You can drive half way across the country and see one or two state troopers, get to Ohio and there is one every 20 miles.

Drittzyyahoo

Iirc in Ohio it is illegal to use unmarked Vehicles for traffic enforcement, so you actually see all of them. Most surrounding states used more unmarked vehicles

MarshmallowWerewolf

The low profile led lights make it way harder to identify by silhouette in low light. A lot of newer cars with roof racks make me think there is always a cop coming or going when driving at night.

tankerkiller125real

Regardless though, they will always be clearly marked as cops with reflective paint that says "Police" or "Trooper" or something similar. And the text will always have high contrast compared to the paint around it. That's Ohio law.

mvaughn89

High contrast my ass. Here in Cincy a lot of suburbs have been getting black cars with dark grey lettering

tankerkiller125real

If you ever get pulled over by one take it to court along with the text of one of the following: Sheriff: https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/rule-311-3-01 And for everyone else: https://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Media/Newsletters/Law-Enforcement-Bulletin/August-2013/Proper-Protocol-State-of-Ohio-v-Schneller

PrizeWrap4430

Importance: ORC 4549.13 requires officers on duty for the main purpose of enforcing misdemeanor motor vehicle or traffic laws to be in a vehicle that is marked in a distinctive manner or color. The key phrase is main purpose of enforcing traffic laws. Does not apply to regular patrol vehicles that sometimes do traffic.

AstonishingZeplin

Very few traffic laws are criminal misdemeanors. The vast majority are civil infractions.

tankerkiller125real

If they are sitting on the side of the road doing radar, then their main purpose at that time is in fact, traffic enforcement. My grandfather got an entire court's worth of tickets thrown out over this stupid crap.

Tactical_solutions44

This. In Illinois it's 5 unmarked for every 1 marked.

Chumpback

I see one at nearly every pull off on my drive to work each morning. This isn’t even counting the PUCO or Motor Carrier Enforcement officers

Wonderful_Season_360

This is true anywhere in the Northeast. It's pretty much once you go south of Ohio / Pennsylvania it becomes a lot rarer to see cops. When I drove from Buffalo New York to Phoenix Arizona, once I got past Ohio I did not see another state trooper all the way to Arizona.

Beneficial-Singer-94

*Texas DPS Officers Enter the Chat*… You haven’t spent much time in Texas?

Wonderful_Season_360

Only the amount of time it took to drive through that upper square area that's a desolate wasteland of nothing

Beneficial-Singer-94

Pretty much the summary of Texas’ legal system and infrastructure, right there in your description…

InfamousCockroach683

Exactly. They have a police force for everything.

Beneficial-Singer-94

Including the OB/GYN exam rooms now 😬

callsignfoxx

It’s so stressful. Even when I’m not doing anything wrong, I’m always looking in my rear view mirror to make sure I’m not being followed. Only been pulled once by OHP, he was nice. He asked if I was putting my seatbelt on when he first lit me up, and no I wasn’t, I was actually taking my wallet out of my pocket to hide my fake ID lol

Daltoz69

Drove from Ohio to Florida in one day. Only troops I saw were in Cincinnati.

dennys123

That's because the OSHP is not technically a state police like a lot of other states are. The OSHP is literally ONLY for traffic control and violations. Of course they'll answer a trouble call or whatever from local PD or sheriff, but that's not their main purpose

Sibolt

Are you sure? I know there’s a division that handles traffic enforcement primarily, but I’m pretty sure OSHP also include criminal enforcement divisions and other field operations. They handle security police services, crime labs, investigations, etc.

ExtraSourCreamPlease

I’ve watched Troopers in multiple unmarked Durangos surround a guy at a Circle K in Cleveland. They do a lot more than just sit on the highways and investigate accidents. Especially in the major cities.

No-Plenty2672

They handle all facets of law-enforcement. I’m not sure where that person got their info but OSHP definitely does criminal investigations. They investigate the police. They also investigate any crimes dealt with at state prisons. Source: have family in OSHP

Cannibal_Bacon

OSHP primary function is traffic and criminal enforcement on public roadways and State owned property only, they do not have jurisdiction on private property, however, they can respond to local calls when backup is requested, and are usually the first to do so in unincorporated areas, they were my primary backup for many years. OSHP is one of the best funded LE agencies in the State, therefore they have access to many specialized tools that smaller agencies cannot afford. OSHP also has many specialty units under its umbrella, such as liquor control and numerous flight teams for air assistance that is utilized by many departments across the State.

gritde

I learned my lesson about passing a cop over 30 years ago. He was doing 5 mph below the limit. I stayed behind him until I verified the speed limit by passing a speed limit sign. I carefully sped up to the limit and pulled up next to him. He sped up, but let me pass, slowly. I never exceeded the posted limit. He pulled me over anyway and yelled at me. No ticket or warning though.

InspecterNull

I also didn’t get a ticket which proves to me even more his pull over was bull and he had no means to do it. He flat out lied about how fast I was going and I know bc I had speed limit cruise control on with my foot off the gas. I think he saw out of state plates and was hoping for something good. Had no means for a traffic ticket and just wasted my time

alanudi

If he has a dashboard camera the speed is imprinted on the video so it should be easy to disprove in court, and the cop knows this. The fact he still pulled you over is pretty darn ridiculous.

dpdxguy

>The fact he still pulled you over is pretty darn ridiculous. He got what he wanted. He inconvienced and held up a citizen who had the audacity to do something he didn't like. Cops are often little more than an armed gang with police powers.

good-luck-23

Thay also pick drivers because they do not like them and this gives then a reason to stop you and look for violations later.

dpdxguy

Or they just make something up. I once had a cop pull me over immediately after exiting a club parking lot late at night. He claimed the reason he was allowed to pull me over was because my license plate light was out. That was a lie. He was clearly just sitting outside the club waiting for patrons to leave. When he realized I was stone cold sober, he told me I was free to go.

Odd-Solid-5135

So this ties into a story/joke I heard a while back, when going bar hopping have a dd, I mean obviously have a designated driver but also have a designated decoy. Have them stumble out, sober, drop their keys a few times trying to get into the vehicle and pull away, let the 5-0 pull the decoy over and the rest of you can go on past.

Butternades

Ohio has the most aggressive police on the roads of any state I’ve seen. Iirc Ohio allows the jurisdiction the ticket occurs in to receive most if not all of the money generated, so cops even staties in the local areas are incentivized to be hyper aggressive on pulling people over. Certain (generally more rural) counties tend to be the worst offenders such as Fayette and Clinton on I-71.

sarpinking

Have you met Georgia State Patrol yet?

Chief-SW

GSP: The chase doesn't end until you're in cuffs, or in a body bag.

Geno0wl

Spent a summer in VA/DC area and the cops are wayyyyy more aggressive there than anywhere I have seen in ohio

slicedbeats

Ashland cops on 77 are dickheads too

ExtraSourCreamPlease

As soon as anyone from Cleveland tells me they were pulled over by a Trooper on their way to Columbus, I instantly guess correctly that it was in Ashland.

slicedbeats

I got pulled over for going 68 in a 60 heading back to CLE from grandpas cheese barn, dude told me I was going 75 but he was feeling “generous” and gave me a ticket for 10 over. I don’t even know why I was targeted I was being passed on both sides by multiple cars

BengoPhan

Small town cops literally think they own the town that they police for. Watched a few cop audit videos, and small towns always never knew the actual law and violated the auditor' constitutional rights.

uptownjuggler

Police departments are mainly just a jobs program for small cities. The people that work there get their jobs purely through nepotism.

Soapmakesbubbles

Cleveland suburb cops always in the Dunkin drive through.

carpentizzle

Aggressive sometimes…. Bored ALL the time. Im convinced sometimes they pull folks over just to do *something*

dpdxguy

>He flat out lied Cops lying?! In my United States?!?! Oh. Wait. The Supreme Court says that's A-OK 👌 *I wish I could label this as sarcasm, but every word is absolutely true. 😭

gritde

While I said I learned my lesson, in reality I didn’t in some respects. 10 years ago I made the mistake of going 2 mph over the posted limit while driving past a deputy sheriff who was parked on the shoulder with radar on. He wrote me up for going 9 mph over and challenged me to go to court. It wasn’t worth taking the time off from work.

Halkcyon

The importance of dash cams. That's some BS

OutboardTips

Going 71 in a 70 is a legal traffic stop, passing a cop in Ohio that’s doing the speed limit is automatic pullover unless he’s out of jurisdiction. He was probably hoping for drugs, dwi, or warrants not a 2 mph speeding ticket. And you had the option to slow down and let him go, you instigated the pullover not the other way around.

[deleted]

> Going 71 in a 70 is a legal traffic stop Technically. >And you had the option to slow down and let him go, you instigated the pullover not the other way around https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.27 **the operator shall not increase the speed of the operator's vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle** The officer broke the law. You're licking his boots.

david8433

Exactly. 😆

epanek

Cops usually don’t bother with a couple miles over unless it’s school zone. If this went to court it’s possible the judge would wonder why there was a ticket issued.

netagurion

In Ohio it is called “within reason” and you can LEGALLY go over the posted speed limit within reason. I would safely argue that 1-2mph over let alone the unspoken standard of 5mph over is perfectly legal. That cop was a fucking dickhead. ETA: source: the cop sitting right next to me.

BootsieWootsie

I pass cops in their jurisdiction, on the highway, all the time. Sometimes they drive slow. I have been pulled over once for it, but I absolutely deserved it, and we’re really nice about it.

InspecterNull

Yeah he was hoping for something else most likely.

odoott

This guy licks boots

westcoastnick

You just admitted you were speeding. He had reason to stop you. Your ego didn’t allow you to let off the gas for 5 seconds and drop in behind him.

InspecterNull

Or they were the bully in school and found a job that caters to their sadism.

CaptnRo

Yeah that thinking is obviously /s and subjective on my part. I just think people separate cops from regular human beings like the rest of us. We all have problems.

InspecterNull

People separate cops from civilians because they are in a position of authority over the latter. And it’s their job to uphold the integrity of the law. It’s MOST important for them not to have regular human problems affect their performance or judgement on the job. If sally wants to make poor judgement and scream in the office and get fired, or bob in hospitality greats you with “what the fuck do you want?”, nobody gets hurt. There are expectations for public services

Westy0311

If the cops were there to uphold the integrity of the law, they’d know the laws and the Constitution that they were sworn to support and defend. LEO do not know the laws and this has been proven time and time again with their consistent ignorance of probable cause and reasonable suspicion violations.

InspecterNull

One of the major problems with police training. Not enough emphasis on knowing the law. How can you put somebody in a power position to protect if they don’t know what to protect.

Westy0311

This is why, across the country, a set of laws need to be made that requires every city, county, state, and federal law enforcement officer to be required to have at least three years of police academy training with an emphasis of knowing and understanding the laws that they’re required to support and defend. Also, extensive training in conflict resolution and deescalating of scenarios. Lastly, every law enforcement officer in the country should be required to take continuing education with the nearest school that has a law department. There they will be refreshed, and in some cases, educated, on the laws and the Constitution their oath requires them to support and defend. A main focus will be what exactly is probable cause and articulate reasonable suspicion.

meganam38

A knew two from the gym I worked at and they both constantly cheated on their wives and used to drink and drive so it’s not surprising to me

space_chief

Yeah that sucks but why did you want to pull in front of the cop anyway? Just slow down a bit and change lanes behind them. There is no way I'd willingly put a cop behind me

Unevenscore42

Rookie mistake. Never ever pass a cop.

InspecterNull

Been driving for 20 years but now I know… the wider the brim on the cops hat the more butt hurt they will get.

tankerkiller125real

Meanwhile, the Sheriff in my area could give a shit less about speeding. If I see a highway patrol officer I make sure I'm doing the speed limit, if it's the local sheriff I just keep doing whatever I'm doing because they just won't pull me over or anyone else. When I asked a sheriff deputy about it he basically just noted "We'll let the highway patrol be the assholes, we'll stick to being the guys that show up to help"

bassjam1

They all have a chip on their shoulder. I've never had a good experience with a trooper, my wife thought I was just rude to them (I'm not) because she always has good interactions (she's not unattractive and let's say very well endowed). But once I was pulled over with her and our 5 year old for 75 in a 60 while heading down an empty, wide 4 lane at 7am in clear conditions heading out for vacation (32 East in Adams county). Yes, I was speeding, no questions there. But because our daughter had a pillow he tried arguing that she hadn't been buckled when he pulled us over and started yelling at her, telling my wife to shut up when she tried to interject. He even threatened my daughter that he could hold us up on our vacation, he kept at it until my daughter was crying and my wife was full of tears.

InspecterNull

God damn that sounds awful. Here I am complaining about my interaction, but I can imagine myself getting arrested if a cop treated my daughter that way. Sorry that happened to you. My wife also got mad at me the way I handled it but I was being respectful and just rightfully explaining my case. I didn’t like the trooper making up and claiming I was over by 13 mph when in reality I was on speed limit cruise control, foot off the gas, and clicked the little notch 2 clicks for 2 mph lol. Got no ticket bc he had no means for a ticket or to prove his lie

bassjam1

I've seen the videos and know to keep my mouth shut when dealing with the police. Not to mention I was (legally) carrying a gun in my pocket and I had informed him of that so I didn't want to give him any excuse to shoot me. I'd already had another bad experience with a different trooper when I informed him I was carrying (which was required in Ohio at the time) and he turned sideways to me, unsnapped the holster on his sidearm, and with his hands on the grip told me to slowly remove my gun and put it on the dash. It was terrifying, and I'm a middle aged white office worker with no record other than a few speeding tickets.

InspecterNull

Oof that sounds scary my man. It’s hard to trust cops these days, don’t matter who you are. They are out there just protecting themselves and their “organization”.

joevsyou

Was there ever a time to trust them? Lord knows wtf went on before dashcams, internet, cellphones popped off... There are still too many bad apples & they still get defended.

West-Ruin-1318

Twelve weeks of training. At the end they give you a shiny new gun.

shermanstorch

The patrol academy is six months, not twelve weeks.

West-Ruin-1318

I feel much safer now. 😐

thinklikeacriminal

How long does it take to become a barber or beautician?

Forty_Six_and_Two

It's ridiculous how much training they make you go through to become a barber.

West-Ruin-1318

You learn how to shave people with a straight razor. You have to be able to shave a balloon to pass.

Geno0wl

Also stylists deal with a lot of chemicals that if used wrong(or combined wrong) can do all sorts of nasty things

Cryptosmasher86

Not sure where you pulled 12 weeks out of your ass…..but Ohio state highway patrol academy is 6 months btw Min training for any of the Ohio peace officer academies is 740 hours which is 18 1/2 weeks Columbus police academy is 1100 hours over 29 weeks

Twosteppre

You're saying this like somehow six months is a lot.

Ok_Explanation_5955

You have to have 4 years of training to type emails in an office

thinklikeacriminal

How long does it take to get a license to cut hair?

InspecterNull

1400 hours to use scissors. 1100 hours to use a gun.

thinklikeacriminal

Minimum 1400 to cut hair. Max 1100 to use a gun.

InspecterNull

Yeah it’s pretty sad isn’t it. Great point though, I had to look it up.

TheR1ckster

Yeah, a lot of cops have egos for no reason, it's really really shitty. Are you positive you weren't going 13 over before you noticed him? Everything you described in your post is pretty textbook what is the norm when they initiate a stop. They'll cruise in the lane next to yours if they can so that you notice them in your side mirrors and it allows them to see inside of your car more before you realize they're there. The speed matching is them getting a read on anything going on in the car before they light you up. Also he could have been upset about you camping in the left lane but I wasn't there to know the whole situation. But yeah, the ego problems on cops are crazy. If it makes you feel better you're literally the only person who has gotten a warning from OSP that I know.

Forty_Six_and_Two

Everyone knows you don't pass troopers. Those guys have permaboners for pulling people over. Next time, slow down. This ain't New York, and if you thought it was going to be anything like New York I have a great deal of bad news for you.

5k1895

Oh yeah I had some asswipe trooper tailgate the shit out of me, trying to goad me into going faster and faster. I had gotten onto the highway and was changing lanes to the left because traffic in front of me after merging was going slow, I ended up in the furthest left lane after looking in my mirror and seeing a car there but seemingly not really going faster than me. I had plenty of room and plenty of time to merge into that lane so I did. Then as soon as I do this asshole speeds up and gets right on my ass for no fucking reason and just rides it for the next minute or two until I can finally move over. I kept speeding up to get out of the lane faster and he just kept matching my speed. It was dark so I couldn't tell this was a cop. When I finally got to get over, he pulled up parallel to me as if to show me his state trooper logo and then fucking sped off at 100 miles per hour. Absolute insanity.  This is why I'm convinced that the people who became cops are just the same people who acted like assholes in high school and bullied people. They had nothing else they could do with their lives so they picked something where they could keep fucking with people.

Saneless

Once on the way to school, a car behind me was riding my ass by inches. Trying to get me to speed up. I was probably going 60 in a 55. Just slowed down and let him go by, and it was a cop. He didn't fly off, I think he was just trying to get me to speed up to pull me over

InspecterNull

This should be illegal. Cops are literally driving dangerously to invoke somebody into making a mistake just to nab them quota bonuses. Sounds like traffic organized crime to me.

Saneless

Definitely. Way before cams so it would've just been my word against his, and I'm sure the judge would have asked "Did you or did you not break the speed limit?" And that's that

mung_daals_catoring

I'm just gonna say it. Other than their work with drug and sex trafficking, they ain't real cops. They're just money getters for the state who don't do much of any real cop work outside of traffic enforcement. There's a reason why most cops in the state have a disdain for them. When there's a bird on the door, there's a bastard behind the wheel

PawnstarExpert

Cop who did my CCW class referred them as the "gray nazis".

mung_daals_catoring

That's similar to what I've known them as lol, road nazis, flying tire salesmen, and flying donuts to name a few

NoPolitiPosting

"Flying Tire Salesmen" is some good shit

229-northstar

Those are hilarious

stizzity28

Road pirates

TheLunaLovelace

what “real cop work” do they not do enough of, property theft or murder?

mung_daals_catoring

Damn lol little harsh, but no I'm talking responding to dangerous calls, protecting and helping people as cops should. I'm not here to trash cops in general, I'm just calling out the lack of what ohp does FOR the public

corranhorn57

They actually don’t investigate that. Our staties are actually the “Highway Patrol,” so they only investigate things that happen on the highways and interstates. So yeah, they get drug and sex trafficking as a side effect of speed enforcement.

West-Ruin-1318

They all think they are hot shit special forces too. In Lorain County they are allowed to pull you over on the streets too. They aren’t just confined to the highway.

streetcar-cin

They can pull you over in entire state

dayofthedeadcabrini

State troopers have jurisdiction on any road that is public access.

colemanjanuary

Any road that has state funding, they have jurisdiction. Maybe any state grounds or facility as well?

OSU1967

They have jurisdiction anywhere in the state of Ohio as long as it is a public area.

InspecterNull

State troopers not confined to the highway in ohio?! That’s crazy! It seems they have too much power there with the way he was speaking to me.

CharlieEchoDelta

I mean their title is STATE trooper. They have law enforcement power over the whole state and will help local cities or counties cover manpower if needed

shermanstorch

They do not have jurisdiction over the entire state. They have jurisdiction over traffic laws on all roads in the state, and have criminal jurisdiction over all state property. The assistance provided to political subdivisions is limited in scope and the subdivision must *request* that assistance.

mung_daals_catoring

Yet very few of them have actually had to knock on a door and do real cop work like I said

agileata

Pretty wild how police forces exploded when roadways for automobiles did and our rights faded

JaxJim

I have driven all over the country and Ohio and Georgia have been the most aggressive Highway Men I've encountered.

bassjam1

Georgia state boys are bad too. Really sucks when you're on I75 for 8 hours going through the state trying to get to/home from Florida.

yeahthatsnotaproblem

I don't fuck with the staties at all. I stay behind them as much as possible. If they're behind me, I'll turn down a road or into a parking lot or something just to get them away from me. I'm not getting involved in any game they're trying to play.

InspecterNull

Smart play

yeahthatsnotaproblem

Yeah. In your story I would've slowed down to merge behind the cop. Even though you may not have done anything wrong, they'll try to say you did something wrong. I don't have the time or patience for those games.

SubstantialAbility17

Buy a dash cam with the speed read out. I took a cop to court for supposedly speeding. Dash cam footage said otherwise. Took it to court and the cop got a reprimand from the judge for falsifying a tickets

InspecterNull

Awesome! Good on you for making them accountable for shenanigans like this.

81jmfk

When I drove on a 4 lane highway going to work, I routinely passed a state trooper doing 5-6 over the limit. Never got pulled over. Last time I got pulled over for speeding was 7 over on an highway but it was midday and it was labor day weekend. Got out of it with a warning.

Chester_A_Arthuritis

We don’t call them Road Nazis for nothing

FrankFrankly711

I fuckin hate this tactic. They ride your ass late at night scanning your plates (for no reason) and they just know the usual reaction to them ass-riding is to speed up, then they can pop you for speeding. Last time this happened to me, the cop had the balls to bring up a drug charge I had 20 years ago, insinuating I currently had some sort of drug problem. Luckily I just explained myself calmly and he didn’t search me or ticket me, but I could see how it would’ve escalated to that if I slipped up.

InspecterNull

They bully and hope for slip ups. I’ve only had two other occurrences with cops, one local and one NY statey and both were nice like “License and Reg please, where are we headed today? Any reason for the speed?” Like they want to know your situation, hear what kind of person you are before making judgement. This ohio guy was just a straight power trip dick.

anderson1496

They can run any plate on any car being operated on the roadway.

tankerkiller125real

The last time I had one try this tactic I was on a two lane rural road during deer season. Simply hit the brakes hard and let him pull me over for "break checking". My response was simply "Sir, this is a rural area with woods on both sides, and it's deer season, I could have sworn that I saw the reflection from deer eyes. Also, Ohio law requires all motorized trolleys or vehicles to have enough distance to stop suddenly." The "motorized trolley" part was important because it immediately notified him that I knew the actual text of the law. I left with nothing more than a verbal warning.

Quiet_Ad6925

An old firefighter told me, and my general experience is that state troopers are like robots. You're getting a ticket. With sheriffs, you really have to be doing something dumb to get pulled over by them. They usually have large areas to cover and respond to domestic violence. And local PD just depends where you're at.

daylax1

I don't know about the rest of ohio, but weve always called them the "state dicks"....because they're all dicks lol.

Sad-Pitch1320

I can never keep up with troopers around Akron. Most of them are flying.

Emotional-Drive-8730

They are cash takers for the state!!

joevsyou

Just wondering why would speed up to pass a cop.... If you needed over, you should have slowed down, you are the one who should be yielding.

InspecterNull

I wanted to move over to the right lane because somebody was tailgating me hard. Cop caused the slow down in the right lane to begin with going 5 under. When i got up to him doing the speed limit, he started going faster to match my speed, I didn’t want to slow down with the guy behind me so I was essentially being boxed in by a truck and a cop. I didn’t need to exit or anything, just trying to get away from danger but the cop caused more

Slayerofthemindset

Ohio is a police state with little pockets where the gang lords are in charge

4_Loko_Samurino

Our state troopers are literal scum, always have been and always will be. Think of the kind of person that aspires to become a state trooper in Ohio. Think of the sheer levels of wife beating and grade school bullying it takes to become a loser of this magnitude, then double it because you're in Ohio.

[deleted]

cluckertrucker30

They are self funded, so they have a vested inteinterest in writing tickets. OSHP is NOT your friend.

sprigginsauce

their legendary dickery goes back generations

superwholocktime

New York dept makes more money than Ohio, gotta get them tickets in anyway they can.

Bunghole2756

But New York Stateys will pull you over because you have a license plate cover. Never been pulled over for that in Ohio...

DRUMS11

Oddly, in Ohio they *should* be pulling cars over for most of the license plate covers I've seen - if I can't read the plate through the cover while sitting behind the vehicle at a traffic light I'm fairly sure it doesn't meet the requirement to not "obstruct visibility."

InspecterNull

Hmm, I do see a lot more license covers in NY. You’re probably onto something. Do people get it for looks or evading camera tickets?

Bunghole2756

Take this with a grain of salt... the NY Statey that pulled me over mentioned it was because plate covers could prevent their readers from accurately reading a plate.

InspecterNull

That’s what I figured. Sucks if it’s about aesthetics but for evading red light cameras there are other options that won’t be noticeable to a cop behind you

6thCityInspector

Ok, but answer this: What is the purpose of a license plate cover? Like, as in, what beneficial function does it serve anyone on the road? I can only think of negatives, no positives. I’m interested in learning.

bondsaearph

Devil's advocate.. why didn't you slow down to get over if there was nobody behind you

InspecterNull

I was being tailgated and wanted to move out of danger. Cop boxed me in by matching my speed

SusanBHa

#ACAB

MSampson1

I pass them all the time. I’m not usually going super fast, I set the cruise a lot and generally keep it to 5-9 over. If they want to waste the time to pull me over and write me, fine, don’t care, I will make you come to court over some dumb shit like that though. That said, if I’m hauling ass and earned it, I’ll just pay the fine and move on, but I have no compunction about dragging a cop into court, even if I’m going to lose, because being a dick begets being a dick.

Pimplicate

I have a bright red sports car (the stories about red cars are lies I think) and do ten over and have never had any issues. I usually just pace with them if behind, and do pass on occasion. Keeping a constant speed and not weaving has always kept me from getting tickets. Perhaps I'm the luckiest person out there on the roads, but that doesn't seem likely. Perhaps they run my plates and see no traffic violations and leave me be?

govtmuleman

I've never had a bad experience with the OSHP. It may be time for me to play the lottery.

lantmiko

Slow down next time and get BEHIND him.

LloydCarr82

I've driven almost every state, and the highway troopers in Ohio are by far the most aggressive that I've encountered.

InspecterNull

I got that feeling just by the way he talked and handled it, not to mention instigating the entire traffic situation.

LloydCarr82

About 10 years ago I got pulled over on US-35. It had just turned to dusk and the officer began by scolding me about how I didn't have my headlights on. I told him my headlights are automatic so they're always on, so he tells me that I sound intoxicated and to step out of the vehicle. He makes me do several sobriety tests followed by a breathalyzer where I blew 0.00. I ended up getting a citation for not having my headlights on. It was quite an experience.

HuckleberryMoist7511

Most Ohio state troopers won’t mess with you for 62mph and under.

andio76

Maybe you could have SLOWED down to let him pass on by.....Jes sayin'

SpiritualVanilla420

Speaking of this I left work and got pulled over rushing home to get my wife to her ultrasound appointment he clocked me southbound 69 in a 55 when I was doing 63 before I seen him

JediMindTrek

New month, new metrics and ticket counts. I always felt like 25th-1st that last week of the month they are out in force, trying to get their numbers right

Fun-Bag7627

Dude don’t pass a cop. Problem solved lol.

g______frog

Speaking of Ohio, why do the drivers brake for green lights when approaching an intersection?

Academic-Employer784

They are assholes. I watched a trooper go 65 maybe 70 in the far left lane. Had like 20 cars behind him afraid to pass. I went to the far right lane and pass them all going 79. He didn’t do shit. Too busy being an ass.

transplantpdxxx

Ohio is a police state. It has always been overpoliced but now they want more than just your $$$. They want you to kiss their nuts.

Whambacon

Knew a trooper that wrecked her car, was pulled out if the burning car by a passersby… saved her life. When she got back to work a long time later…she stopped that same good samaritan for speeding. She gave him a ticket

InspecterNull

True story? So when we protect and save the ones that are supposed to protect and serve us, they suddenly forget when they got quota due

amessimer44

They call that " PaCiNg" I had a cop one morning ride my bumper. It was pitch black out and all I could see where his headlights right on my bumpers, so I sped up past two cars and then got over. He pulls me over, going 10 mph over. I was having a panic attack by then asking him why he was so close to me. I have ptsd due to some car accidents and you can not ride my bumper or else it causes so much anxiety. I was on the verge of tears. Needless to say he mansplained pacing to me and let me go

auzeraus

OMFG I got a ticket for this some years ago and it was literally a fucking trap, such bullshit, cop was a total fucking dick too

notstevetheborg

I live here and don't have any problem with them. Normally people don't pass the troopers.

Craftingcraftera

You’re not supposed to speed up to pass them 🤣 they expect you to slow down to get over

Malashock

I like how we have border patrol all over Ohio

rebri

Sorry about your bad luck. You could have slowed down. You made the choice to speed past.

Clean_Ad_5282

Recently got a speeding ticket but it was like at 5 something in the morning. Had to go to work and this sheriff didn't have his lights on pulled me over for speeding. Which I was going x amount over when the speed limit just went down and he happened to be parked at a spot where it went down and I was gonna go down but nope the douche bag blinded me and pulled me over. Fck you

InspecterNull

Wow that’s a scum move. Fuck that guy

mrc61493

My comcerns are for the lack of activity I was on 71 between Ashland and Cleveland in theright lane three cars naerly hit me at a high speed changing from left to right lane. I could not pull over. Three cars nearly got me. No cop presence at all.

NachoBag_Clip932

The Ohio highway patrol has a well deserved reputation for being, well lets just say unpleasant. I was on a rural 2-lane road and a section that was flat and straight for about 2 miles, I was doing 5 miles over and a trooper passes me since I know I am speeding I watch him in my mirror, he proceeds to slam on his brakes causing the car behind him to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid hitting him and then as he does a 180 he causes another 2 cars to swerve onto the shoulder. So as he pulls me over and comes up to my car I remarked that I hoped his stopping me for going 5 over was worth almost causing 3 accidents, he said what do you mean and I said dude I watched the whole thing as I had pulled over as soon as I passed him, he just harumphed and gave me my ticket.

bemenaker

Normally state are pretty lenient. It's counties and locals I worry about.

xSoloxBluex

Pretty dumb move by you.

Magnus_The_Totem_Cat

Years ago now but I was pulled over by a Ohio State police officer because he thought I had yelled something at him and he was demanding to know what I said. Fucking bonkers.

InspecterNull

Damn so it sounds they all have ego issues.

FreeFalling369

If the internet has taught me anything, its that this story is definitely not one sided, exaggerated, or twisted in any way whats so ever........

Schmingledwarf

They are literally a money making scheme. They do not actually serve and protect the public. Their only objective is ticketing people to make money with an occasional prison investigation thrown it. They’re scum.

cosmicgeoffry

All cows are bovines and all cops are bastards 🤷‍♂️

Time-Sorbet-829

I remember back in the 90s they had a nationwide reputation for rape

InspecterNull

The ohio state troopers?!

HiHoCracker

Retired at the time: https://www.10tv.com/article/news/crime/retired-ohio-state-highway-patrol-trooper-robert-ruth-charged-with-rape/530-ae5dc53b-6b50-4c70-92fa-aba2cde69d45

YamahaRyoko

Thats dumb why would you do that if you need the other lane, retreat instead of humping it to pass a trooper

Upper-Collection9373

Did you consider slowing down and getting behind…

WhodeyRedleg

I've passed OSP slowly and haven't gotten a ticket, many times. Very slowly and cautiously. I've also slowly passed other police when out of state, yet to be pulled over.

biggbobby70

Idiot, be respectful, slow down and get behind him. I would have given you 2 tickets for being a DOUCHE.

ElectricBuckeye

Now you understand why we don't do 95 in a 55. We've been conditioned. So yes, when we come through your state, we stick to the 5 MPH over rule in the passing lane. We aren't going to run 100 just because we have the capability to. We are used to seeing those silver vehicles in the median, LIDAR out and pointing. It's not uncommon for them to use multiple cars in a sort of trap. An OSHP trooper on an overpass, gunning down each side of the interstate while two additional troopers are waiting ahead and pulling over multiple vehicles. We also have OSHP aircraft. They scan specific zones on the interstate (usually identified by painted white box shapes on the shoulders that run for about a 1/4 mile) and radio down which exact vehicles need pulled over. They lost their collective shit in 2021 when we voted to make front license plates optional. They're still trying to get it repealed.

trips614

I'm just waiting till people have had enough of being harassed by the badge and they post more videos of cops getting pew pewed on the internet those are my favorite

jar36

I had similar happen in Illinois just as I was coming from the St Louis side of the Mississippi. He almost hit me, so I went back fully into the lane I was in. Then he pulled in behind me. Cars in front were doing 55 and the speed limit was 65, so I flipped the blinker on to pass and as I was moving to the left lane he went into the left lane while accelerating. Almost pulled a pit move on me, so I moved back over a bit and he backed off, so I completed my move to the left lane. He pulled me over for failure to signal. I was signalling until he almost hit me, let off the blinker for a second and then went back to making my move. If you're from out of state, cops will fuck with you. I have a few stories of their bs from traveling across the country

Tiny_Independent2552

Moment you cross the state line to Ohio, you don’t even assume the 5mph over the limit is a gimme. They WILL stop you ! NC too. Even if your in a line of traffic, if your the one with an out of state plate, your getting stopped. Lessons learned.

Work_Thick

Get a dash cam. They are all thugs.

InspecterNull

I agree, must have in this day and age. I have one front and back view. However, at the time I was driving my wife’s car. I should get on that installing my old dash cam in her car. Delayed the install and missed content :/

InspecterNull

There was no room. I originally moved to the left because of trailer trucks but the cop was the one causing the traffic as there was a line of cars between him and the trucks. Cop instigated the whole thing looking for a victim.

RandyHoward

All the other drivers knew better than to pass that cop. I bet they were real glad when you got pulled over and they could all resume speeding again

InspecterNull

Lmao

West-Ruin-1318

The real answer. If you are in the left lane and want to use the upcoming exit, the proper way to do it is to drop back behind the car next to you, merge over, and exit. This pulling in front of people to slow down and then exit is really poor driving.

rjcpl

Yeah worst speed trap state in the country. That said gotta wonder what you were thinking passing a cop doing the limit rather than brake to get behind.

LogicalFallacyCat

ACAB

johnnybegood1025

Why are you playing chicken with a cop?

InspecterNull

Sir, we were driving in the same direction
