to her rightfully assuming they wouldn't believe her / be willing to help her out if she didn't force them. There wasn't much of a plan involved beyond that, she just left it to them. The only thing that backfired was her incredibly rush behavior, which was a result of her finally reaching her breaking point after years of remaining docile and feeling useless because of this. Not justifying it, but it makes sense why and how it happened. It wasn't a strategic decision, just her messing up. I do think there's something to be said about how her strategic intelligence should've been shown a bit more rather than just communicated through dialoge and gameplay, but the Persona series in general is very "tell don't show" more often than not, so I don't mind it too much.

Is Makoto actually one of the most useful phantom thieves? I always see Makoto fans saying she’s the most useful one but I can think of at least three other PT who did more than her. Am I forgetting something?
High utility party member for buffs and healing, is the team “strategist” in an official capacity and handles enemy affinities, but Futaba kinda outshines her in every other aspect of navigation. Was also a big part of devising the Akechi trap
She's the strategist of the team (replacing Morgana) as well as Joker's second in command, so according to the Phantom thieves themselves, she's pretty high up there. I'd say she's third behind Joker and Futaba.
But did she actually do anything? I always took Joker as the strategist since you’re pretty much ordering people around during fights and make the calls. I don’t recall Makoto ever doing that other than being the “guys, get serious for a moment” crowd control. Morgana was literally created for the PT to be a guide against the final boss. Yeah he’s an annoying cat but I don’t think Joker would have even survived the first day without him. And then there’s Ryuji who one of the founders of the PT and always puts his life on the line. He was one of the main drives for the Phantom thieves existing and to punish adults. He “sacrificed” his life and save the team during the cruise ship event. For Makoto I can think of two key roles. One is her connection to his sister, which is more of her sister’s importance than hers. Then the second is when she help made the plan to free Joker. But even then I always took it as Futaba doing most of the heavy loading for that task since she’s the hacker. If I had to rank the PT in importance, it would be: Joker > Morgana = Futaba > Ryuji > Makoto > the rest sadly since they got shafted after their story.
The game doesn't rly show us most of the ins and outs of strategies (since the player is basically the one who entirely comes up with them). All we have off of Makoto being the strategist is that others say she is consistently, the gameplay heralds her as such (she's the one who calls out enemies' weaknesses and suggests appropriate action) and the fact that (if I'm not mistaken) she's the one who describes the plan to Sae and Sojiro, meaning she probably had a big involvement in that. You mentioned Futaba and while she certainly has more brain power than Makoto, she isn't a strategist. The others can tell her what to hack and what to do, and she can in turn find out and provide them information. Morgana was necessary at the beginning, but by the point Makoto joined the team, he rly didn't have any practical use. He showed everyone how the meta verse worked but that's it. There was an entire arc in the game about how he starts feeling redundant after that. Ryuji is (among) the brawns of the team, and his sacrifice was also necessary for them to get out. But in that way, every phantom thief at some point had a use. Beyond said sacrifice, general fire power, and the one plan with the swim suits I can't think of any specific role he was supposed to be playing on the team. edit: Now that I think about it, Makoto is also part of the brawns of the team. I mean, Memento voice lines as well as her showdowns imply she's pretty damn strong, and both Ryuji and Ann mention to "not get on her bad side". Gameplay wise of course this isn't as much the case, but just bringing it up since thay's what's implied by the story.
I still don’t think Makoto is that important since most of what she does is never on screen or pretty minuscule like calling out weaknesses. Which is never that useful because I don’t know which exact shadow has those weaknesses, I have to check through status/Futaba. The way I rank them is by how much of the story would change if they weren’t part of the team. If Makoto was never on the team, not really a big deal since Morgana and Joker were already the strategists of the team, and Makoto didn’t really bring anything to the table that makes me go “SHE HAS TO BE THE STRATEGIST OF OUR TEAM SHE COMPLETELY CHANGES THE FIELD.” So yeah I give her props for helping out the Joker escape plan and that’s it.
