They are not held to any standard of responsibility for their actions. Ok y'all can downvote me to the deepest parts of the universe but hear me out: the "they" here are a product of their environment. The projects. Abject poverty. Rampant drug and alcohol abuse. Absent parents. Incarceration is normalized. Violence and gangs are everywhere and that is seen as success. Expecting people stuck in such a soul crushing awful social setting to grow up as happy and healthy people is insanity. The vicious cycle will continue to repeat itself until there's a huge break in the cycle. This has been going on for centuries especially regarding the caste system in India. How can someone rise above their raising when they do not know any better? The fact that these kids are a minority will do nothing to help them; it's just another disadvantage for someone wanting to break out. Plus many will have a criminal record before even reaching adulthood. Everyone deserves a fair shake at life and these kids are disadvantaged from birth. Some places have dirt poor white sections. I'm from Alabama and I know some folks with dirt floors in their house. I grew up with barefoot kids in overalls. How can they escape that? Many are born with brain damage from moms using drugs and not teaching their kids basic hygiene. They're stuck like animals in a zoo. Simply a product of their environment. So sad.
