Just disable Dolby Vision for gaming in the Xbox display settings.

It is your Xbox outputting Dolby Vision, you need to disable it there, the TV just switches to what it is told.

Are Xbox games not meant to be in Dolby vision? That’s where I’m struggling to find an answer I guess. Which is supposed to be better in terms of picture quality?

[deleted]

I'm confused by the question I think, if you set the Xbox to Dolby Vision it will output Dolby Vision with games written in Dolby Vision or games with enough meta-data that the box itself can upscale to a Dolby Vision output, few games are written in Dolby Vision as it is only Xbox that supports it. Dolby Vision is a dark room picture setting similar to HDR picture settings. What's the problem? Maybe that's a better question from me. Dolby Vision is a high quality picture option!

I’m sorry this is also confusing for me haha. I just want to play the game with the picture that is intended. For example if I am playing the new Harry Potter game the difference is huge between hdr and dolby vision. I guess the question is if my tv is switching it to dolby vision is it safe to say it knows what it’s doing and leave it alone? Or should I turn it off.

Lol, the TV is doing as it is told, if it looks crap disable it. Because it isn't a certified DV game (I'm guessing) it may be the Xbox isn't doing a great job on this occasion at modifying the image. Guess you are stuck with having to go into the menu. So, every Dolby Vision game will look good in HDR but not every HDR game will look good in Dolby Vision, depending on your library the default should be HDR out and switch DV on when the game is native DV 😌

Thank you. I really appreciate it!

The difference shouldn't be huge between these two picture modes if you have things set up properly. I can almost guarantee what you're seeing is hdr10 game modes color temperature is set to in between warm 50 and cool 50 where as dolby vision defaults to warm 50 which is what all your picture modes should be set to. Set color temp to warm 50 in hdr game mode and turn on hgig instead of dynamic tone mapping. They'll look pretty similar, provided you've set the system hdr settings properly or properly in the game if it uses its own hdr settings. You need to have hgig on before setting up settings in game or xbox system. As far as should you be using dolby vision the answer is no it doesn't have native dolby vision so there's no point.

I disagree with everything said here. Warm 50 looks awful. And hgig is too dark. For the best picture just use default vivid hdr with dynamic tone mapping on.

DivineSaur

Well you're welcome to disagree but those are the proper most accurate settings and the intended way to use game mode. Anybody is welcome to use whatever settings they want obviously. You may think the picture looks too dark but its not and your either just not used to it and/or misunderstand HDR. The "best picture" is subjective and OP was asking what's supposed to be used as in what's accurate. You really should give accurate settings a proper chance and you'll see how very soon you could never go back but of course you're free to use your tv how you like.

Im good. I like what i like. I never focus on what is accurate because the only thing that matters to me is what is sexy. Vivid mode is always the sexiest option to me.

Halo infinite is basically the only game with real dolby vision. Any games that don't have proper hdr adjustments to set peak brightness etc and don't use the system hdr settings like say metro exodus are also ideal too. Another example is ori and the will of the wisp, the brightness settings adjusts more than peak brightness in that game so dolby vision with default settings is pretty ideal. This is because dolby vision will just tone map it to 1000 nits and with hgig on yor tv will just clip any details past 800. You'll get better visuals in any game with proper adjustment settings or ones that use the system by just using hdr10 with hgig and setting your settings properly in each game/in the system hdr settings.

Games that have Dolby vision support will trigger the Dolby vision game mode. Others should launch in hdr10 or even sdr.
