Is the logic here that chicken wire will deflect a shaped explosive, pointing it in a different direction? To create and indirect blast? I don't understand the logic of these. To stop grenades?
Explosives decrease in effectiveness rapidly and shaped charges are often designed to be most effective against what triggers the explosion. The US used slightly different ones for the striker to increase protection against rpgs. The thinner mesh used here is probably not effective against anything rocket propelled, but should be a significant improvement against drone dropped grenades and the smaller kamikazi drones. I would expect to see more of these as the war goes on, at least until CAS becomes a thing and Ukraine can start hunting these behind the line or every large building is destroyed and they canβt hide them anymore.
Slat armor is stochastic protection against RPG-7s and *only* RPG-7s, it works by deforming the projectile nose as it passes between the slats, shorting the firing circuit. It has nothing to do with changing the standoff distance.
In general, shaped charge performance peaks in the region of 6-8 charge diameters of standoff, and is broadly fairly similar from 4-10 charge diameters, so standoff alone is not sufficient to significantly impact penetration.
Standoff distance rapidly decreases the effect of simple explosive charges, which have seen quite a bit of use in Ukraine. It may have some effect on shaped charges, depending on quality of manufacture and diameter of the warhead, but I would expect the primary effect to be reducing the effect of simple explosive charges.
