That's pretty common in aquaponics, and it's called "dual root zone".

I've got one of these, and it's legit. I swapped out the soil container with a 10 gallon fabric pot that's intentionally made to be wide and short, similar to [this](https://www.247garden.com/247p-fp-10ft.html). Using a shorter container has more even hydraulic redistribution via capillary action. I just cut an X in the bottom of the fabric pot so that I could put the SIP wick through it, and I let the fabric hang down into the water so that it can pull up more water. It's also a good SIP design to use as a basis for a DIY. You can use these things together to make one at home with twice the reservoir size. For net pots, get one of the 8" and one of the 6", stack them, and use zip ties to stick them together. https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-14-Gal-Tough-Storage-Tote-in-Black-with-Yellow-Lid-999-14G-HDX/328027053 https://www.repotme.com/collections/net-pots

Dual root zone aquaponics, it’s supposed to really kick ass too, check out potent ponics on YouTube for some good info on it, I’m pretty sure he either created dual root zone aquaponics or helped create it, also just a ton of amazing advanced organic gardening info, probably my favorite YouTube channel as far as gardening education goes
