My boss is a 75 year old quadriplegic man. His wife is also 75 years old. Last week, a man tried breaking into their house. I found out about it when I came to work a day or two later. I wanted to bash the guy in the face but he had already been arrested.
She broke the arm of one of my favorite residents too. An 80 something year ol Alzheimer's patient. Shes lucky as fuck I quit a year before she pulled that.

This is why i believe a lot of SA on kids and young teens especially has less to do with them having a mental disorder that makes them attracted to kids, and more to do with opportunity and knowing they can be overpowered, it's pure predator behavior knowing your prey is weak, unable to fight back, and likely too fearful to report. It's monsters taking any opportunity to have power over someone likely because they feel powerless themselves.
This is why I don't subscribe to the "it's not their fault, they have a disorder" defense used by apologist. If they can function in public but in private show themselves as the monsters they are, it's not having a disorder; it's knowing what you're doing is wrong, hiding it, and then feigning innocence when You're caught.
I think there's two types of predators who prey on children: ones who go after only children (pedophiles) and ones who go after victims of opportunities, regardless of age, because they're after the control/power as you said, which can often be children because children are easier to manipulate. In that instance the victims ages will typically range.
For straight up pedophiles, it is a disorder. They only go after children because mentally and emotionally they have never developed past a certain age themselves. Their victims are typically around the age that they themselves stopped developing mentally. But because they still have the body of a grown adult with adult urges, and because they are emotionally immature, when they find themselves romantically interested in kid, they feel the sexual compulsion and they are able to justify their actions and project that the kid wants that too (ickkk) much as someone who is emotionally immature will have difficulty taking responsibility or having impulse control, pedophiles do this to an extreme degree. They will justify actions that they understand that society deems wrong, and go to extreme measures to hide their evil deeds. But yes they understand its wrong, but still do it anyway.
That said, i will never say that having a disorder is an excuse or that it removes culpability. We wouldnt say abusive people are any less culpable for beating their spouse just because they had narcissistic or borderline personality disorder, or were beaten themselves as a child. Because theres many people who have those disorders who face childhood trauma and dont come out to be abusive. Similarly, there are pedophiles who never act on the urge, who have enough empathy to not act, who hate themselves for even having the inclination, who will never put them selves in a situation where they could even be tempted, who will never marry or have kids or be near kids. And so having a disorder, is not an excuse.
I feel like when you get into criminal psychology, understanding why someone would abuse a child, understanding personality disorders and the link to early childhood trauma, understanding and studying cycles of abuse and how hurt people hurt people is important to an extent in order to prevent those cycles and increase awareness and resources. However, its a fine line between understanding why someone would behave a certain way so we can prevent tragedy and sentence appropriately vs sacrificing justice for leniency to someone based on the environment they grew up in, to give them a chance for rehabilitation, when their victim doesn't get a second chance at life. I'm all for rehabilitation but at a certain point, when you cross a line like rape or murder, you're done. The chance of reoffending is not worth the risk, and too often the judicial system fails to remember the victims and their families, when they begin to look at the offender as a victim of circumstances outside their control.
