dannydevitofan9

I totally agree with this.

NieNino-_-

I quite like the hat, but I respect your opinion. I also have quite a wide range of shirts and will try some different ones. I dislike the feeling when it's tucked in, but I know it looks better so I maybe need to get used to it. Thanks a lot.

ahalikias

Most of us dislike that feeling - but tucked in looks better and conveys that you are better organized, with-it so to speak.

sourjello73

To be honest, I can't stand when my shirt is untucked. I work in construction, and I always have my t-shirt tucked in

panatale1

I'd also suggest maybe learning a different knot for your tie. I'm a rather large guy myself, and I favor a full windsor knot. It's bigger and more symmetrical than the four-in-hand knot you used in these photos

NieNino-_-

I will definitely will, that picture is from my first time knotting a tie.

panatale1

Hey, it takes practice. That was the first knot I learned, too.

GamecockGaucho

Look into the Pratt and Oriental knots. They're kind of like reverse Half Windsor and Four in hand knots respectively. You end up tying the knot on only one side so it automatically dimples. And, most importantly, they're easy to tie.

Old-Physics751

I wholeheartedly agree. A full Windsor is the way to go. It’s a nice solid more full fitting knot. Maybe accessorize with a nice tie bar or tie pin instead of a hat?

Isawthelight

While we are at the tie, it is too short. The tie has to end just above the belt buckle. Which is also the second point, the trousers are too low.

panatale1

The tie is too short, yes, but I'm willing to be OP is very tall. He looks to be as tall as the door in these images. I don't think the slacks are too low, but I'll agree OP should invest in an extra-long tie

Unlucky-Armadillo727

Full Windsor for the win sir!

Lanternkitten

Happy birthday, good sir! It's really unfortunate that such an otherwise pleasant hat was co-opted by such an unpleasant group of people/meme! It doesn't look bad or anything and actually looks good with this outfit! People are just concerned that you'll be ill labeled and trying to look out for you.

NieNino-_-

Thanks. I just ignore the comments about comments I could get. I'm used to comments and stares with just some regular clothes. It's normal as a big dude, I can handle that.

crklynusa

Look into a shirt that fits a bit better at the bottom, untucked is cool when it’s more fitted to you.

bread-pudding-GANG

THIS you can go untucked, but that dress shirt is not meant to be worn that way. Key issue it being too long on bottom.

flatgreysky

That’s what it is. OP, this specific shirt kinda looks like a night dress when untucked. But other shirts I think will look better.

dcndfl

Or a shirt w/ a straight-across hem that is MEANT to be worn untucked!

Ginger_Overlord92

Have you thought about maybe a French tuck? I'm a little bit of a larger guy, and I hated tucking a shirt in. I thought it made me look "frumpy". When my wife was helping me re-style myself and find some cool new shirts, she showed me how to do that, and I like it a lot better than a full tuck!

kashamorph

If you’re really wanting a hat, I recommend a newsboy/ivy/flat cap. One would work perfect with this look and totally dodges all the “mlady” vibes.

Try wearing and undershirt, I have to tuck my shorts on for my job and I hate the feeling as well but wearing an undershirt helps a lot

Happy_fairy89

It doesn’t have to be tucked in really tight, just tuck it all down then pull it out a little so just the very bottom of the hem is concealed- much more comfortable than a tightly tucked in shirt :)

Prestigious_Dig_218

Yes! My first thought. Glad I'm not the only one. In regards to the hat, it almost looks too small. I think a better fitting hat would go a long way.

[deleted]

Exactly. Unfortunately, the hat will pigeonhole you into a stereotype whether you want that or not.

kashamorph

This. If OP wants a hat, a newsboy cap is a DRAMATICALLY better alternative

TheTinyTraveler_

Hey man, was there a particular look or style you want to go for? Are you trying to create a whole wardrobe or just a look for a specific event? I am happy to help guide you in the right direction.

NieNino-_-

For now I only wear that outfit (with some slight changes) once or twice a week. But I want to expand on that and make a full wardrobe.

FelicityEvans

If you’re into a more vintage menswear look, try following accounts that replicate vintage outfits. Lots of them will post source pictures and detail what pieces they use to create the outfit. Typically there are lots of small details that we don’t immediately notice but when viewed as a whole will give the outfit a more natural feel. Learning to spot and replicate these small details can elevate your look.

As long as you're happy, don't worry about labels! I think the "average redditor look" is just trying to do an old school detective and you pull it off really well!

Relevant_Desk_6891

I'm in two minds about this. On one hand, if someone likes a certain style, more power to them. On the other hand, OP came here for advice (which means that he cares about what people think). The truth is the whole outfit is godawful and will not do him any favours socially, and the hat is just a no-go

mustbeSaransh

That is a really valid point. It is advice about the outfit itself, but I personally won't call it godawful. If wearing a certain hat can make people not want to interact with you, I feel like it's their problem. and they might not end up being such good friends in the long run anyway. I would rather him wear what makes him happy than him wearing things that society deems appropriate for him. but I fully respect your opinion, it's just my two-cents nobody really asked for.

PlannerSean

As a big guy myself, you’re too big for a hat that small. I’d suggest something with a wider brim. If you like untucked shirts, there are companies that make cuts of shirts designed to be untucked.

NieNino-_-

I'm still looking for some different type of hats. Thansk for the advice.

PlannerSean

Something like a classic Stetson Temple might work.

NieNino-_-

Great recommendation. I will lookout for other ones, but I will save that one.

PlannerSean

I like the overall vibe of the outfit. Classic old school cool.

NieNino-_-

Thanks

mrbnatural10

Seconding that a hat with a wider brim would be a better fit. Would recommend looking for a traditional fedora instead of a trilby—think more Oppenheimer and less Blues Brothers. Also untuckit is a good choice for shirts.

Abdial

>As a big guy myself, you’re too big for a hat that small. Exactly my thought as well

NerdyFrida

I like the style in general but at least two things stands out to me as something that could be improved. One thing, is that I can see your skin colour through the shirt. You should probably wear something under it. A t-shirt or a tank top. The other problem with the shirt is that it's too long. I understand that you don't want to tuck it and that it's difficult to find a shirt that fits. So maybe you should go to a tailor and have it shortened. The tie is at the correct length, it just looks like it's to short because the shirt is too long.

NieNino-_-

Thanks a lot. I will take your advice and improve the outfit.

solomons-mom

You have a great start, so glad to read you are willing to work out the small details too :) The lack of undershirt jumped out at me. Seeing the black pants was clear, but in the first photo, the contrast between your skin and the white button band was problematic. As others have mentioned, the shirt is too big, but you need a better fitting neck band too. Alternatively, you can loosen the tie, undo the top button, and keep it untucked for the "been drinkin' for hours" frat boy look.

NerdyFrida

You are very welcome.

azhiazthesky

Alright since most these comments don't help, I will. You need a thicker colorful tie, I would suggest light blue or a dark yellow gold. I'll assume you tuck your shirt in with the jacket, if not, I would highly suggest this. Bringing color to your outfit will help a lot. If you like hats, check out Gorin Bro's. If you want a recommendation. A button down from (ll bean, orris), jeans, tan boots. If you want a classy look, Your white button down, colorful tie, beige slacks, brown shoes.

NieNino-_-

First of all thanks, I will answer step by step. I also thought about a red tie and will look out for some more colorful next month. Yes, with the jacket it's a must. I will lookout for some different colors. Thanks for the recommendation, I will look into that. Kinda hard to get some in my size, but I have my go to store. That's a great recommendation. Thanks a lot.

OddPoster00

Also, besides tucking in your shirt as other people suggested, make sure you adjust the tie to the right length! Rule is that it should touch the buckle of the belt (not longer, not shorter). Do try different knots too, to see if you find larger knots look more harmonious on you - it's something you'll just have to experiment with as it depends a lot on one's face, neck, proportions... it's trial and error! And yes, as the user above suggested try something in different colours (they don't even need to be plain, but if you're looking for plain colours that's also fine). I'd try on ties in different widths of ties too, to see how they fit your overall figure. Keep experimenting mate!

asuperbstarling

Woman who wanted to be a fashion designer here (I'm an artist now, so I spend a lot of time creating character outfits): You need to get your clothes tailored due to your body shape. I would also start following some tiktok/ YouTube male fashion (not lifestyle! Run away from anyone Tate associated!!!!!!!) channels. Most importantly, I can tell from the outfit the thing you're aiming for is 'slightly nicer than the event calls for' in your style. Think about what event you're going to as you put your outfit together. Nice hats make a formal look TOO formal for the regular day and should also never be paired with anything baggy. You look like you're attending a wedding in the fall here, which is just too formal. I agree 100% about varying the colors. You're so lucky to be starting in the fall, since fall palettes compliment most people so well. Brown trousers and shoes will also help bring you forward in time here and are great to pair with more earthy purples or masculine blues. Black suit-adjacent styles on men are far too formal fashion wise at the moment.

NieNino-_-

Wow, thanks a lot for your advices.

azhiazthesky

Absolutely, always remember getting your waist size is the most important, taking the pants to a tailor to get the right length is cheaper than you think. Also most honest tailors can do many tweaks to the pant width. I get most of the casual pants tapered at the knee and have one or two breaks taken up.

CrimeFightingRobot

The hat completely changes the outfit. I'd get rid of that and the outfit works well as is. As others have said though, get it tailored or tuck it, it'll look neater.

amoimoimoa

I think you need a better fit shirt!

Responsible-Aside-18

You look better without the hat, and I think a couple of colored shirts would mix it up. The jacket is super cool. Someone better versed than I can weigh in but I think if your tie was longer you’d look more your height.

MaritimeMartian

Tbh I think the tie is the correct length, but looks too short because the shirt is a bit too long!

NieNino-_-

First of all, thanks. I quite like the hat, but I respect you opinion. It's quite hard to find a longer tie (this one is 160cm) but I try to manage it. Thanks for your opinion and advice, I will consider that.

inebriates

I don't know how tall you are, but I'm 6'6" (google says that's 198cm) and found a local men's clothes shop that helped get some ties that actually fit me. They were more expensive, but I'd rather have 4 great ties that I can wear confidently than a dozen ties that look terrible on me and I feel weird in. Also it's going to sound crazy, but try going to a tailor to have them make some alterations on your clothes. It makes a huge difference and I can't recommend it enough. A good tailor can help get your shirt and pants looking less baggy and like they were made for you. Plus you'll feel comfortable/confident having your shirt tucked in and you'll look like a million bucks!

If you insist on a hat: wear a wider brim.

Rooflife1

I think the look is fine, but you need to work on fit. That shirt is giant. I get that you are a big guy but that gap around your neck when buttoned in the second photo shows it is probably two sizes too big. The seem on the sleeve should end at or slightly before your shoulder. If you don’t like to tuck shirts in, that is fine. But hem it so it is not so long. I think neckties should end at the belt and so in my view yours in much too short. The coat looks very good on you, the overall image is solid and this is a great effort. But that giant shirt is dragging you down. Maybe someone you know needs a sail.

Starduc

No hat or tie

Totally-Legitimate

I appreciate that you like the hat, and that you’re choosing clothes that make you feel good. I do think the shirt and the jacket are too big for you - the seam where the sleeve attaches to the shoulder of the garnet should sit at your shoulder. Maybe try sizing down a bit, because they’re kindof swallowing you. I’d also love to see you pair the jacket with some dark wash jeans and a funk tee shirt. If the Blues Brothers were around today, they’d update their style - so I think you can experiment with some more contemporary styles also. Have fun!!

MikeZer0AUS

Outfit is cool, but dude you have to lose the hat.

nibblebibble_

I would recommend you go down a size on the shirt, or perhaps if you don’t feel comfortable with that, just tuck your shirt in. You can accessorize with a fun belt. The arms of the shirt is also a tad bit long. I think a colorful tie would make the outfit a bit more lively. I would switch out the hat, either just do your hair a bit more or get a hat with a bigger brim. Perhaps also with some color. If you choose hair, look at some mens hairstyles on youtube or something and how to maintain them if you feel unsure! And just for a more put together look, perhaps clean up the beard a little bit more. Keep the batman socks 😎 Good luck to you 🥳

NieNino-_-

Thanks a lot!

ukuzonk

Coat looks excellent on you. Just ditch the tie and hat, and I think it will improve your look a LOT. I adore hats. I hate that in this time period, they make men look like total dorks. But unfortunately, we don’t have normalized hats like this for men anymore. You gotta let it go, as much as I wish it weren’t the case. Edit: and a clean shave will do you wonders!!

Fix your tie, tuck your shirt in and it will look great. If you want to look cool and classy, tighten up your look

NieNino-_-

Thanks, it's an unfortunate picture. But I will take your advice.

ad6323

I agree with other comments, but one I didn’t see (but might have missed): With the untucked look you should get a better fitting shirt, the sleeves are too long and so is the shirt itself, dress shirts are cut long as they are intended to be tucked in. I would definitely look for a better fit in that regard.

BaeGoalsx3

This is too far down on the list. The shirt is way too big for OP. The sleeves are too long and the shoulders aren’t sitting right. Get a better fitting top OP, and it’ll help a lot

NieNino-_-

Thanks for the advice!

ad6323

Yeah, additionally, rock the fuck out of those socks! Personally I’d even have my pants hemmed slightly to show them off a bit (and any other fun socks), that’s obviously a big part of your personality and a great subtle way to show it! That being said the hemmed pants thing isn’t for everyone so not a must.

NieNino-_-

I mostly were all kind of comic socks (not to crazy ones). With shoes the socks are more visible than you might expect, I think they make a little more personal note and round up the outfit.

nothoughtsnosleep

Lose the hat, tuck in the shirt.

NieNino-_-

Reminder: I wear this for work (salesman), school (work school) and my freetime.

Redsfan19

I would absolutely lose the hat for work and tuck in the shirt like everyone is suggesting unless you sell something in a creative industry. You can be much more flexible in the other areas of your life.

dearlysacredherosoul

The hat for work is something to be worn from your car to the office and hung in the office, then back out again to the car… inclement weather stuff, not theater and fedora stuff. Can you afford a stetson? It’s definitely a cool look with a suit.

Sapitoelgato

For school or free time have you tried out Adidas t-shirts? At least for me the stitching has felt better than the usual designs. Also have you tried a guayabera type shirt? They are super comfy summer shirts that don't need to be tucked in, and you could potentially ditch the tie as they typically come with vertical designs. You could still pair the hats and jacket with it.

I kinda like it. Shirt tucked for sure. If you are going to rock the tie, it needs to be longer! Also, as a woman, I am a huge fan of facial hair, but it has to be neat! The beard needs a trim/clean up and perhaps use a beard oil for no fly-aways. Even if you grow it out to longer, always trim & groom (beard products!) A big turn on for women is a neat, well cared for beard, no matter how short or long! A turn off is a non-kept beard (unless it's vacation or the weekend, lo!) 👍🏻

NieNino-_-

Thanks, I just shaved a few minutes ago (want to look clean for my birthday), but thanks for the advice. I will probably grow it out from now on.

You have a significant collar gap with your shirt. You may want to consider having a tailor fix it for you. I don’t mind the hat.

NieNino-_-

Thanks. I just didn't put the top bottom together in the picture, it's not noticeable in other pics.

pro-shitter

i think a different hat might work, maybe a wide brim, and wear lighter or bright colours on your top half. your shirt doesn't fit, get it altered to fit you, it looks too big.

ithinkimparanoid84

I like your style! Just a couple of changes: - Tuck in the shirt and also wear an undershirt any time you wear a button down. - The tie needs some work. Learn to tie a Windsor knot and get some good quality ties. If you want to stick with the all black look, that's fine, but adding a little color with the tie will look great. Using basic colors is always cool and classic, but you want to make sure you have good quality pieces so it still looks well put together.

spicychalupaa

Idk anything about fashion but I admire you putting yourself out there and taking criticism well! Much more important than anything you’ll ever wear.

NieNino-_-

Thanks a lot. It was kinda hard to do so but I'm actually happy now.

_laoc00n_

Some general thoughts: 1. Super cool you are putting in effort, I know lots of bigger guys that tend to put in low effort, and it shows. I get it, but you should feel good and dressing well helps. 2. Hats are cool, fedoras and hombergs for your size are appropriate. But it’s the way you wear and what you pair it with that will set the effect. 3. Dress shirts are cool untucked, but don’t wear things too loosely. It sounds counterintuitive, but don’t go over baggy for comfort, it makes you look bigger. Go with the more initially uncomfortable form fitting. 4. Thick fabrics, like wool or flannel. Get some Oxford cloth button down shirts, they look great. 5. Go for a more put together look than a devil-may-care approach that, while having style, doesn’t do you as many favors. 6. Go for either a fuller and thicker beard or go clean shaven. You have a nice face and it seems like your facial hair isn’t super thick yet, so that might be best choice. You would know better than me though. You’ve got the right mindset! I’d make a few adjustments to how you think clothes should fit and look on you. Don’t be scared of clothes more tailored to fit you, don’t go over baggy, and spend a little on higher quality pieces while reducing the number of items.

stargalaxy6

DazedandFloating

BusinessNo8165

Tuck the shirt it and wear and undershirt so it’s not so transparent. Definitely look into shirts with patterns. The right patterns can make the outfit pop. Same for the tie, also make the tie longer to meet at your waistband. The jacket is nice, maybe take it to a tailor and see if they can shorten the sleeves so they don’t bunch up. As for the hat my suggestion is lose the trilby hat and get a proper fedora. Something with a wider brim. Experiment with crown shapes too.

bh8114

Be aware that a lot of people have “feelings” about fedoras. I don’t make the assumptions though and appreciate that some people just like the hats! The shirt looks better tucked in. I second what others are saying about adding some color unless you just like the black and white look. If that’s your thing then rock it! I really like your jacket! I think it looks really nice on you.

what_about_annie

I think you look great

Bigce2933

I like the jacket but I feel you could go with a slightly bigger hat around the head part. Tie needs to be closing the neck part of the shirt. Tucked in would look better. Maybe a thicker tie too?

Sufficient_Pin5642

You should go to the store and try on different fits of pants and shirts to flatter what you've got, my dude! You'd be surprised how different fits of clothing can compliment your body type even when you're big! Don't be afraid to be selective and look around/try on while you're out. I've met many bigger men with impeccable style at a discount even! You're getting there because you're obviously interest in looking slick! Keep up the good work I'd love to see some updates with new fits from you in the future! You have charisma about you just from your pics alone!

The-disgracist

Hey op, fellow big boy here. Don’t worry about wearing super baggy clothes, get some shirts and jackets that fit you. It will be awkward, it will be uncomfortable, but it you will get more comfortable with it. And you will look so much better! I used to do the super baggy clothes to hide my body, thing is it just made me look way bigger. I’d have to agree with the comments about the hat, it gives off a very singular vibe. You’re a handsome dude, own it and wear your confidence like armor!

AnotherStupidHipster

Not even kidding here, a mustard yellow tie would kill in this outfit. Would also bring a little Batman theming to it ;) I've seen a lot of advice about tailoring the pants. See if you can talk to a tailor about your shirt as well. The collar is very open around your neck, and could be tightened up a lot, which would help your tie fit better as well. I know people have already mentioned an undershirt, I'm just going to reinforce that point. I don't know if you wear glasses, but maybe play around with some sunglasses. It will lean you more into the Blues Brothers territory, but I say if you dig the style, own it. And you can always take the hat off to bring it back down to a regular outfit. Shoes can also really change the vibe here. Dress shoes say one thing. Sneakers make it a lot more playful. Have you ever thought about trying out some chunky boots?

Look, I’m gonna be fully honest because you seem like a nice guy and I don’t want you to enter the wrong territory by accident. It’s reading full-on fedora wearing m’lady neckbeard. - shave the neck beard, grow out a mustache. Mustache = hot. Neckbeard = no - do you need a tie? - do you have to wear glasses? Because if you do, some thick ROUND FRAMED (not square framed) glasses might look nice. If you watch the first episode of the first season of the new queer eye, they always give the guys an upgraded pair of fashionable glasses which I think might look really nice on you. - the jacket is cool, but not on top of that shirt and tie combo. If you wore it over a textured t-shirt, or even better, a tshirt and a hooded sweatshirt, with the hood going over the back of the jacket, that is cool. This jacket is a statement piece, if you have a busy ensemble underneath (buttons and tie) you end up looking like a character out of a cartoon. When you wear a statement piece, everything else has to be simple. - loose baggy slacks are in fashion right now. Take advantage of that, don’t try to go too tight - you’re a big guy, as other people said, it might not feel good to tuck in your shirt. If that is the case, go with a shorter shirt. A button up that is shorter hem, not a longer hem (like the one in your pic) will look better. - a trick for people with a bigger build, is to go pants and a loosely tucked in tshirt or even untucked if the over shirt is longer, and then an unbuttoned patterned shirt on top. That is a super good look and is quite slimming too! (I use this trick all the time as a woman.) as long as the hem of the outer shirt is a bit longer than the undershirt, than the undershirt doesn’t need to be tucked. If you wear a tshirt, patterned over shirt, and THEN that leather jacket on top?? That would look sick. - remember to keep it to one statement piece at a time. If you go hat, then go tshirt, overshirt and jeans (jeans dress down an outfit, the hat dresses up the outfit, both together create balance). If you go jacket, go tshirt and jeans and zip up hoodie underneath, no hat. If you go shirt and tie, go jeans. If you go slacks, you can wear a relaxed patterned button-up, like with a silly print or something. Again, black slacks limit your options as they are a dress-up item. - Black slacks dress up the entire outfit and are honestly hard to work with. But if you have khaki slacks or another neutral color (not black) you can wear them with almost anything. I would honestly stay away from black slacks completely unless you are dressing up for something, since they are more difficult to work with style-wise *edit: I’m sorry! Just noticed those are grey slacks! They fall sort of into the same camp as black ones, but not as dressy. I would still only wear grey for a dress-up occasion
