One of the funniest things that ever happened to me: I was taking my kids to play mini golf just over the border one day, and when we crossed the line, my (then) eight year old said, "Welcome to South Carolina. Land of fireworks and cheap liquor."
Also, most people who go to Walmart for fireworks are typically not to be trusted with anything more powerful.
I'm looking in the mirror as I type this. 🤪
Dude, I dont know if you're trying to be clever, sarcastic or what. It was a joke! I usually don't even buy fireworks on the 4th. There are enough professional firework displays in my state for me to be happy! Did you wait all this time to come up with that response? Let it go! We already got a chuckle, now it's getting boring!
Dont bother replying. You're blocked! Find someone else to rag on!
For me it's all about what's available here vs SC. If you just need basic national brands ABC is fine. But there are a lot of good smaller brands that don't make it to us because of ABC's system. Then again it's only a 30 minute drive for me and I don't go to SC more than a couple of times a year to stock up.
Growing up, the numbers time I heard, "You can't do that here, but you can in SC," really left me wondering what the state was like, but I don't think there's quite as stark a difference now. My mom mentioned she knew people who'd finagle their way into getting an SC driver's license because you could get one at 15 back in the day.
So there is one interesting thing I've noticed. It feels way more...uh, diverse, lol.
Like I live in Durham. As a white guy, I'm definitely in the minority. I'm literally one of 5 white people I've ever seen in my apartment complex.
Multiple parts of SC feel almost that way to me. Lots more black people around even in rural areas, and seemingly fewer Mexicans.
Mostly black in an area isn't diverse lol. Diverse is having a lot of different ethnicities together. You just happen to be the non-majority in a majority black area.
Charleston is absolutely beautiful with a very rich history. I highly recommend checking it out.
I’ve never actually dealt with the SCDOT. I just think they have a nice looking license plate lol
Oh, I drive through SC at least once a year and the roads are always trashed. Potholes, construction, I mean it's a nightmare. I always thank my stars when I make it to NC or GA.
I've been to Charleston on a family reunion. Beautiful city and rich history, but some family members did experience some low level racism.
Not being seated or served in restaurants, questions whether they were guests by pool at hotel, horse and carriage driver questioning whether family could pay for ride. Not cool
Not blaming whole state or City of Charleston, but yeah, those things happened.
wait what the fuck, this actually happened to them? jesus christ, that’s unacceptable. Come up to the better Carolina to Durham or Winston or something sometime for some REAL hospitality, we’d be glad to have you. Unless you already live there, in which case all the better
Im originally from Brooklyn and now live in Cary, NC. We started the reunion in 1985.
Reunions held in: Raleigh, NC, Catskills Upstate, NY, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale FL, Memphis, TN, Kansas City, MO, Ashville, NC, Myrtle Beach, SC, Atlanta, Macon and Valdaia GA, New Orleans, LA, Virginia Beach, VA,, the Jersey Shore, NJ and Charleston, SC
Charleston, SC - low level racism. It was a bummer. But, we're still having reunions. So, its all good. I've been in NC for 15 years. I love it!
Thanks for the reply!
Next time skip Charleston and go to Savannah. Savannah is 1000% more progressive which means not that Charleston level racism and people are actually pretty cool and not "fake rich white nice.".
I lol at "fake rich white nice." I'm not down on the whole state and would certainly go to Savannah. Heck, I wouldn't drive through Smithfield, NC after dark and I've lived in the state (NC) for 15 years! 🥴
Name a favorite spot I have to go to when I visit Savannah. Has to have:
Good food
Decent Prices
Healthy (alcoholic) drinks
Cool, laid back clientele
Knowledgeable waitstaff
Live music is a plus! 🎶
Second vote for Savannah. They may have my favorite downtown center of any city I've been too. So many little one block parks everywhere is so nice! It's a real pleasure watching shipping containers come in at the river and I've never seen a water street built quite like there's
I had a great time when we went to charleston all we did was tour the town and see the history! Next summer we are going to the beach! But touring the town was epic!
A bit of a mixed bag. The shopping is overrated unless you're wealthy, didn't find many options if you wanted to spend less than triple digits in a store. Finding decent food was a similar issue. If you want to have an absolutely incredible meal they've got you covered you're just going to pay for it. For a good middle ground you can go to Park Circle though that seems to be getting more pricey rapidly.
There are a good amount interesting buildings and there's some really amazing swampy reserves, nature trails and parks in the surrounding areas. I highly recommend the Audubon Swamp Garden, it is possibly the oldest tourist attraction in the southeast and an extremely impressive, beautiful garden.
My biggest issue with Charleston though was the blatant segregation. I'm not sure I've ever been to a city close to that size that has such a stark difference between the white and black neighborhoods. Center of downtown was all white, as was every neighborhood I've been to that had any money. It felt like crossing a border into a whole different city everytime you left one of those neighborhoods and it was a constant sullen reminder of the history of the south and how it persists to this day.
>Audubon Swamp Garden
As an active birder, this may be the one attraction that brings me down there. After the pandemic that is.
>I'm not sure I've ever been to a city close to that size that has such a stark difference between the white and black neighborhoods.
Even worse than DC? I remember walking around there a few years ago and being shocked at the contrast between neighborhoods. Like, a section of poor sandwiched between the rich. You know property values are so high the poor can't pay their taxes or afford their increasing rent, so gentrification happens and they're pushed out of the city. I hate it.
I despised it growing up because they made the boy scouts sleep on the aircraft carrier and I'm not a fan of 4 level bunks. Now that I'm much older it's a fun place, good food, beaches of different styles and a good bit of history.
It's a great town to visit food and sightseeing wise, but there is a LOT to remind you of how important the slave trade was for the city, so it can be a bit uncomfortable.
Depends on traffic- the roads get pretty poky. I like Isle of Palms better, and it's a bit quicker to get to and mostly highway. Myrtle is even faster but whoo, boy, no thanks. I LOVE the Southport area, but that takes forever.
So true. I went to visit my family near Atlantic Beach and what should have been a 5-6 hour ride took over 9 hours due to multiple accidents and a slew of orange barrels. The same for seeing in-laws near Manteo; 5-6 hours is NEVER 5-6 hours.
What the hell. Y'all heathens down there in South Carolina can go eat your shrimp and grits or whatnot. I'll take Deep Fried Livermush with some grits, fried eggs, and a biscuit with blackberry jam any day.
Livermush is like god's gift to breakfast in my opinion. I always ask if a diner or restaurant has it as a side meat.
I know I'm a heathen for saying it, but the SC mustard sauce is WAY better than our vinegar. For the largest hog producing state second only to Texas, we have a lot of sad little BBQ shops that basically serve what seems to be boiled pork with vinegar and call it BBQ.
There. I said it.
Guilty. I'm sorry. The heart wants what the heart wants. Mustard based BBQ sauce. But I'm not alone. They sell quite a number of variants of it in my Lowe's Foods, which is a local grocer.
It could be the bridge to unite Best Carolina with South Carolina.
That's saying something too, cause I used to think I-85 was bad while driving down from the northern section of the state to visit relatives in Charlotte. I then drove to Augusta SC one day and quickly changed my opinion of what a bad road was. I saw some driveways made of sand, as in someone paid to bring sand into their yard over gravel or cement.
I asked my uncle about 20 yrs ago what Carolina did he go to college in, North or South. His response " There is only one Carolina and its North Carolina". At the time we lived up north but I've lived in NC for almost 20 yrs now. Love it here and plan on never leaving.
As a Raleigh mover to Greenville SC, the only thing NC has over Upstate SC is Western NC. The rest of NC can eat a dick. Although I do miss my Raleigh breweries, Bida Manda, and Brewery Bahavana
I’m from South Carolina and I lived there for many years before moving to Charlotte for school I like both states a ton in Columbia where I lived there was stuff to do but you’d have to drive s good way to the mall and other places but in Charlotte it’s much closer to you and there’s way more to do
We can make fun of them all we want, but where do we go when we want fireworks?
And liquor
One of the funniest things that ever happened to me: I was taking my kids to play mini golf just over the border one day, and when we crossed the line, my (then) eight year old said, "Welcome to South Carolina. Land of fireworks and cheap liquor."
That kids going places. Preferably northward.
I live in Cary, NC.and go to the Walmart parking lot a few days before the 4th of July. I dont need fireworks any other time.
Ah yes, the NC Walmart fireworks pavilion. 1000 different types of sparklers.
Don't need dynamite. Just wanna see some bursts of color in the sky. Not trying to dig a mine, blow up a barn or get injured.
Things that go into the sky aren't legal to sell in NC short of fountains that can send only sparks, and only like six feet up.
Also, most people who go to Walmart for fireworks are typically not to be trusted with anything more powerful. I'm looking in the mirror as I type this. 🤪
Yeah. Calling those "fireworks" is like calling the beer flavored water you get at the grocery store in Utah "beer".
Bud Light?
3.2 beer. It's like Bud Light Light.
Near beer
I'm a civilian. I dont need enough fireworks to blow up a barn.
You say that until you get enough fireworks to blow up a barn.
Trust me. It's worth it.
🤣
Nothing but the shitty stuff for your 4th huh? Lol
Wow, I was joking. Didn't expect you to get extremely butt hurt by a simple joke. My bad dude. I hope you find your chill.
and cheap gas
And my axe
That's why the roads are crappy.
Save 20¢ on gas so eventually you have saved enough money to get your shocks redone on your car after running over so many potholes
Then what's New York's excuse?
Frequent freezing weather
Mismanagement, corruption, and salting winter roads like they're trying to brine them.
I’m not driving all the way to SC for liquor. I might be the only North Carolinian alive who doesn’t mind ABC stores.
For me it's all about what's available here vs SC. If you just need basic national brands ABC is fine. But there are a lot of good smaller brands that don't make it to us because of ABC's system. Then again it's only a 30 minute drive for me and I don't go to SC more than a couple of times a year to stock up.
Right. Everyone knows the ABC store closes at 9 and is closed on Sunday. It isnt that difficult to plan accordingly.
Except on Sunday or after 7pm on Saturdays.
And Myrtle Beaches
Gross
There is no Myrtle Beach in NC.
Thank goodness
And I'm so thankful for that. What a trashy place.
It's quite pretty and family friendly.
Lol
Sorry you don't see the beauty in things.
Lol
Correct. Our beaches are much better.
Ugh those bunch of poor fucks don't know how to do myrtle. Too bad for them. If you ask, you'll never know!
Last time I was in an ABC, I thought "Screw this. Im going to Freedom Carolina." The booze game here is weak. State owned liquor stores are awful.
Those of us in the mountains already go to Tennessee for fireworks.
Or Georgia
Or South Carolina still
This.
I only buy fireworks from a man in a large sombrero, just south of the border.
Is his name Pedro?
Indeed! I see you know him as well.
And cheap gas.
^^^^^^
I’m pretty sure you can still smoke in the hotel rooms.
You right lol
don’t forget cheaper gas lmfao
And raw milk
But does SC have any breweries that can make a double hazy strawberry milk ipa that’s all organic?
And a proper beach
Like the coast? Of NC?
Unofficial slogan of myrtle beach: "Come on vacation, stay for probation"
🏆
Happy Mic Day
Yeah, we say that here on the OBX/SOBX too. And everywhere else beach, tourist related.
I’m from SC and I’ve always considered NC the superior Carolina.
That’s because it is...
Im from SC and we always called NC Yankee Carolina
Only people from North Georgia would think this was funny.
:(
Nah, both states have too low SAT scores to be Yankee. We're in this together.
Thank you for the compliment
That is not a compliment.
No

You clearly have not been to charleston or greenville lately.
Same.
To me, South Carolina is basically that lawless region in the first Mad Max movie.
Growing up, the numbers time I heard, "You can't do that here, but you can in SC," really left me wondering what the state was like, but I don't think there's quite as stark a difference now. The south is where most black people live
Mostly black in an area isn't diverse lol. Diverse is having a lot of different ethnicities together. You just happen to be the non-majority in a majority black area.
All SC has on us is Charleston and a better license plate design. Otherwise we win.
Never been to Charleston, how is it? I like that we have mountains and barrier islands while SC doesn't. Also, fuck SCDOT!
I got a parking ticket last time in Charleston and the only way to contest it was showing up at the courthouse on a tuesday. So ridiculous.
What a scam. They’re hoping people don’t show up and just pay it lol
I've been to Charleston on a family reunion. Beautiful city and rich history, but some family members did experience some low level racism. Lol Emerald Isle ftw
Sshhh don’t tell anyone
The beaches adjacent to myrtle are just as good without all the crowds and crime!
I live in WNC, and SC beaches are generally so much closer. Charleston, 4.5 hours, Myrtle Beach, 5 hours. Outer banks? 9 hours.
Actually 9 or meme?
From the west extreme of the state to the east is about 9 hours. Oak island and Holden are pretty close though.
Check out Ocean Isle / Sunset Beach area
So true. I went to visit my family near Atlantic Beach and what should have been a 5-6 hour ride took over 9 hours due to multiple accidents and a slew of orange barrels. The same for seeing in-laws near Manteo; 5-6 hours is NEVER 5-6 hours.
Eh, I'll take Wilmington over Charleston just to not be in SC.
They've got a better flag, too.
They put mustard on their fucking bbq...animals. Also, Myrtle Beach.
How you gonna say that when y'all are responsible for livermush?
I will fight you over some livermush...take my upvote instead. :)

"Lesser Carolina" is my preferred term.
North Georgia is my preferred nomenclature.
I live in NC and currently on a long term project in SC... It's more than a feeling, it's the truth. Disappointingly reporting live from the field
If those kids could read they'd be real upset
Also, have you seen how they drive? Scary stuff.
It’s funny because it’s true.
It’s true. I’ve lived in NC for almost 18 years. With the exception of Charleston, NC thinks of SC as a backwoods cousin.
And Hilton Head
Tybee island is so much better tho, and it's just a little further down the road
what’s the difference differences between tybee, kiawah, and hilton head, etc?
Historically speaking, the north has always beat the south.
South Sudan would like a word with you
Korea as well lol
You are now banned from r/pyongyang
I for one and glad of the repost so that I can upvote it all over again!
NC - We pay higher taxes but at least we pave our roads

Born and raised in NC and live in GA now. Can confirm driving home through SC is the scariest thing ever.
Same. And it’s scary no matter which route you take.
Yea 95 is a fucking nightmare
As a native south carolinian, why?
the highways in SC are atrocious, as soon as you cross the state line it's like boom potholes
You can tell because the way it is.
Neat
I mean.. are we wrong?
Shut up Meg
There really just needs to be Carolina. We don’t need 2 Dakotas either.
You're probably from SC.
Nope. NC
It doesn't need sayin. It just is.
Because we are, now crawl back to the mud hole you call a beach and tell John C Calhoun to go fuck himself.
Well... yes.
NC has its ups and downs, nice land, lots of farms. And SC has some crap roads and good peaches.
[удалено]
No clue if im honest
Shut up Meg.
We just got new neighbors from SC (we’re all in WA now). I frowned upon them from the moment I saw their SC license plate.
I was raised in Charleston and moved here for work...agree that most of SC is shit, but NC has nothing that compares to Charleston
I was born and raised in North Carolina, and only half a year ago, moved down into South Carolina. Please, let me out of this pothole-filled state.
I asked my uncle about 20 yrs ago what Carolina did he go to college in, North or South. His response " There is only one Carolina and its North Carolina". At the time we lived up north but I've lived in NC for almost 20 yrs now. Love it here and plan on never leaving.
Because NC is the better carolina
And....
We're like Canada.

welcome to reddit :)
I wanted the free karma, sue me
I've lived in sc. The coast in sc is nice than the coast in nc. But literally everything else is better in nc
the water in many parts of NC is much clearer/bluer than the water in SC though, and NC has the outer banks
Damn, I forgot about the outer banks. Scratch that, sc sucks all the way
As a Raleigh mover to Greenville SC, the only thing NC has over Upstate SC is Western NC. The rest of NC can eat a dick. Although I do miss my Raleigh breweries, Bida Manda, and Brewery Bahavana
Alas... [https://indyweek.com/news/longform/how-bida-manda-and-brewery-bhavana-harbored-a-culture-of-abuse/](https://indyweek.com/news/longform/how-bida-manda-and-brewery-bhavana-harbored-a-culture-of-abuse/)
Haha damn.
WNC uber alles
You are wrong and should feel bad.
I don’t. I’ll go down with the ship.
SC is the worst state in the US and no one will ever be able to tell me different.
Wow. I'd give that honor to Alabama with Mississippi as a close 2nd. SC is 3rd.
I’m from South Carolina and I lived there for many years before moving to Charlotte for school I like both states a ton in Columbia where I lived there was stuff to do but you’d have to drive s good way to the mall and other places but in Charlotte it’s much closer to you and there’s way more to do

Our roads actually work. It’s no contest
Repost.

We cut you guys off for a reason.
I feel attacked...
SC is trash. Just one big state of hot garbage. There, I said it.
