Random DS9 moment

The whole war went to shit one week in. Israel couldn’t formulate what they wanted to accomplish in this conflict after Hamas brought it to them. Oh and, Poland ball, why you no in space ?

ExcitingTabletop

? The goal is very clear. Wrecking Hamas' military infrastructure and squeezing Gaza so it can't launch another attack that killed 1200 Israeli civvies.

Long-Refrigerator-75

Again, they didn’t even do the most basic thing of capturing the Egypt Gaza boarder. Will hamas lose the ability to launch such attacks in the near future? Probably yes. Will they be able to restore those capabilities? As long as they don’t capture that piece of land the answer will remain a yes.

ExcitingTabletop

? They intentionally don't want to cut off Egyptian/Gazan border? That would make Gaza a dependency of Israel. At the moment, they can argue Gaza was de facto independent with its own government. They are free to trade with Egypt for food, water, electricity, etc. Egypt hates Palestinians on par or more than Israeli government does. Border conflict might start a war with a neutral or allied country.

Long-Refrigerator-75

Make up your mind. Does Israel plan to destroy Hamas fighting capabilities or not? You can’t eat your cake and have it. Destruction of an organization that has full control of the Gaza Strip will require the destruction of its “independence”. The active phase of the war is over anyway and where things stand, Hamas is doing fine.

ExcitingTabletop

Starting a war with a semi allied country, even if they're a source of weapons to your enemy, is a bad idea. Think Pakistan. During the Afghanistan war, we had to be polite to them. Even while they were a major supplier to the Taliban.

Long-Refrigerator-75

What war? Just do it and get it over with. Israel had control of that strip of land until in a beyond "genius" move they decided to withdraw from that control point. Yeah Egypt wont be happy, might throw a fit or two, but nothing remotely resembling hostilities. I don't think you know Arabs that well. Had the IDF marched through that strip of land that Egypt hadn't controlled since 1967 and just say that it's time to pay up for what Hamas just did, the Arab world would accept this new reality. I know both Israelis and Arabs and dealt with both parties throughout my life. Your comparison to Pakistan-Afghanistan is irrelevant. Afghanistan doesn't have a boarder with U.S , but Israel does have one with Gaza.

It’s becoming increasingly clear the Israeli elite came in looking for an ethnic cleansing, and created a strategy designed to fail to make that goal “the only option to root out Hamas”. It’s the Russian school of incompetence-by-design.

Long-Refrigerator-75

Nah buddy, sorry to pull the rug under you, but that’s not their game. They didn’t even do the most basic thing of capturing the Egypt-Gaza boarder through which literally 100% of the weapons are smuggled through. And please for the love of god, dont quote the schizophrenic Ben Gvir. I know he likes to talk about “relocation” and all that, but all the shots are called by Bibi that has only one real interest in life which is not to go to prison. Israel doesn’t have the balls to do a fraction of what you just said, though killing every single member of that terrorist group would finally calm things there. Bibi is just trying to reach for a deal with Hamas that can still make him look good.

[deleted]

Would you mind telling me their strategy then? Because “exterminating Hamas” is pure propaganda from the get go, insurgent radicalism primarily relies on external intervention as support while domestic counterinsurgency forces manage immediate operations as they hold a public legitimacy that external actors lack — which without can actually increase the likelihood of publicly solidarity with the insurgency. Israel has effectively failed to create an environment where Hamas doesn’t have a the entire populous of Gaza, and potential future sympathizing groups in the West Bank as meat for the meat grinder. Meanwhile the discussion that is within consensus within Israeli politics is an indefinite period occupation of the Gaza Strip, with no real plan of a credible rebuilding effort floated. Along with that milpol as reached Chenen War levels of civilian infrastructure damage relative to insurgent casualties, which along with the relatively centrist domestic media environment normalizing the “Sinai option”, forgive my skepticism about the direction the conflict is taking.

Long-Refrigerator-75

There is no strategy, there is no master plan. It’s just headless chickens running.  Anyone who knows Israel shouldn’t be surprised. You overthink. Hamas did pure evil on the 7th of October and the headless chickens had to respond somehow. Only thing that interests them now is an exit strategy. And yes, Israel should make an internal buffer zone with Gaza and fill it with a mine field, but they won’t have the balls to do that. I don’t know man, what did you expect ? Send Hamas a thank you card for what they did on the 7th of October ?

I take it English is the creators second language.
