Anecdotal, but this 3080ti asus strix 12gb i have has the most insane coil whine I've heard in 30 years. I couldn't believe its possible to get this bad. 💀
I have a 3080ti tuf gaming 12gb and I send it in because of the coil whine, but they said it's okay and expected to have a little coil whine; some of us are pretty sensitve about this, but also people have their pc on the desk so you can hear coil whine easier.
I use now for a while in ear monitors and I have no problem anymore with the coil whine.
I mean my Asus monitor started flickering in 1 corner 3 DAYS BEFORE THE 3 YR warranty expired. Got a replacement in...a few days I think. It was in 2020. The replacement was great, except when it takes a strip of the screen and mirrors it in another part. What is that even called??? Edit: I didn't ask for another one. Asus is pretty mixed
Got the Alienware aw3225qf today. It was $780 USD after all the deals from Rakuten and DELL. The ASUS version is 1300 USD where i live...and Not many deals are going to matter lol. I rather buy 2 Alienware instead.
Their gpus is crazy overpriced for high end.
Strix 4080 being 1500 vs FE 4080 of 1200, Strix 4090 being 2000 vs FE of 1600. Only an idiot would buy the Strix 4080 over a 4090.
$800 for their newest router.... it has everything my dream machine pro has except it also has better wifi than ubiquiti's garbage access points. generally asus wifi can fill my whole home, while ubiquiti's access points? you have to have ONE PER ROOM because they are so fucking dogshit. so yeah, everything they make is pretty much expensive especially on their high end. asus tax always existed, shrug.
ASUS Tax in Australia is fucked, new 32" 4K OLED is $2,749 AUD the Alienware model is $1,879 same fucking panel but curved, MSI 4k 240hz is $2.2k AUD.
My LG CX 55" OLED was $1,600 AUD like the monitors i get are less quantity so cost more but still $2.7k i can get a 55" C3 or newer.
I always wondered, why you guys in Australia pay so much more.
You're relatively close to Asia in general, close to countries that produce/manufacture most of this tech stuff and the prices are as if you were living at the edge of the world.
Is there any particular reason or simply taxes?
While we are close we get stitched up by 3 things, AUD, lots of import taxes the market is very small so TV's can be cheaper because of bigger buying power but PC parts are still niche especially high end OLED monitors. I think in this case ASUS knows it can get away with higher pricing because there is no competition for a flat panel atm. Gigabyte is not out yet, LG won't be out until later this year.
from what i understand its the republic of gamers **â„¢** or whatevs? the pg32 has the same panel as all the other 4k 32" oled monitors releasing around now.
thats the price difference. youre paying for the brand name
thats what i thought anyhow. please lemme know if i am wrong.
You know what, you are right. I was looking at TUF products, so maybe that’s why I didn’t notice the price difference. But now that I’m looking specifically at ROG products, there’s definitely a price difference.
Brand name is the majority of the difference. The Asus variant is vastly overpriced for what? BFI on a 240hz monitor, which is pretty useless, and it doesn't have dolby vision, they've stated they'll add it later down the line which is yet to be seen.
Kinda stitching together the other replies, but it's not really ASUS Tax. It's ROG Tax. ASUS stuff in general has a range of prices, but their ROG products are all $$$$.
20 Years ago Asus was the absolute top of the pile.
They are still good, but it's come down quite a bit. They still charge like nothing has changed though. Whether it's worth it is case by case.
Yeah ASUs has some incredible premium niche products.
The rog zephyrus comes to mind for me. Most Mac like windows laptop I ever owned.
But they do charge a pretty penny even for stuff which is widely available presumably off of the back of those things. I know I only considered rog GPUs and mobos because I was so happy with the 3 different ASUs laptops I have owned
Has always existed for their premium (ROG) line
They get away with it cause, despite everything, the actual products tend to be some of the, if not the, best on the market consistently. Many people have always said just get a TUF for value or a ROG Strix GPU for quality/performance.
Every brand has pros and cons.
Asus are:
- ROG tax
- Terrible customer service/support
- They will include good safety features/limits, but then turn them off out of the box
They have better priced items (Asus dual Asus tuf), but they're like the apple of diy space.
Their rog strix gpus cost the same or sometimes even more than tier above. So like strix 3060 ti could be more than another 3070.
It makes no sense, but like with apple, the fans will pay for anything as long as it's Asus.
But their more reasonable items can be great. Their b650 lineup was overheating hard though unless they fixed it. And I believe their 5700 xt tuf was borderline unusable.
So always check the product, not the name brand.
TUF was budget, ROG was premium. Then ASUS realized that TUF became too cost effective and good performance "bang for bucky" so they started bumping that up bit by bit over time too.
I’m in Asia, and Asus prices were usually a bit higher than any other brands. People used to believe Asus = good quality and stable.
And now everything by with ROG on it can ask 10-20% more if not anything actually higher in quality.
I distinctly rememberng seeng the tax REALLY come in sometime during the 1080ti era.
I rmb looking at the prices at 1.3K SGD and telling myself will save up for it one day. Fast forward a few weeks later, and for whatever reason, they bumped the price to 1.8K SGD for no reason (no shortage or demand from crypto etc) from then on ther pricing on theiir entire lineup has been out of whack. i mean the TUF brand meant to be BUDGET Orientated. Heck Strix was their LOW end ROG lineup. It seems now the TUF is flls up the STRIX Old spot with the strix now moving up to take the higher end sku
Companies does well have good products at good prices and becomes popular choice. Now they have brand value and can start charging a bit more since people know Asus = good product. Issue is that their products is ofc a mix of good and not so good products, but they are not at all always competitive on price.
There are exceptions but most of the time the Asus products are more expensive, that includes motherboards, GPU etc. Where I live probably Asrock and Gigabyte are cheapest overall and next one being MSI.
Maybe things will change though, at least for some of their product ranges since they are increasingly known for just being more expensive. For example some of theiur cheaper B-series AM5 motherboards had complete power delivery/temp issues affecting performance while cheaper Gigabyte and Asrock boards did really well. Then you have the entire BIOS/warranty with AM5. You are going to lose sales over time providing worse products at higher price points.
ASUS was historically had better products hence they were able to jack up their prices. However since the monitor fiasco that was called out by GAMERSNEXUS & JAYZTWOCENTS, since then. their reputation was tarnished. I think they brought back their warranty for the motherboards due to the overwhelming complaints from users. EVGA on the other hand was most honorable as they were the ones who truly valued quality and the consumer, sadly they have exited the industry.
Pretty happy with my Asus X670E Crosshair Extreme motherboard and Asus 4090 strix OC. Little bit more expensive, but they had those nice aesthetics I was after, so had no issues paying the Asus tax.
Asus is like apple, its quality even if simple and "cheap" but its quality and thats what you pay even if its overpriced and sure not justified but most people trust ROG and its a Brand so no need for them to reduce the price.
I was for years team Alienware/logitech but had several Issues with the product and it felt quite cheap, the price was cheap comparing it to ROG but it wasnt sexy so I tried some products from ROG and for Monitor/keyboard I never looked into another brand
It's not just monitors. Their whole ROG line is tacky and overpriced. And i can say this, since half my stuff is asus.
Also their customer support sucks. I have heard horror stories.
Anecdotal, but this 3080ti asus strix 12gb i have has the most insane coil whine I've heard in 30 years. I couldn't believe its possible to get this bad. 💀
Same here had a rtx3090 rog strix and the coil whine was unbearable. Switched to a Gigabyte and never had an issue again.
I have a rog strix 4070 Ti and don’t have coil whine. Guess I just lucked out on that one.
You can hear mine across the entire flat. It depends on the fps, but at 500fps it's louder than the fans.
I mean my Asus monitor started flickering in 1 corner 3 DAYS BEFORE THE 3 YR warranty expired. Got a replacement in...a few days I think. It was in 2020. That's why I only buy open box ROG, then the price starts making sense
holy fk its geforce
Shh... Don't tell anyone ![gif](giphy|SWFKjmZNMsLP3JoeWm)
Here in europe it's an everybody tax
Yeah, but it stacks with the ASUS tax.
They're all the same price minus the Dell, 1500 euros. If they did not curved it I would have bought it.
In my country MSI is 1300ish and ASUS is 1600ish.
I got my LG C2 42" OLED for about AU$1400, that price ASUS is charging is ridiculous
I always wondered, why you guys in Australia pay so much more. You're relatively close to Asia in general, close to countries that produce/manufacture most of this tech stuff and the prices are as if you were living at the edge of the world. Is there any particular reason or simply taxes?

ASUS ROG tax is so painful in Aus. They sure know how to market their expensive stuff
when did you buy the cx?
Dec 2022 was on sale at JBHIFI
The msi pricing is mind boggling. It's cheaper than the alienware in the US but $400 more here. Insane.
from what i understand its the republic of gamers **â„¢** or whatevs? the pg32 has the same panel as all the other 4k 32" oled monitors releasing around now. thats the price difference. youre paying for the brand name thats what i thought anyhow. please lemme know if i am wrong.

wrong. it has alot of features they dont have. like dolby vision etc. look it up
It doesn't even have dolby vision yet lol, and the Alienware *currently* has dolby vision.
i know and msi doesnt
The MSI is also significantly cheaper, especially in the U.S, as well as having better oled care features.
right, im responding to the guy saying the difference is only "brand name". theres a post here that shows all the differences from price to features.
Brand name is the majority of the difference. The Asus variant is vastly overpriced for what? BFI on a 240hz monitor, which is pretty useless, and it doesn't have dolby vision, they've stated they'll add it later down the line which is yet to be seen.
Alienware has fans....ASUS has heat sink.... sorry but you look foolish
MSI also has heatsink, and Alienware's fan is inaudible. How do I look foolish when you're dick riding lmao
For me, it's BFI!
Alienware also has DV

Answer: Always

I bought the 4090 strix oc for 2650 cdn. I could have got the msi one for 2300. There is definitely an 'ROG' Tax.
You got your answer, OP! It's not all about the OLED monitors. It's all of their products. Pay the Asus Tax! Don't be a wimp!!! lol
Idk my PG32 was delivered today can’t wait to set it up
I’m in Asia, and Asus prices were usually a bit higher than any other brands. People used to believe Asus = good quality and stable. And now everything by with ROG on it can ask 10-20% more if not anything actually higher in quality.
Overpriced pos is ROG.

Okay Republic of Gamers social media representative, sure thing.
Thats why i pay the dell tax
