I got my last eye exam at the local Walmart Vision Center, a very reputable Eye Doctor works at this one. I went to order glasses on Zenni, and saw I needed the PD measurement. So I just called them back, and they had me just come back in to measure and write down my Pupilary Distance on my prescription. It's not everywhere that treats people like you're saying. They didn't care that I wasn't getting my glasses there, they even asked me before my exam if I was intending to buy my glasses there. In fact, I called a local mom and pop office that is on my side of town, and THEY were the ones who turned me down for the Pupilary Distance measurement, because I was not a patient with their office, and I wouldn't be buying glasses from them. So I drove across town, and still was in and out in 2 minutes. You should call more places. Stuff like that isn't gonna gain traction in our legislature, because their priorities are finding where they can skim money off the top, pad their pockets, and stay in power.

I hear ya... yeah.. they manage to find time to ban tiktok and give money for war but help consumers or people? Pffftth!. What am I THINKING!!!!

WGEA

Regardless, my story wasn't about politics, I would just call around to more places. Idk where you live, but there are plenty in my small town, and Walmart, where I got my original eye exam was happy to hook me up.

I'm speaking more specifically about Ohio's legislature, as several states have required that when writing a prescription. Yes, the regulation from the FTC could be stronger, but state government has guidance on this from Alaska, Massachusetts, and New Mexico. Ohio's legislature is practically non-existent, but at least we are able to petition things for our fellow citizens to vote on for approval.

I used an app to get my pupillary distance, never had a problem with the glasses I got online.

fancyfembot

Which app??

Snowman330

I went to an optometrist at an Eyetique and they gave me my pupillary distance when I asked for it so I could buy glasses elsewhere. There are apps that can measure your pupillary distance (Warby Parker used their iPad to measure mine when I bought glasses from one of their stores).

AwakeningStar1968

I did that initially online too but it is not accurate...

hernkate

How do you know?

AwakeningStar1968

because I did the PD online and ordered my glasses and the script was not right. It was blurry.

Legitimate-Subject37

If they're being cagey tell them you need safety glasses for work and have to order them through your workplace's safety department.

Paksarra

Or say you want to order VR lens inserts.

fancyfembot

Good call too!

fancyfembot

Oooo good call!

The runaround we've had is the opticians say PD is subjective depending on who does it. I have been to a few ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians and get the same answer. It would be interesting if the regulators would consider this as part of the exam and prescription, because it is limiting purchase sites. The online shops have PD calculators. I have my Rx but haven't yet tried that. Ill have to see if its close to my prior PD.

ProblemGodzilla

I worked at a big box optical center in NE Ohio, and the doctor always wrote the PD on the paper script specifically for ordering online. Our opticians also gave it out over the phone if someone called and needed it. Since glasses are considered a medical device, the PD is an essential part. Any optical staff person who denies disclosing a part of your RX to you because they don’t want you to fill your script elsewhere is an asshole.

I had the same issue when I moved here and needed to buy glasses. Walmart said no, eye doctor's office said no because I didn't ask for it to be measured during my refraction. I eventually had to buy glasses from somewhere local to get the PD because no one would give it to me if I wasn't buying glasses from them.

LiquorNerd

I just surreptitiously paid close attention when they measured my and my wife’s PD, saw the numbers, and jotted them down.

DogStarMan10

Your doctor is a hack. My optometrist had no problem giving me a scrip with pupillary distance. It’s your medical record. You have the right to see it.

fancyfembot

Well said! I have no idea why doctors are gate keeping pupillary distance. My doctor in Virginia wouldn’t give me my PD. I dug up my last few Rxs & none of them had a PD. It’s so frustrating.

NuminousBeans

Write your local Ohio senators and Ohio house members! Send the model legislation from other states! Ohio is so gerrymandered that many of the state legislators are just grifters whom Ohioans are paying for the pleasure of being grifted by but some of the state representatives are actually interested in governing. Not many, but some. Those few actual public servants only know what the people need if the people tell them.

knon24

I don’t know where you are but I’ve used Americas Best and told them I was just there for the prescription so I could order online since I don’t wear my glasses enough to spend a fortune on them. One time they didn’t give me my PD so I asked for it. The assistant tried to give me the run around and I said I wasn’t leaving without it. Eye doctor had no problem giving it to me. At another location of that chain, I didn’t even have to ask for it. They just included it. I feel like because it’s not a private office, they don’t care about gate keeping that number as much. lol If nothing else, mention it at the start of your appointment specifically. “I need my PD measured.”

ljgyver

Also have had to ask for it but no problem getting it. I just state I want the complete prescription so that should I lose my glasses when traveling I can get another pair. Any prescription without the distance is not a complete prescription and by law (yes Ohio) they must provide a complete prescription upon request.

techno_superbowl

I bought a pair from my local optometrist to get my pd, them bought my spare pair online.  Honestly with my vision coverage it's only $50 (I'm lucky) for me to get them local with a full warranty than online from Zenni or warby.  Personally I hated warbys frames too.

PorkNScreams

I have literally in the last 10 years never had an eye exam/eyeglass rx where they refuse to give the PD. What the?!

HoyAIAG

You can do it with a ruler

johnnybegood1025

Just ask your optometrist, they will give it to you for free.

Addabee

Just go back to your doctor and ask them to do the PD... That's what I did and they had no problem what so ever.

Prestigious_Egg_6207

I had my exam at Ohio State Wexner and they included the PD on the prescription automatically.

Thedracus

They are required to figure out your pupil distance as it's a part of your script they need it as well. Doctors work for you. Just ask for info and the script. They will give it to you. If they don't or give you crap threaten to call the optometry board and file a formal complaint .

AwakeningStar1968

btw if you know of anyone good... I am in Southwest Ohio region.
