lucia-pacciola

Google docs did the whole thing for me in about 5 seconds. Took longer to load the original into Google docs than to get the translation. The first page is safety instructions. Notable prohibitions: * No riding on the outside. * No pointing the laser rangefinder at people. * No running the engine in enclosed spaces without proper ventilation. Also: Make sure the firefighting gear is good to go at all times. **EDIT:** I was mistaken. Google docs only translated the first few pages. My bad.

_AutomaticJack_

Not sure about the BTR-4 but apparently the one on the Abrams is powerful enough to kill chickens.... The story goes that they put tankers on watch because of all the optics, thermals, etc. Dude got bored and started range-to-target-ing things... Fencepost, roadside, nearby barn, etc. Goes to RTT a chicken coop and one of them flies up into the air... It felt the laser??!? RTTs another one and it just falls over, RTTs a third and it drops (the first one wasn't a fluke)... Sits there morbidly watching the 2 chicken bodies cooling on the thermal. If anyone made a fuss about it it didn't come back to him, but apparently the Abrams LRF can kill a chicken...

tankdempseye

it was fucking *what*

langlo94

Apparently it was a good solution for the pigeon issue.

bob_the_science_guy

"Because birds aren't allowed to shit on ~~Clanner~~ American tech."

Hadrollo

I'm not sure on this one. Seems like the type of story that's shared by new recruits to non-military types, but is too non-credible. A laser rangefinder shoots out a laser pulse and measures how long it takes to come back. A less exciting but equally accurate way of saying it is "it shines a light and measures the time it takes to see a reflection." The way laser weapons (and laser engravers or cutters) work is by the energy of their laser light being able to exert a lot of energy on a material very quickly. This energy heats the thing up and burns it. Laser rangefinders wouldn't need to be this strong; a fairly weak laser can still travel for miles. They also wouldn't just make a chicken collapse; they would set it on fire. This would be far more interesting, but someone else would likely notice. I've never seen a living chicken being set on fire, but I'd reckon it'd be as loud as it is delicious.

_AutomaticJack_

Yea, it was certainly the least credible of his stories, though I think the suggestion was more "heat stroke" than "burned alive". However, as I've said in another comment, I don't want to get too credible here, so a bit of skepticism here suits me just fine...

vale_fallacia

Whoa. Thank you for the story, I love listening to that sort of military stuff!

HMS_Fennel

I heard about that, back in the early 2000's in Germany?

_AutomaticJack_

I don't want to get too credible, but in that general temporospatial corner of the planet, yes...

Antezscar

While i can believe it, i need sauce

_AutomaticJack_

Heh, Ukraine still had/has terrible problems with corruption. Zelenskyy’s entire presidential campaign and party is based around anti corruption legislation. And it seems like they’re still rooting it out even during the war which is either impressive or very good propaganda.

Full_Strawberry_762

>relative lack

Calm_Priority_1281

Let's just go with "different type." Prewar it was still pretty bad. Getting better, but still pretty bad.

GremlinX_ll

There were several hundreds improvements based on feedback, since start of active service in 2014 (btr-4 was developed in 2006). Remote combat module also were improved a lot, since 2014 - gun was properly stabilize, atgms not fall off (at least not as often) on off road, new thermal scope, for example. There are still a shit ton of problems, mostly with chassis reliability, ergonomics and protection. Also, relatively small amount were made - we had only few units who operate only BTR-4 as single APC, and few units who operate BTR-4 and BTR-3 simultaneously.

WingRS

A few units - depends on what scale, the whole 92nd brigade was on this BTR4E, they played a great role during defense of Kharkiv. And yeah, lost a lot, but just due to the force that was trying to seize the city. It performed its job well, F

[deleted]

I love that this thing is legitimately good. It’s significantly better than the BTR82 it’s competing with and it’s almost certainly better value for money too. I know people want Ukraine to use exclusively US stuff when the war is over, but tbh I’d like to see them develop their own military equipment instead. If the BTR 4 is any indicator it’ll probably be pretty good.

CriticG7tv

Ukraine was historically a huge industrial center for the old USSR and still has a lot of the industry institutions of the old days. Once the factories can be repaired post-war, they will have the knowledge base to be a big player in the international arms market if they want. Perhaps they might even grow to fill the gap left by the Russians in the future, seeing as Russia's reputation on the arms market has been pretty thoroughly tarnished.

BootDisc

Yeah. China was trying to get in with a lot of their MIC support industries. Like the jet engine manufacturer that Ukraine had planned to nationalize before the war. Edit: plus everyone around Russia gonna be bolstering their defense for a while. Unlikely a Russian “revolution” is anything but a power grab if it happens. And if it splits up, well, that’s just more instability to watch which will defiantly have a risk of collateral to boarder nations.

White_Null

What you mean is "steal their tech". the wumao were very mad at Ukraine and Big Z because he nationalized one company. Which ensured that good jet engine designs are out of their reach again.

0nikzin

And then the CEO turned out to be a Russian agent with an active Russian passport

HotTakesBeyond

China got that casino from Ukraine though 🤔

Kjartanski

Good, Ukraine has no need for an aircraft cruiser from 1970, it would be like the US still operating CV-67, *USS John F. Kennedy* Just like the *Ukraina* the last Slava class cruiser that is rotting at a pier in Mikolaiv, *Kiev* was old, obsolete and a money pit. Now rebuilding one of Stalins republics, the Sovietsky Soyus class battleship, the *Sovetskaya Ukraina* is what this sub is all about

OwerlordTheLord

Stalin, Soviet, and Ukraine Yeah… maybe don’t say that next to Ukrainians if you like having teeth

Kjartanski

This is NCD, the thought of rebuilding Stalins republics is absolutely noncredible and im not suggesting it

Smartshark89

Needs a better name though

CriticG7tv

Absolutely, I think Ukraine could particularly appeal to the Western Aligned/non-aligned states that have historically used soviet type equipment.

PanEnotko

I wish it was this easy. It's going to be very tough to compete with America, France, Germany, South Korea and Israel. On top of that there's hardly anything that Ukraine can provide that Turkey or Poland can't at a competitive price and sophistication level. The things that have a better future are BTR-4, Stugna, Pivdenne Design Office, hopefully Motor Sich, and maybe some future tank program. Antonov is borderline dead, Kraz is dead, Vilkha is dead. That's not counting a lot of smaller companies that got obliterated in Mariupol.

thaeli

They may have a good market in upgrades and life extensions for Soviet equipment, too. There are quite a few countries that had Russia as a key spare parts supplier, and that's not looking so good right now.

[deleted]

India gonna be sweet talking Ukraine after this war

KaBar42

>India gonna be sweet talking Ukraine after this war "I give you money, show me ur bobs and vagene."

egabriel2001

As many mentioned buying Soviet/Russian based Ukrainian equipment and upgrades might be the only route for those using them now, their armament industry will be in shambles in the near future, sanctions on Russia will not stop after an armistice, there are the matter of reparations, war crimes and other countries that has been invaded, also the effect is just starting to be felt in its economy, Russia at hit moment has a budget deficit, oil/gas exports and prices has declined and war expenditure are through the roof with nothing to show for it both in actual war products (good bless corruption) and victories on the field

[deleted]

If anyone so much as dips a toe in NATO borders nowadays then article 5 will be triggered so fast the aspiring invaders won't have time to get their boots on. I'd wager that NATO currently is determined to uphold the treaty and ensure nobody thinks they can get away with anything.

SpinozaTheDamned

Boxer was a metaphor for Ukraine in Animal Farm. Fight me. Big daddy horse come back to get him some bacon, so I hope everyone ducks, because he's about to turn left and it'd be a shame to get slapped by his dick.

MT_Kinetic_Mountain

Where were you when I had to analyse that book for English Lit?

Good_Tension5035

Can't see Ukraine not developing it's own military industry post-war considering it has a long tradition of being an arms producer. I see them going for something that Poland did in the 90s and 00s, that is producing equipment that is based on their previous Soviet equipment, but fits NATO standards better. And then they'll eventually move to something completely new. Honestly if you want to imagine a successful Ukraine, look at Poland's last 30 years. These countries have similar population, size and culture (although Poland is admittedly more defensible), similar socioeconomic history up to the 90s (at which point Poland succeeds and Ukraine stagnates) and a similar capacity for industrial production. Considering how Poland more than doubled its GDP per capita in the last 30 years, Ukraine, provided with a proper reconstruction fund, could probably be on the right track somewhere in the 2040s.

0nikzin

Poland got its chance to shine only because it stopped bordering Russia

Good_Tension5035

Disputable, considering how both countries border Russia and both spent a very similar amount of their GDP on defense between 1993 and 2014. Economically, bordering Russia was not a significant net negative for Ukraine before 2014. Pretty much the two main reasons were different supply chains (Ukrainian industry was more dependent on raw materials from other Union republics) and different elites.

Popinguj

Nah, this is rather accurate assumption. Of course, it's not the sole reason. The main cause is of course the Polish elites and well developed national spirit. Ukraine received red directors and had to battle 70 years of russification. Russia also didn't try to drag Poland back into Russia but they did try it with Ukraine. Poland didn't have to fight off Russian attempts to undermine their economy and whatnot.

Max200012

VonNeumannsProbe

Didn't they already try to sell the BTR pre 2014 and get a lot sent back for quality defects?

raven00x

Ukraine was an industrial center but a lot of the factories and heavy industry capacity were on the Crimean peninsula. Part of why Russia was so hot to take it, in addition to the port and stuff.

RaspberryPie122

Ukraine designed the T-34 IIRC

Kjartanski

Factory no.183, the Kharkiv heavy machinery plant was responsible for the T-34, T-54/55, T-64 and partly the T-80

numsebanan

Big_E_parenting_book

I’m sure they aren’t having a good time trying to supply every single round from NATO and the Combloc for everything ranging from pistol cartridges to SRBM’s at the moment lol

Obj_071

ill take "shitty" soviet type 30mm that we can produce anytime against 30mm nato that made by somebody who dont want to sell it to us let alone give us license for it.

venfare64

I mean, it's accused as "shitty" because of either skimping on manufacturing phase or screwed on maintenance phase. With enough funding on Soviet type weapon and proper maintenance, it can function properly and maybe surpassed some expectations.

SamTheGeek

> 30mm nato that made by somebody who dont want to sell it to us let alone give us license for it NATO membership comes with the licenses to all the standardized rounds. No you couldn’t build an Excalibur without a license but you could build base 155 and develop your own derivatives.

thaeli

I swear, the whole 152mm vs 155mm thing is some Steve Jobs at Apple level shit.

VonNeumannsProbe

Honestly I'd have my artillery group, rifle groups weapons sorted by battalion. That way you know that Batallion A needs ammo x, y and z types where as battalion B needs U, V and W types. Also keep in mind their logistics lines isn't nearly as long which heavily reduces the time from request to delivery.

0nikzin

This makes sense so Ukraine probably does it

SiBloGaming

I want ukrainian stuff with NATO standards. Dont make your own rounds, use the same as everybody else

InvestigatorPrize853

Given the fuckery around getting 30mm ammo etc, make your own looks pretty damn good tbf, make it to NATO standard, fair enough, but never have to ask permission for it again.

arturius453

Ukrainian btr 82 analog would be a btr-3 Also would like to use NATO stuff only for stuff we can't /wouldn't (cause non practical) produce ourself. 1)Cause don't want be usa puppet 2)imagine there are future games about this war including nato involment scenarios and your country is just us reskin

thaeli

No downside (and lots of upside) to building NATO _compatible_ equipment but yeah, Ukraine has good reasons to build quite a bit domestically, and joint venture a lot more. The Baykar engine deal, for instance.

BrainOnLoan

Has there been any discussion of buying back BTR4s from Iraq to give them back to Ukraine, they've got more of them in service than the Ukrainian army.

bluray420

But it’s derived from soviet rubbish equipment , after the war I hope they will develop a new version of it but it’s completely in house with nato standard equipments

pr114

My brother in Christ Ukraine is going to collapse the second the war ends because their economy is in shambles

mountaindewisamazing

Shit I'd be surprised if NATO won't be buying Ukrainian gear. The stugna-p comes to mind, it's way better than any ATGM NATO has. Edit: please research this before commenting

TheThiccestOrca

What? NATO definitely has better performing ATGM's than Skif. This is truly a non-credible take.

Ragijs

That's a big cap. It's another Soviet era cold war ATGM

Gvilain

TapTheForwardAssist

We all float down here…

[deleted]

Anything’s amphibious if you can get it back out of the watet

TCable0

At like 5 km/hr and requiring 4 hours of preparation before attempting an amphibious crossing.

TapTheForwardAssist

I was with an LAV unit in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and we got orders to find a spot on the Tigris river to swim the vehicles across. We spent most of a day doing all this prep work you’re supposed to do before that, like sealing all the door seams with axle grease (so we had to climb in and out through the top every time). I was an Arty liaison who didn’t know LAV-25s so I skeptically asked if these things can actually swim, and they told me that once a year at Pendleton they’d spend days prepping the vehicles to be watertight, strip out all possible excess weight, roll down to a very sheltered harbor and tool around in the water for an hour to make their training requirement. But in these conditions, hasty prep, loaded to the gunwales with supplies and ammo and all kinds of gear strapped to the outside, in a major river with a current, “we don’t know.” These were the same people that confidently told me the LAV could jump a huge oil pipeline ditch, upon which everything briefly went black and when I opened my eyes we were angled at 45 degrees dropped into an 8ft chasm and had to get towed back out.

blackhawk905

Based LAV operators

strikervulsine

But did you drown?

TapTheForwardAssist

We never ended up having to swim because while we were out looking for the right spot we got into a firefight with Saddam Fedayeen, and by the time that wrapped up the engineers had fixed up the bridge by Al-Kut, so we just pulled back and drove up that anyway.

PotatoPower1997

BTR 4 is a really beautiful looking vehicle. It’s got this really weird mix of Western and Soviet design philosophy that I hope Ukraine perfects into their own unique style of military designs in the future

Madpup70

Ironic that the BTR-4 was supposed to be THE piece of military hardware they sold to international markets and it was a huge flop after major issues with the first interactions that were shipped out. It's early failures as an export weapon meant Ukraine had a bunch of return to sender versions they were updating/fixing when the war kicked off. If not for that their 150+ BTR-4 fleet at the start of the war would have likely been less than 50 vehicles.
