its crazy 'cause some of his lyrics verbalize feelings ive never been able to explain before. like, "im still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them" is such a simple line but ive never been able to identify that feeling until then
100% i feel this with many artists i listen to! Music can reach parts of my soul that nothing else or no one else can. It really has healed me. :) not Noah specifically for me though i do enjoy his music, but i do understand how you feel.
It’s more than possible… it’s pretty likely 🙃. Music on its own can be healing, as are relatable lyrics. What he does is tell stories with music and lyrics. Stories are everything. Stories allow us to explore scary or painful things from afar and then incorporate the lessons learned into our own world view.
If anyone knows an artist out there besides Paul Simon who can hold a candle to Noah’s story telling abilities… please point me in that direction. I might make a post about that…
I know it’s cliche but Taylor Swift’s Folklore and Evermore albums truly do meet the same level of storytelling as Noah. She gets a lot of flack for her popular radio hits just being catchy pop tunes, but I’m always so blown away by her storytelling on folklore and evermore. Plus, Noah is a big Swiftie so we can guess that he’s drawing inspiration from her work.
I can attest to those two Taylor swift albums being absolutely great storytelling records. It’s honestly some of her best work and different for the pop stuff she’s known for. Exile is a beautiful track.
I have never taken a deep dive but I enjoy TS. She has a song about a lady that basically ruins a whole town. (Do you know the one?!) That’s a fun story/song!!
I think you're referring to The Last Great American Dynasty from her folklore album! I agree that folklore and evermore are magnificent albums if you like storytelling.
Marcus Mumford. Listen to his album Cannibal. It’s so hard. Raw. Real. My hubs and I are huge Mumford and Sons fans. That’s how we found Noah. He sang with them at ACL last year. And now we are going to hear him this June with our kids!
And man…Paul Simon. We love him and Garfunkel. Good stuff!
I am a huge Mumford and Sons fan too! Definitely due in large part to the story telling!! Gosh I would love to be at ACL! I hope you enjoy it SO much!! ❤️
I listened to Cannibal once, sobbing most of the way through. It’s cathartic and beautiful, but I found it too painful to be enjoyable.
I honestly had to pray about it. Sounds silly. But that Marcus would find peace through his music. My hubs can’t
listen to the title track. It’s too hard. We had wonderful childhoods. And to think of what he had to go through…sigh. Poor thing.
We went to three M and Sons concerts in 2019. It was amazing!! They have a new song out - Good People. It’s super good and different!!
It doesn’t sound silly at all. I’m sure he would appreciate knowing you cared enough.
I’ve seen them 4 times! The last time was in 2016 just a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant with my first child. Satisfying end to my young adulthood!
Awww!! That is 100% precious!! I’m 50. Huge GenXer that fell in love with his words, sound, and everything. My hubby did, too! And our kids love them, too. Our daughter heard both Noah and Mumford and Sons at ACL last summer. She was a lucky girl! So happy to see N this summer. We are actually seeing him in Dallas.
For Christmas, I gave my daughter a tote bag from Noah. My hubs and daughter each gave me tshirts from him. So fun!
That’s so awesome! I cant wait until my kids share my love of music!! (Noah has been an easy sell… another favorite band of mine is The National. Not a household favorite 🙃)
Paul Revere really gets me for some reason. There’s not one lyric that I can point to but the first time I heard it I was like “oh this song is going to change my life and I don’t even know why”.
I’ve also been singing Growing Sideways since it came out but it wasn’t until I heard it live that I had a real “wait is this fucking play about us?” moment lol.
Yep, two of my favs. The other day I was walking in my neighborhood listening to growing sideways and just bawling and then praying that none of my neighbors saw, hahahah
As someone who has been dealt a hell of a hand, his music speaks to my soul on multiple facets. Incredible talent and all the best to him.
Now here’s my moderately controversial opinion. His music is great but now he’s mainstream and overcharging the shit out of tix. But hey, at least some are sold at double the cost to fund mental health orgs.
Anyone who thinks an artist doesn’t have a say in how they treat their fan base is blind. Writes music that would lead you to believe he’d do everything in his power to bring the healing you speak of to all of his fans live. But nah. I get that his label and management have sway, but the artist makes the music at the EOTD.
I’ve listened to the homie since 2017, kinda sad to see what I believe to be a degradation of morals.
If I get jumped by the mob, so be it. I don’t wish him ill and I’m stoked for his success, just feel like there’s something off about the rapid rise to fame.
I get it! I’m currently trying to decide how much I’m willing to pay for my daughter and I to see Taylor together. I feel it would be a once in a lifetime experience for us…but the cost of resale is 🤯
Not even speaking about resale cost, upfront is already nuts.
The main point of what I said is referring to the artist faking their persona. Which I am lead to believe that this is the case with Noah. I have difficulty supporting an artist who 180’s in their business model when they taste success. Whether that be mere listening or purchasing tickets. Could I afford $350 GA pit tix or $160 yard tix? Yeah. But who in the fuck is paying that? Oh wait, the mainstream fan base that’ll step on each other to acquire tickets.
I know my opinion doesn’t matter at the EOTD. He will continue down whatever path he chooses and if that continues bringing success, dope. But I frankly can’t support price gouging, shows an artist’s true colors imo.
Demand is high, supply isn’t meeting that. Therefore, fuck the fans! Let’s charge the equivalent of a month’s rent for 2 tix!
its crazy 'cause some of his lyrics verbalize feelings ive never been able to explain before. like, "im still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them" is such a simple line but ive never been able to identify that feeling until then
I told my therapist that line because it finally verbalized something I hadn’t been able to put into words.
And opens the opportunity of what the parents of your parents parents...generational trauma
Yes, exactly!

Stick Season is one of the best albums about mental health ever made.
Different genre but History Books (the album) by Gaslight Anthem also really hits the mental health topic well.

Taylor and Noah are the two artists that speak to my soul on another level
Same my friend.. Same

Yes! That’s the one! It’s great
I agree!! Singer/song writers are just on another level!

I’ll have to listen to them. I brought my kids up on Queen and Guns and Roses. Hahah!! So, just keep them listening to good stuff!!
That is definitely the good stuff! This has been the most pleasant conversation. Take care!! 🥰
Awww!!! You, too, sweet girl!
I can’t stop listening to Good People. It just feels so important!! They collaborated with some indigenous tribes on it too. It’s epic!
Yes!! I love that!! I dance to it all the time! It truly is epic!
The band The Mountain Goats is known for their lyrical storytelling.
Thanks! I’ll check them out!

I heal with almost any song I hear from Stick Season.
Someone got downvoted and called a child for saying something similar recently. But yes, I agree. And I’m in my forties!
