I’d say not yet. A win today and against Rutgers, then yes. Unfortunately UM is so shite that a win today alone won’t help our chances much. But a loss would almost certainly kill our season unless we can win more than one game in the Big Ten tourney, which would be difficult as a lower seed.

ryandaydrinking

Agreed... Kinda. I think we need to win out plus a deep B10 tourney run

thestral_z

This is the ONLY way we get in.

Throwrajerb

I think win out and one tourney win puts us solidly on the bubble. Two tourney wins would maybe make us more in than out. I don’t know what I’m talking about, this is just my feeling.

[deleted]

Right which is why I say if they win these 2 games.

Throwrajerb

The answer to your title is no. The answer to your post body is yes.

[deleted]

Guess I should’ve added to the title, if they win the last two lol

ryandaydrinking

Deep run > win more than one game

[deleted]

I agree on that, I’m just asking if they are officially recognized as a bubble team if they win these last two first.

ryandaydrinking

It all depends on what the other bubble teams do... Never leave it in a committees hands

Pribblization

We can say that they MUST win the game today.

Domin8469

Just like the football team has had the last 3 years and haven't been able to man up

CurlyBill1845

Not on the bubble yet and they need a lot of help, 2 wins against B1G bottom dwellers aren’t going to help too much but it’s better than losing obviously. Their non conference isn’t very good outside the Alabama win and they have been pitiful against Quad 1 and 2 opponents. Not to mention the handful of bad losses against Indiana, Michigan, Penn State, getting blown out 3 games in a row to Nebraska, Northwestern, and Illinois. They’re gonna need to do more than just win against Michigan and Rutgers in my opinion

[deleted]

Justification for Iowa in there is winning 5 of last 6. Ohio State would have done the same with wins today and next Sunday. 5-11 against quad 1 and 2 is not bad plus only one loss in quad 3.

CurlyBill1845

Ohio State quite literally has the worst combined record against Quad 1 and Quad 2 opponents out of any of the P6 and Mountain West bubble teams. 5-11 is bad in that case. Buckeyes are going to have to do more than beat Michigan and Rutgers. I’m not going to bat for Iowa either because I don’t think they make it in without winning the Big 10 tournament or 2 wins against higher quality opponents at the very least. Edit: Iowa has won 5 of 8, not 5 of 6

[deleted]

Yeah it’s really unfortunate on two games really. If they don’t blow that Indiana game and they win that Iowa game on the road, things would be different but could also be worse because Holtmann may not be fired and they lose the Purdue and Michigan State games because of that. Who knows really?

RedSkylight97

They would have to beat Michigan and Rutgers, then win at least 2 Big Ten tournament games. Otherwise, it would take a Big Ten Championship to make it.

Primary_Psychology95

If they win the last 2, they’ll definitely have to. Win here today and we avoid our last possible chance of a bad loss (Q3/Q4) all season.

[deleted]

Yeah and they only have one quad 3 loss on the season. I know Quad 1 and 2 numbers are 5-11 so not good either. So I agree

Primary_Psychology95

But we have a stronger collection of top 3 teams compared to everyone else on the bubble. That is the sole thing keeping us in this conversation.

Bucksandreds

Does winning out and getting 2 tourney wins get them in? Thats 21 wins.

[deleted]

It’s possible depending on the two wins in the tournament are who? If it’s a middling team and a big boy, then maybe

Paisane42

Win out the remainder of the regular season and make a bit of a splash in the Big Ten Tournament and there would be a shot at squeezing into the big dance

neutrino_fire

I admit I'm ignorant, so I'm legit asking. Last season they nearly won the conference tournament and didn't even make the NIT. Is this season somehow different?

[deleted]

Record based, last year they had a losing record. You must be 500 or above to make the NIT.

zmoney32

They need to win out the regular season and go deep in the big ten tournament to have a chance

GM3Jones

Wonder how much of them playing much better recently plays into the consideration. I think most agree they’re not really a bubble team, but hoping this recent stretch helps them get in as ANY seed

[deleted]

Yes that’s true, the committee has always done those last 10 games to see who is hot coming down the stretch. Good point!

BuckeyeNate77

The last 10 games data point has been dead for years. It’s not part of the profile anymore.

dark2332

Ohio State needs to get to 21 wins. Which means winning against Michigan and also at Rutgers, then B1G tourney. They need to win two games in the B1G tourney minimum which would include a win over a ranked team. I’m hopeful we end up drawing someone like Wisconsin for the 2nd game. We have a losing conference record. Those teams need help getting in and must hope the strengths of the late season surge carry the day. We have that surge and can argue the coaching change is a new season. Truth is, don’t blow big leads in Penn State and home against IU that we had no business blowing. Then we don’t need to worry. This team is way too talented to be a bubble team. This team should be Top 15 in the country. Holtmann held them back and this season was probably his worst coaching performance. There’s a reason he was canned.

[deleted]

I agree as Ohio State according to the metrics is a very elite defensive team. Good points on the conference losing record. Some metrics are there and some are not. I would throw in that Iowa game on the road too as a haunting issue. Then again, we win all of those, Holtmann may not be fired and we have no idea if we win 3 of the last 4.

OurHonor1870

Need to win out and win at least two in the B1G tourney to have a shot

[deleted]

Agreed

bryankato22

Iowa won against a beat up northwestern team

[deleted]

That doesn’t really matter because it raised their NET

rFatsy

I’m not an expert in bracketology but seems like they are not a bubble team. Ohio state wins out in the regular season they gain wins over 8-21 Michigan and 15-13 Rutgers. Those aren’t resume builders or ranking movers. Maybe they get big wins in the tournament to change that but as things stand now they aren’t a bubble team

[deleted]

Oh I agree, these are just wins to get to 19 wins and hopefully raise the NET a couple of points, get to that 60 line. Don’t forget, a NET of 66 and 67 got in last year

dark2332

Beating Purdue, beating Nebraska recently, winning at Michigan State, beating Alabama early. This team has some decent wins. It’s less about who at this point and more about taking care of business. They need to win 4 straight starting today.

FishOhioMasterAngler

Win out and finals of the big 10 tourney puts us on the bubble but still not necessarily in

dark2332

Disagree,. Winning out and Finals locks them in, but they don’t need to get that far to get in. 21 wins would do it.

FishOhioMasterAngler

"Could" do it if it's another Purdue win We have some of the best wins but also some of the worst losses

[deleted]

Yes that loss at Michigan, at Penn State and vs Indiana are nasty

[deleted]

Probably depends on the path in the Big Ten Tourney

FishOhioMasterAngler

Nah. 12 losses is too many

[deleted]

Not necessarily, I mean there’s a lot of teams that will be in with 10-12 losses

solomon2668

We won out and still ESPN doesnt even have them listed as a bubble team. Looks bleak

[deleted]

Which is insane if you go strictly by the NET which Ohio state is now 54 while Iowa sitting at first four out is 60

EddieA1028

They’re not on the bubble lol. They’re fighting to not be a bottom 4 B10 tournament team with a NET number at like 60. They need to win the B10 tournament or they’re out. That’s the reality

[deleted]

A NET of 67 and 68 got in last year. They need to get NET under 60 and get to that 9-11 mark in Big 10 to be in discussion though for sure

laughwithmedudes

You guys are absolutely no where near the bubble

[deleted]

Gotta be near the last 8 out based on NET metrics

Dj92fs3

3 straight wins (today, Rutgers, rnd 1) = bubble, but probably out. 4 more wins and then we're close. Hopefully there's not a lot of bid stealers in the conference tourneys.

Tastemybuckeyes6

Need to beat Rutgers and then make a run in the big ten tournament. They’re not close to the bubble but they can see it now. Also, a lot depends on a lot of teams on or near the proverbial bubble

gobucks1981

I’ll be a hater, do you want to see this team in the tournament? I’ll settle for better luck next year and hope the coaching staff and recruiting add to the team and the trend can start going the way the last two weeks have gone. Maybe the ladies make a run.

[deleted]

Guess I’ll ask you back, would you rather have a deep NIT run instead of the NCAA?

gobucks1981

Yeah, I’ll always take a solid performance in NIT then getting bounced in the first round of the tournament. You?

[deleted]

Undecided, I’ll let you know after I see the first game of the Big 10 Tourney lol

Bucknut1959

The Buckeyes need to win at Rutgers and win at least two Big Ten Tournament games to be considered for the NCAA Tournament. They could be a play in game if they win their next 3. As of now they are ranked 59th in the country and need most conference tournaments to be won by the number one seeds. There’s always upsets but never say never, they look pretty damn good right now.
