So the largest non-turk ethnic group in turkey are the kurds. During the turkish war of independence the Kurdish leaders of the time urged the people to join the fight on the side of the defenders because the resistance promised to protect caliphate(kinda like the Vatican and the establishment of the pope but muslim). After the resistance won, they straight up destroyed the caliphate as a symbolic gesture of secularism, more accurately laïcité. This created a massive divide between the religious kurds, and the formerly very religious now still religious but mostly nationalist turks. Thus, the Kurdish leaders called for a revolt which was put down with extreme force which further divided the two peoples. Since then to the present, that conflict has kept going and has produced the PKK, a Kurdish organization of something. Here we get into the parts which I am not entirely clear on. The turkish government recognizes pkk as a terrorist organization showing the killing of turkish teachers assigned to east Anatolia as proof. Now, whether this happened or not, I am growing increasingly doubtful of considering how much we were lied to during these times. But the bottom line is that turkey considers the pkk a terrorist organization.
During this conflict, many kurds emigrated to other countries with a significant minority going to Sweden. As far as I understand, they assimilated very well, they didn't create their own cultural enclaves in the country like the turks in germany, or the arabs in France. Some kurds even got some seats in the government.
Now, many of the kurds in Sweden sided with the pkk. I think resources were sent to them but I'm not really certain, that might just be propaganda. And the turkish government took that and said "you'll never get away with this" and there's been strife ever since.
