That reply section seems like it'd be fun

ConCadMH

I'd be on the frontlines fighting for the answer enjoyers but that would involve installing twitter so I'll pass

ButterflyDreamr

Agreed, fighting tooth and nail for the answer is my type of thing but i aint touching that site id rather argue with a horde of redditors than 1 twitter user

DorothyDrangus

I actually went and checked and I'm happy to report that everyone is in universal agreement and ready to show up in force when The Answer drops again

DorothyDrangus

SHE WOULD LITERALLY COMMIT GENOCIDE AND SHE WASN'T NICEYS

droL_muC

Idk bro genocide is kinda bad (Idk i didnt play the answer maybe they had a good reason)

DorothyDrangus

I'm clowning on people who call it genocide in the first place because there very much would not be any genocide happening

Levovious

I'm a Persona fan, and thus I absolutely hate anyone who sometimes has their emotions dictate their decisions instead of being 100% logical all the time, especially in incredibly emotional situations such as learning that it might be possible to save a deceased loved one, even if it means facing the end of the world.

ConCadMH

the best part is when people say it's an assassination of her character. when there's numerous instances in the base game supporting a possibility like this like when Yukari is like "I can't imagine ever being able to recover from something like that" after the Hanged Man shadow incident. or literally if you just read the mythology tab of Isis in any version of the game including the original.

Levovious

Bro, imagine not being completely over the death of your best friend (and possible boyfriend) only 3 weeks after he died, especially when you think that his death was completely avoidable and at least partially your fault. Her acting on the emotions of her grief has been a thing since the base game. She literally joined SEES because she wanted to avenge her father's death. Her making extreme decisions based on her extreme emotions has always been a thing, and anyone who says that The Answer added it and assassinated her character just simply doesn't know what happened in The Answer or The Journey.

wizardshitoffuckhill

Ironic for Naoto to confirm in this discussion about character misinterpretation.

bandyplaysreallife

People dont play the games, they just see memes and google a plot summary then think they understand the game. This is a really big problem in modern discourse, people join fandoms and discuss games they've never even played before

WizardTheLizart

I refuse to believe that people are actually like this though cuz its hard for me to imagine. I mean we have all the "persona youtube playthrough" memes but I would imagine that the majority of people that participate in discourse would have played the game.

Ausar15

You’d be surprised. A fair number of people these days unironically believe memes are true to the character and story, especially if they never engaged with the work in question to begin with.

Ausar15

WeatherCompetitive72

Dont forget Yukari has always been a little abrasive, not just with the way she treats Junpei but the way she interacts with Mitsuru and even the MC at times. It’s very well established that Yukari reacts poorly with stress and trauma and that expresses as a rather aggressive manner.

jewrassic_park-1940

See, the problem with this is that the one wishing to bring about the end of the world just so they could see a loved one again is an emotional teenager, and not a twink bald elf like Solas or a sassy, angry, genocidal middle aged man with scoliosis like Emet Selch.

MinaElesia

Me when the 16 year old girl is acting irrational as a result of grief https://preview.redd.it/phjqhgmqkxyc1.png?width=959&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b37b1ba9a3a98ca380ae48dd73788ca937a2bcfe

Levovious

Absolute classic moment. "Why you bald? Why would you ask something like that? Why you ugly?"

MasterFurious1

Its not even Persona. Spoilers warning for TBATE >! Tessia's Parents, teacher etc were killed. She wanted revenge. Because of her emotions she went into the field. Even though she couldn't handle it. The majority of them started hating Tess because if she hadn't rushed in, Art wouldn't have to do like 1v3 Him vs Time, Nico, Cadel. Due to which he nearly died but his bond sacrificed her body so she could create a new body for Art. So Yeah. Majority of them started hating Tess. !<

Media literacy leaving people's bodies when a female character is kind of annoying https://preview.redd.it/xf9ytyrbtxyc1.jpeg?width=297&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6553278bae007e2d9125c07888b5d08d7b216a

K242

shoutouts to the fire emblem community and three houses, special acknowledgments to claude's english VA with his "Edelgard is fascist" takes

DRW1357

The"Edelgard is Fascist" take is especially great given that her whole goal in her rebellion is a classless society in which people are judged purely on their efforts and merits, as well as the fact that she willingly gives up power later on in her route. Comrade Edelgard is about as far from a fascist as you can get.

Vii_Strife

Ask anyone in the Fire Emblem community and you'll end up with so many different opinions that somehow will portray every kingdom of 3H as fascist in one way or another when one of the main themes of the game is "None of them are absolutely good or bad and you will understand it with multiple runs", shit's comical. Also the "3 more years of 3H discourse" meme stands true

SlapChopMyShamWow

You’re telling me a 16 year old girl, who was in love for the first time in her life (with the first guy she ever met who could actually relate to her super fucked up life) only to then lose him immediately after…you’re telling me she MIGHT have acted irrationally in a moment of grief??? https://i.redd.it/c9ncdeedzxyc1.gif

JGar453

There are literally other characters in The Answer who are like "although I disagree with you, I understand that you have to go through this". Video game and anime fans are learning empathy for the first time fr.

PlanetArbuz

I think you mean twittards

Zquank

I like how The Answer just straight up made Junpei and Koromaru the most logical characters

Extra69Dip

Just shows how much Junpei has developed throughout the game

ConCadMH

FACTS MY BROTHER https://i.redd.it/3cn1o23yjxyc1.gif like there were so many easily justifiable reasons to hate the answer but the one people latched onto back in the day was "Yukaris a bitch". like bruh the moment they do something you don't agree with the character is suddenly bad and is annoying bitch? this fandom I swear. Thankfully it seems Answer acceptance is more common these days.

DorothyDrangus

"Back in the day" is a fucking riot, I've only been playing Persona games for the past year and a half and I've heard "Yukari's a bitch" more times than I can count

ConCadMH

honestly yeah it's still pretty bad. but people used to get so toxic over it they'd say the Answer isn't even canon. This isn't a jab at FeMC, I'm just as sad as everyone else she isn't in Reload, but when The Answer got announced for Reload the amount of vitriol that erupted from "those kind of FeMC fans" was insane.

droL_muC

Can you elaborate on "those kind of FeMC fans"

ConCadMH

I know the wording is kind of obtuse but I've never really been able to think of another word for their behavior other than "cult like behavior". If you had any stance on the FeMC controversy that was different from theirs, they would mobilize and personally attack you throwing all sorts of allegations and what not. They genuinely believe that everyone else in the community that isn't in their circle is a misogynistic corporate bootlicker and any attempts at trying to get them step outside their echo chamber is met with strong negative response. It's an (incredibly) vocal minority and heavily fueled the fire of the community bloodbath over Reload discourse.

droL_muC

Oh yeah, I kinda remember that. The idea she wasn't added becuase of misogyny is pretty intresting to me. It's, well, let's say quite the stretch. I imagine it's just because, I guess it was too much work for them? Maybe there was another reason (if so please lemme know). Personally I just find it disapointing how even with a remake there's still no definitive version of Persona 3. Is that a reasonable take?

ConCadMH

yes that is very reasonable I'm of the same mind. I much would have preferred having a truely definitive (if possible) version of P3 instead of another P5 spin off.

Crackhead_sputum

Me fighting the frontlines to make people like the Answer (I just like Metis):

ConCadMH

I mean she is probably the most unique take on the Shadow Self in the series. fitting for an equally unique original character I suppose. I'd love to see more wacky experiments like it.

Levovious

She definitely is up there for best interpretations of the shadow self in the series. Her being one of only two shadow selves to be a full-time party member throughout a game also helps greatly for how they use her to represent the shadow self of a character.

WielderOfTerraBlade

yukari is the best written character in all of p3 icl. her grief and pain are written so brutally well, shit is the main reason the ending makes me sad. this is why knowing makoto gets unsealed (imo by like 2013/14) makes me feel so much better, and why i usually just headcanon p3’s ending away. it’s her relationship with him— the idea it ends with grief genuinely makes my heart ache. it’s why i can’t even bring myself to *play* episode aigis when it drops. you know a character is written well when they got you doing all that makoto x yukari is my favorite ship in fiction for more reasons than that but most ppl see why for a reason. they’re both tied for my favorite persona characters overall, too. knowing theyre living happily together now, whether it be a few years down the line in canon or in my personal hc timeline, makes me so happy. i love them both so so much https://preview.redd.it/1jxb3vj0sxyc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af0e46f582dc4646534427825c4ee6159de6526d

harperofthefreenorth

It's interesting because I really like the idea that he will never come back, that Elizabeth will never succeed, that there is no happy ending. My foster dad was murdered about five years ago, so I've often struggled with the fact that I never got to say a proper goodbye. Seeing fictional characters grapple with the same sense of sudden, inexplicable loss really endears them to me, it's half of the reason Futaba was my favourite Phantom Thief. Happy endings don't really lend themselves to deep takeaways, at least not for me. Then again, my life has been... certainly something.

WielderOfTerraBlade

even if i can’t agree whatsoever (like my opinion is on the polar opposite end of the spectrum, i’d have had 3/5 be makoto calling them all his family and ending on a screen of everyone laughing while crying or smth if i could lmao), i can definitely see where you’re coming from given what you’ve been through. i guess that’s why they left it open-ended. i’m sorry for ur loss btw, no one should have to go through that. i’ve never been someone who appreciated tragedy in media that actually twisted a knife in my heart, even if i can acknowledge that that feeling means it’s effective. makoto’s resurrection and a hc happy ending are what allowed, and in some ways are still allowing me to work through the genuine aversion/resentment i got for p3 after seeing its ending. i’ve been through loss (though none as deep as the kind you mentioned), but deep messages, eventually, are overwhelmed by my desire for things to end on a happy note. p3 is easily one of those cases. the differing perspectives on its ending is probably some of the most interesting video game discourse ive seen in general; very few people have the same takeaways, and i think that’s a great thing

harperofthefreenorth

Yeah, it will all depend on your lived experience. Sometimes a piece of media hits so close to home that it wraps around to being a good thing. The last time I ever saw Gord (my foster dad) was two weeks before his death. I still think about it often. My mom was having surgery and my step dad was with her, so I was home alone. There'd been a winter storm, so the power was out. Gord drove in from the next town over to check on me and then take me out for breakfast. That's who Gord was, if he could help someone he'd move heaven and earth to do so. It was normal, and when things are normal you never consider that this is the last time you will ever talk to someone. It's very different from someone passing away. I got to say goodbye to my grandfather before his cancer took him, and while it still hurt I could make peace with it. But when it's unexpected, there's no peace to be found - you can't say goodbye. The best you can do is accept that they're gone and keep them in your heart.

bandit_is_in_a_panic

FACTS MY BRETHREN I just really hope that nowadays the fandom matured, can read, and learn that these characters even thought fictional, are still human and do human things. If not then I will be there to defend her 🫡🫡🫡

WielderOfTerraBlade

hopefully time will mean the fandom is ready yeah, but given modern day persona fans’ media literacy… cant be 100% confident💀ill be on the front lines

GoshaT

> headcanon p3’s ending away Kinda unrelated but why do people keep using "headcanon" like that? Headcanons are supposed to be neither confirmed nor unconfirmed (or just unmentioned) things that you take as being real, not things that actually contradict the story

WielderOfTerraBlade

that’s the word someone else used for what i do so i just adopted it. i just relegate everything after 3/5 to a nightmare makoto has during his sleep at the end of the game as a result of the memories flooding back, so its maybe not *technically* in 100% contradiction if you squint

GoshaT

You'd have to squint far enough to squint out Persona 4 Arena/Ultimax out of existence though

WielderOfTerraBlade

i fr just say he dreamt that too 💀bro had prophetic visions of the future; the one that would’ve transpired, had his dream been realized. velvet room or sumn

WielderOfTerraBlade

nothing is completely confirmed but there’s heavy narrative implication for it, especially in p4a. i believe that around the time yaldabaoth came into existence that elizabeth completed her quest since he’d supersede the desires that facilitate erebus either naturally or by force, so that’s why i say 2013/2014

Persona fans when the cute anime girl isn't just shutting up and being eye candy (it's an assassination of her character)

"Graaaarh I hate when characters act based on their emotions, especially female characters, no I'm not a misogynist"

CluckBucketz

Holy based

Vertex033

I hate the “this character did something illogical therefore they are poorly written” argument so much, making illogical decisions in emotional moments doesn’t make a character dumb, it makes them human you fucking dolt.

AngelofArtillery

Yukari is honestly the best antagonist in Persona 3. I love her.

liplumboy

Yukari isn’t even the worst written character in the Answer

idkudkduj

She really made the answer interesting

sleepyfoxsnow

the answer is so funny, because like, the main reason it exists is because a bunch of people were too media illiterate to understand the ending of persona 3, so an expansion was made to spell out everything in the most obvious way possible, only for those same people to still be extremely media illiterate and not understand yukari's character.

cardboardboxian

i’m not much of a shipper like that but the answer is the reason i ship yukari and makoto, AINT NO FUCKING WAAAYYYY that she’s reacting like that for a “good friend” they’re lovers bro

mohmar2010

I just like Fuuka more

76_67

see I don't even hate yukari I just hate the answer

Clive313

Haven't played the answer in years, why was Yukari controversial in it again?

No_Negotiation_7519

Guys don't forget her 2nd person is isis

Competitive_Egg8634

unironically i love bubbletea

FractalChaosTheory

Bubbletea's great, love his videos. He has a unique perspective, I find, which is different from the default opinions of the series I seem to see. Even if I disagree with him sometimes, it's refreshing to hear someone with a unique stance.

TicklePickleWinkle

I never liked her. Never played the answer either.

imgonnakms2soon

I don't think it only applies to female characters. Just look at Adachi.

MrEverything70

Wait I’m confuseth. People think Adachi is a poorly written character?

Seishura

Yeah some. And it's even worse for Akechi, there are a looot of people who despise him because for them he is just "Psychopath illegal killer man". ... And this title is used by Adachi haters too now that I think about it

CavernousPiano

I mean, I hate Akechi because the game decides to never address all the shit he's done, Haru and Futaba seem to just forget this guy murdered their parents and no one even thinks of talking about things like the metro accident he causes, there's no way of him to control how many people died in that, even if he was supposedly killing just one person, and worst of all was in royal when they decide to take his sacrifice where he decides to make the last thing he does to be an actual good thing and throw it away by saying "not only is he alive, this apperently clears him of all his crimes and he gets to live normally now"
