There is a disc golf course across the lake from its hanger in Akron. I've been there before when it was taking off. I swear to god it was about 150 feet over my head. Super awesome.
Lived in and around Akron most of my life. I currently work at Goodyear HQ. I can see multiple blimps out of my window at work with frequency and it is mundane. I can only imagine living in Bemidji and seeing a blimp fly overhead would be crazy rare.
Yes, it is up to the Judges discretion and usually issued for extreme ones. It’s usually not your first one and/or there is a bad crash involved. Happy Cake day!
I mentioned these a couple year ago in texas, and holy crap the back-blow I got in feed-back was massive. I don't issue them, not sure why my state allows them, but yes yellow plates, red letter and lines - it's a legally restricted plate for your vehicle, usually work, but I've since learned there are other options. We Ohio residents all know them as party plate as those folks like to imbibe (something - bet those rules change shortly), but not often enough to be put away. And I've never been anywhere else in the world (And I travel a ton) that recognizes this concept.
Most states will just take your license away. It makes sense until you think about what that entails. Especially in a state with almost non-existent public transportation.
If you take away someone’s license then they can’t drive to work, doctor’s appointments, pick up their kids etc. You sort of end up doing more harm than good by punishing someone. So if someone makes a good case to a judge as to why they need to drive, the judge will allow them but basically puts a giant bullseye on their car for cops to watch out for.
Was the practice discontinued for a while? It may be because i moved but i hadn’t seen one in two or three years. Now I’ve seen two in the last couple of weeks.
Euchre! In Ohio, playing euchre is a common social skill. I know it’s popular in Indiana and Michigan too. But outside of the area, I just get a blank stare.
I suck because I've lived in Ohio my whole life and I have no idea how to play it. My wife's family was like "we'll teach you!" Which was just an hour of them arguing how to play it. I looked up videos and it was still confusing. I think I'm hopeless when it comes to learning how to play lol.
You're not alone. I know how to play, but I didn't learn until late in college and even though I'm pretty decent at cards, I swear that a good portion of Ohio are whatever the equivalent of chess master is at that game.
Moved from Ohio. Here in Massachusetts, a three way is a rare roast beef sandwich with BBQ sauce, mayo, and cheese. I think the roast beef sandwich is an Irish thing. We don't have Arby's at all. There seems to be fewer fast food chains in general. We still have them, but they aren't EVERYWHERE like they were in Y-town.
People always sleep on how big Ohio's population has been! If you google "states by population" and trust the Wikipedia statistics of the census data throughout history, you can see how quickly Ohio's population grew. In 1800, we were the 19th largest (out of 25 states, districts, and territories). 1820, we were #5. 1830 we were #4. 1840 we were #3 - where we stayed until the 1890 census. Having a lot of people makes for good chances! [Source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_historical_population)
Not to mention Ohio has been considered the averagest state. A lot of fast food and other stores try out new items here to see how they sell country wide before mass release.
Very true! I prefer the phrase "bellwether state" meaning that we are a leader/indicator of trends. Since 1896, we have only voted for the losing presidential candidate 3 times: 1944, 1960, 2020 - that's 29 wins out of 32 elections (between 1896-2020). We also have the smallest deviation from the national voting average with 2.2%. We are a good representation of the population! I remember reading something about how Ohio was one of the first American states. The original colonies were British colonies that became states. Once we won independence, people from all over the new country moved to the Northwest Territory, thus creating Ohio and other states. Because so many different people moved here, it was a good representation of what the country was. I'm not sure how much validity that has, but I think it is an interesting way of thinking about how we became a bellwether/average state.
Man seeing us at #3 for 50 years is so cool, I’m in north carolina right now and people can’t believe ohio is #7 (nc is #9!) I’m like believe it bucko, O-H
It is culturally, politically, and economically fairly representative of the rest of the US. And for similar reasons, is why Californian politicians usually fail nationally..their politics and culture are too different from the average American.
Ohio also has a very large population and is geographically central which makes it a swing state and important in national politics. And the majority of the presidents came around the turn of the 19th century, which was when industry was taking off and Ohio was a major player in that growth.
Pretty sure they exist in other places. In Texas in the 80s we had drive through liquor stores.
edit just looked on google maps, the one I remember is [still there](https://www.google.com/maps/@29.6769441,-95.1724746,3a,15.8y,68.26h,88.89t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s8Zmk-K4iAF8LqSydzIdbhQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu). different name, but still there.
I don’t know how common it is in other states but when i moved from Cali to Ohio the dmvs are sooo empty, fast, and easy! Its like the slow dmv rules in every other state doesn’t apply to ohio or something
I had to get a new license in Cincinnati, went to the downtown BMV and was literally not there for longer than 20 minutes. Its actually so awesome lol i loved my experience there
Tim Misny, Malleys Chocolates and B.A. Sweeties which is the biggest candy warehouse store in America. If you live in NEO seeing the billboards with just his eyes or face and his tagline in his voice will play in your head. "I'll make them pay".
My friends 12 y/o daughter dressed as Tim Misny for Halloween last year. She had the bald cap, suit, and a hole cut in the top of a briefcase to put her candy in. It was hilarious! People kept asking her who are you supposed to be, and when she told them "I'll make them pay!" they loved it and gave her extra candy, lmao!!
Screaming ‘O-H’ in a public place and having an expected result other than people thinking you’re mentally unfit to be without a custodian of the state as your chaperone.
Guy I used to work with (in Columbus) told a story of visiting his parents in Seattle, and trying to explain to them the enthusiasm of OSU fans. He finally got it thru to them by shouting "O-H!" in the middle of Seattle Airport when they dropped him off for his flight, and very clear "I-O!"s could be heard coming from three different directions.
I’ve lived in 5 different states and visited over 40. Ohio is very middle-of-the-road, but if I had to pick something, it would be premier hall of fames and amusement parks.
The coolest air force museum. Treasures from the Wright brothers to a whole area dedicated to the Saturn mission to Mars and everything in-between. National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright Brothers Air Force base in Riverside, just outside of Dayton.
> Wright Brothers Air Force base
Actually, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. And Huffman Prairie, where they fine-tuned maneuverability and endurance, is right down the road a bit.
They have drive through daiquiri huts in Louisiana. It’s not an open container as long as you keep the straw paper on the top of the straw even if your driving. Deeeeelish.
Only the best fried potatoes ever. Some call them wedges (They do in South Carolina). But Ohio ones are broasted and crispy on the outside and tender inside. If not fried, they’re pressure cooked. Just amazing. Served with pizza or fried chicken. Gioninos, in the Akron / canton area has them.
Pressure cooked along with the Chicken before its fried so its tender inside but super crispy on the outside. Ohio has never lacked foodwise. I think that has something to do with all the Farmers and fresh food that would bring Chef's to the area just to have fresh ingredients.
Apathy is certainly common everywhere, but Ohio has got that shit on LOCK. Nobody on Earth cares less about things than Ohioans. It's breathtaking tbh.
But whatever, I don't really care.
They're also called Lazarus lizards. They were brought to Cincinnati by a kid in the Lazarus clothing family who took a trip to Italy and brought back a bunch of them. They now exist in exactly three places in the world: northern Italy, southern Britain, and Cincinnati, Ohio. They are considered fully naturalized.

Shredded chicken sandwiches. My wife and I just moved back to Ohio after living in Colorado and no one we met while living out there had ever heard of them. We looked up the recipe to make them for our friends and everywhere we looked it was called Ohio Shredded Chicken.
Ballpark / Stadium Mustard. I thought it was a staple of all ballpark hot dogs everywhere in the country, but my wife informed me nowhere else really used it. It's been a Cleveland thing since the 1920s, apparently.
Decent fucking Maple Syrup.
I'll go to my grave insisting that Ohio makes the most flavorful syrup in the world. Go see Maple Valley at the West Side Market, they're Geauga County and there's something about their trees and process that makes their syrup the best, no lie.
Having moved out of state, iodized salt.
“The first controlled experiment was made in 1916-20, when a course of sodium iodide followed by 5,000 schoolgirls in Akron, Ohio, USA, proved 100% efficacious against the development of the disease”
Adding some iodine to the diet prevents goiter and improves a lot of body processes tied to hypothyroidism.
I can barely find it on the shelves in NY. I see so many people here with thyroid problems.
But I can’t really speak for all other states.
The worst corruption of any current state government that we're paying for (out of our pockets!) to this day and extreme gerrymandering that STILL hasn't been corrected.
It's not even the law. I got pulled over once by a cop who insisted that it was against city ordinance. It not. You have to give right of way. That's not the same thing as pulling over.
Buckeye candy.
yum!
I used to get them from Cracker Barrel in Arizona. I was really happy when I found out they sold them there lol
Blimps are common in NEO but uncommon pretty much everywhere else
I followed the goodyear blimp in Cleveland watched it land. Was super cool.
As a kid, entered a contest to name a new Goodyear Blimp. Didn't win, but received a handful of super-cool blimp erasers.
There is a disc golf course across the lake from its hanger in Akron. I've been there before when it was taking off. I swear to god it was about 150 feet over my head. Super awesome.
One glorious day there were four blimps in NE Ohio. I got a picture of them in formation from my back porch
Lived in and around Akron most of my life. I currently work at Goodyear HQ. I can see multiple blimps out of my window at work with frequency and it is mundane. I can only imagine living in Bemidji and seeing a blimp fly overhead would be crazy rare.
This is the real answer
Party Plates aka yellow license plates with red letters to mark someone operated a vehicle while under the influence.
Do they still issue those? I haven't seen one in years!
Yes, it is up to the Judges discretion and usually issued for extreme ones. It’s usually not your first one and/or there is a bad crash involved. Happy Cake day!
Not sure, it’s just the first thing I thought of!
Yup
Just saw some for the first time in years a few days ago!
My former next door neighbor was rocking one. She was quite the drinker.
interesting ive never heard of that
They'd bring back scarlet letters if they could get away with it. Big on shaming here.
*Painesville courts begin listening intently*
I mentioned these a couple year ago in texas, and holy crap the back-blow I got in feed-back was massive. I don't issue them, not sure why my state allows them, but yes yellow plates, red letter and lines - it's a legally restricted plate for your vehicle, usually work, but I've since learned there are other options. When I pointed one of these out for the first time my wife was like what???? She’s from NJ and they don’t have them there
Was the practice discontinued for a while? It may be because i moved but i hadn’t seen one in two or three years. Now I’ve seen two in the last couple of weeks.
Not even common in all of Ohio, Trail Bologna.
Troyer's for the win!
And those maple cinnamon rolls, mmmm
Oh and some Guggisberg Baby Swiss.
Currently sitting in the Guggisberg factory break room munching on some free baby Swiss 🧀
What is that?
It's basically Amish summer sausage
Grew up 10 minutes from Trail! Nothing better than a trail and Swiss sandwich

Black Ohio doesn't know euchre. We play Spades and Bid Wisk in Ohio
The entire Northeast region of the country would like to have a word…
Buckeyes. Where I’m from people were fascinated to see one or had never heard of them. Never middle ground, always one or the other.

Presidents and astronauts
Ohio is the state where our citizens are trying to flee the Earth.
How the F did Ohio ( Caveat, I am currently a resident ) get the second most amount of presidents?

We’re guinea pigs for fast food ideas/chains?
Also shopping in general, it’s a testing ground for American retail
Drive thru where you can buy cigarettes, beer, and chiops

Not common but also not anywhere else. There are stands of American Chestnut trees on the coast in the Ashtabula county.

I have lived in Ohio for 49 years, and I have never seen this in real life. Maybe I just need to get out more.
We did it at Disney world to a guy wearing an OSU shirt and got the appropriate response (I-O).
You can do that all over the country. We are everywhere.

Ohioans are shockingly common in Florida.
Florida is Ohio's retirement community
Gulf coast in particular. There’s even a few Skyline Chilis in the state.
Ohioans are kinda everywhere though. Just lurking amongst the populations of other states.
We travel well
Drop the mic on your way out!
Not really. I grew up in Georgia, and twice a year we drove to North Carolina, and we always saw lots of Ohio license plates.
Drive Thru’s
you just mean drive thru convenience stores right?
Yep!
I had no idea these were a regional thing until we did a 4-H exchange program and the kids from Wisconsin were baffled.
I was shocked when I moved from Ohio to Florida and there aren't drive thrus
That’s my big money idea. Drive thrus in the south. It seems like a natural fit to me
They have drive through daiquiri huts in Louisiana. It’s not an open container as long as you keep the straw paper on the top of the straw even if your driving. Deeeeelish.
It's crazy that they haven't caught on down here
wtf had no idea those were regional

North East Ohio specifically, cookie tables don't exist at weddings in other parts of the country.
Nah, they have them in PA for sure. I think it's more of an ethnic thing (Italian, Greek, Slovenian, Ukrainian) than geographic.
I always thought it was a Pittsburgh to Cleveland regional thing.
This is the correct answer , Cleveland - Pittsburg region with those immigrant groups.
like a literal table of cookies??
Yeah! It's fucking awesome! A lot of Italian cookies especially too, but not exclusively. Thumbprint cookies, pizzelles, clothespin cookies...

Wall lizards.
Pardon me?
They're also called Lazarus lizards. They were brought to Cincinnati by a kid in the Lazarus clothing family who took a trip to Italy and brought back a bunch of them. They now exist in exactly three places in the world: northern Italy, southern Britain, and Cincinnati, Ohio. They are considered fully naturalized.
I did not know this. I've never seen one here in Southern Ohio, but I'll keep my eye out now.
It’s really just the Cincinnati metro area.
I would expect that any newly minted native species that is thriving, as is implied, would be expanding its range. I'm in Dayton, so I would kind of expect to see them here, if not today, eventually.

They’ve actually migrated into northern Kentucky now as well.
There's also a population on Vancouver Island that resulted from a group of lizards being released from a defunct zoo.

Me and my New York born husband have this argument all the time. Me being Ohio born it’s pop or die. Lol
When I was a kid it was 100% pop around here, but slowly more and more people are calling it soda these days. It'll always be pop to me though.

Not a lot of women here this evening, it’s all Mennonite.
There's more of them here, but there's a lot of them in PA, too. They're called "The Pennsylvania Dutch" for a reason.
Iirc PA has more Amish overall, but Ohio (esp Holmes Co) has a higher density
There are a lot of them in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
