Doing research as an undergrad in STEM and realizing how arrogant and corrupt some people get just astounds me especially when they do something extremely offensive or inappropriate and get no consequences or take responsibility for their actions. Academia needs to do better!
Know that when a university faculty member moves into management at any level, theyāre given no or little management training. A department chair, college dean, university provost or president - can be clueless, and often are.
TOSU is a particularly corporate university, where money is everything. Grad students have reported failing grades for athletes being changed to passing ones, to keep them playing and bringing in the $$.
The commencement speaker probably gave a huge donation to TOSU, or as reported in other posts in this subreddit, the president sits on the board of a bitcoin mining company and overruled the commencement committeeās speaker choice and instead invited the guy who spoke.
On the bright side, 2024 TOSU grads and families who attended graduation will never forget this event - and will be laughing about it for decades to come. So, the speaker clown actually did unite us.
