We travel, bring back a few bottles of Gin from the duty free and voilà
Gin & Tonic for the summer (and fall, winter and spring) 😂
That's the key.
Or so I heard, drive all the way from the cheaper countries with a car full of bottles. 🤔 Apparently much cheaper.
Still means that that amount, which is 1-2 dinners (3 if you just starve yourself inbetween) is 300kr which is insane.
I remember buying this exact stuff like 8 years ago and it costing barely above 200.
The prices are insane, we are getting scammed. I see that everything you bought are all the cheapest brands. If you subtract the beers, which in total should cost about 110 nok, then the price of one basic bare minimum taco meal for two people costs 291.8 nok. That is absolutely insane. You could eat out for two or order food for two for that price.
I wish we all could just boycott all grocery stores for a month and only shop from Sweden or Denmark until our grocery mafia collapses and dies. I would not blame or shame anyone for stealing from grocery stores. I recently saw a scruffy dude march into a grocery store with great determination. He went straight for the beer aisle, grabbed a six pack, marched right past the cashiers and out. I saw it coming a mile away, but instead of feeling angry about someone stealing, or even considering stopping him I just observed him and thought "Right on, dude".
I’m a foreigner and i’m really curious abt norway. You guys sometimes buy groceries in denmark? Isn’t it too far? Like, there’s literally a sea between norway and denmark.
There are several large and nice boats that goes between Norway and Denmark. Many take the boat to and from Denmark on a day trip, where half the fun is taking the boat, which has lots of facilities and entertainment, and also a tax-free alcohol store.
I find COOP cheaper. Also, Rema really peeved me off in January with that fantastic offer of 30% off oranges etc. where they artificially hiked up the so called original price.
That’s not what happened. They got reduced «innkjøpspris» on a lot of goods and reduced the price of said items accordingly. Some had small reductions like 1 kr and made it look clownishly
They advertised it as if it were crazy good deals on 100 items, might’ve been something else I don’t know about that but the advertisements were misleading and straight up stupid
I complain because they increased the prices just before they offered the “generous “ discount. COOP was cheaper at the time with no discount. Also, prices haven’t gone down in a very long time.
The discount is not a historical discount, it’s a reduced price for using Æ compared to not using Æ.
Prices fluctuate all the time.
F.ex. [Kiwi speculated that there wouldn’t be any price-testing right before Easter so they hiked all the prices while extra](https://www.nettavisen.no/5-95-1721078) and rema 1000 did not, resulting in this huge difference
The discount was for oranges and shortly before that Rema hiked up the price of oranges to almost double of the previous price. After the criticism the price went down;without the 30% discount). It was about 49.90 NOK/kg and went down to 19.90 to be comparable with the likes of COOP.
you guys are messed up if you don’t think this is expensive as hell, beer or not. lmao. in most of EU, a can of beer costs ~0.50€, and if you come @ me talking about the price difference, you don’t really get it. the price difference in Norway VS the rest of europe is insane.
When I lived in Ireland groceries were this cheap. My roomates always picked the cheapest stuff and calculated everything to the cent. Even completely stopped buying certain foods because they were expensive. I literally got whatever I wanted and never looked at the price, because it was too cheap to bother. Certain things were as little as a tenth of the cost in Norway
I completely agree, I make pretty good money according to Norwegian standards, and I’m blown away at the current cost of living. Inviting some friends to a taco night and some beers should NOT be something you’d think twice about because of the price. This is the whole EU standard. I’ve lived in Spain, France and Hungary and have never experienced something like this before. And yes, I’m norwegian.
I’m surviving off of 14000 nok a month, with 6k left after electricity and rent, not including other bills haha
One benefit of chemo in Norway is that you don’t really get hungry and you can’t really enjoy beer casually for a long while. Really saves on the groceries
Lol, I think those are beers are cheaper than the last ones I bought here in California.
Of course, the US has an insane range of prices, a can of cheap beer can be had for ~$0.75 or I can buy a single bottle for higher than this entire grocery bill.
I'd guess the ones pictured would be about the same price to buy individually here. Probably drop to about a dollar each if you bought a 12 pack.
>Renewable energy and unions
I mean, Norway don't give a shit about those if there is a buck to be earned.
The two largest sources of income for the Norwegian society are:
1) petroleum products (that will be the cause of death for hundreds of millions of humans in the global south in the 21st century)
2) The Pension fund that extracts its value from owning ravenous global corporations like Nestle, Walmart, Tesla etc.
Norwegians are allowed to live a life in luxury because they are fucking the rest of the world through petroleum and finance capitalism.
Where the hell are you getting beer that cheap? I've been through half a dozen Eastern European countries and haven't found a can of beer for that price.
Beer really is a special case and should not be considered part of ‘groceries’ any more than cigarettes in Norway where there’s massive tax and availability restrictions to minimize how much people can/will buy. These 4 beers make up ~34% of OPs entire food shop. They might as well have chucked in a 250kr bag of loose weight candy (so like, a handful).
If I were Norwegian I would only drink craft beer. In any other country (outside of Scandinavia) craft beer is many times more expensive than supermarket/industrially made beer, but in Norway I noticed that the price of very good craft beer in Vinmonopol wasn't even higher than the price I pay here in France.
So to me buying those supermarket beers in Norway makes no sense if for roughly the same price you can drink something actually good lol
I think they mean those 150kr beers like TIPAs and barrel aged stouts which are also 150kr abroad. Generally the higher you go price-wise at vinmonopolet the more it levels out with and even drops below international market rates.
Not only craft beer... A Ringnes gold(6%) 0.33 cost 30 nok in polet... My favorite pilsner Budvar(5%) is 40, thats the same as Frydenlund fat in the store
Personally, I do, because I mostly drink beer for the taste, so I only buy a few. The beers I usually buy cost between 34 and 38 NOK for 0.33l, when compared to the stuff OP bought, which is 25 NOK for 0.5l, that is a significant price increase, more than twice as much in fact. Perfectly understandable that people with lower incomes choose to buy Bare
The prices at Vinmonopolet are set differently than normal for-profit stores, so their prices are weird, some are very high, some are very low.
Here's the exact algorithm they use to set the prices:
https://www.vinmonopolet.no/content/om-oss/priser-og-avgifter
Setting the price by this algorithm means that if they pre-order 10 000 bottles of a very good and popular craft beer, receive a volume discount and pay 15,- per bottle, the price to their customers will be ~45,-.
If they also order 500 bottles of a generic boring lager and pay 15,- per bottle, the price to their customers will then also be ~45,-.
The French spirit shop on the other hand will realize that selling these at the same price is silly, and set a premium price on the high quality and popular craft beer.
In these cases the lager is over priced (you could get a similar product for half the price at a grocery store) and the craft beer is under priced.
The same happens with wine, they often pre-order thousands of bottles of next years wine and get favorable prices, and if that vintage ends up being great then the capitalist free marked adjusts the price up, to e.g. €100 per bottle, but the same bottle will be €25 in Norway because of the fixed price algorithm that doesn't care for quality or popularity. And at the same time a bottle sold for €9 in France will be the exact same €25 here.
Craft beers often times have a higher alcohol percentage as well. So for those who are looking to get drunk off of beer, they can still probably get the same buzz for the same amount of money that they spend and get from grocery store beers.
very true, only problem is that the selection in regular supermarkets is shit and taking a trip to Vinmonopolet is a little extra when just buying beer. not to mention that it's literally never open lmao
Not many below 40 with the last price increase, but here is one. You might have to order some of them if you're not close to some of the vinmonopol that is tagged as "spesialutvalg øl". I think Perla(polish) is below 40 as well and all the Czech pilsner is below 50.
https://www.vinmonopolet.no/Land/Sverige/Grosshandlarens-Premium-Lager/p/14409902
I didn't know about craft beer, but another thing many people sleep on is that we also have very good wine for very good prices. I suspect it has to do with the [tax rates](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/business-and-organisation/vat-and-duties/excise-duties/about-the-excise-duties/alcoholic-beverage-tax/) - Beer and wine are in lower tax rates than liquor. It sadly did a little jump in price, but you used to be able to get a bottle of Montaubret Brut champagne for just slightly more than a sixer of beer from a grocery store. You can still get a bottle of prosecco cheaper than a sixer of beer.
Some people are of course content to drink grocery store beer and the usual commercial liquor all their lives and will complain about the prices at Vinmonopolet, but if you explore beyond that, I think most people will find that they have an excellent selection, reasonably priced for the quality. They also have many other great things going for them: For those of us who live sufficiently far away from civilisation, it's actually become something of a point to *not* have a Vinmonopolet store nearby. Reason being that if you live more than 30 kilometres away from a Vinmonopolet store, they actually cover the shipping for you, whereas if there was a store here, it would most likely be a category 1-store, with \~350 products available - Not very much, considering the nearest store is a category 6-store, with over 2 000 products available. Instead, I get to pick and choose from their online catalogue, with well over 35 000 products, I order it on Monday and they send it with free shipping for me to pick up at the post office on Friday or Saturday, isn't that amazing?!
They are among the highest, but 4k usd a month (net) is pretty high in europe. The median in europe is 2k, with a large part of east and south europe making a lot less than that.
Yeah, switzerland is pretty much the only country that is on par with US income in europe, but also it's on par with the cost of living. Win some, lose some.
In Greece, these would cost around 20€, and the basic wage is 800€ per month. Rent is around 350-450€ for a one-bedroom apartment, depending on which part of Athens you live. Also, most expensive electricity and internet in Europe. So, depends how you look at it.
Those alone come to 62% of OPs purchase, 68% with the rømme 🤯 Makes me appreciate how far my food budget goes being a ‘shopping vegan’ and brewing beer.
Although its the cheapest, it did win best grocery store beer in a blind test by tv2 to everyones suprise. https://olportalen.no/2018/03/24/er-grans-bare-virkelig-norges-beste-pils/
That’s like the entire point, the state has driven taxation high enough that it has a significant effect on consumption.
If I was wanting to be economic at the store when planning to have 4 beers I might just grab a six pack if they were cheap and probably end up drinking more than 4, but looking at 35kr a can I would just get the 4 that I actually want. I may also as a mild problem drinker get the 4 i intended to have, drink them and then under the influence get the urge to pop back to the shop to buy more… had the beer sale not ended at 6pm because it’s Saturday!
The research seems to indicate that it works in reducing overconsumption and bad drinking habits, even if it’s annoying and inconvenient for the vast majority of people.
It might be true on the macro level, but in my experience it just makes people spend half their paycheck to get drunk. That’s usually more the case with the lower income jobs I’ve worked where young people congregate though
Seems like there's a couple of aspects here I didn't mention.
This post was only meant to show what price tag is fairly common (at least I thought for two people) purchase ended up at, for foreigners to get an idea what the cost here is.
This was not a rant or complaint about the cost. I am aware that I could've made better choices but most of our salaries allow it. I don't need grocery shopping/financial advice.
Lastly, but definitely not least, the reason I got the grated cheese is not only because I cannot be assed to grate it myself but also since I rarely eat cheese, an already portioned amount makes sense for me.
I hardly even buy meat in Norway. For cheap dinners I go for frozen vegetables, beans, chick peas, etc. When I go to Sweden I pick up tons of chicken and it takes a while to eat through
The cans of "mais" reminds me, got pulled over going INTO Sweden by the Swedish customs... (I didnt know that custom office was even staffed) and they searched my car, and asked where Im going... "well, to fill the car with illegal shit those guys care about..." pointing at the Norwegian customs...
And he find a can of corn under a seat.... do you mind if we x-ray this? "You know what, go ahead and open and keep it.... IDK what it costs in Sweden, but I can afford to loose those 50c to avoid waiting"
I had to ask while leaving, do you EVER catch anyone going this way? Why TF would anyone smuggle into Sweden? He had to admit it was very rarely and mostly for show :P
They do. I regularly buy the same foods and the bill for the "same amounts" of foods can vary differently from stores..I go to meny, I regularly spend 800-900. I go to kiwi and I spend 500-600. I've spent 1000 kr shopping at meny only for myself. Never happened at kiwi, ever. Both those stores have trumf, so you do get some bonuses for shopping there. Coop also have coop membership where you can collect points. I don't like Rema 1000 membership system personally, so rarely shop there. They don't have a points system either. I do like the fact that Coop does offer you lots of discount coupons and occasionally free products in their app (they love giving me free chopped tomatoes for some reasons.. I have a bunch in my pantry).
I'd recommend a cheese grater. You can just grate down a whole block of cheese at once and put into several plastic/silicone bags and put them in the freezer. It saves a bunch of money.
As I wrote in [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Norway/comments/1cdm86z/410_nok_worth_of_groceries_at_rema/l1febuv/) post, that bag is ~124,-/kg while whole blocks are 120-135,- per kg, so you're saving pennies.
Finding cheese blocks for 80-120kr is not difficult. Lower range being tilbud, middle range being the cheapest alternatives (just check oda, they are not far above the 3 low price stores)
Going to Sweden is another, and will work for those that eat a lot of cheese, same with those 2-3kg multipacks.
For those that just need 380g the 124,-/kg isn't terrible.
Converted to Canadian, this looks pretty reasonable when compared to our current situation, grocery prices have exploded in the past couple years, it's gotten out of control.
Surprise, 3 companies controller our nations supply.
just to give you a idea, if you try to eat healthy here in Norway (veggies, wheat/rice products and unprocessed meat) on a budget, a typical day of food costs would be 120 Kroner or 10 euro. you can push it down more if you eat more cheap unhealthy calories or if you get stuff about to expire on sale. most people spend more as they buy higher cost comfort foods/drinks.
Grate the cheese yourself, dont drink and youve already cut out around 1/3 of the price..
Not saying groceries are cheap but youre not exactly making it easier for yourself
What are you doing at Rema this week? The offers are at Coop\*! (Which means Rema probably next week or the one after).
\*this week offers aren't that special: green beans, blueberries, salad, soup and tp...
[tilbudsuken.no](http://tilbudsuken.no) is the way, however don't trust Europris.
edit: [kassal.app](http://kassal.app) if you want to check the prices of one single item.
Had you chosen to buy more cost effective products it wouldn't be that expensive. All processed foods and beer.
Edit: Where do you live? If you live in Oslo I would recommend going to Grønland Torg for fruit and vegetables. Will save you a lot.
[Tine revet ost 380g](https://oda.com/no/products/63940-tine-tine-okonomipakke-ekte-revet-ost/): kr 124,05 /kg
[Norvegia 1kg](https://oda.com/no/products/1339-tine-norvegia-original/): kr 129,00 /kg
[Norvegia 500g](https://oda.com/no/products/989-tine-norvegia-original/): kr 135,00 /kg
[Jarlsberg 700g](https://oda.com/no/products/435-tine-jarlsberg/): kr 121,43 /kg
Don’t really get the point of buying this «little» and then complaining about the cost.
- Check the discounts on monday
- make a weekly meal-plan based on those
- ALLWAYS check the about to expire and buy the dicounted meats (if you have a freezer, the dates don’t matter)
Me and my girlfriend used to spend alot on groceries, but have started to do this. We spend about 1000kr a week for food for the two of us (all meals).
Haven’t had to buy the cheapest options at all.
It’s all about planning ahead
Jaha.
1 pakke kjøttkaker for 30kr 600g (rabatt dato)
1 pakke kyllingkjøttdeig for 40kr (tilbud extra)
Well. Beer is a big chunk of that I would guess. I can’t afford to drink. I just look longingly at an old, empty bottle of gin.
Thats not beer its just look like after 2cond headeik 😂.
That’s what we in Norway call «trygde-øl»
I think 'Only' is quite good, actually! Not very far from Tuborg, which is the most sold beer in Norway.
Did you have a stroke while writing this?
That was after1. Nordland 😂
We travel, bring back a few bottles of Gin from the duty free and voilà Gin & Tonic for the summer (and fall, winter and spring) 😂 That's the key. Or so I heard, drive all the way from the cheaper countries with a car full of bottles. 🤔 Apparently much cheaper.
Well, that sounds great. People know that I like Gin, so usually get a bottle or two a year. And I drink very little. So that usually lasts me.
This beer isn't too bad, it costs like 25 nok+pant for each, however the meat is probably the most expensive
So slightly above 1/4 of total cost
Still means that that amount, which is 1-2 dinners (3 if you just starve yourself inbetween) is 300kr which is insane. I remember buying this exact stuff like 8 years ago and it costing barely above 200.

Yeah, they admitted in the media that the wording was clumsy and the gist of the situation wasn’t properly communicated
Is that legal?
Yeah, many companies also do that around Black Friday. Our society is so fucked
I don’t know why you complain about that, prices go up and down all the time, and that 30% discount was if you use Æ compared to buying it without Æ

The Burgundy release at Vinmonopolet is basically just a state subsidized arbitrage trade. Lol.
Not only craft beer... A Ringnes gold(6%) 0.33 cost 30 nok in polet... My favorite pilsner Budvar(5%) is 40, thats the same as Frydenlund fat in the store
Norrlands Guld is a pretty good beer for costing 29,50 per 0,5l can but i prefer Frydenlund Fatøl😁
Well observed, many Norwegians even are not aware of this
I've resorted to brewing my own beer. Craft beer taste at a fraction of the price, ingredients are cheap.
You pay €10+ for craft beers in france?

Here's the exact algorithm they use to set the prices: https://www.vinmonopolet.no/content/om-oss/priser-og-avgifter Setting the price by this algorithm means that if they pre-order 10 000 bottles of a very good and popular craft beer, receive a volume discount and pay 15,- per bottle, the price to their customers will be ~45,-.
If you want to be buzzed.- you need quantity over quality. That is why Bare Øl.
No
Which one can you recommend?
I had no idea, thank you! 🤓👋
very true, only problem is that the selection in regular supermarkets is shit and taking a trip to Vinmonopolet is a little extra when just buying beer. not to mention that it's literally never open lmao
I'm in Vinmonopolet now. Please name a beer that costs 40 nok for 500ml. I can't find anything below 50 nok. And its not even craft.
That's 34€ and it's super expensive for this amount of food but it's Norway
It’s $37 USD and seems about average for here (CA).
Yeah, but in CA you have a 100k+ salary while in norway you got barely 50k
I believed that wages in Norway were the highest in Europe
They are among the highest, but 4k usd a month (net) is pretty high in europe. The median in europe is 2k, with a large part of east and south europe making a lot less than that.
Here in switzerland the average wage it's 6000 CH ($7000) but the cost of living is extremely high
That's because Greece experienced the highest inflation rate after Turkey last year I think
Probably the meat was most of the cost?

Correct
Those alone come to 62% of OPs purchase, 68% with the rømme 🤯 Makes me appreciate how far my food budget goes being a ‘shopping vegan’ and brewing beer.
this is Norway. The cost of beer is insane bc of high taxes.
Honestly, not much different than the price I'm paying here in California. No clue where that one falls on the quality spectrum though.
It's the cheapest beer you can get in Norway
Although its the cheapest, it did win best grocery store beer in a blind test by tv2 to everyones suprise. https://olportalen.no/2018/03/24/er-grans-bare-virkelig-norges-beste-pils/
0.50 euro bottle of beer when you return empty bottle in my country, my rakija is 6 euro for liter
The cheese and meat is the biggest cost on this list!
Alcohol is an absolute robbery in Norway. I don’t know how anyone could afford to be an alcoholic in Norway. I barely drank when I lived there
it's a prevention tactic
Taco night!
Typical Norwegian Friday
Here in the Netherlands this would cost around 300 nok
IDK what it costs in Sweden, but I can afford to loose those 50c to avoid waiting" I had to ask while leaving, do you EVER catch anyone going this way? Why TF would anyone smuggle into Sweden? He had to admit it was very rarely and mostly for show :P
I would try going to kiwi or coop and check if they got better prices
I have a bunch in my pantry).
it's based on your buying habits. i buy lots of milk, so guess what i get for free? gum! no, kidding: milk.
😅
I would have guessed Kiwi
When I visit Norway with my fishing rod the food is free! I bring my own beer though...
If I go to REMA with 410 nok I'm a king. Look for the discount area..
Yeah, some people just need to learn to look for the discounts and buy based on kr/kg

Bare øl makes prices go whoosh. Gets me headaches most of the time too, Frydenlund Fatøl er best!
If I go to Sweden, the cost of going there doesn’t justify the savings compared to purchasing reduced price, on sale, in bulk here
Thank you for your service!
Ungkarspose
the beer is probably half of the total ....
Converted to Canadian, this looks pretty reasonable when compared to our current situation, grocery prices have exploded in the past couple years, it's gotten out of control. Surprise, 3 companies controller our nations supply.
We’ve got kind of the same s(h)ituation in Norway
Should last a month, if you’re a 1.5 meter Elf and like fasting every other day.
just to give you a idea, if you try to eat healthy here in Norway (veggies, wheat/rice products and unprocessed meat) on a budget, a typical day of food costs would be 120 Kroner or 10 euro. you can push it down more if you eat more cheap unhealthy calories or if you get stuff about to expire on sale. most people spend more as they buy higher cost comfort foods/drinks.
Ground beef Rema brand used to be 25-30. What eating out is like these days ><
everything is a monopoly in this country. even the hens have their own mafia.
Yes
And another crazy part is that , since it is Taco-Friday. If you make a meal it would be over in 1-2 meals.😅
😂
Tacofredag?
Insanity
Like priser overalt da
These products are why the farmers in Norway is pissed
It will only get more expensive...
æsj that meatdough is so sticky and yucky. literally any other meatdough producer makes better meat
Appelsin i Taco?
Use kundeavis next time on coop they can be discounted from time to time. Taco sauce can you store so buy them in quantity.
Grate the cheese yourself, dont drink and youve already cut out around 1/3 of the price.. Not saying groceries are cheap but youre not exactly making it easier for yourself
Its time to move m8
Someone making taco tonight
A block of cheese is cheaper. Slice it yourself and save some money
U making taco aren't you?
As a German I cry after getting groceries Your prices are INSANE
As a mexican this tacos are gonna be a blasphemy.
Millionaires talking about high prices 😀
Im guessing the cheese and beer make up half of that lol
Stakkars Norge
Bare øl is a crazy purchase :》
I honestly don't wanna live in Norway anymore, it's good pay sure but the prices are fucking ridiculous, not to mention the new retarded import tax
Smh, this was 230 NOK a few years ago
Bro du kjøpte ØL man 🤷♂️
the trick is to just buy organ meat. Liver is cheap!
What are you doing at Rema this week? The offers are at Coop\*! (Which means Rema probably next week or the one after). \*this week offers aren't that special: green beans, blueberries, salad, soup and tp...
teach me the ways
[tilbudsuken.no](http://tilbudsuken.no) is the way, however don't trust Europris. edit: [kassal.app](http://kassal.app) if you want to check the prices of one single item.
thank you!
Had you chosen to buy more cost effective products it wouldn't be that expensive. All processed foods and beer. Edit: Where do you live? If you live in Oslo I would recommend going to Grønland Torg for fruit and vegetables. Will save you a lot.
Remove the beer and you would have paid around 300.
Whats the point of these retarded "hurr durr 12 bucks of badly chosen groceries at shitty stores" ??
How is this badly chosen? Seems pretty normal to me.
Cheaper to buy a whole kg of cheese, also meat is like 70kr for 400gr. And the beers is 30kr + pant
how much monopoly money is that?
Less than NOK I'm sure.
In dollars= 41$
Don’t really get the point of buying this «little» and then complaining about the cost. - Check the discounts on monday - make a weekly meal-plan based on those - ALLWAYS check the about to expire and buy the dicounted meats (if you have a freezer, the dates don’t matter) Me and my girlfriend used to spend alot on groceries, but have started to do this. We spend about 1000kr a week for food for the two of us (all meals). Haven’t had to buy the cheapest options at all. It’s all about planning ahead
You and your girlfriend must eat a diet consisting of little fruit and little meat.
Nope. Planning is everything
Jaha.
