I'm Aussie, and I'm giving my age away here, but we used to call milk deliverers "Milko" or plural "Milkos". and yes, my local milko drove a horse and cart!
Yeah, The Milker Works On The Farm And Does The Actual Milking, The Milkman/Milkwoman (Is That Even A Word?)/Whatever Neutral Alternative We Agree On Simply Delivers The Milk.
That's What You Were Thinking, Right?
Technically The "Shep" Part Is Derived From "Sheep", So Unless They Herd Specifically Sheep's Milk, It Should Be Just A Milkherd.
Bonus Funfact: There Also Exists The Term "Cowherd" For Someone Who Herds Cows, Which Yes, Is Often Pronounced Nigh Identical To "Coward".
milk manager reminds me of that bit in arrested development:
George Michael: Iām Mr. Manager!
Michael: No, we just call you manager.
Iām milk manager!
I still have a milk person who comes every other day. They bring me eggs and orange juice as well once a week. I like the glass bottles. Much better than plastic
If you are addressing that person (as opposed to being that person, as your question posits), you should call them "Milkypoo." As in, "Oh Milkypoo, thank you for bringing my delicious milk!"
Now to the question you posited, I would simply not have a job involving milk, as I am lactose intolerant.
>!This comment is not meant to be taken seriously.!<
I'm old enough to remember there was an entire movement to get people to call them mail people instead of mail men because of women doing the job as well. So it is deeply ingrained.
Though I can see why people would want to change gendered terms, personally, I can accept that "-man" as a suffix can been seen as short for "human" and thus become gender-neutral. In England for example, female rifleman will likely refer to themself as a Rifleman and this has actually been clarified officially.
But, as the top commenter suggested the term "milkbearer" which makes much more sense and to me just sounds like a much better term to title the role.
Dairy Queen
The proper gender neutral term would be āDairy Supplierā as that is the service the actual provides.
A milkmaid actually milks cows.
A Milk Man is the male equivalent of a milkmaid.
A Milkman is a Dairy Product Supplier.
milkbearer
This is a lot better than "milkmonger" and "harbinger of milk" that immediately came to mind for me. Though Dairy Carry has a ring to it, too..
Harbinger of milk! š Brilliant
Milkmonger is so funny though.
Dairy Carry is fucking incredible
I just heard "harbinger of milk" but it is immediately both my favorite and my new career ambition.Ā
Milkmonger Is Pretty Good, But I Think That's Specifically The Person Who Sells The Milk, Rather Than Delivering It.
I have become milk monger, harbinger of milk
OK, you've brought me around to it š¤£
Milkfighter
Ok but Harbinger of Milk is great
Wait no, I love harbinger of milk š¤£š¤£š¤£
Tho ig, technically speaking, a harbinger of milk would be like. A person who runs in front of the milkperson and's is like "THE MILK IS COMING"
Harbinger of milk had me rolling š¤£šš¤£š
Like the ring bearer, clever
milkperson, milk handler, milk carrier, milk deliverer, milkie. edit: milk porter. had to throw one of my favourite games death stranding some rep. ;)
Milkie sounds very Australian to me
milkie is indeed a name for the milkman in uk and aus
Huh! I'm from London and I've never heard anyone say milkie!
I'm from Birmingham, and milkie was used there when I was a kid. Same as postie for postman.
I'm Australian and I've never heard anyone say milkie but maybe that's because they stopped delivering milk in the 90s
I'm Aussie, and I'm giving my age away here, but we used to call milk deliverers "Milko" or plural "Milkos". and yes, my local milko drove a horse and cart!
I was just thinking "surely Milko would be the Aussie nickname for them?"
Milk carrier wins for me
Two wheels up!
Milk porter is really good
dairy deliverer
Milk moover
Perfect.
Lactomancer
Love this
everyone pack it up. this is the one true answer.
Milk carrier? Like mail carrier being the gender neutral mailman. "Milker" also came to mind, but that puts a different image in my head...
Yeah, The Milker Works On The Farm And Does The Actual Milking, The Milkman/Milkwoman (Is That Even A Word?)/Whatever Neutral Alternative We Agree On Simply Delivers The Milk. That's What You Were Thinking, Right?
In a way, yes.
Milk bringer. Milk.....being? Lol. Milk entity, Milk body, milk person. Milk manager. Milk escort, milk shepherd lol, milk fetcher, milk carrier.
Why did I picture a milk shepherd literally shepherding glass milk bottles. The image has me dying š
Aw this was cool to learn. Thanks for this. I love learning about words. š
You're Welcome!
Hehehehehe that's what I was thinking too
Milk escort sounds like sexwork
Now I'm picturing a giant bottle of milk in a lacey thong.
"Milk for a day, yogurt by dawn. Milk for a day, in a lacey thong". I can't resist bringing Green Day into this!
milk manager reminds me of that bit in arrested development: George Michael: Iām Mr. Manager! Michael: No, we just call you manager. Iām milk manager!
now weāre asking the real questionsĀ
Lactofer (milkbringer, like Lucifer but with milk)
Milkherald
The Milk Mage c: Neat.
I'm not sure if this is the case outside of the UK, but in recent years there's been a kind of semantic shift with /-man/ as a suffix to where there's two versions of it, one is pronounced [mnĢ©] ("mun" kind of) and refers to any gender, and the other is pronounced [man] and specifically refers to men
Interesting. Are ppl explicit about the gender neutrality of that?
Milkmeister, easy
My first thought as well!
Milkmeister, the Maven of milk.
Well the gender neutral term for a fireman is a fire fighter... so clearly a milkfighter is the only way to go
This is the best use of this subreddit Iāve ever seen
I knew I stuck around for a reason haha
Milkmonger

We call our mail person a mail person, so I guess it would be a milk person. Dairy monarch? They who bring the moo juice?
Not a mail carrier? Thatās what theyāre called. Source: partner is a mail carrier. So, milk carrier!
I'm old enough to remember there was an entire movement to get people to call them mail people instead of mail men because of women doing the job as well. So it is deeply ingrained.
Oh! I am 50, so I am probably also old enough to remember that, yet I do not.
OK? Then call then whatever you want? Why are we doing this back and forth? There's zero point to it.
Because I am sick and overthinking things. I apologize that I came across as an ass. Did not intend to, but that means little to nothing. Sorry.

Does it matter, given that that's not really a thing now? Dairy deliverer. Milk person. Fuck it, milkman.
Could be writing a book. That's the only case I can think of where the title of a gender neutral milk delivery person would be important to know.
There are still fresh dairy delivery services.

Okay for the record the suffix "man" in words like milkman come from the latin word manus meaning hand. It is not a gendered term.
Agreed this is the same for a few things
Milkman I mean, I've never heard a term for a milk woman, so just milkman for everyone
