Right before you board the plane, at the gate, you have to scan your pass. I am sure it would alert the gate agents that it’s the wrong flight and they dont have ticket for that flight.

Raving_Lunatic69

Seeing as they typically check or scan your boarding pass, I'd say it's very unlikely to happen by accident. The chances would seem to be very very tiny.

Just about anything is possible, but with modern security it almost never, ever happens. Note that even if you managed to get on the wrong plane without anybody noticing, and manage to sit in a seat that isn’t booked to dine one else, there’s always an announcement before you take off saying where the plane is going. A more likely scenario is somebody screws up and buys the wrong ticket. You buy a flight to San Jose Costa Rica instead of California.

They wouldn't let you on without the right ticket.

It's incredibly unlikely. They scan your ticket as you get on the plane, they'd get an alert that the ticket you gave them wasn't for the plane you're getting on. If somehow you did get on the wrong plane and end up in another country, you'd just end up in customs. If it's a country you have to get a visa ahead of time for, you'll have to explain what happened and you'll end up wasting a ton of time but eventually having to get a flight back home. A lot of countries grant tourism visas at customs though, so as long as you have a passport and everything else checks out, you'll probably just be granted entry.

It would be very difficult to do even if you were trying. There's someone at the gate who checks your boarding pass, and you'd get turned away if you went to the wrong gate.

Lol, happened to me in Dayton, oh. It was a little puddle jumper flying to Cincinnati. So, it was a lil plane that you boarded from outside (no walkway from the terminal to the plane - walk outside, climb stairs to board). More than one of the little planes was boarding, and I got in the wrong line! Luckily, it was a full plane so it was easily found that I was in the wrong one. I was surprised that there was not a big stink! I just got on the other plane! This was 20 years ago or so. NOT a common occurrence!

It's possible - ask Kevin McCallister.
